Great videos, Shane. I don't belong to a gym or anything; just boxing for fitness. Your videos are a huge help. I like how you break the biomechanics down and make it easy for beginners like me to practice proper form.
I know this was 5 years ago but I’m glad you mentioned the turning of the foot when you come in for that left hook. You can generate the same amount of power without turning the foot, as long as you turn your hips. Great advise 👍
i recently started with muay thai. its fun and addicting but also frustrating at times when youre annoyed with your own failures, but your videos are a huge help and motivation for me. thanks for that.
I just wanted to thank you for posting such informative, concise and well-made videos. I have been living and trainnig in Japan for 15+ years and I share your videos with everyone at the gym...of course I need translate them but you are getting quite popular here! Keep up the excellent work!
Thank you very much for this post! In my fitness class I see now what I’m doing wrong and why it hurts! For my next class I’m going to take it easy, use proper form, even if they’re yelling for me to pick up the pace 😅 I really want to do it correctly and let my arms and shoulders heal from what I was doing incorrectly!
The turning hand when hook punching from too far away actually came to me instinctively it wasn't until I watched this video is when I realised it! Your body really adapts when it knows how it wants to hit
I've been trying to get into boxing recently but since I'm a 19 year old college student I haven't really had the time or money to take classes so videos like this have been really helpful, thanks for the great content. Also, really cute dog.
Shane!! This little serious of common mistakes has helped me so much! I can't afford to attend the gym I use to for muay thai. So I've been working on getting better at my universities gym. The kicking mistakes really helped me out, I saw improvements almost instantly with technique and power. Thanks and please keep them coming!
Thankyou so much, very useful, my hooks were always feeling awkward and slow in comparison to my straight shots, but I instantly improved my hooks using this video
Great video! It helped me to better understand things I do automatically and take for granted so that I can better communicate those to my students, and I picked up a couple details on the ranged hook that I hadn't thought about before. Thanks!
This is super helpful. I'm planning to get into FitXR for the Oculus Quest, but after watching some reviews I noticed one reviewer say the game doesn't have a good tutorial on proper form. Decided to do my own research and it led me here. Thanks for the tips!
The dog are probably the grand master, and he saw you doing something wrong. Dog:"Hold this, let me teach him some moves" Those are some good tips, and I didn't knew about the rotating your first when further is the distance.Nice video, man.
Shane. I like how you make new learner aware of their mistakes and give idea to do it correctly. Love you and God bless you and your family. Keep blossoming like rose. Well wisher from Phoenix, Arizona.
Thanks Shane. I've been subscribe to you for a long time until recently I've started boxing and muay Thai and I've learnt that all your videos are very precious to me.
I'm the wrong side of 40,working a punch pad I made out in the yard to keep me supple and mobile. I've got the jab Cross down with nice quick retraction to guard, but my lead hook sucks big time. My footwork is all wrong. I keep relying on stepping into the punch but it's the wrong body mechanics for the job. I've even tried slip and counter with hook like Mike tyson but I'm no iron Mike. I'm going to watch this video over and over, then work on putting my hips into the lead hook. Thank you Shane for making this video. Its been a blessing for me and I look forward to improving my lead hook 😁👍
Love how you get right to it in second 1.!!! Don't like videos that spend 2 minutes telling you what they are about to do !!! Love all the tips and great to see your success with this channel !
Seriously homie, I'm a dog lover, I am so distracted by your dog in the beginning. I wanna jump down to the floor and play with him!! But I love your content, keep up the great work!!
Really appreciate these videos, Ik you posted it Hella long ago but as someone who can't pay for boxing lessons yet it's really nice just to get some practice before hand
Could you please do a video on weight training and martial arts? I see some things about only doing calisthenics so you don't get bulky and you can be more agile, or to not go up weight classes, but then I see some ufc guys benching and deadlifting and stuff. I want to know what I should do to prepare myself for mma when I start at the local one.
Great video for beginners, I didn’t learn anything from the video that I didn’t already know, besides maybe that I didn’t need to pivot the back foot on the cross, Pivoting that foot on the cross at this point for me is not something I ever even come close to thinking about, but I know I do it. I believe it though, makes sense that you don’t have to do it, I always kind of felt people over analyze that twisting part, cigarette-outting thing, it’s probably just a cue for beginners as you said. But this would have been very helpful for me when I started so many years ago, so despite not learning anything I at least know this is a good channel now. Keep up the good work, you’re a good teacher.

Hey Shane, What do you think of throwing a hook with the palm down, anything wrong with it? I was taught that it's safer for your wrist that way. I sprained my wrist throwing it the traditional way when my fist was wasn't flush on the bag and slipped against the bag and jammed my wrist.
Eric Goldstein he literally explains this in the video. He said he likes to go palm down if he’s at a further distance, and palm in if it’s close, and if it’s really damn far then he likes to turn it completely over like a fedor/chuck Liddell overhand. It depends on you. Do whatever you like best for now.
outstanding, thank you. that also solved the mystery of seeing mma guys throw that strange looking long range hook. now it makes sense why they turn it over so much. very cool
A few questions I have: 1. Is it ok to drop the hand I'm doing the punch with to generate more power? I tend to naturally do this but it seems to not slow me down. 2. Where should the punch stop?
45th President of The United States of America (1) test it out in sparring. If you can still land things without it compromising your defence why not (2) go 'through' the target but ensure to return to guard. I like to think of punches as like whips. They don't go through targets then linger, they snap right back
ok i misread but still no u should not dropping your hand takes up more time and leaves u open for counters and other attacks when u punch it's not about power all the time more about speed Shane has posted lots of videos about this go search up like "fighttips is power better than speed" or something
Shiraz Hussain what’s funny is I just thought he looked like my friend (who’s passed away recently so maybe this is a contributing kind of.. biased factor, since you know, they say when a good friend dies you’ll kind of see their faces everywhere) but that friend I thought he resembled, I used to say he looked like the way Anakin from the clone wars cgi show looked.

I think your doggie was trying to cut in and get you to play ball with him LOL, cute dog oh, we had one of those in our family, beautiful dog God bless...
Yeah, that's a real common injury here on the internet Just be glad you're not one of the guys who 'went to the ground', because that's where they stayed. Not that _exact_ same piece of ground, obviously, unless they just happened to be fighting in a cemetery not far from one of their homes. Extremely unlikely.
Love your dog! He distracted me several times! Had to rewind parts of your video several times because of that! I melt for beautiful dogs! He was barking cause his toy ball was between your feet. He was like move it! Lol! Excellent content by the way!
Shane you the man. I’d love to train w you!! You’re a gifted instructor!!! Martial arts has helped me w my addictions so I really want to go full force into it ASAP.
I like how you don’t bring your hand away back like some people do. That never generates power. All from the hip rotation. Bringing your hand back where you no longer can see it gives your opponent the advantage as they can see your hand and when you can’t. Best to keep it where you can see it. Form creates the power
Great vid again. I think you should also mention how, when practicing hooks on the heavy bag, you shouldn't punch on the side of the bag. Not only does that mess up your shoulder but also no one's head is that big.

I sprained my wrist throwing it the traditional way when my fist was wasn't flush on the bag and slipped against the bag and jammed my wrist.
Eric Goldstein won't that hurt your wrist more because it puts your arm in an awkward positions and reduce the power of the hook a bit
