People had to "lawyer up" to get Toyota to patch that crappy 8-speed put in the 2017 Highlander. There were problems with it in the Camry's too and now in the Tacoma. Since the Tundra had a Safety recall because it would leave dead in the middle of the road, the hybrids weren't included because they would get it off the highway. People buy Toyotas vehicles to last longer than 120k. Extending the warranty is not good enough when an engine replacement is 30k. These engines need to be replaced. Thanks for covering this and please keep it up.

There is a lot going on we don’t know about concerning suppliers worldwide and pressure to lower quality and cut costs, most likely China behind it in an effort to kill competition for Chinese automakers. Toyota is the biggest automaker and has been resisting this threat. My guess is they have been targeted for destruction by powerful forces.
In May of 2024 they updated 2 bearings in the engine, but no confirmation that it fixed the issue, we'll have to wait a few years to see. Many 2024s have failed already, it's just hard to know when the engines were made, or whether the updated bearing parts were actually related to being a fix or not.
The second gen is a good buy. You can't fork over the industry standard $60k plus for a new pickup truck, not a Rolls Royce, from any of the truck makers today; then in the same breath state the tried and true 2nd gen Tundra, proven by hundreds of thousands of trouble-free miles, is a bad dog because it's value is going up. I didn't buy a Chevy silverado because of the v8-v4 engine disabler, the eco-boost turbo 215 cu in f150 v6, and I threw a net under my Dodge cars for years to catch the parts falling off....making me not want to do the same for a $75k Ram. So who ya gonna call if you got to get to work tomorrow, and the next day for the next 30 years, if not a 2nd gen Tundra? Bosses want you at work, not on the phone with your Toyota rep and setting up camp in the Service dept waiting for the Toyota "fix" with that motor (which will be the same motor after the fix - a mousy 215 cu in V6 turbo or turbo hybrid) which Toyota thought would at least last past their warranty obligation. The Tundra three is the stinky dog under the table, and will stink even more after Toyota discharges its warranty obligation and the 3rd Gen owner is then on the repair bill hook forevermore.
Toyota better do the right thing and take care of their customers. If Toyota fails to take care of their customers the company will cease to exist in the US. They should teach this in business school. Bean counters take over a company, say Boeing or Toyota, get a hardon for cutting costs by cutting quality, and then crater the company's reputation. The cycle only repeats itself. Finance people go through life with blinders on. Their one track minds can only focus on cost cutting to the exclusion of everything else. Letting them call the shots is as safe as letting a toddler play with a machete.
Why does every show hate so much? Ford and gmc got way more issue compare to Toyota. All I am saying is that all this new technology that’s coming looks like they rushed and produce a mass product without going through proper testing or rnd
Don't be fooled if Toyota was really taken care of him, they would have called the Honda dealership and told him he could pick up a brand new Ridgeline and they would have told him it's a real reliable good quality and it rides very beautiful!!! That's what they would have done if they were taken care of him and they should have told them they will take the Toyota off of his hands and they will trash it get rid of it recycle it since the truck is pretty much at 70% plastic they can recycle it for water bottles or any other kind of plastic they want to use for anything else that's how you take care of a customer!!!

Happy with my decision not hear to mess with any turbos.
I see the same thing around here. Nobody is buying these ridiculously priced trucks and the prices are coming down.
Crazy times. Feel bad for them, always been a toyota fan. Hope they can recover
do youse feel bad for the "stuck" owners or the corporation that cut every corner it could to take care of its stockholders?
I used to be one of those Toyota fan boys until I bought a new 2020 Camry. I'm not sure if I want to take another chance after my experience dealing with Toyota Corp. Toyota went as far as lying about putting block sealer in the engine trying to get rid of the strong overheat smell.
@jeanclaude7018 There nose started growing in 2017 with the Highlander. All the junk started with the 2018 Camry. The Camry got worse in 2020.
I wonder if any issues Lexus GX550 and Toyota Sequoia with similar engines?
People had to "lawyer up" to get Toyota to patch that crappy 8-speed put in the 2017 Highlander. There were problems with it in the Camry's too and now in the Tacoma. Since the Tundra had a Safety recall because it would leave dead in the middle of the road, the hybrids weren't included because they would get it off the highway. I'm waiting to see if there's going to be another Toyota-gate over the new Tacoma's over the transmission problems.
