TBH, Jason was the best bass player Metallica had... even more live... while Cliff was more creative in sound extracting, Jason was a true metalhead promoted to the stage. Jason's back vocals were the best in business!! A shame they didn't trust him and grieved Cliff over Jason... almost cutting him out of Justice... Rob unfortunately is no more than a regular big band basist.
Seattle 89 is undoubtedly dubbed their prime concert video. They've had their ups and downs, but they are definitely in a 2nd late career prime live. I 2nd the S&M version. Soooo good.
89 was outstanding but I always loved the energy and aggression from this 1986 show in Canada. Wish the quality of the vid was better.

I watch the Seattle 89 concert at least once a year. It doesn't matter my mood, this concert just KILLS everytime. I love it so much.
I’ve heard from one or two people the crowd was louder than it shows on the video although it picks up pretty well I could only imagine the energy in that arena that night!!

As a guitarist myself, whenever I see an Explorer I immediately think of Matthias Jabs and Scorpions, who coincidentally was the headliner at that 1985 Day On The Green. Not that either one of them plays an Explorer exclusively.

I was at that 1985 Day on the Green show, front and center. What a great day of music. I still have my original Ride The Lightning tour tee shirt from that day. I've since seen them a bunch of times, but those first pre-black album tours I went to see for Lightning, Puppets and Justice haven't been topped. 🤘

@@goldenwolf8081 You gotta remember, Metallica weren't even a blip on most peoples radar at this point. I already had the Kill 'em All album, but wasn't able to catch them prior to the Lightning tour. We also didn't know we were going to lose Cliff, so we didn't fixate on him exclusively like people tend to do now. He was just one of the guys in Metallica, no more, no less. Now, he's gone on to become a mythical figure as tends to happen with musicians we lose too soon. Was he fun to watch, hell yes! My impression of him on stage, coming from someone who suffered from migraines my whole life, was that I couldn't keep my head banging like he did for more than a few minutes before I'd have to tap out! He did it non-stop. But I can't say that I focused on him any more than the rest of the guys that day. And being a guitarist myself, whose band covered this song immediately after its release, I kind of focused on James and Kirk.
The '89 Seattle show is, perhaps, one of the greatest concerts ever recorded with just absolutely stellar and unrelenting performances all the way through. I'm really interested to see what you think of their transformation between Ride The Lightning through to the Black album, if you think the first two albums are great then just wait till you hear The Thing That Should Not be and Dyer's Eve.
The thing that should not be is not the highlight on Master of Puppets, not that it's not great, there are just other songs that are much much greater.

The 80s, when they were actually MIGHTY METALLICA. Jason Newsted was the best thing to happen to Metallica after Cliff died. He LOVED the music and playing it for the fans.💪🏻🤘🏻
That 89 clip was from the Seattle 89 concert. Regarded by most as their best ever live performance. Give that whole show a watch, it’s unreal. At their peak.

They played two concerts there, footage of the show has material from both concerts. You can see the occasional guitar change.
First off, I just want to say that I love this format of watching an old performance and comparing it to the new. Really gives you an idea of how the band as grown over the years. Secondly, can we just admire how good Metallica still sounds all these decades later? I have been to around 10 live performances of theirs all the way back to their Black album when I was pretty young, and have never once been disappointed. But man, seeing performances even from 2023 makes me just shake my head in disbelief. With so many bands going downhill, especially the lead singers just not being able to sing the way they used to, it is a testament to these guys and Hetfield's voice. Still going strong as ever and still rocking crowds worldwide. Masters of their craft. When you get a chance, check out their the full Seattle '89 show. It is one of their greatest performances and the crowd is insane from start to finish. Not to mention the camera work is exceptional. And also give the Monsters of Rock performance in Moscow a go. Another legendary performance with a legendary crowd.

Another live version you might want to check of this song is from the S&M 1999 with the San Francisco Symphony. It’ll get goosebumps all over your body.
Back in high school I used to listen to that concert every day on repeat, along with Seattle 1989. My two favorite performances
i was blessed enough to attend that 2023 concert in Arlington with my father, and it was so electric from start to finish!🤘🏽
I was at that DOG show in Oakland back in 1985. I had just turned 15. It was the last day of summer before I stepped into my first day of high school the day after this concert. Metallica played after the first group Yngwie Malsteen. After Metallica, Ratt, Y&T and the Scorpions headlined. Metallica ruled the stage that day, I have no memory of any of the other bands playing that day. I was about 10-15 yards from the stage, when Metallica started playing Creeping Death the crowd started swaying violently from one end of the field to the other. I got knocked down to my knees and was not easy getting back to my feet. I've seen them a few times since but they were at their absolute best on that day. I'll never forget it.

