Lynyrd Skynyrd was an awesome band. Unfortunately the majority of the band members a long with the lead singer Ronnie, died in a plane crash. But their music will live on forever.
Along with Ronnie, guitarist Steve Gaines was lost in the crash. The rest of the band despite their injuries were recording and touring again by 1980, most of them together in Rossington Collins Band. Also killed were Cassie Gaines (background vocals), Dean Kilpatrick (road manager) and their pilot and co-pilot.
The plane crash happened in the late 70's. I always wonder just how huge they would've been if it hadn't occurred. Tons of talent disappeared from the earth that day.
the dude in the green shirt is how MOST people react to this classic southern rock song. Sadly, the lead singer Ronnie and several others died in a totally preventable plane crash in 1977. Their band name came from a high school teacher's name they modified, who didn't like '"longhairs", I believe. You guys rock with your reactions, fun to watch ! Check out their LIVE performance in Oakland Coliseum, also in 1977
@A Y i think for me this freebird solo is better than Stairway to heaven, comfortably numb, hotel california etc this solo is fucking difficult to learn and to play
The Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash was 46 years ago today:( What a great group- The solo was by Allen Collins, I think. And, for me the song was about breaking up with someone and moving on to the next flight-in-life... it was about not being tied down, but about always finding new adventures. The band was named after Leonard Skinner- the school's gym coach- in Jacksonville, FL. Thanks for sharing a great reaction!
This is classic Southern rock. Not a country, but a southern rock. It was heavily influenced by blues music, initially a black artist's music. It is beautiful and has a lot of souls. It speaks to people. This IS NOT a cultural appropriation. Not at all. This is a cultural acceptance and cultural respect. I really like seeing you guys enjoying it. It speaks to us. The lyrics are beautiful and speak on many levels. Music unites us and makes us brothers and sisters. I love what you guys are doing. Huge respect. By the way, the band usually finishes their set with this song. I've been to their concert and seen people cry during this song. The band would go for 10-15 minutes at the end with their jam sessions, which would be absolutely beautiful. And please look up what happened to the band on October 20, 1977 and what band did after. Please look up.
There's not much difference between Southern Rock and Modern Country. Listen to Travis Tritt sometime. If Skynyrd were to get there start today, they would be played on country stations. Same for the Eagles.
The band is named after their gym teacher. They adjusted the spelling with the letter Y. A plane crash in 1977 killed Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and others. Van Zants brother took his brother's place as singer in tribute to the music. Still thriving , Free Bird is a Southern Rock history making song. Known as the Southern National Anthem, all people come together to jam to this song. Out of Jacksonville Florida, these guys have made music history with so many hits. Free Bird is about a man's need to be free . Being a free spirit to cross all borders of the world, doing his life. He is not promising marriage . He is a wondering spirit enjoying his journey. He has given the warning not to fall in love with him. He is not going to be there long. He invites the moments to share if you can handle it. You should watch live in 1975 version. See the extreme talent. The guys in high school use to play hooky from school to go to a black blues player named Curtis Lowe. They learned so much from him singing and playing and following his steps that would become part of thier style in this Southern Rock band. A song is dedicated to Curtis Lowe, take a listen. People in the south have a saying about this band. If you have a problem or question on life, look to a Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Simple man, and others all of solid hardcore life . 3 guitars , rhythm, slide, Allen Collins on lead and 1 bass really give a solid full flow of talent. As Allen starts to hit the high, fast riffs, the multi-talented guitarist Steve Gaines joined in, harmonizing the riffs. With two guitarists building the same lead lines, the sound starts blasting exponentially. Finally, bassist Leon Wilkerson joins that building jam. He starts climbing the neck of the bass like the Himalayas, joining the guitarists at the peak. All four of the instrumentalists scale up and down, hammering on and pulling off and shaking the stadium. Finally, the song reaches its peak with all guitarists strumming with all their might. Then, the song comes to an end. Here is the url of the band in glory. Enjoy...ua-cam.com/video/QxIWDmmqZzY/v-deo.html
Thank you for sharing the roots/bio of Lynard Skynard to these young bucks👍. One of the greatest guitar solos in rock history. Don’t interrupt it. Give respect where respect is due. This song is a masterpiece, goes from slow to fast.
@@tompierson9902 this is one of my all time favourite songs, but I'm not sure if it's a solo per se - there are 2 guitars, a bass, keyboard and drummer all making this song so amazingly epic. Regardless, solo or not, it's one of the greatest pieces of music ever performed.
