      +lenard ggor It happens regardless of how severe things are too, and it's worldwide. In Canada, a girl pulled out in front of me and my car was pretty wrecked, airbags and all, radiator fluid everywhere, steam, bodywork crushed into the wheel etc. People were still honking at us even though the vehicles were clearly disabled.

    I'm from the U.S. so excuse for my ignorance, but I feel that the markings on the road are extremely confusing. Yet, after reading the comments, I do agree that the car driver is completely at fault.

    • @qj877
      @qj877 8 років тому +8

      After I replayed the video I could see the car tried to change direction. But that was my first thought, the markings are confusing as hell and look overcomplicated. I'm sure it's nothing for them but still.

    • @Jack846Burton
      @Jack846Burton 8 років тому +16

      +DemocracyOfHypocrisy the writing is pretty much telling you where the lane you're in leads you on to. and the arrows say if you take a left exit, go straight on or turn left, once you're used to them they're really simple.
      the lane the rider was in allows left turns and straight on, the one the driver was in is left turn only and the driver tried to go straight, the driver is 100% at blame

    • @CentralJerseyDrivers

    • @qj877

      +Jack Burton
      One of the things that looks confusing to me is on the roundabout there were white dotted lines crossing each other. Don't see that here. And the zig zagging lines on the two lane road. In the US, a divided road will have a yellow double or solid line in the middle telling you that's oncoming traffic. When there is no yellow line you can generally ride in both lanes. Strange to see nothing but white on the road.

    as a biker I'd say this one could have been avoided, just assume everyone's an idiot and everybody is trying to kill you. people choose the wrong Lane people change their mind at the last minute people do the unexpected. hope you and your bike live to ride another day.

      +Chase Pendleton It was the motorcyclist fault. 1) The outside line does not have to exit the round about 2) If you want to exit the round about you should be on the outside lane and not cut across from the inside.

    • @DavidB445
      @DavidB445 8 років тому +4

      +dangeroushobo Car was at fault. The lane he was in does have to exit and clearly changes direction at the last minute, sudden movement of the car. Take a look at the road markings, both lanes lead to the A52 meaning the left lane cannot keep going around as it would cut off the right lane, the lane the biker is in..
      Left lane should only go 1st or 2nd exit.. all other exits you must be in the right hand lane...

    • @mattballam
      @mattballam 8 років тому

      Not all roundabout markings tail off to each exit, in fact most don't, you are supposed to know when safe to exit, and the motorcycle had every right to. There are 2 lanes on the adjoining road so both outside and middle lanes may both join, just watch the three cars in front of the bike, they all join just fine. The car is at fault.

  • @RevvedUpBiker
    @RevvedUpBiker 8 років тому +262

    The car changed his course. It is the cars fault. At first glance you may think it's the bikers fault but it isn't. The biker could have helped himself by staying at the same flow rate as the nearby traffic, and only accelerate when you know your exit is fully clear.

    • @RevvedUpBiker
      @RevvedUpBiker 8 років тому +15

      *****
      No it's not the bikes fault, but he could have taken that junction a lot better. It takes experience to judge a potential hazard. The biker made the situation worse by accelerating when he did.

      People do stupid things. I never go much faster than the moving traffic on a roundabout simply because people don't always indicate right and then suddenly change their mind and just cut straight across. It shouldn't take that much experience, you just need common sense. The rider could have reduced his risk.

    • @ERiCDrAyViN
      @ERiCDrAyViN 9 років тому +3

      Cyclingbikingtrucker car is at fault of course. Although biker could have avoided the collision by going more slowly and anticipating the car's movement. It was perfectly clear the car was not planning on turning left from early on.

    • @Theorycraft
      @Theorycraft 8 років тому +4

      +Cyclingbikingtrucker Both are equally at fault in my opinion. Car is at fault for changing his mind and coming back into the lane, motorcycle is at fault for cutting across two lanes. If you want to turn left off a round-about you need to be in the left most lane. This is the same if you're turning turn normally, you need to be in the left most lane. The motorcyclist was in the right lane, and cut across the left lane to turn left. Both at fault.