Yup. I saw that Toyota expanded the Taco transmission recall to include more VINs I believe...will be interesting to see how many are affected.
So glad I have an older Tacoma, built when quality was still a thing with Toyota.
Toyota should at least warranty the hybrid to 120k miles. Come on make a believer out of us.
Hybrid owner here. Hope Toyota decides to be honest with us. Got rid of my ram because I wanted that vaunted reliability. Looking like that might have been a bad call.
It's hard to say. I still see some higher mileage Tundras too, not all of them suffer the same demise. I'm a big fan of Toyota overall but...this launch has been rough for them.
Bought a 2000 Toyota - it will last forever.
Bought a 2024 Toyota - better lawyer up. 😐
People buy Toyotas vehicles to last longer than 120k. Extending the warranty is not good enough when an engine replacement is 30k. These engines need to be replaced. Thanks for covering this and please keep it up.
They need to buy them back or something. A family friend had his engine replaced, but in our state that gets it a rebuilt title. They got a bigger camper and needed a truck with more payload, but he can't get within $15k of normal blue book value on a trade. So they are stuck with the truck and a camper it cant safely tow.
Sold my 2022 3rd Gen last month. I actually made out pretty good with trade value. Totally would have kept it however I just had my first child | I need something that's not going to die on the interstate. I enjoyed the truck overall. Hopefully Toyota can get these engines figured out.
This is going to follow Toyota for years. Many will refuse to ever buy a Tundra again, ever. And as the law of 10 days....that person will recommend to 10 people to do the same. And those people will each tell another 10 people about the story, who will then each tell 10 people. No pity from me. Toyota thought it could get away gouging their loyal customers, reduce costs and reduce quality, and think we wouldn't notice. Thank gosh we do. Bye Toyota
Nissan just moved up in ranking
I love mine , bought it few months ago built in 6/24 should be good
If Mine fails/hybrid, I’ll demand a crate motor. The problem exists in design obviously as you stated. Spot on recall logic.
They will be good once bugs are worked out. If they can get the price under control, I would look at it in a couple more years
So glad I sold mine 2 mths ago. 2022 Limited trd. Now I can sleep better🎉.
what did you end up replacing it with?
I think the debris in the block is baloney. Toyota imo had /has crap main bearing journals . The part number was changed Jan this year.
So thankful I kept my Honda. Really was turned off by the nimh battery tech and basically a mild hybrid, but glad I didn’t get one at this point.
Goodbye Toyota.
That’s crazy bro ….. got a Sequoia TRD pro close to 20k and haven’t had any issues thank god. That’s a real damn problem hopefully it’s not as severe a hit, I really love the power and drive would hate to have to switch to a ford or Chevy granted I do enjoy my Silverado as well.
It’s a 24 🤞 hopefully not a lemon.
Yeah it's a tough call. If you own one, I guess just run it til the end of the powertrain warranty. I'd be worried to keep it much past that but...that's just me, I'm not a big risk taker :).
I'm on my 4th transmission on my 2017 siverado. First one grenaded at 120K
@@artvandelay5749 8 speed right? Those were horrible for sure, sorry you had such bad luck. Are you thinking about upgrading to a Tundra or something else?
@TheCarGuyOnline bought a '24 4runner ORP in Febuary. Love it.
Also I don’t want to risk breaking down when towing. That’s kicking you while you’re down.
Better retool for the 5.7 v8 and go back to reliability. My 20 has barely depreciated based on Auto Trader.
Toyota will bounce back once these engines get sorted out. Toyota should absolutely recall all v6 twin turbos
Unfortunately, Toyota is doubling down on the turbo/hybrid engines and making all their trucks and SUV’s cheaper and smart people are definitely noticing and not buying them.
Brand Bois are sad.

I have a 2023 Tundra SR5 crew max 4x4 and have NOT received ANY recall notice for the gas engine. Does this model fall into the issue category or are the 2023 models not affected?
I’m stuck with a hybrid tundra and sequoia with their notorious vibration problem. Toyota will not stand behind them and brush off customers by telling them the vehicle is operating as intended. I can’t stand driving my new Toyotas and can’t wait to get rid of them. I know ppl talk a lot of smack about ford but based on reviews, ford seems to stand behind their product and customer service.