My favourite UA-cam genre is black men and women discovering Classic Rock and appreciating it as much as I (an old white dude) do. It warms my soul. Thanks for sharing your reaction :)
@@nickbarber3315 Country and Blues are two sides of the same coin my friend - Country being white American folk influenced by black music/musicians, Blues being black American folk influenced by European music conventions. Just look at the most iconic instrument for Country, the banjo - invented by African Americans and the most iconic instruments in Blues are the guitar and Harmonica - both invented in Europe. It's part of what make both genres great (pop bastardisation aside) as they're the result of three continents worth of musical tradition.
The music is considered southern rock. Ronnie Van Zant sings the lead in all the songs until his death in 1977. The band continued years later with his younger brother Johnny Van Zant , but didnt have the same drive or energy. On a side note, songs you might like from this band; Give me 3 steps, Simple man, Tuesdays gone, Saturday night special and Sweet home Alabama.
Yes, this comment. The only thing I wanna add is the meaning of the lyrics, it's about dying and becoming a "free bird". I also think that the guitar solo represents taking flight and passing on. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my interpretation.
I actually think Johnny Van Want did a great job. Might not have had the same drive necessarily, but he had just as much energy on stage. I like Call Me the Breeze too.
I’ll never stop smiling at watching the younger generations experience Free Bird for the first time. Their reactions were all of ours from the very first time they played it. The best part of it is, when the guitar solo plays, drive your car to the absolute peak! That’s the best experience! 😊
Thank you for reacting to Lynyrd Skynyrd. The pinnacle of Southern Rock. Three amazing guitarists, the solo was performed by my all time favorite guitarist, the late Allen Collins, who wrote the music to this classic song when he was 18 years young.
I played some Zep at my mum's funeral a couple of months ago! It was mellow, though (Thank You). She'd be super mad if I went further than that, lol. ❤
Best guitar solo of all time! I remember the day we heard about the plane crash so clearly. I was on the school bus going home, and when we heard the news on the radio, everyone was silent.
I was 8 or 9 when I was on a plane where the band was in first class. The teenaged girl sitting next to me in coach was losing her mind! The flight attendant let me go up and get autographs ❤️. I had no idea who they were.

The other 2 guys finally realized the brilliance of this song, but the guy on the far right got it from the get go! He got it from the beginning. Great reaction!
@CG you’re just saying you’re not as open minded as them. You’re probably referring to hip hop/rap, which is an amazing genre if you bother to actually listen
You cannot stop the solo at the end of Freebird!!!!! When you saw them live, that solo was a religious experience! I have seen seats ripped out of the floor during this songs solo. Respect the vibe!
It's hard to believe someone when they say how much they love the guitar solo when they're constantly talking over it instead of listening to it. Brandon feels the rock and metal music a lot more than the rest of them. Right on Brandon 💯💯
Let me say this as nice as I can... *NEVER* pause Freebird! You guys are awesome and I'm going to watch more, but take that from someone from Gen-X. It's just sacrilege. So, put this back on and listen to it all the way through.

Lynyrd Skynyrds music is know as “Southern Rock”. I recommend you watch the live version of Free Bird & have your minds blown! Also, the Ballad of CurtisLowe is one you definitely need to check out.
It's become obvious that The Ballad of Curtis Loew is just code for overly sensitive fans' protest against a charge that nobody has ever honestly made against the band. This is what virtue signaling looks like.
I've so enjoyed your musical discovery journey, young men. It's like discovering my music all over again! Thanks for the ride and be sure to check out the live version in Oakland..
He's basically saying being together wouldn't work. He's traveling partying singing. Wild. It would ruin her life & he would be there reluctantly. So nobody would win. He wasn't ready to settle down.....
I was in my 20s, just growing up and was introduced to this band. It was great stuff to grow up to in the early 70s! No regrets being almost 70 years old- Lucky me.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is all about the build up. The music tells the story. I’m sooo glad y’all liked it-this is what classic rock is about. And why is oldsters are reluctant to let go. 😅
how could you live a lifetime without hearing a Beatles song!? they're incredible. pioneers of music. my favorites are Back in the USSR, Don't Bother Me, Let it Be, Get Back, Help!, Come Together, and Maxwell's Silver Hammer
You MUST react to Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd. You won't be disappointed. :-) Also, it's very possible he IS saying..I wanna be free to mess around" BUT, at least he is upfront and honest about it.
60 year old white guy here, you guys made my day. Appreciating music from my era like this. This song was the song of my youth. These guys were heroes and were fated to be remembered by this song forever. Good to see you all discovering them. Tune to Tuesday’s Gone next. My second favorite song of theirs with the same caliber. God bless
I was thinking the exact same thing! I was so excited waiting for you to hear the jammin. You did not disappoint. It was really special to see you enjoy the music of my teens! Y’all are so much fun.