    1:43 - No matter how you cut it, that was a straight-up rookie move on the part of the motorcyclist.
    If you don't assume everyone in a car is a moron, these totally-avoidable crashes will happen over and over and over again.

    You gave yourself no reaction time at all - I'm not saying you were the one to blame for the accident, but you really should have kept your speed down until you had a clearway, not accelerate off a roundabout when others were still on it, that's just asking for bother and broken bones - again, not saying it was your fault, it wasn't, it was the car driver to blame - but your bones aren't protected by a metal box unlike the car driver so it's up to you to ride as though your life depends on it - cause it does !!

    As a rider I have to say the bike was at fault.First, it is clear that the car was in the lane first. Yes, no signal and a late turn but still was there first.Second it's clear the bike was following the trajectory of the red car in front of it, which was to go from the far right lane, across the lane where the collision occurred and off to the left.With the car in the lane first and the bike accelerating (incorrectly assuming the car was staying left), the bike was at fault.

    First of all, I'm not from the UK, but we have a lot of roundabouts with multiple lanes here, too. So when I went to the UK for vacation I thought I'd be fine taking them as I would here. This thought changed abruptly when I enterd the first roundabout.... I figured I'd stick to my lane and be alright, but it wasn't that easy. Eventually I looked it up, watched videos etc. to find out how they work. I got it now and can say the car was in the wrong, but in most other countries he wouldn't have been in the wrong.

    Car driver did not break any rules at all as he is following his lane. Biker should hand over his licence for poor driving skills, apart from being unable to recognize his mistake by running into a car. You do not deserve such a bike, go and get a tricycle

If you were saw a car at a turning lane, you *will* assume that the driver will turn because they're on that lane. Same goes for the biker here. He assumed that she was gonna turn because she's, by law, required to turn on that lane.

      Not his fault at all u took an illegal lane switch to go to an exit. bikes r treated like cars on the road. And if u were in a car u wouldn't have been trying to do the and probably would totalled one or both cars.That red car in front of u is kinda being wreckles as the lanes ur in r a 1 way street and both lanes u can go straight but only the left lane is for the exit. Although I'm from Canada so I don't know for sure but logically if ur looking at this it doesn't make sense for u to wanna just intercept through a lane for an exit. Doesn't make sense to me

    • @Delogros
      @Delogros 6 років тому

      No he didn't, his lane went onto the exit so what are you talking about? if you are still confused look at the like 6 cars in front in his lane that also take the exit to join the main road, now the car driver however did make an illegal lane split.
      Again, look at all the cars in front of him (and read the markings on the road while your at it), what are you talking about?... I have to assume your from a country that doesn't do roundabouts.
      Nope, both lanes are for the exit... it's to a main road and is why more or less all the vehicles involved are going that way, the left lane MUST take the exit, the right lane can EITHER take the exit or carry on around the roundabout.

  • @Anonnymouse53

    The car driver was obviously in the wrong for the lane discipline, observation & signalling. But at the same time we should always try to ride with a bigger margin than that at roundabouts and junctions. Totally avoidable - no need to be closing the gap like that at an exit, even if it is reasonable to expect the car in front to stay in lane.
    I've had similar accidents and I think it is important for us riders to realise that whilst in an ideal world car drivers will notice us, the truth is that modern cars have huge blind spots (thick pillars for cabin safety) and bikes are small, quick & in unpredictable road positions & not all car drivers are attentive. It frightens me how much faith some riders put in car drivers to act predictably or to have seen/considered them. Ultimately we are responsible for our own safety and must always expect the worst from other road users if we expect to remain safe.
    I'm not having a go at the rider - I think most riders with any miles have had an off like this one.
    But also have to be real, blaming car drivers for their mistakes doesn't make us any safer and we can all be a bit safer on the road, usually just a little bit more patience and space is all we need.
    Thankfully it looks like a hot bath and a trip to the garage should sort it all out.
    Take care out there guys.

    I've got my license, I'm a US driver, and I can say with absolute certainty that the fault is entirely on the driver of the car.
    You just have to think of everything in a flipped manner in this circumstance, where the car may be on the right side taking a right exit. They did not exit, but the person in one lane over (who is allowed to go straight) continued down their course, resulting in a collision.
    The person driving the car is at fault, there is simply no discussion.

