Honestly, the best Metallica show(s) captured live is the entire Live Shit: Binge & Purge 'experience' of nearly 6 hours of video - 4 shows, of which Seattle was two of the included stops (multiple nights,) and San Diego being the other show captured on video over multiple nights. Mexico City was the entire audio experience of over 3 hours, (5 different shows,) and is insane in its own right.

The Black album was the line drawn in the sand for many. I'm 50. I saw Metallica in 2 different venues in Denver in the 80's that have been long since raised to the ground. Their fans had a hard time with anything after the Black album if you had been a fan up to that point. So your taste and assessment is spot on!

My favorite version of this song played live by far is the “cliff them all” version, August 85. This whole show at Seattle is epic, but especially master of puppets. Seattle 89 is my favorite live version of master of puppets. Check out “cliff them all”. You got to see Cliff Burton. Legend.

I know a lot of people prefer their older stuff. I do too but I don’t hate their newer stuff. They got older, they changed. Hetfield has struggled with addiction. Change is growth. With any aging band it’s harder to recapture the magic of youth. Not to mention the late Cliff Burton was a major influence on their early sound. I’d still be interested to hear your take on some of their later songs like Bleeding Me or even some of their covers like Turn the Page.

True, but they have become more mainstream, latest album sounds very generic, it's sad when you go on YT and see a cover of Lux Aeterna which is made with the old sound of Kill Em All and it actually sounds better than the original.

You like the older Metallica. You just earned a new subscriber. Rock on Sister. Rock on. 🤘😎🤘 Edited to add: YES. They took their time took you (the listener) on a journey. Thats why old school Metallica fans like myself (pre-Load/Reload) got so pissed when they “sold out” and made shorter songs for radio. Everything up to 1996 is AMAZING. After that, SHIT.

During the Black Album days, James blew out his vocal chords singing the cover So What and had to relearn how to sing using proper techniques. He almost had to retire from singing. I think that had a lot to do with his change in voice from previous albums. Its crazy to think that before that happened, he never really had proper training.

I agree with you that the old Metallica is just extra special and the new stuff really hasn't done it for me either except maybe a few songs here and there. However, I do encourage you to listen to a few of the songs on the 72 seasons album the new one. About six of the songs are kind of annoying, but the other six really grow on you, and two of those six are fantastic and I enjoy listening to them over and over. We don't mind if you listen to the 72 seasons songs, react to them (the music videos) and if you don't like something to say nope doesn't do it for me and go to the next one because I really think that since you like the old Metallica, and some of their songs on this new album actually are really in the old style in many ways, I think you'll like some of these songs. Hope to you though. I respect your decision either way. Take care and thanks for reacting well to For whom the Bell tolls, one of my favorite songs as well :-)

Always a pleasure to hear your thoughts!
As for Metallica suggestion, I don't know why people jump to the later 90's and onwards songs. The basics are the thrash Gods, who paved the way for metal as we know it. The change afterwards was right for them, to the stage they were in. I can't say I'm a big fan of it, even though I was (and will probably always be) a big fan of Metallica. But to know how things transpired, one has to know the legendary music of the 80's, and how huge they became in the scene, and how they broke into the mainstream, under such a short amount of time.
From Seatle, there is the whole show, honestly. Because every number was among the greatest ever played by Metallica.
But there is a string of their favorite covers, one video with "Last Caress (Misfits cover)/Am I Evil (Dimond Head cover)/Whiplash (Metallica's thrash hymn form Kill Em All). They work so well together. And the crowd shots from these songs are great.

The authority over the crowd that this era James Hetfield (and band) had is unparalleled. And if you analyze it, his voice is incredibly on point for what he asks it to do in a live setting. I think it meant a lot to him to bring his A-game to Seattle, specifically.

Pre-blackAlbum Metallica is the only Metallica for me. That's what I grew up with, what's who paved the way for other metal bands, and they were fearless and more genuine in their creativity.
Master of Puppets was their peak, Justice was their lingering greatness (sans Cliff Burton) pumping out one last great album, and Black Album was when they were began milking the dying horse.
Enter Sandman and Sad But True and the whole rest of the Black Album just felt like they were trying too hard but coming up short. It didn't have the darkness, weight, menace, and sense of grandeur of all their prior works. It's like they were no longer the same band, but a different group of people who sounded like them and tried to make a music career, mimicking their instruments & voice. Since then it's just been more of the same, and they no longer had my attention.
To this day, listening to Master of Puppets, and One, and Creeping Death, and a few others all have a physical effect on me. They're truly legendary.