THIS is why the rock bands of the 70's were the BEST. There were concerts held every weekend. Some were all day, with 3-4 bands. I really miss those days, it was amazing!!!
@@mitchellgross2568 yeah it’s gotten to the point where people don’t even know what bluegrass is. we need to teach music history in school and then maybe we’ll stop hearing all this uninspired trap and pop music that’s been in the mainstream for the last 10 years
That is an awesome song I’ve actually heard it at funerals!! Uplifting knowing my Dad was going to heaven and to think of him finally cancer free! Love ya’ll!!!
They're jamming but never lose the melody. Not just shredding. The first part of the song is a set-up for the guitar soaring like a freebird, notice in the first part how they give guitar hints about what's about to come...riffs telling you of a bird about to be let loose. Skynyrd learned a lot about arrangement and phrasing and musical lyricality from blues artists in Jacksonville
The guy in the green shirt has a beautiful vibe! I love how open minded and open hearted you are in your reactions! I watch your videos because of you. You have a beautiful soul!
"Southern Rock" is what we called that genre. That was one of the biggest tunes of the day. Suggest Edgar Winter. And if you really want to know the Beatles, listen to the whole Sgt. Pepper's or the whole White Album.
The Lyrics set up the story so we can "fly away". For me, that's what the guitar solo is all about. Remember that the final lyric is "Free bird fly!" Woah, does Alan Collins make it fly! Running feet, flapping wings, bobbing head the "Free bird" rises and soars off toward places he's got to see. You guys should check out a live performance of "Free Bird". There are several, but my favorite was also Ronnie Van Zant's final performance: Oakland Coliseum, 1977...
A huge reason their sound was so tight was they rehearsed for years before they got their break in a little shack out in the sticks outside of Jacksonville. Sweat, passionate about their craft and broke AF. They grinded their way to stardom.
The Beatles. Kicked the doors wide open for all other British artists in America. Most prolific band ever. Can't put them in any genre. Total progression throughout their time together.
People who say they don't like the Beatles have only heard a couple similar songs max. They have SOOOO many and a HUGE variety. There is something for pretty much everyone
That good Beatles music , they've got so much variety. I was just a little girl when they started and that was long ago, but they're still favorites. I don't like all the songs but there are so many.
@boyercollection I'm not sure. I was young and his death was sudden. I was really emotional. My sisters told me they felt comfort while it played. They know he would have smiled at it.
@@kevinnelson9588 i appreciate your sharing. though it was years ago.....sorry for your lost. i lost my dad when I was about 11-12. I was blessed to be raised by my uncle and aunt. long story, but life was good.
When I was 14-ish, my dad always "vetted" who I could go see at a concert. He didn't want me to be exposed any bad influences. After listening to Free Bird and the OUTLAW's Green Grass and High Tides, he said that no one who played a guitar that long and that hard could be on drugs or drunk. He let me go to both.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I live outside of Nashville and they played municipal auditorium and the smoke was so thick you had to really look to see and it wasn’t from cigarettes. Those were the days but I guess we all had to grow up sometime.
When a local band is doing a show, in a bar or club, when the audience shouts out for them to play Freebird it isn't just a request, it's a challenge. You really owe it to yourselves to watch a live version of this song, it's mind-blowing. Their performance in Oakland is easy to find and a great performance, but I recommend you watch the one in Knebworth, England in 1976. They were one of the opening bands for The Rolling Stones at a big music festival. The stage was configured for the stars of the show, The Rolling Stones, with a walkway jutting out from the stage made to imitate the tongue on the Stones logo. Mick Jagger had very specific instructions that no one else was allowed to walk out on that "tongue". When Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage they absolutely owned that massive crowd. Then about halfway through Freebird they walked all the way out that tongue and the crowd loved it. The Stones took the stage way behind schedule and put on a lackluster show, totally overshadowed by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The video for that show on UA-cam is titled "Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird Live August 21st, 1976"
Mr Video has an outside live concert he shows on a big screen.I don't know where it's taken but the jamming guitars are just awesome to see. And Mr Video is a funny guy, watching his reaction is hilarious. I think you would like it.
@@maryannswanson3832 I have subscribed to Mr Video's channel since he had just a few thousand subs, he has done really well. Are you talking about a reaction he did to Lynyrd Skynyrd?
