A topic that has been around forever: "When throwing a hook in boxing or MMA, should my palm be facing in or down to the ground?" A valid question, and honestly there is no true right or wrong -- it comes down to preference!

I personally use palm in for most of my hook punches, but use palm down for longer-ranged hooks. This keeps my thumb safer, and forces me to land with my knuckles. Feel free to experiment and see what works best for you. And remember: there is no right or wrong, as long as it get's the job done!

Nah don’t believe it
Shane you should just marry ant so you guys dont get separated again lol.
Your channels awesome! I was fighting (not real fighting) with my two friends and it was two against one and I won by a landslide! You've taught me so much!
Yea ants back :)
Greetings from Philippines!
You've been helping me a lot since 2007! Thank you and bless you a lot Shane!
Hmmm funny his first vid was in 2008
Good stuff bro
Then there's the Sanda/Sanshou long hook that you twist your knuckles inwards towards you. It's not one you really throw on its own, but if you use it at the end of a combo the extra torque on the hook can be brutal.
love the sound effects you make boom awesome
Good video Shane -I would also add that your choice of target is also a factor. To the ribs, horizontal knuckles can drive down between the ribs for greater penetration, whereas vertical is more blunt force. For beginners in striking, who may not be used to holding a strong wrist, and upside down vertical knuckle fist has least chance of breaking the wrist, and lifts the elbow for good over the guard form.
Dear Shane, thanks for making this channel. It has shown me how to defend myself. For a long time I was bullied. And I kinda still am. Now I practice in boxing and workout on a day to day basis! Thanks, and keep moving forward!
Quicktip question: how could I train my body as a whole to withstand blows, such as lower body strikes?
Good question
Maybe this one will be off help to you since you are talking about "lower body".

kyokushin karate
Spar with people who strike you often, and do lots of core strengthening exercises like crunches.
simple, abdominal workouts such as sit ups, leg lifts, flutter kicks, planks.
Golovkin is a beast glad you mentioned him. Can you go over how to deal with getting hit in the nose for the first time?
Any: Where's the clap?
Shane: we changed it up. Where have you been?
Lol!
problem is when the palm is down a slight more rotation downward could cause an internal rotation in the shoulder and an increase in shoulder injury.
Ah, ok, so you mean if you do a "russian"/casting hook (palms toward the opponent), it's an even greater risk for your shoulder?
Hey Shane, I just started watching your videos. I don't know if you already did a video regarding how to fight a Southpaw if you are Orthodox or vice-versa. I only saw the boxing playlist so I'm not sure if you already did this video. Thanks.
you got my sub for just mentioning G fam
good stuff man
hey shane,
recently i broke my wrist and i'm woundering how i could best retain my form trough this injury
Not only that, during the old times the gloves have a white circle on them to get points, I am not sure whether its palm in or down but one of it is to show the judge if you hit the person directly on the white circle you score a point
Please do a video on what advantages can people have in a street fight.
Hey fight tips I've been in a few fights over the years and I've broken my hand twice, same hand, looking forward idk how im gonna be Able to defend myself with glass hands, I don't have the guts to hit sometime with a palm strike, both times I broke it throwing an overhand left maybe youve got done tips on the proper way its done
Hi Fight Tips greetings from the Philippines my personal preference of throwing a hook is I never throw with my palm facing me or the ground I meet halfway at my knuckles are pointed at 45 degree angle I would like to get your opinion on that
Hey could you list all mma and boxing sports from most to least dangerous
Using GGG as reference proves you know your stuff. Got my sub. 👍
What u say makes sense, I do the opposite though because I am more comfortable and feel I can leash more power like that. So for me thumb down close by and thumb up from afar
Like for the man, Ant!
*CONOR McGLORIOUS* 😁
i will never unsubscribe to fight tips
Shane please answer many people say that if the palm facing me it is wrong in a match and I will get -2 point!?
there's also another type of hook where the palm is facing the opponent. (like the karate roundhouse punch)
In the beginning one should use palm strikes to the head and fists to the body until you condition your knuckles to hit hard things.
shane, I'm fine with facing down with my left but with my right I feel a slight hurt to my wrist, what's wrong with that
Can you make a video on what to do when someone charges you? and when to take the first punch.
he has a video about the first punch
The other day sparring I tried to do a bully rush and just smother a smaller guy all he did was circle and teep my stomach, I couldn't get it on him at all.but that's in sparring I'm not sure how it would be in full street fight setting
Front kick to his ugly-ass face :)
What is someone tackles you from behind? How do you get him off?
Hey Shane , how would you fight somebody that is heavier than you ?
thanks Shane...
Can you give tips on parrying punches?
Hey Shane what's knuckles for the Palm in Hook?