James got more into "singing" during the Black Album. Initially, it just broadened his range. However, as the years went by, "singing" more saved his vocal cords so that he can still perform. He actually damages his throat/vocal cords in the past and has learned how to keep himself healthy.

Having grown up in the 80's and early 90's, I was there every step of the way with Metallica and I think context has a lot to do with some of us older folks preferring their pre-black album era. We saw the band progress with each album and peak with ...And Justice For All. I consider myself fortunate to have witnessed Metallica live on that tour in 1989. It was the perfect time because they could play a two hour, twenty song set and every single song was a fan favorite. Now, imagine the anticipation for the next album. We sat down and listened to the black album and were like, "WTF?" It wasn't a forward progression. It wasn't horrible but it definitely didn't feel like that slow burning, dark, dangerous, angry, heaviness we had come to know and love AND expect. Guess their first mistake was going with Bon Jovi's producer. But honestly, I quit paying attention to what they did after that. You never see anyone react to their eyeliner and short hair period. You're absolutely right that they conformed and started trying to fit in. They were never about that in the 80's.

    • @williamwolter5393
      @williamwolter5393 11 місяців тому +2

Completely agree I tried with the black album I saw Metallica when they were touring between Black and what load album or whatever and apparently the band got tired of playing songs off the Black album because they played for a solid two hours plus and only two songs were from the black album. For me the loss of Cliff was the bands falling. His love for Classical music and the ideas of musical structure and theory he showed James and Lars really showed up as the songs continued to progress. Not to Mention the way Cliff shreds that bass Guitar intro is a sound never to be matched. After the Black album and then Lars and James controlling ways and selling out to the industry. Add in their fight to kill Napster and music sharing I am surprised that any newer Metallica is ever reacted to on UA-cam for fear that the two of them be like that's our music and we deserve to profit for the use of it. "We sell records so you buy them not to just share and make copies for our fans will always be true and support our fight" What a sad ending in my book for what once was the best in thrash metal in 80's. Luckily, I found solace in the form of Slayer and although I will never stop listening to early Metallica, corporate sell outs and a poor attitude is all I find in the new Metallica.

Alot of metallica fans have their opinions and I feel the same way you do.. I heard master of puppets in '86 and was hooked instantly, loved all their music to justice and when black album came out I liked a few songs but just didn't love it the way I loved their albums before. I've tried to listen to all their new stuff after the black album but I could never get into it and even their live performances after '93 I just can't get into them.
But everyone has their own opinion of metallica and they're still my favorite band of all time, saw them live in their prime in 89 & 92 and that's all that matters to me😊

I would be interested in seeing how you react to their live performance with the San Francisco Philharmonic Orchestra concert and their "later" song HERO OF THE DAY. I am an old-school-Metallica-is-best guy too, but that one has a something special to it factor. I think you'll really enjoy that one.

Me encanta Metallica... escuchaste a mi parecer, el mejor concierto registrado que tienen ellos. Seattle`89 ... insisto con esta canción "The Outlaw Torn álbum "Load" Studio version

Of course their new stuff isn't as great as their old stuff that's 9 times out of 10 the case for most bands who've been playing for 30+ years but still can't deny they been putting out good content still at age 60

Kathryn, You figured it out well. I agree. True fan of them. Now the 'anger and energy' is not what it used to be in their songs.

listen to “Leper Messiah” on the Master of Puppets album. That’s a prime example of his old ‘86 voice.

Justice was the first album of Metallica I listened to all the way through and it’s become the gold standard of their discography for me. I don’t think any of their albums quite reached that level of creativity, IMO. That being said, Metallica is my favorite metal band.
James’s voice definitely changed over the years, the justice/black album voice being at the peak of his vocal intensity (IMO). From Load onwards, he definitely adopted a more traditional vocal approach. He started incorporating a country twang, occasionally which he grew out of by St. Anger, but his voice has never quite been the same since the early nineties. I can’t stand hearing newer versions of NEM (from the black album) that twang shows up when he sings certain sustained notes and it bugs me to hear. It sounds out of key to my ears.
