About six months ago I found your channel. At first I was apprehensive about watching your channel because I am 70. I am so grateful I chose to watch you. I love all your channels. I love your advice and I agree with most of your opinions on fashion. You are awesome. Thank you for all you do for over 50 women.
I'm 73 and I learn something new with each of your videos. Unlike many other video hosts, Marie-Anne doesn't keep repackaging the same content under different titles. Thank you so much.
Thank you Marie-Anne, I’ve known about the vertical strip as far back as I can remember, however I never heard of the use of a lighter shell under the blazer. I’m 66 years young. I recently started following you and think you are amazing. Thanks for your wonderful tips.
I love these tips! What I learned is that I have a knack for styling my wardrobe and I don't necessarily follow the trends. I will continue to wear the longer pant length because I've always known that it's a better look for me. I want to share this video with one of my groups of over 50 ladies because I'm not sure they understand the principles of good fashion sense. They are more into following the trends.
You've been very explicit! I have learnt these principles from my mother and applying them for years, although I put on some weight only after I turned fifty...I 've been using them , although I'm quite tall (1.75m) and people always tell me that I'm not fat at all, i.e. your principles work! Love your videos!
Thank you Marie Anne for continuing your videos during these difficult times, I have used the dark/light column technique for years and now that I am older and a lot heavier it especially relevant, since I have started watching your videos I have learned a lot about style and I love your presentation; also I love that you point out that you don't have to be rich to be stylish! I have always told my daughters that you should spend on good shoes and good bags!! Hope that you look after you and yours, 😁
I've noticed that even fuller summer pants (white cotton or linen can be slimming if they're very long and with a close fitting sleeveless top of the same colour.
Love that jacket! Just think, a simple top under that and it looks like a million dollars. Great tips too! I am tall and a French size 2 (UK 10), so I am not so worried about looking slimmer. However, regardless of this, there are styles that make me look bigger than I am! Everyone of any age needs to consider these things. Those long pleated skirts that were in fashion towards the end of last year made me look really bulky, even though they had those sharp vertical pleats. In that case, it was about me being a bit pear-shaped and the flare coming of the waist just emphasised that. One shop-assistant said that most women need to get one size bigger so that the skirt drops lower on the hips, elongating the body. I didn't buy the skirt in the end, as gorgeous as it was, because I felt it was just a bad style choice for me, and therefore not a good buy. I was sad but I know I would never feel good in it. I DID buy the fabulous black top with transparency in the sleeves that had been paired with it on the mannequin though! The only long skirts that look good on me are straight, with a slit (still verticals). Those ruffled ones that were around last year looked fantastic on some people and in shop windows, but I felt dragged down in them. They just weren't 'me'. As you said in a previous video, 'If it's not a "wow!", it's a "No!"' It's that lesson in acknowledging that an item looks wonderful... but on other people! xx
Bonjour Marie-Anne, I love your blazer, especially the buttons on the sleeve and the piping on the edges. You look very chic! I had a similar one but black with white edges. Merci pour le video.
Vertical is definitely a plus, and single-breasted jackets. I'm not overweight but I am pear-shaped, so to balance out the wide part of me I wear slightly bootcut long trousers and jackets that have shoulder pads that extend my shoulders out an inch. That works too. :)
Thank you so much Marie-Anne because I think I finally understand that cropped short trousers may me appear shorter and are not flattering to my figure at all. I will wear long trousers from now on for sure. Thank you again.
I'm at the start of a 'New Me' journey so I am over-the-moon to find your video's, Marie-Anne. Love your style and your sensible, down-to-Earth advice....especially when you repeat the more complex theories! I'm 5'9 and a large apple shape so the principles you have outlined will really work for me. I've been wearing tunics and leggings pulled up to the knee for years so its time for a change! Merci, Marie-Anne.