Do you have the roof rack on your Sequoia? I removed the roof rack off of mine and that eliminated all vibration issues I had
@@mattparker4892no roof rack. Alignment checked, wheels torqued. Even paid for balance. Fts claimed he checked everything else.
Im pretty much done with Toyota for now. If they don't fully recall these trucks, I will be done for good.
Keeping my 94 Land Cruiser. Ah the good old days! Cheers 🥃🥃
I heard through a good source that the tundra will be discontinued due to all the issues and they are going to focus more on the Tacoma
It’s a safety recall. The hybrid can still steer and brake if the engine stops while driving because they are designed to drive electric only. They will not be pulled into the same recall
They will handle them case by case
It is sad that the federal government ended reliability. At least since 2020.
This sucks so much. I was actually fine with and excited about the new hybrid drivetrain. When it works, it seems to be awesome. Now I’m shopping for a 5.7L Tundra or a 4.6L GX.
And tundra is up in sales !
Same engine same problem so it should be in the recall, I do feel bad for Toyota and Toyota owners right now, can't say Toyota reliability is so good anymore
I'm so grateful that I was able to purchase my '21 Tundra TRD Sport Premium CM (Canadian model). Someone had cancelled their pre-order at the same dealer that I had a '22 pre-order at. I only pre-ordered a '22 because I was late to the game to get the last year of the V8 and couldn't find one as they were all sold out across Canada. One month out I received a call from my dealer asking me if I would like to purchase a '21 TRD Sport Premium CM in mbm which is the exact model that I had been desperately searching for. I was number seven on the list of '22 pre-orders and the six ahead of me all turned it down. I'm extremely fortunate as the odds were definitely not in my favor. I was told that I purchased the very last '21 Tundra delivered to Canada. I searched high and low for two months trying to find this exact truck/mode/color and it was handed to me by the salesperson that I had been dealing with at my dealership. 😊🙏👍
My 95 lexus ls400 has 265k miles, needs an oil change, has a leaky power steering pump, valve cover gaskets and i would hesitate to drive it across country today.
What did Toyota do to fix this issue in the 2025 models or are they the same bearings?
In May of 2024 they updated 2 bearings in the engine, but no confirmation that it fixed the issue, we'll have to wait a few years to see. Many 2024s have failed already, it's just hard to know when the engines were made, or whether the updated bearing parts were actually related to being a fix or not.
So how much is an extended warranty on these things now? Use to be dirt cheap for a Toyota. But now???
I think extended warranties are now in the $4000+ range, they were cheaper until warranty companies caught on.
I really like the 2nd gen, I'll just have to wait for prices to drop a bit, right now they are nutso.
Sooo question is why is it that only Tundra owners are reporting this issues , but Sequoia line is perfectly fine? Don’t they all use the same engine?
Same engine yes. There have been sequoias reported but not many, they also sold 1/10th as many as tundras and hybrids seem to take longer to fail.
Toyota better do the right thing and take care of their customers. If Toyota fails to take care of their customers the company will cease to exist in the US. Toyota already has reliability issues which they never had before. How Toyota takes care of customers moving forward will say a lot about the company.
I have two Toyota V6's. A 3.3 and a 3.5 liter. Both normally aspirated. My goal is to never own a hybrid, turbo, direct injection or cylinder deactivation. Also want to avoid stop/start.
General motors making da best car now
What a desapointment on toyota, already thinking for 150😢😢😢😢
I literally just bought a 2020 Toyota Tundra with the 5.7L engine. ALLLLLLLLLLL these "people"........i am trying to be polite here........that wanted the six banger engines get really what they had coming to them. It is hard to feel sorry for people when they know that the 5.7L is the king and they went with something different. They wanted something with a change AND THEY SURE GOT IT, LOL!! You cannot fix stupid at the end of the day...............ALWAYS remember that!!
I don’t feel sorry for these people, (3rd gen owners) they way overpaid for a CLEARLY Defective product. So much information was out there even in the beginning! They’re Suckers 😂😂😂😂
Theywanted better MPG‘s, regardless people are always buying newer vehicles. And yes, they should expect quality. That’s normal.
@@gtrance3567 Yeah but they didn’t get better MPG’s, they’re nearly identical to the 5.7L. I suspect if Toyota put a 8 speed transmission in the 5.7, they would improve MPG’s ..
@@spinfish1434I’ve had both, the fuel economy is way better in the new gen. 20-25% better.