As for the reason Jason left, the most commonly told version is that circa 2001 he was burnt out and suggested that the band take a year off, in which time he'd also work on his Echobrain side project, James thought that any side projects would diminish the strength of Metallica and already objected to Jason having a small side project for fun previously with Devin Townsend called IR8 that James and Lars shut down. So the constant lack of being able to express himself as a song writer coupled with he and James had always had issues dating back to his joining the band after Cliff's death, he decided in 2001-02 to leave.
For me as someone who was a teenager in the 90's, I obviously got into the band after Cliff's death, but for me Jason was the soul of the band, especially from a live setting. As Lars and Kirk in particular loved to experiment, Jason was the core link to the bands fanbase because he himself was a fan of the band beforehand.
As for the issues depending on when James or Jason are asked you might get different answers. I've never heard one of them put down the other on a personal level more of a creative difference or what was believed to be in the best interest of the band. Honestly I thought James was out of line back then especially given how much of the bands down time was because of his drinking and rehab and I would hope he'd be more understanding if it happened today. I can also understand how James might have been frustrated with Jason not really being more of himself/creative and just copying what James was playing on guitar especially coming off working with Cliff.

@Rotherhamvanman look at a live performance in 2001. Jason vocals diminished from the 80's to the 2000's. Everyone wants to bring up his 80's and early 90s vocals but they wasn't the same in his later yrs with Metallica

I've seen Metallica live a few times over the years and I did see them on that Damaged Justice Tour in 1989 and I still think that is the best concert I have ever been to. I've seen a LOT of live acts too. They were simply at the top of their game at that point. Amazing show! :-D

The first 4 Metallica albums are all classics and Rtl, Puppets, Ajfa are in the top 5 greatest metal albums of all time.they are also the greatest live band ever imo, enjoy the ride.
The one from '89 sounds the most like the studio recording. The earlier one with Cliff is still my favorite though, even though it feels a bit rushed tempo wise.

Day on the green was August 31, 1985... I saw them Feb 15th 1985 at a bar, Reflexions, in metro STL... 6mo later, playing to huge crowds. So greatful I was able to experience them with all bass players live, but not grateful we all have to get old...

I saw them 1991 in LA. It was virtually the same as the '89 Seattle video. Truly the most amazing concert I've been to and I've seen quite a few bands. Good shit!
Saw them with Jason Wednesday may third 1989,at Thebarton Theatre ADELAIDE,played material up too, and justice for all,the best period to see them i believe,am a bass player and massive cliff fan , would have loved to see him live.the footage of cliff is from video cliff em all,vhf.
Their performance on Day At The Green is easily their best performance of the song with Cliff’s sick bass intro is just the icing on the cake

If i could choose any year to go back and see them 89 would be it. Their stage energy was out of this world, most of their best stuff was written, and newsteds windmill headbang is legendary.
I remember a story about Cliff's neck hurting him. His dad said something like "look at the way you head bang when you play"!!
The Day on the Green footage in 85 was Metallicas " coming out " party , it was local Boys finally getting out of the Club's and onto a Giant stage with mainstream bands.
The Documentary Murder in the Front Row goes into how big and special this gig was for Metallica, and goes into the drunken shenanigans that went on after.
They are the Beatles of Metal and the biggest band in Rock and Metal for a very good reason, but they have these important milestones along the way that pushed them further and further into popularity and Day on the Green is a HUGE one.
Noone else will ever beat Cliffs killer bass into from Day on the green '85.

For context Jason was bullied to the point to where in 2000 he had enough and left and he was bullied because it was one of the ways James showed he was grieving still, and also the fact he was not like cliff burton.