Shane, how do you block a sidekick?
Hey Shane I've literally heard this explanation but in the opposite way that if it's going to be close it's Palm down and that if it's further away it's Palm in the reason for that being what I was told but I see where you're coming from this is just what I was told over the years that Palm down further out you'll hit with the pinky knuckle and break your wrist and palm in further out cuz you'll hit with the knuckles outside cuz the knuckles are facing further out towards the opponent and I'll act more like a scrape if you're wanting to do a long hook but with that being said like you said it's definitely just a personal preference this is not a knock on what you're saying this is just a different thing I've noticed is it literally that being a personal preference as well someone's explanation versus yours
I've been boxing training and sparring my whole life and I agree with you (left hook is my best punch).
Close is palm down. Further away palm in.
Shain will your Buddy Ant Take you In a One on one Fight ???? OR Sparing match???
Man...I'm more focused on your sick combos in the background
Can you explain the same thing about elbows?
I agreed
Golden age muay legend (very good puncher) Chatchai Sasakul throws the hook always with his palm faced down if i observed him right. What do you think about that ? :) check him out
Got any tips for wrestling guys who have like 120 lbs on you?
Shane you are awesome 😘
Had to like because of that annotation about Ant
I like throwing the hook the exact same way you do for the exact same reasons. However it seems like primarily the pro boxers do it the opposite way with palm down when in tight and Palm facing you when out. Why do you think that is ?
Because when there in close they throw a real short shot unlike when there throwing looping hooks ...u can put ur body into it but its more of an arm punch so u need ur bicep to scoop ur punch through so that's why it's easier to have ur palm facing ur face for the looping hooks .... But the hook is mainly for short shots in the pocket when ur angling around ur opponents and it's easier for u to use ur rhythm and use the shift of ur weight an the turn over from ur hips when ur palms facing the ground also doin it this way telegraphs less because alls u really have to do is turn ur arm over kinda like a corkscrew ur arm from gaurding ur face directly to a 90 degree angle an throw ur hips into it...for this shot it should b landed wit ur arm at a 90 degree angle the more ur arm goes away from ur face the less power u r goin to ultimately have..words do not do it justice what I'm trying to say but trust me I have years on years of experience I'm more jus here to c what other fighters r up to
Like i do boxing and I could handle myself if it was a 1v1 but minor to sure about a gang attack
if i hook to the body its palm down. i end up hitting (mostly) with my first two knuckles. das jus me though
Question I thought if you don't hit with your palms down it's an illegal punch in boxing at least
I've been taught both
then what is a open glove faul in boxing
Nice is ant back for good fighttip wasn't the same without him
Damn. Shane with the long hair. Represent
I prefer palm down because i can dig in with my middle knuckle and the pain is focused on one small area rather than spreading the pain with a larger surface area which is the entire fist.
Ma son Ant. 💪
What the...expertboxing's channel says the opposite, palm down hitting at close distances, palm facing you for longer, which makes more sense with hitting cleanly in terms of knuckle placement
Who is that person he mentioned at 1:01?
does ant do any material arts?
ant,shane,s best and reliable partner
Teach how to do an uppercut
Throwing it face down makes me feel as if I'm going to break my wrist
Palm down is better for head and neck while up is great for ribs
I'm new to this channel, but what credential does Shane have to give boxing/fighting advice? Is he a professional boxer?
i believe he was a pro fighter in thailand and an amature boxer, but very well rounded he know his stuff!
he's qualified to teach. he has few videos if his fights. check them out.
Shin Sanity he is proficient in muay thai and boxing. He has been training for his whole life.
How can I condition my knuckles
Hahaha! Dude, you always look sooooo loaded.
difference between hook and haymaker
so both?
Correct way to drop somone ( not punching or kicking) jus throws and trips
why not see people throw Palm down hook to punch bag, that's question always confused me??
What I was taught, its palm turn down throwing the hook the white part on the glove gotta make contact.. Bc the the amateurs, the ref would warn you about it throwing the other way. Trust me I know I got a point taking away doing that...
Fucking shane are you reading my mind? Every time I ask myself something like last video on how to jump from the floor to a standing position you make a video about it, XD fucking love your channel
I just watched another video and he said never throw a left hook with ur palm facing u ..wtf
My pref. Palm in for close range, palm down for longer ranges.
Aww, poor Ant.
I feel like palm sideways is a better habit to get into. Not only because hooks come from all angles. Up, down, chopping, from the side, etc... not only that but the leverage when the palm is down tends to be lessened... in my opinion.. it gives guys the tendency to get too tall and off balance when throwing the palm down hook. However palm facing in... leverage from many angles. My opinion
I believe the way you face your palm depends on what range you like to throw your hooks.. If your close, palms towards you. If your at medium range, palms down. If your long range, palms away from you. If you favor throwing hooks from close range then have palms towards you.