Hadn't thought about the piping, but that is so true. All these ideas are simple and effective yet elusive. The example of the pants is also influenced by the shoes. If the wider short pants were paired with nude colored shoes with a low vamp and maybe a heel, it would have been wearable
I agree with all. I wish more clothing was available with piping such as you're wearing (especially coats!). It appears to me that detail really helps.
Bonjour Marie-Anne Thankyou for this video. For me personally i look slimmer always in the cooler months. That is because of the implementation of all of the above pointers. However i cannot wear shoes/boots with a high heel like i once could. But i'm still happy with my overall look with a lower heel. Stay well Marie-Anne and have a wonderful week ahead. Bev xx
Cropped trousers are #1 on my "Things That Need to Die" list. I'm amazed they've had such a long run! In second place are loose jackets and sweaters with that waterfall front, that turn the best figure shapeless and a petite woman into a small blob. I suspect clothing companies thought that up to save money on clothing construction. Love your jacket and the column of color idea! 😃
*WOW* !!!! *Thank you Marie-Anne for ALL of the tips on looking thinner* !!!! *EVERYONE wants to look taller and thinner* !!!! *I'm only 5'2" and I struggle with looking thin* !!!! #FrenchChicStyle #MarieAnneLeCoeur
Thank you, Marie-Anne! This has helped me discard some pieces I felt SO-SO about. I'm editing my closet and have decided I'm only keeping the YES! YES! pieces. One of those pieces follows your tips here to perfection. It's a long-sleeved black sweater dress. It has thin white lines from the bust to mid-thigh that come in at the waist (creating a very obvious hourglass) and that optical illusion makes the most of my body, which is on the shorter side, with ample bust and hips. The hem comes to just below my knee, which is my most flattering length, especially if I wear heels to trick the eye into thinking I'm slightly taller. No wonder I feel va-va-voom every time I wear this dress! That's the kind of piece I want to keep so I can rebuild my wardrobe to be functional and elegant. I went through a phase in which I I bought indiscriminately (I had started making enough money to not have to "save" to buy clothes...plus the ease of ordering online at any time of the day or night...it became a bit of a vice) so I accumulated too many "just OK" pieces. I'm rectifying all of that now. Your videos have been instrumental in guiding me and helping me examine my clothes with a discerning eye. Many thanks!
Merci Marie-Anne! Another great video with great examples. I guess I’ve learned these principals in my art classes. Line, light, texture, color, balance, etc. You do well in explaining these techniques to women who don’t know them. Really enjoyable. 😍
Thank you for the video! Petite ladies like myself need to remind ourselves about the importance of vertical illusion! I do feel the tips were well presented and illustrated!! Merci!
Marie Ann..I never love the clothes I buy. I buy fir function only, but from you I'm learning that I need to love what I buy to wear. And that in term will translate into confidence and attitude. I mean..that i will look like enjoy life, and that life is not a drag..THANK YOU MARIE!!🤗🤗🤗

Of course we enjoy the video, and I think it is not only for ladies over 50, you can apply for every age, the pattern is the same. I am short and I noticed the idea with long trousers also. Indeed it is a very good idea, very simple to do. Thank you, all the best!
Bonjour min Cherie Marie Anne, thank you thank you thank you for telling the ladies NO cropped trousers, they are the most horrible trend ever I mean ever, why would you want to shorten the legs, it's crazy!!!!!!!!! I always buy jeans at 32inch leg, so they cover top of the shoe or boot, so much nicer.. And Im so happy you have told everyone the truth today, you're a star!!! Have a great weekend and stay safe and warm at all times Paula x
Totally agree about the long trousers. I hate, hate, hate cropped pants! Aside from shortening the leg visually the leg, they're not practical. You can't really wear them in the cold and rainy months.
I'm tall, and tall ladies are supposed to be able to carry off certain looks better than shorter ladies. But a short/cropped style makes me look as if I'm wearing the wrong size even if the top of the trousers fits perfectly. And I agree with Deborah's comment above: if my pants don't cover the top of my shoes, I will wear hosiery in the same colour to extend the "column of colour."
