- Upgraded my 4.0L 04 grand cherokee with a ford explorer Manual fan (11 blade). AC works better at idle and my temperature never passes 210 degrees. 100% recommend this fan over the stock OEM fan!

Had a long road trip and got hot on me my 99 grand Cherokee, swapped out the fan as you said, it worked perfectly. thanks
I did this on my jeep grand cherokee wj 2004 , works like a dream
I love you for this one 🙆🏻♂️
Bought a 2001 Ford Explorer 4.0 fan blade and clutch and they pit perfectly! Fixed all my problems! Thank you SIR!
C Gman Nice!
So a Ford Explorer fan clutch will fit fine on a 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0? Another question do you need to remove the electror fan too or you can put both fan together? Thanks
Yes the clutch and fan fit fine! Don't worry about removing the electric fan. I had to work the clutch and fan past the fan shroud separately and then bolted them together before screwing on to the water pump shaft. Make sure to get a loaner water pump wrench to tighten the clutch as much as possible. Go do it! I have been driving around summer heat in CA with no problem since the upgrade.
You can leave the electric fan in. However, I would remove it for optimal airflow. I do not have the electric fan in, and I tow a 3000lbs camper trailer every now and then.
I did try a Ford fan clutch it almost over heat my engine.. junk
like you video got tired of my jeep 4.o running hot like that to .bought fan clutch autozone and fan think i bought on amazon was 120.oo.now my jeep runs nice n cool .left my electric fan in though .somthing jeep should have done themselves i think.maybe the tow package has both i hear something like that .anyway like your set up also.
That's awesome what you have done here. I assume you have probably seen either my videos on the ZJ fan upgrade, my thread on JeepForum, or both. The 11-blade Explorer fan seems to look like a good fit on that one, though since WJs have a 20 inch shroud, your fan options are much better than the ZJ V8. You can use a 19 inch fan on that. They can be found on vehicles such 1999 or later Chevy trucks, 1997+ Ford F150s, etc. There's a writeup on JeepsUnlimited where a guy added in a GM 11-blade fan to his 4.0L WJ. Those can be found on newer Chevy S10s, Express vans, etc. The good thing about the Explorer fan is that the fan clutch specced for it doesn't stick out so far so that it doesn't hit the electric fan on the WJ.
In regards to the ZJ V8, I no longer use the Explorer 12 blade. Its cooling is not much better than the stock 5-blade. The fan I am running now is the Explorer 10 blade. It's recessed back like the 12-blade, but actually pulls more air than the 12-blade, and almost as much as the 11-blade. I ran the 11-blade on mine last year by using a spacer that's shipped with the Dorman 620-112 fan blade. While this allowed the 11-blade to fit, the fan could work itself out of balance over time as there's nothing there to keep it centered.
You don't want to have too much space between the blade tips and the fan shroud. The Explorer fan is 18 inches, and the WJ shroud is 20 inches. That leaves roughly 1 inch between the blade tips and the shroud. I believe the Explorers have a 20 inch shroud. From the looks of things, your fan seems to be doing well, even with a used fan clutch. The fan clutch you used (assuming it's OEM) is likely a heavy duty unit. It doesn't have quite as much lockup as a severe duty unit. If you notice any cooling issues this summer, switching the fan clutch out for a severe duty one might be an option.
Here's my thread on JeepForum:
www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/original-mechanical-cooling-fan-clutch-upgrade-1993-1998-jeep-zj-v8-3374098/
+Julio Ortiz Yes you likely would have to. If it's working fine for you as it is, then I'd say just leave it on there.
+Julio Ortiz Here's a good writeup on the WJ Grand Cherokee...
www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?496635-Mechanical-fan-upgrade
You'll definitely want to take note of the GM 11-blade used in this writeup.
We have 2 wj grand chrokees, 1 with the 4.0 other is a v8, which fans work best for each as bold up and go ? The heat and humidity is killer here . Thanks.
