He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is in his 70's now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose. Oh and I suppose I'd say this genre is Classic Rock/Pop.
I think this maybe falls under the category progpop. I can imagine Genesis doing that song in those days. Daryl Stuermer (guitar) and Chester Thompson (drums) were also for many years performing in the live concerts by Genesis, and on bass is Leland Sklar who played on thousands recorded songs since early seventies (Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Crosby, Still and Nash and so on).
While "In the Air Tonight" is comparatively "slow", the reason why it's so compelling is because of the tension that builds and builds until the the payoff of the drum fill that releases it.
Philip David Charles Collins LVO (born 30 January 1951) is an English singer, drummer, songwriter, record producer and actor. He was the drummer and later lead singer of the rock band Genesis and also has a career as a solo performer.
Great reaction guys, haven't listened to him in years but I remember Phil Collins had a lot of good hits in the 80s, and also with Genesis, really talented songwriter. Lilly is very observant to lyrics when she watches the videos, she's a really smart girl 👍I think they used this song in an ad for chocolate years back and it showed a gorilla playing the drums hah 🥁🦍
Great reaction. Fun fact, just in case you don't know, Phil's daughter is also named "Lily", born in Guildford and raised in Los Angeles. She's an actress and has been in a few movies/TV shows, one of which she played Snow White, back in 2012, called "Mirror, Mirror". It is quite a good movie, has a PG rating and showcased her singing ability in the last scene.
Lilly is a clever girl! I have watched many reactions to this and she is one of only three to catch the mood of the song. I think he is talking to a man who was secretly cheating with his wife.
look with lilly at, Bee Gees - You Win Again - 1988. With phil collins on drums, I know lilly likes these two artists, I live at wembley stadium, great song.
God Bless Lilly, may she discover her heart as she grows into the world around her.. Bless both of you. Phil Collins telling it from a broken heart gave birth to In The Air Tonight
Does Lilly like the Disney movie 'Tarzan'? (Phil's music) I would put this song in 'Rock' genre. Yes, Phil did attend drama school. He seemed to learn his lessons very well. He handles drama with aplomb. His acting in the Miami Vice TV episode called 'Phil the Shill' is entertaining and Phil is great in it. He also has a couple good movies....'Buster' and 'Frauds'. The first is a love story around the great British train robbery of 1963 and the other is a dark comedy from Australia.
I've seen Buster, but I don't remember seeing him in anything else, so that's interesting to learn what else he has acted in. As for Tarzan, I'm not sure if she's seen that one, but she will be round later on today so I'll ask her.
Phil Collins was with a band called Genesis , and had several major hits in the U.S. they were considered “Progressive Rock”. [ he not only sings, play drums, but also Song Writer, Producer, and even Actor “. His music fits several genres, “Prog. Rock, Pop, Soft rock, “Blue Eyed Soul”, ….. Apart from Genesis , he’s had 7 major hits on the U.S. charts, with many crossovers. He is definitely one of the Greats. Cool song. ( she really is a good listener. Most adults don’t listen to what’s being said , like that.) 📻🙂
With Genesis alone, Follow You Follow Me, Misunderstanding, Abacab, No Reply at All, Man on the Corner, Mama, Thats All, Invisible Touch, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Land of Confusion (great video), I Can't Dance the biggest ones.
Can't see the video on the tiny screen. Why not increase the video size, and decrease your size. I think some of the original was edited out. There is more guitar solo and another verse missing. 😮
Phil Collins was the drummer of the greatest Progressive Rock band ever imo, Genesis, since 1971. He also became Genesis' lead singer in 1976 when original singer Peter Gabriel left Genesis to go solo. Phil also released many solo albums starting in 1981. He invented the gated reverb drum sound which is that heavy drum sound you hear on the fill. Also used on Peter Gabriel's Intruder, Genesis' Mama, and another Collins song I Don't Care Anymore. He was the most successful and busiest music star of the 1980s. He was sought after to drum on and produce albums for many artists in the 80s. He is one of the greatest drummers of the last 50+ years. Bill Bruford is the only other drummer in his class. If you want to see a great example of his drumming with Genesis, I would recommend this video from 2007 when Phil last was able to drum. (Wrist and hand injuries have prevented him from drumming). He is drumming with the great Chester Thompson, also in this video to the left. Chester was Genesis' live drummer with Phil from 1977 to 2007. ua-cam.com/video/5pvZQI3Tmiw/v-deo.html But to get the full effect, please increase the video screen size so the viewer can see. (PS, I saw Genesis and Phil Collins solo 14 times. So I saw In the Air Tonight 4 times live. It was always spine tingling.
She might do Paul, but I hate it.😄😄 As I've mentioned before, I'm a big Motown fan and I loved the version by The Supremes, and because of that, I've never liked Phil Collins version. That's not to say I won't show it to her, but The Supremes version will come first.
I always love seeing people get introduced to Phil Collins (and hopefully enjoy his music). If Lilly would like to hear to some more Phil Collins I would recommend his performance called 'Live and Loose in Paris'. The energy and creativity there on stage is amazing in my opinion. I really like when artists do something unique on stage. On that note I would also recommend Peter Gabriel 'Secret World Live' and 'Growing Up Live 2016'. Hope you continue your journey in discovering the music that you like!
Great drummer too. I absolutely loved him on the drums, with the Bee Gees at the Nelson Mandela concert. Amazing. Great reactions vid. Nailing it Lilly👌😊
BRAVO for reacting to such an incredible performance by such a historic and talented musical icon... Phil is my second favorite singer/musician, song writer/composer only to my NUMBER ONE favorite, Elton John!!! I've been a Lifelong fan of EJ and his amazing musical career since I was about Lilly's age so I don't know if she has heard some of his songs as well, but would love to watch you both react to more Phil and ANY Elton! Lilly may also know of the animated movies that Phil did the soundtracks for, Tarzan and Brother Bear! And of course, Elton did the soundtrack for the animated movie, The Lion King as well ! Looking forward to enjoying MORE of your reactions to whatever you might choose to discover! Take care, stay well and be happy to you both! From beautiful Calgary, Alberta, Canada! S.
Thank you so much, I'm a big fan of Elton John too, and I think Lilly may know one of his songs called "I'm Still Standing" she certainly knows the Christmas song he did with Ed Sheeran, because I showed it to her at Christmas. That video is on here somewhere.
The video for that would be a great one for her to react to. Funny and laid back. Also another example of Phil's huge gated reverb heavy drum sound, although you don't see him playing drums in the video.
NEVER heard this version before. In answer to Lily's question, this type of music could be described with the all-encompassing term; _Easy Listening,_ which covers every genre from every era.
While I suppose some of Phil Collin's music could potentially fall under that category, "In the Air Tonight" and its dark, atmospheric anger definitely does not.
I get that, most of them don't sound as good as the studio version, but every now and then you get a live performance that is better than the original recording. One of my favourite groups DIRE STRAITS have done some fantastic live versions of their songs.
What a bright little girl. Obviously a bit difficult to explain to her all the background to this particular song, but she asked some intelligent questions & made some very pertinent observations. I suspect she may well have a very successful future in social media in this modern era.
Lilly understood where the song was coming from, she was listening 👍 great education in legendary performances
I appreciate Lilly's patience watching these videos. I would like to see her introduced to older Def Leppard!
Phil Collins are just too great! If Lilly loved this "slow" song by him, I think she's gonna love Sussudio (Play the official music video version) :)
Lilly should watch the Tarzan movie because Phil did all the music for that epic cartoon
Playing the drums and singing at the same time is quite difficult to do and for him to do it as flawless as he does is just......BRAVO!!!!!