Great video! You left the best for last for sure. That Seattle 89 show is Metallica at the absolute peak of their powers. Next to Pink Floyd's Pulse concert it's the single greatest show I've seen. The energy is through the roof.
Cliff Burton was the only schooled musician in Metallica... he learned theory and musical arrangements. He taught James Hetfield everything he knew about harmonies. Metallica has always been centered around James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich... James wrote a bulk of the riffs and Lars' job is to arrange his riffs (or Kirk Hammett's riffs) into a song arrangement... James also wrote all the vocal melodies and lyrics for the band... Cliff was a big part of arranging w/ Lars and he came up w/ those cinematic instrumentals like 'Orion' and 'The call of Ktulu'... That was gone after he died in 1986. Metallica could not replicate what Burton brought to the band.
Cliff Burton was a huge fan of Lemmy Kilmister, bassist/ vocalist of Motorhead... and he would play bass w/ distortion, which made it sound like a lead guitar...
Jason Newsted, who took Cliff Burton's spot on bass in Metallica, came from the band Flotsam & Jetsam... he was a songwriter & lyricist in that band when he did their debut album 'Doomsday for the Deceiver' in 1986... And he was a huge Metallica fan - he had seen Cliff Burton play in 1985 on the 'Ride the Lightning' tour w/ W.A.S.P. and he was devastated when he got the news in 1986 that Burton had passed away.
Newsted was recommended to Metallica by Metal Blade Records head Brian Slagel (who released Metallica's first recording of 'Hit the Lights') and Newsted recalled that the band was drinking heavily during the audition and bass players were being ushered out in rapid succession... Somehow, he made the cut and was thrilled when James and Lars picked him.
However, Newsted was hazed pretty badly because the band & crew missed Burton and took out their frustrations on him for years... But Newsted took their abuse because he felt that this was his gig and gave Metallica 110% on stage and off when fans wanted to meet them... Unfortunately, he was not given the same reciprocation from Metallica... when recording 'And justice for all' in 1987/ '88, none of his ideas were used (except for 1 song - 'Blackened') and the insult to injury was when Lars ordered his bass tracks be faded from the final mix so that his drums were more audible... When Newsted heard the final mix, he was livid.
When recording the 'black' album in 1990/ '91, producer Bob Rock put his foot down - Newsted's bass would be in the mix... but James and Lars would still not use his ideas for songs on the album (Only 1 was used for 'My friend of misery')
When Metallica took a break from touring in 1994, Jason Newsted built his own studio called Chophouse and invited various musicians to jam w/ him and write songs... When James and Lars found out his tapes were circulating, they berated him: 'No music to be put out outside of Metallica. The end.'
Going into the 'Load' and 'Reload' albums in 1996, Newsted again saw only 1 of his ideas making the 2 albums... he was especially disappointed in the material and country songs on the record... And then, he saw Metallica doing photo shoots for the 'Load' album booklet that looked like a fashion magazine... It didn't sit well w/ him. Newsted had put his time into Metallica (10+ years) and he had few contributions to their music and little impact on their management (which bands would open their tours... which songs would be on their sets) ... It was like, "Here's your paycheck. Go play bass..."
Newsted felt like he had earned some freedom as a member of Metallica but was unable to do anything outside the band... He had made million$ but was unhappy creatively... One of the projects was a jazz non-metal band called Echobrain, and he had finished an album by them by 2000 and talked to Metallica's management about putting it out... It wasn't even a metal album, but James Hetfield told him that this record was not going to be released... That was what finally made him decide to leave the band...
Newsted later admitted, "The man I respected the most in Metallica... disrespected me the most."
Metallica was booked to play a VH1 Awards show in late 2000... Newsted performed the 1 song 'Fade to black'... and then refused to appear w/ the band to collect an award... He later revealed that he was abusing pills to combat injuries to his neck and spine, and was justifiably upset w/ Metallica's management.
In early 2001, Newsted attended a band meeting and made a proposal (which he knew would be rejected) - Metallica should take 1 full year off and recharge... He would work on his health and promote the Echobrain album.
Predictably, the band refused... they were making plans to record a new album. Newsted knew that Metallica was not even close to ready to make a new album (And he was proven right as the band fell apart in 2001 and the resulting album 'St. Anger' was their worst record ever) ... Newsted finally broke the news - he was leaving Metallica ... the new album would have to be recorded without him. He recalled being emotional and devastated w/ the band... and claimed that their managers came into the room like nothing was wrong and handed them papers and contracts w/ offers and whatnot... and he knew that he couldn't go back to that situation in Metallica.
Jason Newsted seemed happier once he was out of Metallica... he did an album & tour w/ Echobrain... then, he joined his friends in the Canadian sci-fi band Voivod and did 3 albums and helped them continue after the death of their guitarist Denis 'Piggy' D'Amour... He sustained an injury that needed surgery and recovery time away from music as well. Newsted apparently also helped his old band Flotsam & Jetsam get a second chance in 2012 and also got married that year ... He released a solo Newsted album 'Heavy metal music' in 2013.
Today, Jason Newsted is still actively pursuing music and art... he reconciled w/ members of Metallica by 2009 and was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame w/ Metallica and is friends w/ their current bassist Robert Trujillo.

