Cliff passed away in Sept 1986, a few months after the release of their album “Master of Puppets.” The live show in Seattle 1989 was with bassist, Jason Newstead, who joined the band in late 1986 and was with them until early 2001. RIP Cliff, miss ya man!
Edit: I forgot to say great reaction and I love watching your reactions and particularly the Metallica journey you have taken!

I always say this when anyone reacts to this performance: kudos to the camera guy. He captured some of, if not the most, iconic moments of Cliff as a performer. Instead of going over the entire band during the intro he stayed on Cliff as he headbangs like a madman, his hair waiving in the air like a flag for heavy metal. How easily could it have been to just focus on James during the second verse, missing Cliff pointing to his eyes.

Cliff was their 'big brother', he was an inspiration and a teacher to them; he introduced them to classical music and a lot of other styles of music. They lost more than just a band member when he passed away, and that marked them and their music. You can hear it in their 'Justice' era, all the aggressiveness and resent put both into the music and the lyrics.
And as always, thanks for the video and all the energy you give out.

@Bisscute you have to hear "Anesthesia pulling teeth" 🤘
The whole song is one big Cliff Burton bass solo . You can listen to the studio version which is nicely tuned or to an 1983 live version , which shows what a freaking young god Cliff was 🤟
Edit : this will take you deeper down into metallicas rabbit hole 😉🤟

I really recommend that too. The live version really shows how Cliff is the beast with the bass, even the video quality is poor. Also you could see them all as really young, quite early performance on their career.
Also bonus tip: Metallica performed the bass solo in their concert with San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. There the classical bass player of the orchestra played the Anasthesia Pulling Teeth as a tribute to Cliff. Really insane skills doing the same with double bass, and lovely to see the joy on the band member faces after the performance, feeling the tribute.

Now that Bisscute is familiar with Cliff Burton, I think it's time she listens to Orion (1986) - if she has not already - which I understood was played at his funeral. It's already got an emotional vibe to it (especially that middle section), but factor in the "memorial for a fallen talent" component, and it hits harder.
Also, To Live Is To Die (1988)...

  • @sheldonnicholl3599

Cliff had massive finger strength! He had to in order to approach the bass the way he did. I play bass. Whenever I pick up a guitar (rarely), I always find it funny how effortless it is to fret individual notes because of the difference in the string gauges. Cliff was awesome in his composition and performance. Check out the instrumental "Orion" from the Master of Puppets album. Cliff's influence is everywhere (including two great bass interludes and a bass solo at the end that sounds like a low-end guitar solo). . . . Jason did a great job for the 14-15 years he was there. He had his own style (pick, 5-string bass) and influence. . . . Rob Trujillo (former Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, Ozzy Osborne, and Black Label Society bassist) is much more similar to Cliff, but with some funk (when he does his own thing). Metallica has been blessed with great bassists, imo!

2:44 "That's a freaking bass." Kirk Hammett inspired me to pick up guitar when I got into them in the 90s. It was discovering Cliff Burton that started my journey to switching to bass guitar after 9 years of playing guitar. I had no clue you could do the things he did, and he blew my mind. The song at the end was The Four Horseman, another one that Cliff excelled on.

You did the reaction to Creeping Death live in San Diego 1992 (imho the best live with Seattle 1989). Cliff died in 1986 and Jason replaced him. Cliff was a better player but Jason had more stage presence, better backing vocals.

This is possibly the most iconic bass performance in metal. Les Claypool is one of the few bass players who can hold a candle to Cliff, he auditioned to replace Cliff but James & Lars told him he's too good and should form a band of his own. So he did and world gave the world Primus. Primus is fantastic but waaaaay out there, maybe try Jonny was A Race Car Driver (from Sailing the Seven Seas of Cheese) as a reaction video? I was a early teen metalhead when Metallica first came out. No internet. We had pirate radio stations and you always had your cassette ready to record. If you were lucky, you had a good record store to find gems. Sometimes you had to get the original band that Metallica covered....Budgie, Misfits, etc. Concert tickets and new albums...we might stand in line for days. 🤘😜

Cliff Burton was only 23 when this was shot in 1985 at the 'Day at the Green' festival show... Metallica were touring for the album 'Ride the Lightning' (2nd album). Unfortunately, this is one of the best quality footage for Metallica's Cliff Burton years... they released a video "Cliff 'em all" which put together footage shot by fans and filmed by crews between 1983 and 1986. Metallica were just becoming popular when Cliff Burton was killed in a tour bus accident in 1986 at age 24.
From what I've read, Cliff Burton was a huge fan of 70's bands like ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath... but he was also a schooled musician and he loved classical music as well. Every bass player in the 80's was a fan of Gene Simmons of Kiss (whether they admitted it or not!) His playing style was inspired by Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead (who also played bass w/ a distortion pedal). His bass solo was on the first Metallica album "Kill 'em all" in 1983 w/ the track "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth" which goes into the next song 'Whiplash'.

Cliff was their bassist,he passed away at 24 years old, then after he died Jason Newsted joined and bring back Metallica to life and been soul of them for long with his amazing skills and song my friend of misery until early 2001 when he leaves because they didn't wanted his request for 1 year pause so he can make his own song or it's album idk then the Roberto Trujillio come,a great bassist from Mexico who is still part of Metallica
Edit:forgot first bassist is mc cartney and also after Jason lefted Bob rock was for sometime bassist then Robert

Cliff is arguably the moat influential metal bassist after Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath. His intro to this song is so Iconic that out of respect for his memory both Jason and Robert created there own ibas intros foe this song and play Cliffs classic one only on special ocassions.
Dave Mustaine of Megadearh(who was a member of Metallic prior to their first album) still has a hard time when Cliff is brought up in intervieews because even though Dave was fired from the band, he loved cliff like a brother. There is a clip of Dave being interviews on the Joe Rogan podcast from a year or two ago where he almost breaks down in tears remembering Cliff