Thanks for that, I had no idea about most of that.
Phil Collins is an icon!! Playing drums and singing at the same time is very difficult. He does it with ease. Amazing! Love your reaction!
Thank you Anita.
If Lilly has ever seen the Disney animated Tarzan movie Phil Collins did all the music for the sound track
If Lilly likes Phil Collins, has she heard "Another Day in Paradise" 1989?
No, not a chance that she has heard that yet.
I love Phil collins
Phil Collins a complete musician artist will be eternal for his beautiful and melancholic songs.
I think this maybe falls under the category progpop. I can imagine Genesis doing that song in those days. Do you know Phil's daughter is named Lily? She stars in 'Emily in Paris' and is a fashion model.
By doing things for yourselves you are helping the world! Really, it's not hyperbolic, you are helping people connect to their own past and to others.
Check out the drums, drums and more drums from the same concert
what kind of music? rock-pop.

So cool with a calm kid that can sit still and really listen to music :) Reminds me much of myself as a kid.
Best drum drop ever!!!
Lilly was feeling it

The Song that defined yet transcends a generations, sounds as good today as it did when it was released in January '81
tell her it is Rock music

Phil wrote this song after his divorce. Today Phil been ill and can not hold a drum stick any more. Sad

I've been trying to decrease my size for years, but I'll take on board what you say.
He was 57 when he did this concert.......He can still pack the house......He is EPIC..........AWESOME...
One of the best break-up anthems ever! You are a great dad for introducing Lilly to great music.
Thank you Donna.

In answer to Lily's question, this type of music could be described with the all-encompassing term; _Easy Listening,_ which covers every genre from every era.
This is NOT easy listening. This is Progressive Rock or Progressive Pop. Easy listening is Micheal Bolton or Christopher Cross singing Sailing.
