Welcome to my review of the new Fender Mustang GTX100 guitar amplifier. The Fender Mustang GTX is the latest modeling amplifier from Fender. In this video, I show you how it can sound by dialing in your own custom patches. These digital modeling amplifiers offer over 100 different sounds from amplifiers, cabinets, effects pedals, and more.
The Mustang GTX 100 is a 100-watt digital modeling amplifier that is very loud! You can also connect the amplifier to headphones for low-volume practice. The looper is one of my favorite things about this amplifier.

Exactly the review I was waiting for. In general, the other reviews are based on the factory presets and make their jugements, opinions, recommendations on just that. Thant you for taking the time on putting the amp to its pace and show what it is capable to do. Very enjoyable video.

Hello from Iowa, in the States.
So I bought a Mustang GT100 just before the GTXs were introduced. Fortunately I got it for a reduced price even after the price reduction, but I have struggled a bit with getting the most out of the amp. Even after the two software upgrades I personally could not get too much that I liked out of the amp except for the Uber, which sounds great.
So today I came across this video and downloaded the patches you made.
Well all I can say is thank you so much for uploading them. They are the best I have tried so far and four the kind of sound I like they make the amp come alive. Im glad that people like you are out there to help people like me. Thank you so very much.

Such a great demo, thanks Shane. Two weeks ago I thought about buying a desktop amp for noodling in front of the TV on an evening. In that moment I started reviewing the usual troop of offenders such as the Katana Air, Yamaha THR & even a Nux Mighty Space. To be honest none of them inspired me enough to part with the cash & so I widened my search, Boss Katana 100 might do the trick. It was at that point the algorithms at google got to work & I came across the Fender Mustang. Tonight you sealed it for me, the Fender will be mine. Once again, thank you Shane.

The Clapton Tremolux you created is number one on my Mustang III v2, and I hardly stray from it. While these amps are loaded with possibilities, sometimes it’s more about getting a sound you like and sticking with it.

    • @roaddog7542
      @roaddog7542 4 роки тому +4

Exactly! Option paralysis is something amps like these can deliver. A solid player has two or three tones they like and work those all night instead of constantly messing around with settings.

The tone and versatility of this Fender GTX 100 is amazing.
It does take a bit fiddling of all the settings to get what you want. But when you get there you will put away your tube amps.
As a certified Mustang expert I can tell you previously that with all other models the first thing I did was swap out the speaker to turn them into great amps. That was my only previous complaint - they put speakers in that are a compromise to play regular music / line-in accompaniment, and cost.
However... with the GTX 100 I can say the improved Celestion speaker they put in these are as good as it gets.
I tried other speakers, while they sounded DIFFERENT, I won't say BETTER. I ended up putting the original back on. So save your money don't even bother. That being said, when I first turned it on I thought it sounded like an AM radio... it definitely needed to be broken in. Superbly smooth & sweet when it was. And most definitely use an amp stand to get it off the floor and pointing at you.
I actually also bought the new Katana Artist MK2.
The Katana amp does appear better built and more solid, also with an amazing new speaker.
That being said, I always went back to the GTX for more fun and better vintage tones. The Katana only has 4 amp amp types. And each one is an extension of the previous. Add max gain to the "clean" and that is where the next "crunch" starts. So its basically 1 amp type, that you can extensively modify with the App.
So ended up returning the Katana, and kept the GTX, if that says anything.
The GTX 100 does absolute great vintage tones of old Fender & British amps.
There are several modern tones also, I just never worked with them.

