Old white guy here from the UK. I gotta say that having visited, NYC, Boston, Minnesota, Wisconsin and San Francisco, spending time in Alabama was my favourite. I loved it there, the people there, ALL the people, so warm, and me feel so welcome too. I was shown a good time for sure.
There's an island off of the south Atlantic coast somewhere, where the closest accent to the posh royal accents of 200 years ago is the most closely preserved on the planet, more so even than in the UK. It sounds nothing at all like the "highbrow?" British accents of today, but you can pick up on the Britishness of it a little bit, too. That said, the American Southern accent is part British and part African. It's so interesting, as modern British accents are so different from the older British accent inherent in the Southern Drawl.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was from Florida. Some of the original band members were killed in a plane crash in the 70’s. The band was named after a teacher Leonard Skinner who always gave them a hard time. AMAZING BAND!!!!
Lynyrd Skynyrd is part of the Southern Rock genre. The genre was made popular by Capricorn Records in Macon, GA in the 1970's. Capricorn was founded Otis Redding and Phil Walden. The 70's were a special time in the South, Jimmy Carter of Georgia was elected the first President of the US from the Deep South since the Civil War. You might want to check out the Allman Brothers, Wet Willie, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker. The Confederate battle flag was displayed to show pride as Southerners. Notice the lyrics, " In Birmingham the love the governor" and the background singers say "Boo, Boo, Boo" and the song continues, "We all did what we could do. The Governor at the time was a white supremacist, George Wallace. They were throwing shade at him...making it clear that they did not support him or the racism.
Exactly! Most people don't catch that...they were against racism and spoke out about it. I will be honest, I still don't understand why anyone today would ever display the Confederate flag, I'm against it. It basically represents racism and they were in the losing side of the civil war. I think some are just ignorant of the facts about history.
@Kim-dm4yb Does the Holy Bible represent racism? The KKK and other hate groups read from the Bible. They also display American Flags....is it racist? I think the Dred-Scott decision was written by the Supreme Court (US Supreme Court not the Confederate Supreme Court). My point is...its no more racist than anything else. If you cut holes in white bed sheets and go trick or treating as a ghost......that's not racist to trick or treat as a ghost. You put the same bed sheets on and ride around in the back of a pickup truck burning crosses and that's racist. Now....does the bedclothes make you racist or the actions behind it? I happen to feel its actions. My point is...if the flag stands for "the South" its not racist. If it stands for lynching and slavery to you....then its racist to you. It it what the user uses it for. I don't display one, but it doesn't bother me if others do.
It was FAME studio in Mussel Shoals, AL. where Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, Rolling Stones, and on and on and on were recorded may times.. There's a documentary about Mussels Shoals , the founder, all the bands that started out from there.. No one realized the band was 5 white teenage guys....
When i was 14 growing up in South Texas i had a good friend from school Floyd Harris. I spent the night at his house on Gunn St. The first time i heard the Ballad of Curtis lowe. 🎶 Oh Curt was a black man with white curly hair. And Floyd said " that's my daddy right there! I said where? Floyd said " in that song" He said " lets go to the back yard. I want you to meet my daddy." It was a day i would never forget. The day i met Curtis Lowe. This black beautiful man with white curly hair. I called him Mr. Lowe when i shook his hand and everybody just laughed for the longest time. Me too. When i realized that he was Mr Harris. I love that family.
Doesn't mean that the song itself wasn't racist. Even Governor George Wallace (the governor mentioned in this song) eventually recanted his previous racism, but that doesn't mean that he hadn't been racist back in the day.
Kid Rock is from Detroit and Skynyrd are from Jacksonville, Florida (most of them), the guy who wrote the Riff (Ed King) was a California hippie. The verses of the song all address different things but the title and the verse about The ‘swampers’ are a tribute to the ‘Fame’ recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and the great studio musicians that were there at the time. The part about the Governor is about George Wallace who was a segregationist governor who was shot and paralyzed while running for President. They were not at all supporters of Wallace - after his name they say “boo, boo, boo!” and they say “We all did what we could do”, but what they didn’t like was people from outside the South painting all Southerners in the same light and I’m all honesty they started flying the flag because in Europe they were being called ‘Yanks’ and that was too close to yankee, which as southern guys who grew up in a cycle of poverty and mistrusted the North - that was an insult to them so they fire the flag to differentiate themselves - “We’re not Yankees, we’re from the South”. As for the line about Neil Young, he wrote a song called Southern Man’ that essentially painted all white southerners as racist and he was Canadian so that pissed then off. They later toured together btw. They have a song called “Don’t Ask Me No Questions” which talks about getting grief for embracing black culture - “Do you love the brothers”, so these guys were definitely not racist, for some their music may at the time have been a little too black. Hope that offers some context, love watching such smart and genuine young men.
And at different times had black female back up singers which added a good sound to their Southern rock band. The group Alabama has an album with the same flag The flag represents southern pride of all races. I am proud to be a southerner where blacks and whites get along fine. Lynyrd Skynyrd was and still is a great band and good people. Like other music, though probably isn't for everyone everyone has different taste, but as far as southern rock goes, Lynyrd Skynyrd is at the top of my list. Also, there's a story behind Ronnie, Van Zandt, and the plane crash where he was killed. Maybe 1978 I'm not positive.
I am very old, and you guys lower my blood pressure from your craziness. Whenever I'm initially curious about a song reaction, one of my first thoughts is, "hey, wonder what the Cartiers think of this?"
GIMME THREE STEPS, good song, Lyrnyrd Skynyrd are from my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. They love all people! You should check out Blackfoot (train train) And 38 Special (teacher teacher) as well. RIP Ronnie Van Zant (original Lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd) Rock On!
I'm 52 years old about as white as they come. Grew up in the south I love the fact that you guys are listening to and appreciate some of the music I grew up on. Not that it matters, when I was 15 my first girl friend was a black lady, she was 22 met her in a comic book store where she worked she was beautiful and turned me on to music I'd never heard before and I'll always appreciate that. Like other people have stated, there's no racism in Skynyrd's music just southern pride. Also The Balled of Curtis Lowe is a must. Take care.👍 Edit: Muscle Shoals is in Alabama and there is a recording studio which is famous for turning out great music by a lot of different artists.
I'm so white my ex said I was clear lol but seriously I love that these guys are giving old school music some respect. I like so many different genres and decades of music and I love that there are PEOPLE out there that are trying to experience music. BTW FROM SOCAL
That is one hell of a fantasy. You met a 22 year old BLACK lady, in a comic book store, when you were 15, and she was your girlfriend. AND she turned you on to Lynyrd Skynyrd. LOL!!!!!!!!!!
I was a teacher back in the early 2000s and I'd let kids play different music on Fridays. No matter what a kid played there was always someone who hated it, with one exception. It didn't matter if kids were into metal, country, hip hop or electronic stuff.... NOBODY ever complained when I'd play Sweet Home Alabama. My classroom looked like what you all have going on there. Everyone bobbing their heads and having fun. It's just one of those songs that has a way of reaching across lines.
My 5th grade teacher(Mr. Gene Howl) would let the students bring their own records to class and play them for an hour every day. This was 1971/72ish, I was usually the one to bring from my collection. Anything from Sgt Pepper to Led Zeppelin to Osmonds to Steppenwolf to The Monkees. That wouldn't happen today.
I bet if you ever played For What It’s Worth by Buffalo Springfield you wouldn’t have received a single complaint either. It’s another great song that reaches across boundaries. American Pie by Don McLean is another fabulous song I bet nobody would have thrown a fit over.
Just think no computers to change the sound, no auto tune can you believe it? Amazing all 100% people singing and playing music! Nothing can replace that. Thank you young gentlemen for listening to all music and appreciating it the way you do! You make us old people proud! 🇺🇸🙏🏼☮️
The band is actually from Florida - Jacksonville area just a group of guys that started a garage band , in 1977 several members died in a plane crash including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant the band would continue with Ronnie's little brother taking over as lead singer - one of my favorite songs is Tuesday's Gone it will be a total different vibe from the ones y'all have heard, Also I love watching y'alls reaction to all the different bands and singers you make my day - if you have not checked out Stevie Ray Vaughn please make sure to
Ahhhh yeaaahhhh….Skynyrd was from Clay/Duval County in Northeast Florida. My Dad use to listen to them practice at the Hell House on Peters Creek in Green Cove Springs. My parents have some awesome pics of the band before the plane wreck in 1977.