    The bike was taking the inside(middle) lane to the exit, which is perfectly legal because the main rule of a round-a-bout which disallows you to continue through the circle from the third outside(exit only) lane. The car had already departed onto the third(exit) lane and changed his mind mid way and pulled back across lane 2 without indicating to get back into the circle pushing the bike out of his rightful place. If the rule wasn't broken by the driver of the car, traffic would have flowed seamlessly.

    I can see a lot of comments saying "people not from the UK stop commenting saying the biker is wrong"
    I am from the UK (South Yorkshire) and in my eyes, both parties are in the wrong here:
    Yes, the driver was in the left hand land and SHOULD have exited the roundabout as indicated by the lane markings...and yes, if he wanted to change his mind he SHOULD have indicated using the right hand indicators
    However, at a junction such as a roundabout, you should NEVER attempt to overtake traffic in another lane, except for when the traffic is queueing...and even if you do have to pass traffic, you should do so at a safe pace, not at speed as this biker did...doing so puts you in a very vulnerable position for people doing unpredictable manoeuvres such as this, and puts you in the line of fire which this video very clearly shows
    Moral of the story...if you're about to exit the roundabout into what would become the "overtaking lane", pass the traffic on the left at a steady pace...only accelerate once you have exited the junction
    Again, not condoning the actions of the driver, but everyone has a responsibility to ensure their own safety...always look ahead and try to predict stupid behaviour, that's the only way you can ensure being able to arrive at your destination in one piece

      so you put the blame on biker that did just what he was supposed to do and you don't blame the driver that changed his lane in the middle of a just roundabout although he could have gone straight and then used roads up ahead to turn where he was going. and no the biker wasn't even going over the speed limit so that is no good reason why the biker should be blamed

    • @AndyGuinan

      If you are addressing Con Man, he also stated that "the car driver was a moron"
      I do not put the blame solely on the biker...I said BOTH parties are to blame...the biker was exiting the roundabout far too fast, which leaves him vulnerable to incidents such as this...if he had been travelling at a reduced speed, he would have had more time to react and avoided the collision...people pull this sort of idiotic manoeuvre all the time, and while it's a stupid illegal move to make, it's very predictable, therefore avoidable

      +Crispin Bacon Maybe I'm an idiot, but I don't get it. What sense would it be for someone on the *inside* of the roundabout exit? I'm looking at the road markings and it seems to me that the people on the inside have to stay *in* the roundabout before moving out on their exit. But what do I know?

    • @EastsideMartin
      @EastsideMartin 8 років тому

      +LazyScoutJace I think in england lane splitting is legal for motorcycles so it makes sense that he was using the inside lane, plus the outside lane is for exiting the roundabout so the car is in the wrong.

    • @LazyScoutJace
      @LazyScoutJace 8 років тому +4

      +Martin Broski I dunno, I still don't see it. Lane-splitting or not, when I look at the road markings, it looks to me as the outside lane has a choice in exiting or going straight. It also looks to me that the person in the inside lane must stay and continue through the roundabout. We have roundabouts here and lane-splitting here California too. As a motorcyclist myself, I would not even consider exiting from the inside lane *UNLESS* there is clear signage that it is a protected lane that must exit.
      But perhaps you guys are right. When I see the red car and several ahead exiting from the footage, maybe it's legal - though I don't get it.

    for all those people wanting to get schooled by a 15 year old. The roundabout is a two lane roundabout, for a 4 exit roundabout the first land can only exit at 1 and 2 and the 2nd lane can exit at 2 - 4, so the car was completely in wrong as he was attempting to be in lane 1 and go to exit 3 or 4

    I think what many Americans struggle with is that it feels like the biker is entering a new Lane because he crosses a broken white line when in fact, that was his Lane all along. Pause at 1:45 and you see both lanes can exit there, with the outside Lane being forced to exit there to avoid cutting in front of any one on the inside Lane who wanted to exit there. If you pause at 1:59, you may get a better idea of how it works, the navy car is where the VW should have gone.