I remember asking on stream when you would get to review this, and here it is. Sounds great from every video I've heard it in so far. Sounds like Fender really paid attention to your Mustang GT review from a couple of years ago!!!! It seems they took every criticism of that amp and improved the GTX line. It’s refreshing to see a company as big as Fender take a flawed product and fix some of the major issues. I think the price of these amps are also a great improvement!! Hopefully we can see a comparison of the GTX and the Tone Master Twin. I still want the Twin, however I could see myself buying a GTX. Great review and once again the demos are awesome 🔥🔥🔥🔥!!!! • @FrankHarv
      @FrankHarv 4 роки тому +5

@@mikecorey8370 - Maybe you never got this data - Fender was FORCED to drop the Mustang V2 as the software platform depended on Microsoft Silverlight (used to be a component of Windows), and Microsoft suddenly totally dropped all support for Silverlight. It was forced stagnant at 32 bit "adrift" / never to be updated, MS Silverlight. Fender obviously put a lot into the tones etc for "that platform". They were forced to do the GT thing, from absolute scratch.

I've got the Mustang 3 v2 and haven't had any issues with it other than I thought it sounded a little brittle and harsh on the high end, but after working the speaker for a few gigs it seemed to mellow out and get that "warmer" sound. I don't find that not getting updates anymore from Fender Fuse is an issue as I never used it anyway. But I'd like to know what were the changes from the v2 to the GT that made it worse? Or do you find the v2 to be just as lacking in your opinion?

Great demo and review (as usual). I still use my Mustang III v.2 ALL the time, love it. I tried the GT (ugh) when it was released... but this GTX sounds promising. Definitely looking forward to trying one out soon.
That being said, with all the cool features here, I simply can't believe that there's no MIDI In or Out/Thru to be able to control your own external stereo effects' stomps internal presets-especially after Fender has gone to the trouble of adding a Stereo FX loop. It would be SO cool to, say, place a BOSS DD-500 in the loop... switch your GTX preset... and then use MIDI commands in order to have the DD-500 instantly switch to the specific delay you'd picked out for that GTX sound. But no MIDI Out control onboard? Really?
Anyway, I find that omission to be most disappointing, especially when MIDI ports are found on much less expensive stuff than this cool new amp. My 2¢ and YMMV.

    Hi Shane,
I am a big fan of your reviews and your advice would be very helpful for me to choose my next amp, mainly for home use. I hesitate between an old V2 and this GTX. When I watched your previous comparison between the old III v2 and the GT 100, I felt the v2 was so much full, natural and organic, which I love, and I find this new GTX has less of this tone, feels kind of digital / plastical precision. Am I wrong ? Is it just a matter of different amp settings ?

would be interested in some presets if you feel like it Shane, thanks for the review, i have had one of these for about 2 weeks, and honestly, i am a big fan. its a great amp, (at least in the context of what it is). btw, for some counter feed back, i am not a fan of shootouts - no matter how balanced you will be, the internet will turn it in to "amp A is godly and amp B is the worst trash ever"; and i think that's counter productive in terms of company's willingness to provide choice in products - not your fault just the internet... (and this is one mans opinion and i appreciate that people tend to not feel the same way as me).

Glastonbury stuff over the weekend. I actually still had a load of stuff recorded from last year-especially the excellent Cure concert on the Sunday night-that I finally got to enjoy over the last few days. I actually saw them when they headlined for the first time 34 years ago in 1986. that was the last time that I went to Glastonbury-it was already getting much too big by then and was losing some of that special magic that had been there when we went in 1979-and that remained for a while in the early 80's.
That first time that we went in your mini from Birmingham was certainly very special and I have a lot of fond memories of that. Do you remember that we first went to see John in Newport for a night, where he was doing his graphics course, before going on to Glastonbury on the Thursday. That first Glasto went from Thursday to Saturday. I have read that there were just 12,000 there- and entry was about £8 !!!! 1979 was the Year of the Child and that festival was themed around that partially.
I remember we camped in a flat field immediately to the side of the stage-we arrived Thursday lunchtimeish. I remember there being a massive and colourful children's play area with lots of rides etc. I can remember some of the acts. I remember John Martyn, The Pop Group, Only Ones, Keith Christmas. The last on one night was Tim Blake-keyboardist from Gong-who put on a great laser show. I can't remember Hawkwind but I remember in the same field where we were camping Nik Turner's Sphynx setting up a small alternative stage and playing most of the night that kept us awake for much of it!! I remember that the headliners on the Saturday was a kind of all-star band featuring Peter Gabriel, Alex Harvey, Phil Collins (then just a drummer), Nona Hendryx from Labelle.
the whole shabang was in just a few fields. I can remember Michael Eavis driving round on his tractor and trailer delivering milk to people with his 2 little girls sitting on the back.
We left Sunday morning and went to Stonehenge. I had forgotten, until you mentioned it, that we spent time that day exploring a lot of the ancient sites on the Plain and looking for ley lines. that was great fun. Then, of course, we arrived at the Stonehenge Festival, and stayed there, Sunday night. There was a magical atmosphere there too. We saw the great Here And Now play that night.
    Great memories.
Hope to see you soon. I miss being able to go into London myself. I think that we may have to be patient for a bit longer. Keep in touch.