I’m totally doing this.. I’m tired of always eyeballing the temp gauge at idle. Thanks for the heads up!
If your Efan is still working, try keeping it and install the ford fan. Run both!
Thanks …that’s the plan … see if it fits . Ordered the clutch and fan already LOL!
👍 muy bien gracias
The OEM Bosch Electric Fan motor is actually very good. But, when I changed out my radiator, I figured it was time to put in a new fan motor. However, the Bosch fan motor was no longer available. So, I stuck in a Taiwanese Tyco fan motor that is an exact fit. But, then after about 35,000 miles, the Tyco fan motor fried. Luckily, I kept the old Bosch motor and stuck it back in. I went by a junkyard and got a 2001 mechanical fan setup(I saw this video afterwards) off a 2001 Wrangler. It is all metal and heavy. I have not put it on. I have a auxiliary tranny cooler for pulling a boat. So, besides the OEM Bosch setup, I shoehorned in a small thin pusher electric fan in front of the auxiliary tranny cooler. However, if the reinstalled Bosch OEM fan motor goes out, I will then have to put the Wrangler 4.0 mechanical setup in or get the better Ford Explorer setup. I would then use the the wiring for the Bosch fan on my pusher fan but with wires reversed.
why does the fan sit so close to the radiator it's asking for problems. mine is only about 4 in. off the radiator. electrical fan w tow package 04 wj.
Great choice Julio.
I have an 04 gc 4.7 ho, and i've been trying to locate the fan relay for weeks....most videos show how to cut a hole under the pax. Side headligth...and i did...but there is no relay there on mine...did you ever replaced your relay.? ..and if you did...did you find it..? Thanks!
Antonio Leon I don’t believe the 04s have the relay in the bumper, I think it’s in the engine bay, inside of a fuse box.
There are 2 in the Engine compartment Fuse Box , both are Ford Relays (No Kidding FORD Relays). One is for High Fan and one for Low Fan. Side by side, biggest, at the back of the engine compartment, passenger side. ONLY FOR 2004 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE Model Year. New Jeep idea for 2004 but they didn't make the relay. Find yours and get the Ford part # and look on Ebay, cheap
Because this is for 4.0L , yours should have hydrofan , its a different story , like mine...
Morning from Florida Julio,
So pretty much a fan clutch and blade from a 2001 Ford Explorer? Right? Good fit on threads?
Yes, explore fan and clutch. My clutch came off of a 97.
@@xlightssx Is it a direct fit with no modification?
Nathan Allen Pinard Yes!
What explorer engine?
Works good. I did it for my 2004 Jeep Cherokee special edition and it's running way better. Any other tricks up your sleeve?
Yes I have a new video on a back seat modification. ua-cam.com/video/eJT4v_FfeGc/v-deo.html
What fan shroud did he use
What fan shroud itself to use did he replace the fan shroud and with what
There are two different types of 11-blade fans used on the Explorers and Rangers...
YA220/F87A-8600-EA, found on most 1998-2001 Explorers, 4.0L Rangers (The fan I have experimented with)
YA242/1L24-8600-CA, found on 2002 era Explorer Sport Trac, 2002-up 4.0L Rangers
You can tell these apart by the amount of curve on the front side of the blade. The YA220 has a well pronounced curve in the front side of its blades. The YA242 has a flatter curve.
The YA242 is also 0.5 inches larger in diameter, which makes it a good fit on the WJ Grand Cherokee. The big thing is you don't want any more than one inch of clearance between the blade tip and the shroud. I believe the WJ shroud measures in at 20 inches in diameter. The YA220 11-blade works, but is just big enough. The YA242 would probably be a better fit. From what I was able to see in your video, it looks like you might have the YA242. Since you pulled the fan blade from a 2001 Explorer, that fan may be a replacement if it's the YA242.
+Julio Ortiz You can tell by looking at the blades... pull up an image search on both of the fans and you'll see the difference.

