The thing about quilting is that you get to make it your own! You choose the pattern, the fabric, the method etc.. Beautiful job Janelle! I know self binding is way easier, but most of my quilt binding is made out of the scraps from the quilt. It's just a different look, and the beauty of creativity is we get to choose the look that works for us 😊❤️
it turned out so lovely and the hand quilting is so charming! its really interesting how different sewing a quilt is from garment sewing even though it uses a lot of the same tools! both are so satisfying in different ways!
Great video! BTW, the process of cutting, sewing each quilt blocks is called PIECING and the process of sandwiching the 3 layers together is called QUILTING. Your design & fabric choice is beautiful.
That quilt is incredible! Sometimes I think "I could do that" but my disability would make it more challenging, more painful and take twice as long. Our guest room is about to get a guest but he doesn't care about pretty quilts, he's a gamer nerd just like my husband ( that's how they met almost 20 years ago).
Beautiful quilt! If you make another quilt, you might enjoy big stitch binding! You machine sew the binding to the front, and then flip it back and hand stitch to the back. There are different kinds of decorative hand stitches you can do as well. It ends up looking ultra clean on the front but has that handmade touch on the back.
I love your quilt Janelle, thanks for taking us along. I've been quilitng for 2 decades and have noticed quilts with self binding that are well used and loved will show signs of wear eventually as this style of binding is not very sturdy over time. So don't give up on finishing your quilts with bias cut seam binding. Please give up a peek of your guest room when it is all done up, I love your style!
I hope my op shop still has that quilting book I left there last week! I just started a new craft with the knitting books I found there 😅 So many beautiful crafts to try! That quilt is so gorgeous Janelle! Well done! ✨
This came out so beautifully. I am also a big fan of hand quilting because I love the texture so I was so glad when you said about the puffiness of the handquilted blanket. I really love the final result of the stars all together, but its kind of a shame that they get lost in one another. Still beautiful and amazing. Just this past year I have been quilting like mad so it is so wonderful to see someone else enjoying it too!
This is so beautiful 😍 I really want to try this now! It would be so cool if you could try making a patchwork dress like the one from little cottonwood! ❤️
Beautiful quilt, & looks really lovely on your guest room bed. You’re brave to include gingham as quilts are traditionally made using only quilting cotton, but you seem to have made it work well in this quilt. And well done with your hand quilting. Yes quilting is VERY addictive! I suspect your quilting life is only just beginning! Regarding binding, you either love it or hate it. I personally enjoy the process & often handsew mine on, whilst watching tele. Looking forward to seeing more of your quilts in the future. 😊
Wow! It's beautiful! A definite heirloom piece. I've know quilters that had sewn a reference block onto the back of their quilts - info on who made it, when and where it made.
Janelle, as everything you do, this quilt is amazing! I'm learning how to crochet now, and I feel as you do, enjoying rhe process without feeling pressured. I've been making a blanket for my Mom for Mother's day. But I have tons of fabric here to start doing something fun. I think I'll start with a pillow and then, I could make a quilt as you did. Let's see.... Enjoy your beautiful quilt , and have a wonderful weekend! Cheers feom Brazil!❤🇧🇷🤍🩵💛💚
Hi Janelle, its a sawtooth star block (just one of the ways you can refer to the design, there are MANY) and you can also make it using half squar triangles! Don't worry about using different types of fabrics. In the early days of the US, quilts were made with whatever fabric was available or wasted. It could be a moxture of dress fabric, an old necktie, or food bags. They held up just fine. Stitch density is far more important than fabric weave.
I love finding joy from new crafts. I've taken up crochet as I've become far too ill to sew garments, and I love it! I collect certain plush toys as a hobby and it's been so satisfying to make some of my own and just enjoying the process 🥰 Also crochet is so much less pressure, no $200 special liberty fabric I cut incorrectly or didn't do the meticulous fitting right and I'm left with something unwearable! 😅
Something I've been collecting over the years is bedsheets from the 70s and 80s. I love the colors and patterns and the fabric is extremely soft. Now I am thinking that I could try making a quilt! I'd want to have more than 3 different fabrics though. It might turn out a little crazy, but I'm okay with that.
i am always floored by quilters, and this make is no exception! ive been working on a quilt that was left to me, and it has been such a fun challenge puttin it together
Well done and looks good! I feel like it's a bit sad that the star design disappears a bit once it's all together. But the prints work so nicely together 😊