      From a guy who had a Katana 100 & a GT100 but only kept one, here's my $.02:
Mustang GT100: tons of amp presets, tons of effects, tuner included, phone app paired to the amp via BT is nice to have. The '65 Twin & Bassman patches are worth the price of admission. And that clean tone! The amp is really loud. The XLR outs to the console are nice to have. You can go direct to the DAW for silent recording. Headphones also for silent practice. Option paralysis at times. Kinda always feels like a computer model of ones and zeroes for some reason. The weight of that amp was a nice change.
Katana 100: No option paralysis. It's plug and play. Really easy to dial in a great tone. If need be there's the Tone Studio on the computer. Would be nice if they added BT and a phone app but that would raise the price. The cleans are not quite as good as the GT100, but the dirty amps are superior. Being an analog signal path you get that 3D projection and hard to describe amp feel. Loud. Very loud. Easy to get a great tone at a low volume. Direct out to the console for PA, or direct out to the DAW for silent recording. Nice features to have.
For me, the novelty of the Mustang GT100 wore off after about 6 months. It was fun and I really did like the '65 Twin & Bassman patches.
All the onboard effects were fun to play around with. In the end, I stuck with the Katana. It just made more sense to me and feels more like an amp rather than just a bunch of computer amp sims. I do see an advantage for the Mustang GTX in the studio going into a DAW. It would be nice to have all the different amps that just for that reason. But for playing out or at practice? It's the Katana every time.

I swear to God, me too. I took my mustang v2 into guitar center 3 days ago to try it side by side with a GTX100 before I decide to upgrade. I was very pleased with the GTX! They still had a Mustang GT 100 to compare as well and it still sounded bad when compared to the v2 or GTX. In spite of my own ears approving, I declined the sale once I saw Shane was going to review it. I wanted to see what the thunder from down under had to say about it first.

su1ac0 Guys, I gotta be honest with you guys: me too! I do trust the other reviewers and I have the GT100, partially based upon Shane’s review which had it as such an upgrade from the previous version and it has been great for my needs. However, seeing what others were saying about the GTX got me excited for the expectations of Shane’s review. NO OFFENSE AT ALL TO OTHER REVIEWERS, but other reviews show what this amp does, while Shane’s review shows you what it POTENTIALLY CAN do. I think the Fender people even stress that you explore this amp, which isn’t really done in the other reviews. Big for me as well (and no offense Katana) is that everything can be done right from the amp, but also it is Bluetooth compatible. Needless to say I will likely be upgrading shortly.

I have the GT 100.I also have a red and a white Mustang III v2 and a v2 head with matching 4x 12 cab and I love them all.My original Mustang III (the red one ) was so great I found a spare just in case mine quit and Fender never did a reissue! I didn’t particularly like my GT 100 until I went into the menu and did a bright cut in the global eq.There have been several wifi updates to this amp since I bought it and I really like it now.Unlike many others,I think the GT looks a lot better than the GTX.The GTX looks cheap compared to the first two Mustangs, plus the controls are hiding at the back. The first Mustang was the best looking one.I believe they should have kept that look regardless of what they did to it internally.I had a Boss Katana Artist that sounded great but took it back after I realized I needed a computer to access all it’s features.I can do anything I want to do on a Mustang with one hand.Love your videos,Shane.I’m a fan.