Hello Marie Anne wonderful video I will definitely be using these tips love these magical tips Exactly what a magician does tricking our eyes and letting us see what they want us to see Have a lovely weekend 🤩🤩🤩
Brilliant advice! I can’t thank you enough for your techniques, dear. You explain everything very clearly, I love this video! Greetings from Uruguay🙋♀️🇺🇾😘😘
I am 5'3 petite and always wish to look taller and especially slimmer. Darker colors on the outside, vertical lines. I think sometimes pockets at the hips that don't lay perfectly flat can make one appear to be wider. I will remember these rules. Thank you Marie- Anne.
Thank you so much for your lovely videos, Ms. Lecoeur. Have you done a video for choosing colors and styles that enhance gray hair? I'm learning to "rock" my salt-and-pepper hair.
Bonjour Marie-Anne. I felt I needed to watch this video since I've been couped up in the house these last couple of days tyed to the t.v. The most exercise I think I'm getting is from the couch to fridge to couch to bathroom. A lot of my friends right now are complaining about eating too much. I need to learn to dress slimmer, ha ha. Yes, very educational. I agree with all youroints, however, the stores try to sell us the idea that by wearing shorter legged pants we are to look taller and that is why the pant legs are short. But you made everything make sense. Merci.
@@MarieAnneLecoeur I look forward to that x I have been online looking for classy scarves and good quality Winter tops. It's freezing here in Australia! xx
Thank you so much xx We have snow skiing Mountain ranges, and down south in Melbourne, we live on the Coast so the weather gets very very cold. Winter is between 6-12 degrees Celcius. x
Great tips Marie-Anne. I would like to add that color block dresses in high contrast colors are also slimming. I wear a long necklace with a pendant to draw the eyes downward with certain outfits. Lastly I believe certain hairstyles can also help slim your face. Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it.
Very good techniques of course, But love my cropped pants in the Summer. Am losing weight with this crisis though. Afraid to go to the grocery store too often.
I've got a pair of black trousers that I've always considered too wide legged. I'm getting out the sewing machine & getting busy! Maybe I'll start wearing them again. Love your videos, Marie-Anne! xx❤
Excellent I use most of them but good to be reminded . I dressed many woman when I worked in Fashion and all your ideas here are spot on. This information avoids wasting money and hits the chic factor . I often would call the scarf or item of interest the star preformer.
Thank you! I really enjoy your channel; learning much! You are elegant, and classic! I am short, muscular and your help is "elongating" my appearance to be my best! Be well.
@@MarieAnneLecoeur for work, a pair of plain black or navy ankle pants. I work in HR, conservative dress. For casual, probably olive straight leg khakis or dark wash jeans. Other suggestions?
A very wise advice! Even though i am medium to slim, in size, i am so short, only 1,50 meters high,. So your advices apply for me as well. You are great 🙂!
Thanks a lot! The last tip was completely new to me. Obvious, I'll give it a try. Especially in these times, it is important to dress well. For your own attitude, self-confidence - and a positive image for your partner. My husband and I now eat in our dining room every night, no longer in the kitchen. We change clothes (casual clothes, but no leggings and after all my hand washing throughout the day I wear rings, for example) and spend nice evenings at home. I would definitely recommend it!
I like the tip of the one button blazer or coat. So many blazers want to use double rows and they end up at the hip area. It visually widens the hips. Is there ever a time it is ok to wear horizontal stripes? I love the look. but would like to find a way to make it look visually slimmer.
