  • There's a good reason why the jab is the first punch you will learn in boxing: because it should be your BEST punch! It exerts the least amount of energy, acts as a probe, dictates the range, and sets up combos.

      Not really, elbows can be slow and they're hard to manuever with full accuracy. Only throw counter elbows, if you counter someone's jab with a ducked jab of your own, your head is in position for a spinning elbow.

    Man, I LOVE your videos. You really know what you're talking about. I've been a boxer for 6, almost 7 years now and in my free time I thumb through your vids just to cherry pick on some of your advice. The only thing I wanted to bring up was something you said at the end of mistake 2 when you mentioned those guys who complain of elbow pain from throwing jabs. I was expecting you to bring it up but it was overlooked. One of the most common causes of elbow pain from throwing jabs is not utilizing the corkscrew effect when throwing them. Not only does it exert more power when throwing your jab or right cross, but it also eliminates any snap on your elbow when it's thrown. Likewise, when you use the corkscrew effect it also causes your shoulder to rotate upward, guarding your chin and leaving you less exposed to a counter strike if they telegraph the jab, circle right (or left if you're a southpaw) where your chin would be exposed otherwise. Other than that little interjection, I have NOTHING negative to say about what you do here on youtube. You're a fantastic boxer and martial artist all around. Keep up the great work man!

      limbs naturally spiral on extension. Stopping the spiral is unnatural and therefore tensioning on incorrect muscles. Results in reduction in speed and injuries. Free natural flow is the way.

    • @resedent2009
      @resedent2009 5 років тому

      kai I don’t understand why you think the shoulder and radius/Ulna naturally internally rotate during extension of the elbow? The wrist flexors, pec group, internal rotator cuff etc. don’t fire automatically during elbow extension/shoulder flexion

    Hey, Shane.
    Elbow pain with the jab is real. I'm a tall dude with long-ass arms so I was struggling with that a lot.
    What I found is when you rotate your wrist during the jab so your thumb points down towards the floor then the joints align and your shoulder comes naturally upwards to the side of your face, so you don't eat a hook. The jab becomes powerful and stable, no pain. Same goes for the cross.
    Thanks for the video.

    Just to add:
    A solution for elbow pain in the jab is to rotate the fist more. This prevents popping the elbow at full extension. Once enough experience is obtained, this will not be an issue with or without fist rotation as the student's body adjusts to the jab and it becomes natural.
    Great video!

    Watch George St. Peirre's(ufc) double jab. It's fantastic, you can bring the power punch, elbow, shoot or kick off off of it depending on the response you see. Always keep your opponent guessing.

    I've struggled with most of these with my left jab ever since I've started boxing, making it difficult to get any follow-ups, especially the telegraphing. I've recently switched to southpaw because of it, and my sparring has drastically improved

    Personally I've always found jabs are most effective when using a recently broken in half pool cue.
    (More so if complimented with a witty one-liner like a "I'll put this ONE in your corner pocket" or "Let's CHAULK that one up to assault with a deadly weapon" or "Do you bleed? You wi...OH GOD PLEASE DONT SHOOT ME"

    Good job with Jab lesson. I trained world Champs... old man now but it is good to see the sport is thriving. I also hold 3 martial arts Black belts but there was no mixed when I was Champ NJ, AAU, Police Athletic League, Mid Heats, and Golden glove NJ. Trained with Bobby Czyz and other top ranked fighters. Most of the time they teach the jab wrong, but you are right on. Keep up the lessons, right hand left hook uppercut etc. looking forward....