Jason left because James and Lars could never get over the death of Cliff so they treated Jason like shit. Metallica was never the same live after he left. He was 100% energy 100% of the time, he wore band T shirts, he was a like a fan basically. They didn't allow him much creative input and didn't want him to do his own thing either. Rob is a nice guy and and a good bassists but as a Metallica member, there is no comparison.

I started listening to his Metallica CDs in 2004, and that's when I first heard what has now been my favourite song for almost 20 years🎸🤘🤘🔔 "YEAH!" "WHAT IS IT?!" "SING IT!" For Whom the Bell Tolls. I was at the show in Seattle. I have been to at least 100 shows since and it is still my favorite concert. Metallica in their prime. Plus they spent a lot of extra time getting the acoustics just right since they were recording for their boxset so it was the cleanest sounding metal concert I have ever been to.

Metallica Live in Nimes France in 2009 is so sick. You should check it out. Its in an ancient Colosseum. Sound so good and they are super tight in that show. Killer atmosphere and crowd. You wont regret it.
"How do you leave the biggest band in the world".. Easily, actually - If you're constantly told that "Everyone is equal in this band", but then at the same time experience that the other people in the band are a little more equal than you are, then you get pushed out, daily. Lars, James and Kirk has later realized that they weren't exactly the best of friends to Jason. He spent his entire time being in the band "Not Cliff", in the other peoples eyes.

It's hard to say For Whom the Bell Tolls is the biggest song from the album. They are almost all "big". If I had to guess though I'd say Fade to Black is actually their biggest (and best) song off this album. It's literally changed lives.
Fight Fire with Fire, Ride the Lighting, Call of Kutlu, Creeping Death...all better than Fade to black.

The 2023 live version of the song was played in Arlington at the AT&T stadium in August 2023. I was there both nights. A dream come true to be at my favorite bands concert.
I was at the MetLife show in NJ for the first stop both nights as well. Awesome to see some of the new songs debuted it was awesome

I had heard some Metallica in their (re)load era, but the first time music 'hit' me was with Linkin Park. After basically only listening to that band for about 4 years, I discovered more and more metal. Of course backtracked Metallica, but these days mainly listen to hard/metal/death-core.

My first intro into Metal was RHCP cover of Higher Ground, then FNM Epic then oddly 'Fading like a flower' riffage by Roxette, then came Guns n Roses, then METALLICA, then came Pantera, then came Deicide, then came Fear Factory, Machine Head, Sepultura, Carcass, Ministry, NIN, In Extremis, My Dying Bride, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, Meshuggah, Gojira, Polaris, Infant Annihilator........this is over 30 years of my metal journey right here! Some might have been missed but it is what it is, I loved loads of Nu Metal too fyi such as the obvious ones, CBF naming names, but you know them I am sure!

As a 50 year old Metalhead, who got into the genre in 1986/87, right there with the Muppets Tour, I can tell you this, that when the Grunge Era hit in 1992/93, because TPTB at Viacom (parent company of MTV) decided that 80s-inspired Rock music was no longer cool, I thought I was gonna kill myself for several years there because of the shit music that was coming out in the mid 90s. I know, I know, a lot of Millennials born in the 80s think that the 90s were great for. Music, but believe me...when you come from all the great Hair Metal bands and Thrash Metal bands and go into this slower grungy shit, with very little if any guitar solos, you're kinda like "WTF?" Ya know? Yeah, I hear the same crap from early Gen X'ers about how 70s Rock was great and whatnot, but come on...what they put out in the 70s compared to the major change that happened by like 1983 is no comparison. But back the 90s...you mentioned all those nuMetal bands, Slipknot, Mudvayne, and so forth, yeah, those didn't do much for me either. Too much down tuning the guitars, still no solos, and the vocals were boring. It wasn't until 2003 that I really started getting excited again for music when Heavy Metal...true Heavy Metal started to make a big comeback. I was like "YES! Finally, Heavy Metal has come back to the planet!" (You see what I did there?) And that's the year I finally upgraded to CDs from cassettes. And now 21 years later, my CD collection of both old bands and new (post 2000) bands is pretty extensive. My musical tastes have changed and flip-flopped quite a bit over the last 20 years. But I'll tell ya what, my favorite genre(s) now have to be a mixture of Power Metal and Symphonic Metal. Thrash is still OK, but it's lost a bit of its luster over the last 10 years. There was a Thrash Revival around 2007 or so, and there were a lot of new bands that popped up around that year, give or take, but sadly several of them only put out a couple albums and we haven't heard from them since the early 2010s. Progressive US Power Metal isn't bad either. Bands like Kamelot is a good example of that. Amazing stuff. What I kinds like now are these European bands that go all in with a Medieval theme. Bands like Warkings, Windrose, Feuerschwanz (aka Firetail). Check out one of their Wacken performances. Crazy stuff.
Well anyway, if you think about it, 80s-inspired Rock has been the longest lasting genre of music in the modern era except for Country, and even that genre has changed so much. But there's just something about aggressively tempo-ed music that's still just so much fun, I guess.