56 here also and Originally from Florida. Steve and Cassie Gaines were brother and sister. The band needed a guitarist to replace Ed King when he left and His older sister Cassie Gaines had previously joined a gospel-oriented vocal trio called the Honkettes, who were hired by the Lynyrd Skynyrd band to sing backup and add more color to their stage show. When Cassie learned that the group was on the lookout for a guitarist to replace departed member Ed King, she spoke to guitarist Allen Collins and got her brother a chance to play with the group at a show, but only for one song. The guys in the band weren't expecting much from the singer's brother and even had things set up so his amplifier could be pulled if he couldn't keep up -- but Gaines could keep up with the best rocking guitar. In less than a month, Steve was a member of Skynyrd.. They were from Miami, Oklahoma. There isn't much about LS I don't know, they are one of my all-time favorite bands ever, I grew up listening to them and the Allman Brothers Band. My late husband (as of just 4 months ago) had he Original cover album from "Street Survivors", which is of course not the cover that you see today, Teresa Gaines asked that the cover be replaced since the album was released the same day of the plane crash on Oct 20, 1977 and a few got out before the change could take place and that is why there are 2 different "Street Survivors" album covers out there. Sorry for the rant, just wanted to try and help others that didn't know anything of this to understand a little about the band. Take care everyone, Peace out😊🎼🎵🎶🎤🎸🎹
Sweet Home Alabama was created in response to Southern Man by Neil Young. A comparison of the two songs might be interesting for you. Whether or not you do that, please keep making these reaction videos because they are golden.🤩
Yes, it is...but the point is Neil Young talking about "the southern man" like ALL of them were racist against blacks and that is just not true! Of course there is evil out there in every race but its really not as they portray it.
Neil Young who is mentioned in the first verse did a song called Southern man basically calling all Southerners racist so Lynard skynard released this as a come back saying they ain't all like that and flew the confederate flag as Southern pride.
You’d LOVe ALABAMA I live in northeast Alabama the mountainous part of the the state…its beautiful here today the bluest skies!!! Southern Alabama has nice beaches.
An American Classic! ❤ These guys are from Jacksonville, FL, and the name Lynyrd Skynyrd is a play on the name of a teacher they did not like in High School, and yes, they are down with the brown; they are not racist, just pro-south ❤️

