Brother…this is the type of music that transcends race, generations, economics, etc. This is music that speaks truth across the realities of life that we all experience no matter where you find yourself on this Earth.
It speaks volumes that a song about living simply is the one that so easily transcends all the complications (race, age, status, etc) that we construct around ourselves. It really shows just how unnecessary all those constructions are. When it comes to living a fulfilling life, none of that matters one bit.
It ALWAYS surprises me when I see people react to music that isn't traditionally to their taste. Music that reaches down, grabs you by the heart and takes you on a journey. Tells you a story. It's timeless and color blind.
AMEN Brother! As a older fellow, I love when someone finds a song that is timeless. I listen to my dads music, my Grand parents and Older. Music speaks to something deep in our souls. Even now sometimes something new Grabs me and sits me down to LISTEN.

I didn’t have any sons. But my girls had only sons. So I dedicate this song to all 4 grandson. My youngest daughter is doing a graduation picture album for her only child which is an only son. She is writing the lines of the lyrics on each page.
Shortly after Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother died and taking some advice Gary Rossington's mothers gave to her son, they got together in Van Zant's apartment and started telling stories about them. Rossington came up with a chord progression, and Van Zant wrote the lyrics based on advice the women had given them over the years. They wrote it in about an hour.
Honor your parents. It does not say you have to like or love them. Though that would be " nice". God's promise is a good, long life. This song "simple man" is a great lesson why. How to "live" life, based on the wisdom and experience of our elders. Wow! Cheesy but true. Smarts. Soul.

Ronnie Van Zandt was an amazing singer, they said he would sing barefoot so he could feel the energy of the crowd. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the only band I have ever heard that sounds as good live as they do on a record.
I think they sounded better live. First saw them in 1976, and didn't even know who they were. I went to see Ted Nugent. Ronnie came out on the stage barefooted, took a swig of Jack Daniels, put it on the stage by the mic, and introduced the band. They then proceeded to totally blow Ted Nugent out of the water. He used to say, “ Man, we were just a bunch of guys playing music in this barn and it was always really hot in there.” Check out The Ballad of Curtis Loew. That’s another one of my favorites.
My son and I always dance to this. This is my song for my son. I had 3 children but God decided he needed my baby boy and my daughter back 3 1/2 yrs ago. My son that is still with me knows if this comes on we are dancing. 😁 Besides the fact these are my home boys. I lived on Brick yard road around the corner from Ronnie Van Zants home where he lived when he died.
Lost my mom 2 years ago and sometimes it still doesn't feel real. We used to text everyday & I still have all her msgs & voicemails. May you find peace & comfort in the memories & hold them close to your heart. Hugs & love to you 💓
My Daddy was a Simple Man and he passed his absolute love for Skynyrd down to me. Even though I cry every time I hear any of their music because I miss my father, I listen to honor his memory.
When my son was just a little thing, I sang this to him every night before bed. He's now 35 & this is still our song, only now he always dances with me to it as I sing it to him.
We have the same story my son is 30 now...they were playing this at a wedding we were at when he was 17 and he grabbed me to dance and at the end we noticed everybody was crying it's one of the sweetest moments I will always cherish...
This song was always one of my faves. One day, driving my kids home from school- while this song was on the radio, my oldest, my son, in the backseat, began crying. He was 11? I noticed his reaction. And turned back and said, “what’s wrong?” He said, “I just figured out what this song said…!” I will never forget that moment.

I too have seen them multiple times, twice before the plane crash and at least four times since. I recently saw them a few weeks ago with my 27 year old daughter in Indy excellent show. The best part was hearing her sing along with all the songs. There is hope for the younger generations.