Personally I like to throw hooks from medium range which makes me palms down, I use tight uppercuts at close range and use jabs + crosses at long range. Though I do have my palms towards me when throwing a shovel hook to the liver.
Fighttips also says the same thing at at ua-cam.com/video/bQMoKGd5OI0/v-deo.html
@@sayto_00 I love the palm away from you hook, like the "russian" hook/casting hook, and yes, this one seems to have the best reach.I do it often, nearly every day in training. Do you feel it in your shoulder/rotator cuff?I read that there is a risk of shoulder injury with this hook.
when i throw the left hook with my palm facing downwards it hurts my thumb..can anyone tell me why?
Scott, maybe it's the way you clench your fist, or maybe you are over reaching, for me the 90 degree bend on my elbow is my most powerful position.
We missed ant!
Does Shane reply to comments?
Yes, but he gets thousands of comments per video, so he can't answer every single one unfortunately.
pum there he is, pum.
What do you do if there's a group attacking you
there are videos on that
Tell them that Chuck Norris answered your question once on youtube. They're not gonna mess with you.
hey bro, imagine you're 12 years old and the other guy have 15 for exemple, what you think and what you gonna do ?
If you punch with knuckles facing down there's very little power, and can hurt your shoulder. If you punch with palms facing you, there's much more power! And you don't need to have your elbows higher than your hand, That's over using your shoulder. Power comes from hips & legs.
Shane*
i thought it was the other way, palm in for reaching further and palm down for tighter hooks
Thomas Bigalow, Palm in is for tighter hooks because your elbows are closer/tighter to your body, whereas palms down flares your elbows up and out more.
Thomas Bigalow palm in for close range, palm down for mid range, palm out for long range. i have heard many call them the american hook and english hook respectively (the 3rd is sometimes called a chinese hook). no single method is the right method, like shane says its more about aligning your knuckles to fit the range of the hook.
Jinarchy like he said how ever your comfortable throwing not many fighter throw both variations no matter what range there they throw which is is natural for them
Thomas Bigalow that’s what I do it feels weird to have your palm facing you, a tight hook feels a lot better and tighter for me palm facing down and for more reach turn my palm towards me
Jon but u know what, the way u described it makes alot of sense the farther the hook the outer your palm is to make the elbow lift to that 90° if I make sence
I like throwing my hooks better with the palm facing down because I could throw it in with my elbow
shane is the best
If you don't mind a small suggestion. I mean no disrespect, your show is great. But every time, Just before you sign off, say " U want to be good? Hit the bag 500 times A-day, every day."
Fyi, I've been doing it for over 40 years. I still have a good hard right, and a good hard left. I'm 68 and never had Knuckle, Shoulder or wrist problems. Oh yeah the best part, it only takes around 5 minutes or less.
Again your show is awesome.
Triple G!
HOLY SHIT! ANT!!!!!
The thing about palm down is that you are more likely to get a boxers fracture compared to a palm in.
Nope other way around
palm down hurts my thumb for some reason.
Heres a small experiment. Rest your fist palm down against a wall. You can feel most of the tension in the middle knuckle. Now rest your fist in a vertical position against the wall. You can feel most of the tension in your middle knuckle and the last two knuckles, the ring and pinky knuckles. Without gloves, you are better with the palm face down, but you also sacrifice power for protection against fractures with the palm down. It is still preference
So yesterday when I punched a guy I realized the palm facing me is my preferred method of punching.
The best way to test a strike is to just hit some random civilian, preferably and old lady
@@liamwebster6528 olay this fight was definitely 2 years ago youtube has lost its touch because I had lager switched to palm facing down haha

This guy looks like the biggest goober 😂
Br uh(get it bruh).....sometimes i give a goober look, but i'm not a goober....well maybe sometimes. Ima get me some goobers now bruh.
Shane, there is one more...
DIAGONAL. Meaning, the hand is between those two that you showed.
Fedor was also turning his hand slightly inside.
If you punch without gloves and you hit your opponent with only the two knuckles, you might break them.
Is aikido good for street fighting
Its better than nothing
I'm afraid Marie won't be too happy about that LOL.
because im a 2 dan belt on aikido but barely get in fight s
+ yeah
My coach tells me to throw them palm in when they're far. And to throw them palm down when they're close. But i prefer palm in most of the time.
That was my thoughts too. My coach told me the same thing, but I usually throw palm in or "stirring the pot" as he calls it, because your hand is in a similar angle to the angle it would be at if you were stirring a pot.
MrKinggodzilla my coach says the same thing! "Stirring the pot"
You got ur coach why are you watching youtube vids