+Julio Ortiz The YA220 is a great fan. It's relatively quiet but pulls a ton of air. I have trimmed the one I had previously tested, so that it doesn't hit the shroud and reinstalled it.
I'm going to do this. '04 GC SE 4.0
Too much BS with the electric setup.
Julio : where are you at ?? you said never passed the 210 F . here in north Texas we deal with 100 - 105 F in the summer . saludotes.
Bien dia! I am in New York. Are you passing 210 when idling?
Did you have to take out your electric fan? I was about to do the 5 blade tow package fan, but after burning through so many relays I would like to try something like this. I just don't think I can get my electric fan out if it needs to go. Any tips on installing the 11 blade fan/clutch? Looks like you just use the 4 bolts (prob with locking washers?) then hand tighten the fan clutch on to the water pump? Thanks!
It's a 2000 Grand/Larado 4.0. Saw people using the 11 blade GM/Murray (Hayden) 2787 clutch so I ordered that yesterday. thinking I can leave the e-fan in as a backup since the clutch clears it...good idea on the shroud since it's gonna be a snug fit. Only reason I've done so much research and getting ideas from people who have done this is because I'm so exhausted from dealing with that e-fan/relay!
I don’t think you have to remove the efan, but I did.
@@xlightssx How is the manual fan powered? Como se hace funcionar el ventilador manual?
douglas flores El ventilador funciona con el motor. La correa hace girar el ventilador. The fan is powered by the engine. The belt turns the fan.
great job did this throw any codes
Holy Spirit no sir.
Hi Mr our country temperature is from 39c to 49c and i live in desert place .
Question is if I replace ford explorer fan do you think i need to install an aux electric fan with or not .
Not, you don’t need electric fan with the ford fan. Only one fan.
Julio Ortiz will the fan come on/turn on automatic once the car turns on everytime
2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee solution how to fix
did you get your fan from a 6cyl or an 8 cyl ?
John Sheehan 6cyl
Julio entonces busco un fan clutch. Y abanico de explorer 2001 tengo una 2004 gran cherokee laredo 4.0 gracias
Si
Does the check engine light come often because the relay is no longer operating?
Not in my case.
Will that work on a 90 xj Cherokee?
I already changed thermostat, water pump, radiator, hoses, head gasket. It over heats on idle but not on highway
I don’t know, sorry. Try finding both Ford Explorer’s 11 and 12 blade fans, and see which one will work.
Change the fan clutch if you have one?
Is it still working good for you? I'm having the same issue
Abel Castillo yes!
whats the part # 4 the 12 blade fan - have a 96 Grand Cherokee with a 4.0L
I am not sure. Sorry :(
Did it just plug into the factory wiring harness?
It’s not electric, it’s a belt driven fan. And yes, it a direct fit.
Julio Ortiz did you already have a clutch fan? I do not have one, I have an 04 wj with an electric fan
WJ Life my wj was electric. The clutch fan will bolt on to the water pump. Easy job with great results.
Will this work for a 4.7 v8?
I think so, but try using the 12 blade. www.jeepgarage.org/threads/2004-wj-4-7-ho-off-with-the-hydraulic-fan-and-in-with-the-mechanical-fan.216241/
@@xlightssx did you use a different water pump and what about the power steering pump lines?
@@commongunowner2173 i used the original water pump and the power steering lines were not in the way. i recommend keep both the e-fan & the manual fan for those that live in hotter climates. Also reduce your antifreeze mix to a 30/70 ratio and add a bottle of hyperlube super coolant (Hot climates only).
Has anyone tried this on a 4.7?

This link should help
it's way better to buy a new fan clutch from a 2002 Explorer and the 11 blade fan
Christian Carrillo this is true, but the clutch looked brand new when I pulled it off the 97. The fan and clutch together costed me 20 dollars. And it runs smooth and great.
@@xlightssx : so, you just removed the fan clutch nut and that's it.
??? Same size, same threads???
Mario Lopez yes!
@@xlightssx thanks for replying.
