This song is mystical, Spiritual. I don't care who you are, this song melts steel and cuts through you like butter! Decades have past since Phil made this, and it's still hitting hard.
What I still find difficult to comprehend is his timing. At no point did he speed up to get to the drums, he got there at exactly the right time, to the second. I have watched this performance so many times I have lost count.

Phil Collins is one of very few artists that sound the same in a studio as they do live, and I drive band tour buses so I've seen many many bands live. A TRUE artist at work.
A lot of people are not aware that Phil Collins was partly responsible for the unique sounds of the 80's. When he and his sound engineer discovered gated reverb. This song was the first chart song to use gated reverb on the drums. And thus pioneered the 80's.
Don't know if you're aware, but this is a sometimes disputed point. Hugh padgham worked with xtc on black sea and peter Gabriel's 3rd album, both of which feature this technique, in 1980. Each set of fans will tell you it was their singer/band was the originator but, in the end, it doesn't really matter because it's such a great sound. Safe to say, it came about in 1980.

They they all appeared from the back of the theatre with drums round their necks, banging out the Intruder loop. They walked up and down the ilses for a few minutes, ambled to the stage and belted out the song. Awesome night.

He says in an interview she wanted to take credit for the song, because if she hadn't left him he would nvr have written such a dark song, and she said he was capitalizing on the pain she caused....... Sounds like a real peach huh ???? Lol

@@katie-didellis2437 Sadly - you are not wrong. Phil cannot play drums anymore. He had some severe surgeries (spine) and hardly can walk. He is sitting in a chair at the current Genesis tour (actually, his 20 years old son is playing the drums for Genesis now!) and is singing. And even there, its not the same Phil as before. He really struggles with his health. Its probably his very last tour.
Some songs are immortal and some performances legendary. I have had the pleasure of seeing him live and I know both of these things to be true about this song.

i have learned the value of a really good amp with upgraded capacitors. when a solid state amp goes flatline it is usually the feedback resistor which just lets unlimited current back into the loop which starts the chain. rip technics su-z1. yamaha natural sound 7.1 is a beast if you configure subwoofers to 8 ohm.
Genesis, and Phill Collins specifically had a 5 or so year run in the mid to late 80s that made them as big as any band in the world. They could do no wrong. I was in HS at this time and totally took for granted the amazing musicians we had back then. They are currently on their last tour as Phil can only sit during the shows. I would still go see them if they were near us on the west coast.
I have been a huge fan of his and Genesis for my whole life but never got to see them. Just last month I realized a dream and flew to Ohio to at last see them live. Although Phil isn't as strong as he used to be the show was amazing and to me it was an homage I had to pay to my most favorite musician of all time. His music shaped my life and made me who I am today. I'm also from the west coast and thankfully was able to afford to fly and see them. If you can, go see them. It will for sure be the last time they tour together. It's worth it. Cheers.
As an old musician to a current musician. You are one of the best reactor's. Your mostly quiet during the song. Your text graphics are not overpowering. You listen to the song and give good reactions at the end. Wish there were more reactors like you.
This song is a lesson in Dynamic Range. When those drums kick in they're incredibly powerful because we've had the quieter build up before. When bands try to start the song LOUD and stay loud all the way through it just doesn't work because they've compressed the life out of it. This is why Nirvana was so refreshing. Their "loud part" felt powerful because there was a quiet part. It's like painting. If you want something to look bright there needs to be dark.
I am blessed to have seen Phil with Genesis twice on the Mama tour. They opened the tour in my hometown of Normal, IL, then I saw them a couple of months later in Peoria. Two very long and incredible shows. They always gave you your money's worth.
I enjoy watching people's reaction to hearing it for the first time. I think I enjoy watching reactions from those that know the song but haven't seen this version even more. They didn't know that it could be more amazing. The way the vocals and drumming blending together at the end are incredible.
One of the few reactors that really likes and appreciates the long intro... feeling the tension rising. :) The live performance is 10 times better than the original from the 80s! It just feels more modern and gives you goosebumbs from the beginning to the end.