You guys are too funny. You are right about Kansas. I grew up in rural Kansas, wheat country, in the 60s and we never needed to lock our houses or car doors.
Their music is so rich and full because they have Four Harmonizing guitars. You never know which one is playing a lead riff the others are adding their sound to the song. Muscle Shoals is a small place on the river, it has a recording studio there and those recording there influenced their music.
@Maria Fox they are from the south and down there it's still considered like "family heritage" and pride of being from the south. Some of them are racist, and some aren't, it just depends
@Maria Fox That's what happens when you judge the past by your modern biases. It was not really seen as a racist symbol nearly as much in those days, it was simply a southern heritage symbol which was not just white. It was about family, fishing, summer cookouts, family gatherings and old school values of family and friends. Stop being so judgmental of others.
@@numberoneballer2075 There is nothing racist about Lynyrd Skynyrd at all, they are a perfect example of reverse racism and bigotry. Foolish young people see a flag that was on an album 50 years ago that was never intended as a racist symbol by the band and judge them as racist because of the modern woke culture. People behaving in the exact manner they point fingers at others for supposedly doing. Blatant hypocrisy. If your going to call out racism and bigotry, stop behaving in racist and bigoted manners. Take the board out of your own eye, then you can point out the splinter in other people eyes.
That flag didn't stand for slavery, it stood for opposing one federal rule over individual state rights. Slavery was only one issue of the Civil War and less than 15% of the south owned slaves. The Kid Rock song is called All Summer Long and has this refrain in the background while he sings about young love. It's Bad-Ass.
I know they’d probably dig some Alabama! (the band) I would love to watch them react to “Dixieland Delight” or “Roll On” etc.. Alabama has some great hits from the 80’s that were more mainstream. I’ve always had friends like them & George S. who didn’t necessarily like country as a genre. You guys are so fun to watch. Such a great camaraderie amongst one another! 💙✌🏼
White Southern musicians are probably the least racist folks you'll ever meet. We know where our musical roots come from. The Skynyrd boys really didn't push for the flag to be used, that came from their, mostly Jewish, record company exec's. I get called regularly to come play in predominantly Black Churches. My regular Church gig is with a small independent Baptist Church with an integrated congregation. If you haven't listened to The Ballad of Curtis Lowe yet, you really should. It tells the story of a poor Black guitarist that had a major influence on Skynyrd's music. Peace!
How would you know former band members have said that they’ve used racial slurs all the time not that they were racist, but they weren’t perfect either
I'm glad to see y'all enjoying that music. 40 years after I first heard it. I think it's really awesome. Glad you're open-minded enough to take a listen. Check out their song called give me three steps