@ There have been multiple tests done by owners with real Data showing the increased mileage is minuscule at best, barely noticeable. Many have complained expecting to see an improvement where there is none.
Here in the bahamas we don't buy toyota trucks they don't hold up very good compared to trucks because we are so close to sea water
Replaced with another bad engine?
The PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN... On with life
Hybrids have been failing since the beginning. Toyota claims it's not a "Safety" issue. 2023 and 2024 Tundras are still failing. It's a design issue, not just the claimed "debris" issue. Toyota should give ALL TTV6 a transferrable unlimited mileage warranty.
Agreed and unfortunately the replacement engine people are getting won't have a longer warranty.
Priced them so high glad they’re failing
Thank the lord I have a Ford!
Just don't go near there. Keep away from Turbo.
I have bought 3 Toyota’s and I’m pissed. I have lost my ass on this Tundra and the motor is 30k. We need a class action lawsuit. Toyota needs to expand the recall.
Good thing this won’t ever pertain to any of the fourth generation Tacoma’s!!🤷♂️😳
I mean, they could just bring their reliable Diesels to NA, that would give the range and efficiency plus durability.... no?
Hybrid or not if that block is in the truck replace it with turbos.
They bought back my neighbor’s hybrid Tundra under lemon law.
I have a 2024 hybrid and havent seen no problems and with all this id still choose toyota of ford chevy or dodge.
Toyota went too far too quick. They should have slapped hybrids in place of turbos and called it a day. But no, they turbo’ed the hybrids and went to a smaller engine. So cute that it blew up in their faces. What’s wrong with a v6 and hybrid for an extra oomph and mpg? And they applied this flawed formula to all their line up AND hiked the prices too. You don’t go turbo unless you have a plan. The ford 2.7 with the CGI block, that is turbo done right.
Toyota is so complacent on their recalls including the RAV4 transmission failures and oil consumption issues that they are finally losing brand loyalty to the informed. Will not buy any newer or some older Toyota products. Overpriced garbage
I don’t think it is fair or right that if you blow up you Tundra engine you get a short block & it’s quality depends on the quality of the local tech who assembles it. Recalled Tundras get crate engines. All Tundras with blown up engines should get crate engines. All should be treated equally.
What’s the FB group link?
The groups is named "2022+ Toyota Tundra Owners" that has the biggest following/member count, there are some others too for 3rd gen. If you search in groups, it should show up, then you need to request approval.
@ Ty! I’m more interested in the previous gen as yourself. But will check it out!

No Shit!!! And since Toyota ignored the hybrids I got rid of it. They consider the hybrid a non safety issue since in their theory the hybrid mode could move the vehicle out of harms way in the event of a catastrophic failure…. Which is complete BS. They ignored the issue for 3 model years and have yet to include the hybrids. So I tapped out.
Never thought I’d see the day where my Jeep gladiator is much much more reliable than a Toyota truck. No crap hybrid system. No dumb ass 4 cylinder engine(Tacoma) and I can use the tailgate manually 😂
Give them all a new engine-or they will remove their loyal customers by now they already done this
Time to give the owners the 5.7
I didn’t know “debris in the engine” could be still in there after 47k miles and multiple oil and filter changes. Not buying the debris theory Toyota drummed up.
I would just switch brands if I were buying right now.
Don't be rediculas. The reason they are not on the list currently is because the safety aspect is not a part of the hybrid engine since the electric motor will take them off the road and out of the safety risk. The hybrids will be part of this update in the end.
They may not be part of the recall unless there is a class action.
@TheCarGuyOnline 25 year Toyota Service Manager and they will replace all the engines from manufacturer dates of the effective engine. Toyota will stand behind the product unlike many of the others.
Avoid Toyota trucks. Overpriced, under featured and their main selling point of reliability is no longer a strength.
What is your recommendation if reliability is your main buying criteria.?
Case study on how to destroy your brand.
LOL
They should teach this in business school. Bean counters take over a company, say Boeing or Toyota, get a hardon for cutting costs by cutting quality, and then crater the company's reputation. The cycle only repeats itself. Finance people go through life with blinders on. Their one track minds can only focus on cost cutting to the exclusion of everything else. Letting them call the shots is as safe as letting a toddler play with a machete.
Do you mean that BOTH of the Hybrids ( i-FORCE MAX ) you own are "dead"?