Agree about Knebworth. One of the best blu-rays I own. I saw the band on the Smokestack Lightning tour. Was already a fan but was further blown away by Billy Powell on piano. Sadly we don't get a very good look at him in action on the Knebworth disc though.
I loved watching yall listen to Freebird for the first time. My husband was a huge Skynyrd fan and I totally got hooked when I met him! He passed away June 26, 2022 and I had this played at his funeral. If you really listen to the words knowing he fought a 15+ year battle with cancer...he is now free, free from pain and the struggle of always fighting.
Yes, guy in the middle, you got it - the guitar is the star of the song. Simple, nice lyrics and then KICK ASS guitars! You guys really need to see the live version so you can watch them in action. In my opinion, "Free Bird" is the greatest American rock-n-roll song of all time and Lynryd Skynrd is the top guitar group of all time (alongside the Eagles). So, yes, check this one out live and then they also do their "Sweet Home Alabama" which is a fun song from the same concert 1977. Sadly, they lost three band members (and three crew) including Ronnie Van Zandt, the lead singer, in a terrible plane crash just months after this concert.
I saw them in 1976! They rocked the Angel stadium ! Sadly in October 1977 their plan crashed 💔 Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie passed away but their legacy lives on 🤟🎶
Great video, watching you guys is like re-living the first time. 3 Guitars rotating with each other for the lead. They called it the Guitar-Army. Watch their video of playing this in Oakland, on the Rolling Stones stage in 1976 was EPIC. In 1977, EVERY 20-something girl in Northern California was there, still awesome but more of a show. For Free Bird, love is not the point. Because when you've got the gift of wings, you gotta fly. Don't know about coming back, but you do know you just can't stay. Makes you feel like you could run like Eric Dickerson, Adrian Peterson, Barry Sanders, ..... name the Hero. The radio stations ran this song into the ground back in the '70's. But like a Phoenix, it just keeps jumping back up and ROARING on! The first part always makes me feel like it's the start of something righteous or royal. Then it morphs into this almighty football game, on a field about 10 miles long, with a gauntlet of defenders on both sides. As you run the ball with your blockers, its like a human avalanche, overwhelming defenders coming in from both sides. Relentless power that keeps building up speed and momentum. Jumping, leaping, brawling, smashing in, and busting out. As you breathe faster and deeper, your chest swells up like 20,000 rpm turbo-supercharger, shifting gears through a 30 speed transmission. Gets so intense you think your heart is going to burst, but instead of getting tired, you just keep getting defiantly stronger .. A ton of gold out there, but if you like these guitars and vocals, I also recommend: The Who, "Love, Reign O'er me." Also from LS: Give me three steps; Call me the breeze; Saturday Night Special; and on...
OMG...watching you guy made me CRY. I was reliving my youth vicariously through you. Skynard was jamming when I was in high school and their plane crash was my first year of college. I am an original classic rocker and a bar band drummer. I observe that some rappers focus on the lyrics and the deep meaning of the words. For years hip hop and new school R&B have sampled grooves and live drummers (often changed to digital keyboard drums), and created some amazing lyrics. But the original classic rock was all about the synergy of the live musicians. No sampling, completely organic musicianship. Keep up the good work, even to an old 65yr old artist, you guys are entertaining.

Their band name came from a high school teacher's name they modified, who didn't like '"longhairs", I believe. You guys rock with your reactions, fun to watch ! Thanks for sharing a great reaction!
when i was born in 98 the earliest memory is listening to this song.

You can’t play that lead messed up. You can’t.
And that was the day Jagger learned not to try giving orders to a bunch of American Good 'Ol Boys. ESPECIALLY not in the summer of 1976.

So, yes, check this one out live and then they also do their "Sweet Home Alabama" which is a fun song from the same concert 1977. Sadly, they lost three band members (and three crew) including Ronnie Van Zandt, the lead singer, in a terrible plane crash just months after this concert.

A ton of gold out there, but if you like these guitars and vocals, I also recommend: The Who, "Love, Reign O'er me."
Also from LS:

that’s so sad 😞
Sorry for the loss, some stay forever with us.
Should’ve got ketchup

Mustered or murdered? I'm sorry either way.
Dude in the green in awesome and keeps an opened mind. I like you all but my boy in the green was definitely feeling it. I have nothing but respect for that. Well, dude in the black did also. Well done lads.
This band featured 3 lead guitars!!! This is an example of Southern Rock. A shame that Ronnie passed away. I'm so glad that members of the younger generation are appreciating the music that my generation grew up on.
LS had 3 lead guitarists, and one of the staples of Southern Rock bands was harmonizing lead guitars. Allman Brothers invented that sound and LS perfected it.