    Biker's fault. Well, not technically, but he is the one who ate shit, could have broke his back etc, while the degenerate in the car was all good. Driving too aggressively through a roundabout, not paying attention, and worst of all thinking traffic laws are material things that can protect him. Hopefully it was a lesson for him though.

    I had the same exact thing happen to me in a roundabout in Brooklyn. Drivers are always switching out at the last second. They are looking out for everything but motorcycle or bicycles. It's to the point that in a lot of areas, they put plastic barriers to block idiots from doing that.

    Its funny how all the Americans, who clearly have no idea about driving in the UK, are trying to blame the biker by using the laws of the road from the US. We have different laws in the UK.
    The car was in the left hand lane which is for exiting the roundabout to the left or to go straight ahead, the biker was in the right hand lane which means he could have exited straight ahead, or carry on going around the roundabout to exit on the right.
    Where the crash happened the car should have exited the roundabout (because he was in the exiting lane) not try and cut across lanes to carry on going around, the biker could have also exited in the same place because there was two exit lanes or carry on going around.If the car driver wanted to carry on around the roundabout he should have been in front or behind the biker.

  • @wolfe1970

    Everyone who thinks the biker is in the wrong go look again and watch the red mini in front of the bike, the road markings are clearly marked, the biker was in the right lane for the exit, following the red mini.

  • @satoshiikeda1918

    If you look closely, the driver was in between the furthest left lane and the middle lane, he then decided to change his mind and continue on in the roundabout. the motorcyclist was in the far right lane and had no business cutting across and trying to exit while accelerating. imo car is at fault for not sticking to one lane, motorcyclist is at fault for trying to cut across and exit.

    • @Delogros
      @Delogros 6 років тому

      The bikers lane goes straight onto the exit and carries on around the roundabout (watch the 8 odd cars in front of him) while the left lane (the car lane) can ONLY take the exit. Biker did nothing wrong here.

  • @BikesAndScribbles
    @BikesAndScribbles 8 років тому

    I can't believe how many people think the biker was in the wrong. Can they not read road markings. Both lanes clearly say they go to the A52 (M1) which is where the biker was trying to go in the right lane of the exit, like all the other cars in front of him did.

    I don’t know how tf roads in Europe work but even as a lane change what the car driver did was wrong. Changed way too late without a look over the shoulder to look for oncoming traffic from that lane. You can claim the motorcyclist was going a little fast, but the car driver looks to have slowed down and even slowed traffic before the lane change, probably because he was lost and realized he was going the wrong way. This makes it hard to really gage if the motorcycle rider was going fast for the road or not. That is just my opinion as an American driver, glad you made it out okay👌🏼

    Hard lucky but glad you are not seriously hurt! I use that roundabout regularly and its a amazing how impatient people are when traffic queues for that Stapleford exit (where the VW seemed to intended to go). Amazing how people just wander about without even looking at least.

    Czech here asking, in UK you have to be in the right lane to continue on the roundabout? If you drive in the left lane you have to exit in the nearest exit? Do i understand it correctly? And I hope you and your bike are ok :)

  • @bendungee1669
    @bendungee1669 8 років тому

    Wow! I have driven in Europe, Brazil and the US and this intersection is very confusing. Roads are suppose to be universal so people understand the rules of the road. The road starts off with three lanes with the left lane exiting before crossing an intersection and converting to two lane with a third lane appearing directly after the intersection to become an entrance road connecting directly to a double lane fork in the road with a bend in it. That's a recipe for disaster. The guy in the silver car is in the left lane and the guy in the red car was in the right lane and they converged into the middle lane. If that red car was going a little slower he would have been in the accident. There are no arrows showing the way. The guy in the silver car should have been in the middle lane if he wanted to turn right. You can see him looking at the biker before colliding into the biker.

    I don't know, I'm not from the UK, but it seems obvious that the lane the car was in was NOT for going right. Here in the U.S. it would be like turning right from the left lane perhaps.

    The bike rider was in the wrong lane and tried to cut across the lane the car was in to make the turnoff. The car driver was in the right lane for the turnoff but decided to go around the roundabout. Both guilty of poor driving, and that's the outcome of being aggressive when riding your bike. Not if it happens, but when.