Thus I guess it's better to buy the 100W if the sound is also good at low volume, isn't it? (my need is at home and studio with the band and may be sometimes on stage instead of my Blues junior). I have no idea if the Blues Junior (tube 15W) is closer to the GTX50 or the GTX100 in terms of volume.

I've got a Mustang 3 v2 and I found also that it's not all about going through all the presets to get the sound you want. Once you learn how to edit you can make any preset sound the way you like. I have 4 presets that are the ones I generally use for the most part, so I've got them as my first 4 presets which makes them quicker to switch between, rather than having to cycle through a couple of dozen or more to get to the one I want.
I was not all that impressed with the sound of my amp when I first got it. I thought it had too brittle or harsh a sound on the high end frequencies which I found hard to roll off with the tone controls but came across a video that claimed these amps can sound like that when first played through due to the speaker itself, and suggested putting some hours into really working the speaker and it will mellow out on it's own. And I found this to be true after a few gigs. My amp is also 100 watts into 1 12" Celestion.
So just a tip for someone who buys the GTX 100 and finds the same thing. The good news is that 100 watts is a lot of power you can use to work that shit out of the speaker and after a few gigs you may notice how your amp is starting to sound a bit "warmer". You have now "broken in" the speaker.
My amp only came with the two button footswitch. I recently found a four button version at the local music store but it was the GTX version. To my surprise it has full functionality with my Mustang 3, and I find especially on live gigs, it saves a lot of work, and if you can get all your effects you've assigned to your presets sounding to your liking, that footswitch is the only device you need at your feet. You don't need a large array of floor pedals since you've already built your presets to include whatever effect(s) you want.
I love what Fender has done for the low price amp market. These amps perform very well and for the price I think you actually get a little more than what you'd expect to pay for in terms of how versatile it really is. It makes streamlining your rig so easy - 1 guitar chord that goes directly to the amp, and a footswitch with it's own connections to the back of the amp, takes two minutes to set up - what's not to like.
I was thinking of upgrading to the GTX, but after reviewing a few videos on the GTX models, I'm not sure it's that much of an upgrade as both amps seem to have the same general architecture with a couple of extra bells and whistles I suppose for the GTX, but not necessarily stuff that I need, as my amp does more than enough for my purposes.
But I would certainly recommend a GTX for anyone who's wanting a good, powerful, versatile and very reasonably priced amp. And if I'm not mistaken, the GTX 100 model includes the FOUR button footswitch - which irks me a bit because I had to by one separately lol - this amp packs a lot of features and capabilities for the buck.

I own a katana 100 with the Waza and just tried the GTX100 earlier today. As far as clean tones, the Fender smokes my katana. It is very good and the sound projection is massive. But I still give the nod to my katana for dirt and especially high gain. That all said, I was actually more impressed by the Champion 100XL. It doesn't have as many features and some of the effects are kinda cheesy, but holy smokes it is a fantastic amp to serve as a foundation for a live rig. I've gigged with the standard champion 100 with success but always felt it got kinda honky when cranking into the breakup territory. Maybe it's just because of different speakers, but the XL actually gets even better dynamics and a very pleasing compression when cranked, without the honk. Now I'm just talking about the clean tones here because that's how I usually play and just add pedals for dirt. That said the champion xl has a fantastic and I mean fantastic setting on the second channel that blew me away. Like a Plexi snarl in the midrange with a Twin's rounded highs and lows. Reminded me a lot of Tom Morello's tone in the Rage days (not quite clean, not quite filthy, yet somehow powerful). The vibratone effect on it is also a killer sound that I'll probably use a lot when I pull the trigger on one. Don't sleep on the 100XL. It is a steal and possibly one of the only SS amps that I felt would slay in a live setting.