One of my favorite songs I heard growing up. Great message. I'm female, and I know it's from a man's POV, but it made an impact on me as a little girl and I still try to live this way. I think it's good advice for anyone. Be humble, be loving, be grateful.
@@nickyjames1985 I saw _Bad Company_ at the Reno Rib Cook off in 2012 I think. Great show! Also I saw _Lynyrd Skynyrd_ at what was then called the Reno Hilton back in like 1994. Zakk Wilde's band _Pride and Glory_ opened with a _Ted Nugent_ sandwich in the middle. THAT whole show was amazing!
I make sure all 3 of my sons hear this song regularly so they think of me one day when they hear it. ❤️ This OG version, but the Shinedown one is great too!
That’s the first thing I thought of too! But, I’m a big (old only) Shinedown fan. NOTTTT what they’ve got going on these days with the 2nd pair of guitarists, etc….😜 (BUT, I respect other people’s choices and tastes too- just not for me!) I’m good with the original crew!😉 TAKE CARE ❣️
I'll say this. As far back as I can remember whenever this song would play my mom would say this is her song to me. To this day she still says it. I'm 32 now and this song can't play without me thinking of my mom and the advice the lyrics hold. It is good advice and in many ways I can see how it has influenced my life and my decisions. Especially when I finally grew up enough to forget I already knew everything. I've been incredibly blessed in my career and life and have probably lost sight of that wisdom at times, but I've hit bottom a few times and had to rebuild too. And those times are when these lyrics really hit home.
The best life was in the 70's I loved the music I loved my life it was the best Thank you God for blessing me with the simple life and memories of a wonderful childhood in the 60's & 70's 🙏
Lot of times we don't appreciate this kind of advice until we are older. No one wants to hear this when they are 17 and they feel the world is about to become theirs.
I first heard this when I was 17 and I found the truth in it back then. I was always told that I had an “old soul”, but now that I’m pushing 50, everyone now tells me that I live like a younger man. And I have pretty much lived this song for all those years; lot of happiness and sadness over all those intervening years, but I wouldn’t trade any of it.
You are doing such an awesome job of letting everyone know that we as Americans are the same and have so much more in common than the media and our government want us to believe! Keep it going!!
I was alive when the plane crashed and to this day I am still affected by it i was a huge skynyrd fan 💔 I am glad that a younger generation gets to appreciate this music
I was like 16 when I first heard this and it changed the way I saw life forever, for the better. Hands down, one of my favorite Skynyrd songs and one of my favorite overall.
Shinedown's cover is ok. I can also say the vocalist is technically better but, Ronnie's vocals fit this tune better. I still prefer this version hands down.