Mussle Shoals was a record label studio the first of its kind, known to cater to the southern rock sound. Thats why you need to explore Lynyrd Skynyrd further, and including the tragedy that happened . Y'all are killing it!
Just some information about this song when he mentions Neil Young Ronnie wrote this song in response to Neil Young’s songs Southern man and Alabama. Ronnie didn’t like the fact that Neil grouped all Southerns together like they are all the same .
That guy singing would kick all your asses he was hard core a true southern boy dude could bang he could fight he would do things you never thought of.
Skynyrd and many southerners flew ol' glory as southern pride symbol and rebellion against typical northerner liberals idea of it being about the support of slavery. Shallow minds think shallow thoughts. The lyrics explain their anti-racism views, they "boo hoo hoo" the racist governor Wallace of the 60s. "We did what we could do". Non-racists denounced him. Southern rock owes everything to the black music and musicians, that's why and how they learned to play music.
That’s not the Confederate flag, it’s the Virginia Military Unit Battle Flag, if square, and Tennessee, if rectangular. During the Civil War, many flags were created to represent the confederacy. The flag that we are the most familiar with actually wasn’t the official flag used by the Confederacy. The confederate flag had a blue box in the upper left corner, with a circle of white stars, like the old USA flag did, and Red and white stripes too, but just Two red Stripes, with one white stripe in the center. The issue was that it was easily confused with the Union flag, and the North and South often killed their own men, by accident. That’s why the confederate armies began carrying Battle Flags, instead of the flag of the Confederacy. The Battle Flags being different, for different Southern Units, also helped the Confederate Generals to “read” and command the battle field!
PS: And though two subsequent “Confederate Flags” were ill advisedly adopted by the Confederate Government, they were not accepted by their Military, because Flag 2 was primarily White, and it was correctly argued that it would be confused with a White Flag 🏳️ of Surrender, and Flag 3 was adopted only weeks before the South surrendered!
The last line at the end….MY MY DONUTS GOT THE ANSWER….was intended to be Montgomery’s got the answer but the singer who was stuck in the vocal booth, saw the band eating his box of donuts in the control room.
Ballard of Curtis Lowe...should be the next reaction! There actually from Jacksonville Fla...and there from the 70's...my lullaby was Gimmie Three Steps! My Daddy used to sing to me!

From west side of Jacksonville. One of the great bands from here.
True story. I was born 93 and my parents met and hooked up at a skynard concert and had me. I only exist because this band does. 😂
Hahahahah
I think that’s sweet, and so completely Merica.🤣💙
You might be a redneck… Jeff foxworthy could take inspiration here
Lynyrd Skynyrd is part of the Southern Rock genre.
I didn't know about that line concerning the current governor at the time- thank you! It just makes the song even better!👍
oh no kiddo it only represents racism if you have a very simplified view on history@@Kim-dm4yb
@Kim-dm4yb
Does the Holy Bible represent racism?
It was FAME studio in Mussel Shoals, AL.
where Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin,
Rolling Stones, and on and on and on were recorded may times..
There's a documentary about Mussels Shoals , the founder, all the bands that started out from there..

Ballad of Curtis Lowe should be the next Lynyrd Skynyrd reaction. This was dope.
Must react to this!!
My top 3 favorite Skynyrd songs!
yESSSSSSSSSSSSS
Ask them to react to Dolly Parton and they’ll pretend to be amazed for sure
Absolutely! I’m a huge fan and Curtis Lowe is my favorite.
If you want to know Skynyrd non racism listen to Curtis Loew. It will explain the bands feelings about all colors of people. It’s good.
Ballad of Curtis Loew is a great one. Very underrated.
Curtis Lowe!
Doesn't mean that the song itself wasn't racist. Even Governor George Wallace (the governor mentioned in this song) eventually recanted his previous racism, but that doesn't mean that he hadn't been racist back in the day.
@@bynchillyn LOL Awesome 😆
Watergate does not bother them because they voted for Wallace, not Nixon. "Where the skies are so blue, and the Governor's true."
Lol "do ya dig the brothers" is referring to the Allman Bros
And the name of the band was their high school gym teacher...so I've heard
Kid Rock did not sing on this song!
Holy Bejusus .. I’m happy to see you guys bobbin your heads to this it’s awesome music , you just feel it in your bones ❤️❤️
Guitarist Ricky Medlocke is Blackfoot Indian and founded the band Blackfoot also from Jacksonville. Lead vocalist Johnny Van Zants brother Donnie founded 38 Special band from Jacksonville.