Thank you for your helpful info. I have been heavy since childhood and I had to learn these principles at a very young age. I do think it would be helpful to show examples of your tips and techniques maybe on something as simple as a vision board behind you on an easel. If women could see an example of a column of color outfit next to an example of a woman wearing an outfit that is horizontally crossed with colors and a differently colored belt it would show instantly how much more flattering your techniques are. Showing a short plump woman wearing a loudly colored, largely patterned top is less flattering that a simple solidly colored top without a pattern. Presenting examples of thinking vertically would help as well even if it is only using a long necklace with a pendant to show vertical movement on a solid top. Showing a woman in a v-neck sweater with a collared shirt beneath it standing next to a woman in a crew-neck sweater with a collared shirt underneath could help get your ideas across. Visuals of every idea would be helpful.
Thank You Mary- Ann for dedication to refine us. I like light blue color -it goes very well with my eyes- together with brown color and I am a small frame but busty. What do you think about light blue unbuttoned linen shirt over silk brown or black outfit- blouse and pants? It goes opposite to what you are recommending and I agree with you, but the dominance of the color and type of fabric which makes me comfortable, makes me to call for the exception from the rule. I really love your approach with dedication to vertical lines.
I'm going to be dreaming of Skyscrapers now! great tips Marie-Anne. I am short and plus size, but I have lost forty pounds since January 2022 on KETO. It's so uplifting to be able to look remotely attractive now. I still have to lose another fifty pounds. I have been wondering if French Women wear Blazers and jackets all the time especially the over fifties. thank you. Jayne. ☺️
I knew the vertical tip- but I hadn't thought of vertical styling details, so much- so thank you, because I am a seamstress I can put vertical detailing on clothes I already have.
You are so right about cropped pants, but I think I take it even further. The "long" pants you show are ankle length. I feel the break between the ankle pants and my shoes chops me off and makes me look shorter and dumpy. I prefer my pants straight and somewhat narrow but meeting my shoes, so there is one continuous line. If my shoes are of the same tone as the pants, the illusion works even better. I don't know why, but I always think narrow ankle pants look good on other women, but when I try them on, they just look like my pants are too short! You mentioned long cardigans, but I find they drag my short (5'3"), somewhat scrawny figure down. I look overwhelmed. I prefer sweaters, jackets, cardigans to hit at the high hip ... unless it's a shaped, tailored knee length coat. Thanks for the tips.
I enjoy your videos and get the concepts. My problem is that I live in Queensland Australia where it is over 30 degrees Celcius for four months out of the year! I can only wear long pants and jackets, or even long vests half the year! Can you please do a video on How to dress in summer? Thanks again!
I have done seevral summer videos and dressing in the heat videos Roxanne - I have been on UA-cam since 2011 but mainly since 2017 and so that is a few summer's worth to get through 😃
Looking slimmer has never been something I have to worry about (luckily). However I was shocked after 3 years of not seeing my best friend from college suddenly I saw her very stylish and slim despite she was petite. She confessed me she was big when we met but she wore clear colors covered by long dark cardigans, vertical stripes, long jeans and skirts and avoided big prints. That way no one could ever noticed she was a little bit chubby even me, her best friend! One more time when I can see an example that your teachings are always true. Have a beautiful and safe weekend Marie-Anne!
Marie-Anne Lecoeur I did not know I heard it wrong. My apologies. I thought it was rather strange but tried to convince myself to what I understood from your explanation. Thank you so much for letting me know.
Thank you so much, Marie-Anne, you are the best! Very interesting the dark over light effect. I have also felt great in summer months wearing a slim black sleeveless dress with a long white jacket over top, which seems to run contrary to your advice. I have slim legs but a bit of a tummy. I can tell you I get a lot of admiring glances from men when I wear this look. So now I am a bit confused? Can you explain please?
Marie-Anne is right; any high contrast in an outfit like that makes one look slimmer, but black on the outside would be the most slimming. However, to hide a tummy, black on the inside hides the tummy best. Black is the most forgiving color since it reflects the least light. I find that unwanted bumps and little bulges seem to disappear when dressed in black.
My personal tip to appear thinner is to wear straight leg or slim leg jeans & trousers. Mens' pant fit my rectangle body the best. Also pencil skirts do the same.