Fun fact, the flying V you see in the 2023 video that James is using, when you said he changed it up...that's his first guitar he actually toured with. It's a Japanese knockoff of a Gibson. If you watch some really old videos from like 1983 you can see him using that exact guitar. It's a little beat up now for obvious reasons 😂
The story of why Jason left is not something I know much about, but I kind of know the gist of it. During Jason’s time in Metallica he was hazed and abused by James, Lars and Kirk, who were still grieving the loss of Cliff during their 1986 tour in Europe. The biggest issue was that they weren’t given time to properly process those emotions. They had to keep going and this went on for years. In the 2000s Jason had this project called Echobrain and was given the ultimatum of quitting Metallica or quitting Echobrain. Jason chose the latter, partially because of them not letting him do his own thing.
They did admit their wrongdoings and they don’t treat Rob that way, so that’s huge.
I highly recommend that you read more into what actually happened because it’s quite interesting!
All my life I'm going to stick with the '85 concert, with the incomparable Cliff, I haven't gotten tired of watching that video for more than 30 years, and I'll never get tired of watching it. ✌🤟👍
This was my time, when I was a kid. Old Metallica, Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning, were my metal beginnings. I was born in 1968, so the 80s were my time in the sun.

85 was the best intro with Cliff, just ABSOLUTELY SHREDDING THE BASS. 89 was the best overall performance. James voice had really evolved drastically since 85 and they had better sound at the venue. Still though, my favourite concert is Monsters Of Rock 1991 in Mother Russia, LOL 🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Those early days were a great time for us fans. I was at the Day on the Green Oakland in 1985. I saw them a few months later in Sacramento on that tour. We could identify with those dudes. Most of us played guitar or drums and learned most of their songs to that point. Metallica was still learning their chops...trying to stay in tune and on time. Every time I saw them in those years they had trouble doing both! Haha. Cliff and Kirk played those Aria Pro guitars I think. James had a Gibson Explorer and I think an Electra V copy. We all thought it was a Gibson. These days they are absolute pros on better equipment.
One of James nicknames is “the riff master”. He is the master at coming up with riffs!

Saw them in May 1990 in Birmingham, UK the same say as having had my maths GCSE exam. The first gig I went to and paid for the ticket with money I'd earned myself. I wish I still had stuff like early Metallica to discover! Jason was controversially fired because he was working on his own solo stuff along side Metallica. It didn't come across in For Whom the Bell Tolls, but Jason's backing vocals were awesome too
For me growing up it was more my older brother listening to them, so it was more me hearing them by default. In my teens I tended to listen to Tori Amos, The Violent Femmes, Alannis Morissette, with some Barbara Streisand and The Carpenters thrown in the mix as well.
After almost 20 years 🔔z continues to be me favourite song, it will continue to be and always will be!. When im out on my bike and 🔔z starts i go along with the Heavy guitars and sing along with Chairman Het😁🤘🤘.It will be played at my um....yeah😏🎸🔔
An absolute MUST watch is 1991 Moscow Creeping Death. 1.6 million people!
So, at the 89 concert they were at the very very peak, also touring for about 2 years (can't tell how much time touring they had already at this show) and adding to that, we can see very clearly the alcohol levels were raising a lot heheh specially for James. So yes, there was a lot of energy down there from both the band and the crew.