He used to say, “ Man, we were just a bunch of guys playing music in this barn and it was always really hot in there.” Check out The Ballad of Curtis Loew. That’s another one of my favorites.
Ain't no shame in shedding a tear on this one man. Straight pulls on the heart everytime. One love
Truly a song where u can feel the wait of his words
I did shed a tear and watching my young friend enjoy and understand it brought another tear
The world holds up so many shiny objects that they want us to strive for but you will never find happiness and fulfillment in shiny objects
In short, materialistic.
I lost my Mom this past September , and right now this feels like it was sent to me from my Mom up in Heaven - Thank You , my Brother ❤️❤️❤️
Lost my mom 2 years ago and sometimes it still doesn't feel real. We used to text everyday & I still have all her msgs & voicemails. May you find peace & comfort in the memories & hold them close to your heart. Hugs & love to you 💓
May you see you Mother in Heaven one day Mike. In the name of Jesus Yeshua the Christ. Amen.
@@scarletjohnston741 May you also see your Mother in Heaven. Praise be to Yah almighty! In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
My mother has been in the ground for 15 years last Dec. 7th. It never gets better, but it does get easier.
So sorry for your loss. You will be together again in heaven. Blessings
My Daddy was a Simple Man and he passed his absolute love for Skynyrd down to me. Even though I cry every time I hear any of their music because I miss my father, I listen to honor his memory.
This song will make ya cry the older ya get. Life experience is hard. Older ya get, the more funerals ya attend. And then one day it's your turn.
This is the kind of music that when you listen to it so does the neighborhood.
I'm 63 I was 17 when this was released and I still cry dude. Great band . thanks for the memories!
Lynyrd Skynyrd is America's greatest rock and roll band. They are a national treasure. (period)
To this day, lyrically, still one of the most relevant songs ever written in any genre of music.
Breathlessly beautiful.
This song was always one of my faves. One day, driving my kids home from school- while this song was on the radio, my oldest, my son, in the backseat, began crying. He was 11? I noticed his reaction. And turned back and said, “what’s wrong?” He said, “I just figured out what this song said…!”
I will never forget that moment.
I just lost my son. Hold on to that forever! God bless.
@@danielryan9076 I'm sorry for you loss brother, take care and hold dear to the moments you had with him! Some day I shall also be blessed with a child of my own.
@@danielryan9076 My heart goes out to you, we WILL all be reunited again with our Love Ones and the Lord! ❤
Amen
I have two sons in their thirties that grew up listening to this, I’d talk to them about the lyrics.
It brings joy to my soul when I hear it on their playlists.
This song is the essence of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Thank you for recognizing the simplicity of lifestyle promulgated by this song. If we all just lived this way, huh?
Very best song to introduce you to Southern Rock.....a mix of rock an r&b
This was my husband’s song. It was played at his funeral.
He had a very good taste in music, may he Rest In Peace.
He's smiling down.
It's going to be played at mine!!! Together with SRV Life Without You!!!
He told me to tell you he still loves you.no matter what. Always.
😿😿 Rest in Eternal Love
I love your reaction. And you're absolutely spot-on. Many jewels in this one.
I'm an old grumpy white guy (not really grumpy) and I grew up on Lynyrd Skynyrd. I love to see the music of my youth jump the generational and cultural gap. Thank you young people for keeping these classic alive!
I so agree! Van, i love your observations, and thoughtful reactions. I also watch Jojo and LOVED the Larry Bird videos. Poor little guy, he wants so badly for Lebron to be better than Larry. Hold on to your dreams! Lol.
Classic ever happened to a human kind on earth. This song got most folks crying, I tell you.
This was gonna be me and mom's 1st dance song at my wedding. She passed away before I got married so me and my sister danced to it. LOVE YOU MOM
There's no such thing as a bad Lynyrd Skynyrd song 🔥🤘💜
Facts
No Truer Words have Ever been Spoken, Ma'am!!! This kinda dates me, but I saw the Original (and ONLY) Lynyrd Skynyrd 6 times. Would have been 7 but for a plane crash. Met several members of the band at a bar on PCB, FLA ohh so long ago.......nice folks.....about 6 months before the crash.
Yeah there is. Freebird. Always hated that song and hated it even more listening to live music and some yahoo screams out FREEBIRD. Give me a break. But do like this song and Sweet Home Alabama.
@@s.e.6616 admit it. You don’t like Freebird because at every concert of any genre you have at least three assholes screaming “FREEBIRD”. It’s popular to hate that song, but in actuality it’s one of the greatest songs ever written.
@@geetar82 you are absolutely correct. That is what made me hate that song to this day, but I still think there's better regardless. 🤣
As a southern man I love this track, always have, my mom used to sing it to me when I was a lilin' back in the early 80's..... but man it kills me because I miss my mamma......she was a GREAT mom.
I started playing this song for my son when he was just a baby. He’s 22 now and listened to the words and lives this very way. And plays this song all the time. Stay blessed 🙏🙏
Same here, my son is also 22. We sing it together now💞💞. Precious

