    The meaning of the song is a parent telling a son to be a “simple” man, not live lavishly or have a complicated life. Pay the bills put food on the table for your family, etc and you will be “satisfied”

    This song was written through a grieving process when band members lost a grandmother and mother at around same time. This song is an amalgam of the advice these two influential women had. It transcends the personal and becomes something everyone can relate to . . .

    Lynyrd Skynyrd is absolute "Gold Standard of Southern Rock". A genre where you have slow, melody focused sections, combined with "heavy" guitar sections and often having a story or message in the lyrics, and normally combining a "build up" of music and lyrics for hitting key points to get across. They may have been one of the most influential bands for roughly 30 years (80's-2000's) but have been slowly replaced by later bands for modern times as the "influence" type of bands.
    Now, as far as the whole "Linken Park/Motely Crue" issue? I get it, they both have some good songs and have also been wildly popular over the years for one group or another. But I know that as soon as Metallica gets tossed in that mix, Park and Crue will be left in the dust, especially when you consider the song structures of Metallica that can change directions literally from one verse to the other off of one note.
    Vocally? Well, vocals are all subjective and you can never really say that one singer is "perfect" for everyone. But there are some who are clearly "better" than others, but don't limit yourself to only male singers. The Wilson sisters (Ann/Nancy) from Heart are considered to be the best female vocalist in Rock-N-Roll, and their vocal range and ability still shocks new listeners to this day.

    • @obxtasy626
      @obxtasy626 Рік тому +5

      As far as female rock singers, there is Janis Joplin, and then there is everybody else. No one approaches her. And most vocal critics put Pat Benatar ahead of Ann and Nancy. PB has an operatic voice - literally, since she trained as an opera singer. For male vocalists, hard to top Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin. Hard to top Led Zeppelin as bands go. As you said, it's all subjective; except Janis lol. She's the Jimi Hendrix of female rock vocalists. Ironic that they both died within a month of each other, in 1970, and both were 27. Jim Morrison joined the '27 Club' a few months later, with Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse to follow.

      Metallica has some iconic tracks that’s forsure…..as far as hard rock goes they gotta be up there with the greatest like Black Sabbath or Led Zep. And Heart has some of the most recognizable hits ever that’s how crazy good they were. Love the song “magic man”. Pat Benatar’s track “heartbreaker” is bad ass and I believe it was used in a movie recently. Think the movie was “Nobody” which turned out to be awesome

      @@obxtasy626what??? Janis Joplin ?!!?! For emotion, undoubtedly. I personally find it hard to listen to Joplin. For singing ability, she is a hard no. If you want to hear the best current female rock singer, check out one of the greatest southern rock bands ever, Tedeschi Trucks Band.

      there's few "musician's" who are music stars any more though, the "pop star" promoted by corporate media is every genre now and it started in the 80's with digital music(not against it, rap is my fav genre, just that creativity became less valued than imitation of trends).
      What mainstream pop star isn't either politically silent, promoted as a mouthpiece of the Democratic party or labeled racist & Nazi if they're right-wing by corporate media?

    When my daughter was pregnant with her son, she dedicated this song to him, because it, perfectly describes her son’s father, and what they want for him. I call it Wyatt’s song, and I can’t listen to it without thinking of my sweet grandson.

You guys are adorable and I am so happy to see your generation exploring music before autotuning was a thing. The music then was the real deal. No annoying glowing videos in the background, all focused on the music and vocals. A real treat. Grateful to have come of age during those days.

    Ronnie Van Zandt was one of THE greatest singers ever. The feelings he put into his songs came straight from his soul. These were learned and lived life lessons. I was 12 in 77(actually didn't turn 12 till Dec of 77) but knew almost all their songs by heart already. If I didn't get the meaning my big sister and/or her friends were happy to explain it to me. So much good stuff in Skynyrd's music. Prime example right here, every mother with a son should sit them down & listen to it together. I have personal songs of theirs that my life has mirrored, not gonna get to personal, but am cool saying Gimme Back My Bullets fits real good.

    Thanks guys, you make me smile. I will never forget the first time I heard this band on AM radio, late at night in middle school. Music was so different then and they were emerging from the pack of what seemed like so many great groups. Since that time it has been like a tidal wave of creativity rolling over us that has no end. Music is like food for our soul, and a life without it would just be sad. Check out "We Are the World" some time, it is beautiful to see so many styles fit so perfect. We need more of that these days. Blessings Brothers.

      I love the live version with the Rolling Stones logo. The Stones manager to Skynard to not go down the tounge of thier logo, as that was for Mick Jagger only, well when the Freebird solo was being played Ronnie dared Leon Wilkerson to go down the tounge, and slowly Leon, Ronnie Van Zandt,Allen Collins and Gary Rossington all start to creep down the logo and just jam out to the solo. It was great... it also is shown at the end of the Lynard Skynard documentary on Netflix
