If you are pressing a number down that is part of the combination you should feel feedback on the open button. If you are pressing a number that is NOT in the combination you should feel nothing on the open button. You could open the box with your bare hands but the pen just makes it so much easier to get the feedback in my experience.

I found a flathead just above the top mechanism works just a good. 2 strikes with the hammer and its open!