I'm an old rocker from the 60s, much respect for sharing your perspective of my favorite song young man. Live long, be happy, and keep the faith.
You made me think of Bob Marley and his rendition of "Don't Worry, Be Happy". ✌️
@@JohnSmith-ft2tw Bob Marley last words in front of a camera "listen to that voice in your head " amazing wisdom !
Our Heavenly Father teaches all to be simple me. Love and understand.
As soon as the music starts the chills hit. Every time I hear this song. Perfection in artistry
No one could do it like Ronnie Van Zant. He died tragically in 1977 in a plane crash
You know it! 😥
correct shinedown honored this song very well though
@@streetracer1086 did you know all the members of shutdown grew up around the Van Zant family. Thay played the free Byrd in Jacksonville Beach for years before they hit it big. Also if you notice every song on there 1st album is tied to a Skinned song.
You got that right !
@@jamesmcd71 i did know most of that shinedown are one of my top bands not each song being tied to a skynyrd song though did not know that but im not versed enough in skynyrd to know all their songs
This song and All I Can Do is Write About it are my fav skynyrd songs
Great song! Timeless. True. Teaches.
I was fortunate enough to have seen them live several times, before and after the plane crash. When I saw this song live, I was teary-eyed, and had goosebumps. I sing this song to my boys, my oldest is 42 and I still sing it too him. I am glad to see younger generations enjoy the music that I grew up on. Great reaction my man!
Same❤️
I saw them in Salt Lake City in 1977. It was amazing! I’ll never forget “Free Bird” live…
I too have seen them multiple times, twice before the plane crash and at least four times since. I recently saw them a few weeks ago with my 27 year old daughter in Indy excellent show. The best part was hearing her sing along with all the songs. There is hope for the younger generations.
You don't have to lie to kick it. This song makes me cry every time I hear it. My mom passed away in 2019. When I'm not having such a good day this song seems to find my playlist. Have a blessed day everybody.
One of my favorite songs I heard growing up. Great message.
I'm female, and I know it's from a man's POV, but it made an impact on me as a little girl and I still try to live this way. I think it's good advice for anyone. Be humble, be loving, be grateful.
It from a HUMAN point of view..universal. that's why it's great AMERICAN music.
Southern music is mostly about the basics of life and living
Have you heard the song of the same title by Bad Company? Theyre British but I think they captured southern life perfectly
Saw em at Knebworth. Astonishing, easy rapportwith crowd, and they rocked.A++.
Say it Jeff!
not really, skynrd has a lot of songs about weird stuff
I love seeing younger people come to appreciate the music I grew up. And I love appreciating the music young people are listen to today.
If more people would just follow the advice of Skynrd’s songs this world would be so much better and a lot less hatred
Amen!
Amen , bro
this is my fave Skynyrd song I love strumming the power chords
These lyrics are a masterpiece.
I make sure all 3 of my sons hear this song regularly so they think of me one day when they hear it. ❤️ This OG version, but the Shinedown one is great too!
That’s the first thing I thought of too! But, I’m a big (old only) Shinedown fan. NOTTTT what they’ve got going on these days with the 2nd pair of guitarists, etc….😜 (BUT, I respect other people’s choices and tastes too- just not for me!) I’m good with the original crew!😉
TAKE CARE ❣️
Said the same shinedowns version hits different
I did the same with mine and they are salt of the earth good young men!
What !! There's a remake of this great classic! Had no idea !
The best life was in the 70's I loved the music I loved my life it was the best Thank you God for blessing me with the simple life and memories of a wonderful childhood in the 60's & 70's 🙏
Southern rock at its finest
You got that right!
And unfortunately sometimes you hear something clearer when there is nobody around to say it anymore
that was me exactly....
"All I want for you my son, is to be satisfied." Best two meaning line in all of rock music.
Thank You for bringing people together LFR Family. You are what our Country needs.
This song played such a role in my life.
You are doing such an awesome job of letting everyone know that we as Americans are the same and have so much more in common than the media and our government want us to believe! Keep it going!!
Every time I hear this song I get Childs man. The message of this song is so POWERFUL and SIMPLE.
I discovered this band in 1998 while digging through my dad's 8 tracks. I was obsessed, and then so devastated to learn of the plane crash.
I was alive when the plane crashed and to this day I am still affected by it i was a huge skynyrd fan 💔 I am glad that a younger generation gets to appreciate this music
I was lucky enough to see them on August 27th 1977 Anaheim Stadium California. 5 weeks or so before the plane crash. Been a fan ever since.
My father found them playing in a bar in Atlanta before they were big. Ended up as sound tech for them. The story he tells still blow me away.

Old rock, old blues, old soul, old country....share it all with your kids.~:>
As a mother of two sons, this song is close to my heart. The cover by Shinedown is beautiful too.
Imo its better than the o.g. version. And I love l.s. but this song is sung so much more passionately by shinedown/brett.
One Jacksonville band paying tribute to THE Jacksonville band. Love both versions.
I enjoyed the Shinedown cover, but Ronnie’s version is a lullaby 😎
No. This version is the GOAT
Shinedown's cover is ok. I can also say the vocalist is technically better but, Ronnie's vocals fit this tune better. I still prefer this version hands down.
All that I want for you my son is to be satisfied these lyrics have always been so powerful for me I'm surprised that more people don't pick up on it
Your guardian did a good job.
Seriously you are a good man.
We all had that hair back in the day. 😎 As for Skynyrd, I still miss them. Their shows were nothing but pure fun. Thank God we have their music. Please do more. ❤️
This is probably one of my favorite songs ever. Ronnie Van Zant's voice ... incredible.
I have 4 sons who have grown up on this song and message. When they come together and sing it in the truck with me it makes this momma's heart happy ❤️
This is one of the greatest songs ever written
This is what I rocked my sons to sleep with and sang to them when they were babies at night. My personal lullaby for my sons, just perfect in every way. 🙏💕