I love this so much. It is beautiful! I have a quilt project planned and got stuck at choosing what fabric to use for each part. I need to pull finger and just go for it! Thanks for inspiring me x
Wow, its gorgeous. I would love to give that a go one day. I have some beautiful toffee coloured linen fabric to make one of your dresses hopefully soon. 😊
You inspire me in so many ways. I absolutely love and admire your "me-made" wardrobe and how cohesive (remember project runway?) Your fabric selection is. The quilt pattern is fun to look at. I love how many different shapes are created from this pattern and the colors are put together in a pleading way! It looks great on your bed. Definitely a fan of hand quilting. I'm itching to get sewing, but have a few obstacles to overcome before I can get into that. Meanwhile I'm knitting my first couple of sweaters and crocheting a sample for the yarn store, and a darling amigurami elephant from an Etsy shop pattern. I always have dozens of projects going. 🤪😀. I don't do yarn crafts so much in the summer. More sewing, more yardwork. Thanks for sharing! Take care!!
This was such a good video!! Its really inspired me to finally have a go at making a quilt. Its been on my list for so long and now I’m definitely going to go for it ❤
Absolutely beautiful..wow!...I can see that becoming a family heirloom..and it doesn't have to be 'perfect'...you are so pleased with it and that's all that matters...I love patchwork quilts..haven't made one for absolutely years but I'm now feeling inspired..fantastic..well done..always a joy watching you sew..Jxx 🌺🇬🇧💐🐾🐈👩🏼🦯🐕🐕🐕🐾🙏⚘🙏
As someone who is quilting for the first time ever after years of watching the women in my family sew your quilt is amazing and always a beginner squares way to go, I made that rookie mistake and made a pattern that wasn't square. It stressed me out so much, Amazing video Janelle!!
Thank you so much for the video. I have been currently working on some embroidered towels for my kitchen, but I have fell into a slump. Your video helped inspire me to keep going with projects for the home, and now I can’t wait to do more like quilts for my house. Love the quilt, it is absolutely gorgeous.
Fantastic quilt, it looks great. I love how the secondary pattern was a nice surprise for you. Self-binding is definitely my preferred method too. Really enjoy your fashion makes but finding your quilts here too is great bonus.
Thank you for sharing this!!! Been wondering how I am going to do the borders of the quilts I’m working on, now I have a definite answer! And your quilt turned out AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL!
that quilt is adorably amazing. I've had a quilt all pieced together and I've been putting off doing the backing and batting together and binding for years now... but that way of binding seems so easy!! maybe I can do it that way... definitely have more inspiration to actually finish it now!
Hi Janelle. What a beautiful quilt you made. I love it. Also the black gingham dress that you are wearing in one of the clips is stunning. Do you have a video on how you made that? I really want to make one like that.
This exact pattern (look) can be done with strip quilting. It's faster, more concise, and less fabric waste. The only difference is where the fabric is cut and sewn... from an untrained eye, the quilt appears exactly the same. You should be able to look up the pattern name and "strip quilting" together to find how to do it. I love your fabric choices. To account for the stripes...or directional fabric, you could have switched places with the print fabric so you have a larger uncut piece of the gingham and smaller cuts of the print where direction isn't as important. As a quilter, I've made quilts with mismatched fabric weights....best thing to do is to wash and dry fabrics first to adjust for shrinking, fabric tightening, and fabric twisting. Looks beautiful... I love it P.S. when quilting, it's best to pick a pattern that crosses your seams rather than stitching in the ditch. This is a quilt and quilts get handled roughly when washing, drying, making the bed, and sleeping...always best to pick a pattern to support your seam...you could have stitched corner to corner..."×" and "+" in the squares. It won't detract from your quilt pattern and it will strengthen it to last for years to come
It's so gorgeous Janelle!! I love the design and the colours you chose and I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I am about to embark on my first proper quilt so it was very timely for me :)
Well done Janelle! Such a lovely quilt! Love the end product in the colours you used. Quilting really is addictive. 😊. I finished one yesterday. With the old fashioned machine then hand binding method. Happy creating ❤
Oh wow, it’s so beautiful! 😍 I think that’s my favourite quilt pattern and your fabric choices were perfect for it. I have always wanted to make a quilt and now I think I’m finally going to! Especially with the self binding method - that is genius and SO much easier. Thanks for sharing, I loved this video and hope you make more quilts in future! 💖
You could have bordered each block, and not lost the star design. However, you would have lost the secondary design you now have. That is one of the cool things about quilts. So many possibilities!