Thank you Marie-Anne for bringing light to these times. I have to laugh, my favorite walking sweater is double breasted, but it is from The A.P.C. store in Paris....so I have to keep it. I am 5'3 , it probably does not help with looking taller, but I will try a lighter top....but makes me happy because it is from France. 🙂 I agree about those cropped pants, I don't think they flatter anyone, and if I did wear them, I would have to think about my pale winter legs showing...that is 2 bad things.

Good practical tips. I'm 5'3 and like your advice on this topic. Merci Marie-Anne ❤
You’re a perfect Style teacher !
I understand Marie Ann. Thank you so very much.
Excellent I use most of them but good to be reminded . I dressed many woman when I worked in Fashion and all your ideas here are spot on. This information avoids wasting money and hits the chic factor . I often would call the scarf or item of interest the star preformer.
very usefull...
Good as always, Marie-Anne, thanks
I learned that I can wear some sun dresses I didn’t think I could as inverted triangle! Thank you, Marie-Anne.
Thank you! I really enjoy your channel; learning much! You are elegant, and classic! I am short, muscular and your help is "elongating" my appearance to be my best! Be well.
It all makes sense Marie-Anne. Thank You
Excellent advice that makes total sense. Merci beaucoup.
As a under 5' woman, I need all the help I can get, especially illusion. 😂
Vertical lines, vertical details, columns of color. Ty 😊
Great ideas. I have a similar blazer in my wardrobe. Now I know why it works so well on me.
@@MarieAnneLecoeur for work, a pair of plain black or navy ankle pants. I work in HR, conservative dress. For casual, probably olive straight leg khakis or dark wash jeans. Other suggestions?
Loving your videos, it was meant for me 👍👏👏👏👏
🤗😘
Bonjour Marie-Anne! Thank you so much for the video 😘
Great tips, I wish you could present more examples for the 3rd tip!
I dress very classic & always have gotten many compliments ☺. Now that I'm in my late 60's it's even more important, as I don't look frumpy.
Thank you so much it makes sense,!
I'm going to be dreaming of Skyscrapers now! great tips Marie-Anne. I am short and plus size, but I have lost forty pounds since January 2022 on KETO.
It's so uplifting to be able to look remotely attractive now. I still have to lose another fifty pounds. I have been wondering if French Women wear Blazers and jackets all the time especially the over fifties. thank you. Jayne. ☺️
Hi Marie Anne , collotes are considered to make look short and wide as well?
I knew the vertical tip- but I hadn't thought of vertical styling details, so much- so thank you, because I am a seamstress I can put vertical detailing on clothes I already have.
You are very welcome Laura x
Yes, I definitely learned techniques from you! Thank you so much❣️🌹
You are so right about cropped pants, but I think I take it even further.
I have done seevral summer videos and dressing in the heat videos Roxanne - I have been on UA-cam since 2011 but mainly since 2017 and so that is a few summer's worth to get through 😃
Yes...this makes sense. Thank you.
Hi i am new here, and i have to say that i am very happy that i discoverd your channel. ❤❤❤love from germany Eva
Merci Eva and a Big French Chic Welcome to you 😘
Looking slimmer has never been something I have to worry about (luckily).
“The color of color” thank you for teaching us this among other points in the video.
Merci Madame 🤗😘
My personal tip to appear thinner is to wear straight leg or slim leg jeans & trousers. Mens' pant fit my rectangle body the best. Also pencil skirts do the same.
Great, natural speaker...g
Hi Marie-Anne, more useful advice thank you. Stay safe.
Thank you for your teaching of style,I have learnt so much from you, I'm 71, 😍
You are very welcome Marilyn x
I love the long pant tip, I guess for summer in LA we need thin fabrics in order to survive the heat
Thank you for such good tips. I am a new subscriber and will now be checking out your other videos. Again, thanks so much!
I can't wait to try the guidelines.
Merci from Baton Rouge!