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums).
As a musician, I'd invite you to check out the Phil Collins-led Genesis song "Turn It On Again" and try to figure out the time signature. It's an incredible, powerful pop song that's far more complex than you thing, and it's huuuuuge.
I have watched this masterpiece of a song and video dozens of times. Phil's sense of timing impresses me every time. At first it appears that he is just wandering around the stage and set, YET he arrives at the drum kit at the exact time for one of the best drum riffs EVER. A master at work.....!!!!! GIRL. You did it right. Watching the official version first gives you the ground to stand on. Then you feel the artists manipulation of the live audience, and enjoy the entertainment they are offering. Love you and your reactions. This is a great song.
I went to the show in 2019 ..... bucket list. This was the only song he stood up for. My wife, a former performer said sitting down and being able to sound good is near impossible.
There's something uniquely perfect about this performance of this song. The way the layers of the song come in one after another. The way Phil paces the stage. The look on his face. I saw this same performance live in Florida on his "First Final Farewell Tour"...simply AMAZING in person...the whole show was fantastic!!!! He ran around stage without seeming to get tired at all...and actually SANG (not synced like most current stars) and he sounds exactly like his albums in person....this is a legend for sure :) *if you aren't doing the drums with him by the end, there's something wrong with you hahaha

You know what. It’s a like for me! Nice job. I like watching the reaction when Phil hits the kit and keeps his vocal tone consistent! Not an easy thing to do! Such different areas in the musical space covered! Timing and whimsical vocal at the same time!
I am not a hardcore fan of Phil Collins but had mad respect for him as a musician, creator and artist. To put an example he composed (with Mark Mancina) Disney's Tarzan soundtrack and recorded the lyrics (of all of them) in English, Italian, German, Spanish, and French versions, mind you he does not speak any of these languages besides English and was already half deaf by then. Mad respect for Mr Phil Collins.
I love watching people react to this video. It always delivers and you can see each individual emotionally drained after this performance. I haven't seen many performances that I can say that about but this one.....let me put it this way. If this performance doesn't leave you emotionally drained then you don't have any emotions... now imagine what it must have been like to be there.

@Hicky Hicky tastes differ which is alright. Genesis is and always will be my most favourite band, they have been since 1976 when I got money for my 9th birthday and bought A Trick Of The Tail which they’d released some weeks earlier. I became a die-hard fan and later a serious collector.

Every time I go to a Phil concert I have to be on the stage right side of the venue just so I can watch him play even his small part of this song.

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums).
Still get goosebumps 40 years on from first hearing this,that says it all.
As a musician, I'd invite you to check out the Phil Collins-led Genesis song "Turn It On Again" and try to figure out the time signature. It's an incredible, powerful pop song that's far more complex than you thing, and it's huuuuuge.
I have watched this masterpiece of a song and video dozens of times. Phil's sense of timing impresses me every time. At first it appears that he is just wandering around the stage and set, YET he arrives at the drum kit at the exact time for one of the best drum riffs EVER. A master at work.....!!!!! GIRL. I believe you enjoyed that as much as we did!!!! True talent on display here! SKILL...... Your heart is racing because you just reviewed perfection..... THANK YOU...................

I went to the show in 2019 ..... bucket list. This was the only song he stood up for. My wife, a former performer said sitting down and being able to sound good is near impossible.

This song is so well constructed and performed. I enjoy the crowd taking part helping with the beat. I believe the entire world knows the chorus to this song. Plus most folks play air-drums with Phil when he sits down with his kit. A point you drive home when you smile real big and play your air drums. I am would love to seen this concert....

I saw this same performance live in Florida on his "First Final Farewell Tour"...simply AMAZING in person...the whole show was fantastic!!!! He ran around stage without seeming to get tired at all...and actually SANG (not synced like most current stars) and he sounds exactly like his albums in person....this is a legend for sure :) *if you aren't doing the drums with him by the end, there's something wrong with you hahaha

Check out the recent performances of Phil with his son, Nic on drums. The kid's definitely heading in the right direction with his skills. Sorry to hear Phil is in such poor health these days, though. The man is a legend on the kit!
You know what. It’s a like for me! Nice job. I like watching the reaction when Phil hits the kit and keeps his vocal tone consistent! Not an easy thing to do! Such different areas in the musical space covered! Timing and whimsical vocal at the same time!
I am not a hardcore fan of Phil Collins but had mad respect for him as a musician, creator and artist.
To put an example he composed (with Mark Mancina) Disney's Tarzan soundtrack and recorded the lyrics (of all of them) in English, Italian, German, Spanish, and French versions, mind you he does not speak any of these languages besides English and was already half deaf by then.
Mad respect for Mr Phil Collins.

@Hicky Hicky tastes differ which is alright. Genesis is and always will be my most favourite band, they have been since 1976 when I got money for my 9th birthday and bought A Trick Of The Tail which they’d released some weeks earlier. I became a die-hard fan and later a serious collector.

This song like so many of the great 80s songs Stand the test of time and will never go away. The fact that they actual sang rhe songs live with no help fron the tech world compared to so many of the artist of today says everything about the talent these people have.

Phil wrote this song just as a practice track which he could program his drum machine to and then come in on real drums, but when his manager heard the tape he said this is huge you gotta release this.. and to our immense pleasure he did.