Damn! Loved watching your reactions! Dude on the right, gets it! This is Southern Rock with a tri-guitar attack. This is the music that led to people like Kid Rock. It really is a timeless song too.
The solo literally gives me chills all these years later. I’m 70.
I love hip-hop, rock, blues. All kinds of music. But Lynard Skynard is one of my most fave of all bands of all time. Besides Tom Macdonald!! Freebird is a definite fave. Yall need to do Simple Man!! 💜
Yes simple man next
besides tom macdonald is a wild statement
My all time #1 favorite band. And you guys rocked it like the 70's. Like us "old timers" did back in the day. Hey fella's, your one of us now 🙂
OMG I love you guys. This was truly wonderful watching you young people discover what it was like when music was live and unfiltered. You had to have real talent back in the day. No auto tune or special effects. It was a true stoner time.
Yall are so funny. I had no idea yall reacted to this song before today. I didn’t appreciate this song UNTIL I played it on expert on guitar hero. Holy crap…. it’s painful.
Rule number 1, Dude. Never pause a guitar solo! Keep rockin’!
This has always felt like a true Southern Rock anthem to me. It's as impressive as Bohemian Rhapsody or Stairway to Heaven. All incredible in their own ways. Seriously, we are blessed with a crazy amount of good tunes to listen to. 🤘
The brother on the left has become my favorite. He’s quiet and full of information. When he reacts it worthy of listening.
The look he gave when they kept pausing it 🤣
I think he's sleeping in the beginning
Agree, thoughtful and intuitive
Man, I'm happy for y'all. Knowing what was coming and watching them slow play you was amazing. It's easy to forget the first time you heard this song, so watching y'all listen and get blown away was very satisfying
"The guitar has its own verse" is a damn good way to put it.
Free bird and Dust in the Wind are epic songs of our lives. It’s a pleasure watching you discover music that gets inside your souls from the older generation.
So glad I found you guys! A real pleasure…
I saw Skynerd live 5 times!
The Ballad of Curtis Loew is one of my favorite Skynard songs. Hope you check out more of their music. Would love to see you react to Gimme Three Steps, Give Me Back My Bullets and Simple Man. I was 17 when I read about the tragic plane crash that killed many band members. Their legend lives forever.
That's Allen Collins on lead Guitar and Gary Rossington on Rhythm and slide guitars. Guitar World named this the #8 Guitar solo of all time; but for me, it's number one.
Without the start you wouldn't have got hyped for the end. Perfect musical genius.
Ronnie was a song writing genius!
Y’all have to see the Netflix “If I leave here tomorrow” movie of Lynyrd Skynrd then you will go to another level with this group. ❤❤❤ them
Gotta love seeing homeboys get their face melted for the first time by a legendary riff like this. 😎👍❤️
Yeah they weren't ready for that solo.
You can’t break during the guitar solo!! It’s amazing!!!
One of the best Southern Rock bands to come out of Florida (imo). The solo on the song-which was played by Allen Collins and Gary Rossington-comes it at Number 3 on Guitar World’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time. Just a little trivia :) Thank you for doing this one guys!!
I grew up in the 70s. Us boomers listened to ALL genres. I loved the Spinner, Stevie Wonder, Carole King, Todd Rundgren, Led Zeppelin, Linda ronstadt, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jimi Hendrix, Gordon Lightfoot, Jackson Five, Earth Wind and Fire, Alice Cooper, Marshall Tucker.
And you could hear it all on one radio station. R&B, funk, rock, heavy metal, singer songwriter, country, country rock, and pop. . And my mom exposed me to Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Louis Armstrong. We heard all genres. And got to appreciate them all. Just a wide array of music. I’ve left out so many. Bob Marley, The Doors, Hall & Oats
A good way to learn to appreciate all kinds of music.
Like that twice
Music from the 70s was the best. My taste in music is eclectic because of all the different genres we listened to in that decade.
This is what get when the lead guitarist was the co-writer.
@@timetraveler5246 absolutely. Glad I got to be exposed to so many different types of music. To this day the music I like is a mix of genres. Country rock. Rock blues. R and B and funk…
Their song "Simple man"
Will bring a tear to you!
Guaranteed
Awesome guys! Ronnie Van Zant profected Southern Rock. I saw them on TV when I was 12 years old. I will be 60 soon and this is still my all time favorite band. I loved Ronnie the minuet I saw him and I will love him when I take my last breath. Ronnie's voice just touches my soul. Welcome to Skynyrd Nation!!!❤❤