It’s crazy how different the process is for both, but yeah I agree both just as satisfying 😍
Great video! BTW, the process of cutting, sewing each quilt blocks is called PIECING and the process of sandwiching the 3 layers together is called QUILTING. Your design & fabric choice is beautiful.
Such a lovely quilt . Well done. As anquilter with 30 years experience ,Im impressed with your work.
Aw thanks! That really means a lot 🧡

Oh Janelle you're so talented! What a beautiful quilt.
Thank you so much! 🧡
So beautiful! Well done! If you want to make blocks quicker, next time try chain piecing one stage at a time. It goes much faster. 😊 Awesome work!
It’s so beautiful! I’ve got a new quilt idea in my head and now you’ve inspired me to start 💞
Ooh I can’t wait to see 😍
Thank you for talking through the process of self binding, this is going to save my sanity in future!
Enjoyed watching your personalized quilt expression. I may try again making a quilt.
I really need to make a quilt. Been meaning to make one for my dog to sleep on in my bed. You’re inspiring me to give it a try.
Janelle, your Quilt is beautiful . Colours are go so well together. Thanks for showing us how to bind the edge too. 😊
I think that this quilt is beautiful! You did such an amazing job. Thank you for sharing ❤.

I can't unsee the square in a square blocks.☺️
@@robinr6399 it's like an optical illusion!!!! The beauty of quilting. Amazing work janelle
❤lovely quilt. Love the pattern.
Great job.
I prefer self-binding to using bias tape. I use that method in garments, bags and other items that have layers. Quilt is lovely :)
love your quilt. is gorgeous love colors! i am really inspired to make one gorgeous my grandson! congrats 🎉
You inspire me to finish my quilt!😂❤

I think you’ve inspired me to make a queen size patch work quilt. In the past I’ve made a few cot quilts from printed panels for new babies.
It's wonderful! The colour and fabric palette unmistakably pronounces: "Janelle made this!" It's totally you, and it's totally gorgeous 😍
Aw thanks so much! 🧡
Awesome job using seersucker fabric! ❤
I loooove love love it. You look so happy and pretty wrapped in it :)

The quilt looks so lovely and homely! I’d never heard of the self binding method but it looks so much easier so will definitely try that next time!
It turned out very nice!❤

You made an absolutely beautiful quilt Janelle. Well done! I've made three in my life. Two were made with Japanese fabric purchased in Melbourne.

Thanks so much Kylie! I’m so proud of it 🥰
So pretty! Quilts are so fun to choose coordinating fabrics, like an outfit for the room. Well done!😻

Aw thank you! Yes I totally recommend you have a go at quilting. It was such a calming project to work on over the last few months ☺️
The quilt colours look fantastic, Janelle. 😊
Honestly BRAVO!!!!!!
Thank you!! 🧡
Stunning quilt! Love it.
Absolutely fab! I am so keen to follow this inspiration. I wondered how much fabric you needed to make a queen size in the end?
That’s a different technique I’ve not seen before ❤❤
Omg love your quilt. Now I want to make one too! I also love your dress. I have the pattern and now I want to make that too😂😊❤
You could have bordered each block, and not lost the star design. However, you would have lost the secondary design you now have. That is one of the cool things about quilts. So many possibilities!
Woo hoo!
I love it! You’ve inspired me ❤
Its gorgeous!!!❤❤😊😊
Thank you! 🧡
it looks great ✨
Beautiful!!😍
Great binding tip 😊
Brilliant!
Well done.
Looks amazing!!
It's beautiful
Congratulations.
Thank you for this lovely video! Is there a link to the ruler you used in this video?
This quilt is gorgeous! I am thinking of giving it a go. What size fabrics did you purchase before cutting?
It looks so gorgeous! 😍
What happend with the gingham triangles you had to cut off? Could you still use them for the quilt?