The Swampers was a group of sessions musicians at Muscle Shoals studio
I was a teacher back in the early 2000s and I'd let kids play different music on Fridays. No matter what a kid played there was always someone who hated it, with one exception. It didn't matter if kids were into metal, country, hip hop or electronic stuff.... NOBODY ever complained when I'd play Sweet Home Alabama. My classroom looked like what you all have going on there. Everyone bobbing their heads and having fun. It's just one of those songs that has a way of reaching across lines.
I had a teacher in elementary school that did the same thing on Friday. What a time to be alive all I can say.
@@rickybutler2826 What a cool teacher...!
I would LOVE to have some of those pics if you could email them to me

“Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers” was the line that was hard to understand but look up the documentary on “The Swampers” and see how huge a role Muscle Shoals had on blues and rock music. It’s amazing!
70s classic Southern Rock! Everyone went to their concerts and rocked out together. Color wasn’t a thing with teenagers back then.

Yes! I hope they listen to Neil Young's song too.
Yes, it is...but the point is Neil Young talking about "the southern man" like ALL of them were racist against blacks and that is just not true! Of course there is evil out there in every race but its really not as they portray it.
Truth
Neil Young was a Canadian. IMO, both bands profitted from their "spat", lol. 🙄
Neil Young who is mentioned in the first verse did a song called Southern man basically calling all Southerners racist so Lynard skynard released this as a come back saying they ain't all like that and flew the confederate flag as Southern pride.
Black folks and Southern folks (black and white) have a whole lot in common as far as how we live our lives. Way more in common than differences.
Who doesn't love Sweet Home Alabama... I live in Sydney Australia and never been to Alabama but everytime I hear that song I so want to go😂
You’d LOVe ALABAMA I live in northeast Alabama the mountainous part of the the state…its beautiful here today the bluest skies!!! Southern Alabama has nice beaches.
If you are going to get into Southern rock, you have to do the Allman Brothers. Whipping Post.

"Muscle Shoals" was a reference to a famous music studio where top musicians recorded hits with a Southern sound. Visitors to the studio included the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, Paul Simon, Box Scaggs, Willie Nelson, and more.
It started before that with original blues , the swampers were the locals who backed up the blues singers. It was in Louisiana if I remember
I was a over the road truck driver, ill never forget, I was coming back home from new york, hadn't heard this song in awhile, as I was crossing the Alabama state line this so literally came on, I'll never forget that, it was perfect timing

It’s a jam no matter the color or the nation.
Growing up in the south, when this song or "flirting with disaster" came on the radio.....speed limits were broken!
Peace!
the "least" racist? What an absurd claim

"Ol' Glory" is the Unites States flag. SMFH
"Southern rock owes everything to the black music and musicians..." No, it doesn't.
This is some of the best southern rock at its finest.
That flag is not about hate it's southern pride.
Ballard of Curtis Lowe...should be the next reaction! There actually from Jacksonville Fla...and there from the 70's...my lullaby was Gimmie Three Steps! My Daddy used to sing to me!
One of the greatest songs ever
Crazy thing is Lynyrd Skynyrd is from Jacksonville Florida and Kid Rock is from Detroit.
56 yr old black lady from uk here. Danced to this song when i was kid. I only learnt about that flag 20yrs ago. Not gonna stop dancing because of history. This track is banging! As long as music contines to unite us, there is hope for humanity. Cartier family keep your open minds and enjoy rocking out😊
As someone else pointed out, many black people in Alabama are proud of that flag.
What you've been told it means, doesn't apply.
You should check out the live version of this from the stadium show in Oakland in 1977. They put on such a dynamic live show.
The Ballad of Curtis Loew - Do It
As others have suggested, Curtis Lowe by them should be your next one. It’s a story and a little low key from LS’s other jams!!! Love y’all!! ✌🏼❤️
Whether you react on camera or not, you should watch the documentary "Muscles Shoals," which is about the studio(s) in northern Alabama where a ton of the best music of the 20th century was made. People such as Aretha Franklin recorded there. It was special.
Man I REALLY appreciate you guys (especially as young black guys) paying homage to GOOD music, no matter the color of the artists. I also watched your Rolling Stones Paint it Black video and it's good to see the appreciation of quality music. Keep it going!
Well put my man, couldent said it better😎
It was nice seeing a bunch of young men from today reacting to this song from my era! It was fresh and exciting! Thank you for letting me sit in with you!
