    This video shows how to Replace the Cooling Fan Motor and Assembly on 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo WJ. It may also apply to years 1999 2000 2001 2002. I called it a Wrangler a couple time by accident.

    Thank you! I was removing the shroud for the fan to get down to the water pump. I spent an hour trying to figure out how to release the electrical hook up for the fan. I tried several videos, but nobody would show me how to release it and you did! Man, I’m so grateful. Thank you again and I subscribe just because you did that. You gave me information that nobody else would, because they think it’s standard. I am really not a mechanic, but I learn quick and you taught me.

    Great tips. It helped me discover another one. 1st remove the two front mounting bolts completely. Then pull the radiator up as far as it will go. You may need to pry it up from the bottom until the pegs or rubber bushings come out of the frame. Wedge the thickest piece of wood you can fit under the passenger side corner. This will move all 4 shroud bolts to be more accessible. It will also move the bottom drivers side away from the frame so you can get to it with a swivel socket drive. It's still a PITA to get to but you can. It's also hard to start that bolt when reassembling but you can

    Thanks for the video. I paid a shop $410 (parts/labor) to replace my fan back in 2012. Did it my self for $90 this time. I was dreading those two bottom shroud bolts but it turns out they were missing. Did my shop forget to put them back last time? Did the previous owner loose them? Who knows. I saved a lot of time not having to mess with them. The new fan seems to be working fine with only the top two bolts holding the shroud. May be when the weather cools I'll replace the missing bolts on the bottom.

    Great Vid.....thanx for sharing. Luckily, someone left the driver's side lower shroud bolt off as it is near impossible to get too. The Passenger side lower could benefit from a small pocket in the frame rail for a 1/4" drive socket to slip over. Perhaps one could beat one into it?

    Tom.. How did you remove the lines at the bottom Drivers side? Tough to remove / pry out?

    • @TheWorldAsSeenByTom
      @TheWorldAsSeenByTom  7 років тому +1

      the one in the "c" clip I pushed out by spreading it with a screwdriver, the one in the shroud I worked out with my fingers. its tough, just take you time so you dont crimp the lines.

    @the world as seen by tom at minute 1:35 you mentioned the connector that goes to the fan but on my jeep grand cherokee 2004 4.0 there is an extra connector just laying there and there is no wire lose for me to just plug back in. I already plugged my fan so i'm not sure what is this extra connector for any ideas?

    What its the difference on getting a fan motor w/ tow package and one w/o tow package? The difference is almost $60. I have a 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, I beleive it originally comes w/ tow package.

      +Josramvalroj Im not exactly sure but it could be a higher revving fan for extra cooling power. Check under your rear bumper to see if you have a tow hitch.

    I've heard you can sometimes bring new life to an old radiator fan motor simply by installing a pair of new brushes. Did you happen to try this, or see where it's possible on the old unit? I'm looking to save the $50 for a new motor (or $80 for new fan or $120 for entire new assembly w/shroud).
    Also, have you noticed how many after market fans of this type stipulate "for Grand Cherokee without tow package"?
    Mine has the tow package, which adds a mechanical fan, but this looks like the exact same electrical fan as on my 1999 GC!

      VideoNOLA The motor body has a thick crimped metal lip on the back. I dont think its possible to open it without damaging it. My coils were open on my motor. I dont know is there are different fans for towing packages. $80 is good for the fan. If you can replace it yourself you are already saving a ton of money. Any major auto repair less than $100 is always good.

      The World as Seen by Tom Cool, this puts my mind at ease. Think I'll go with a replacement motor from TYC (on Amazon), and just keep my existing blades and shroud. FYI, I did all the testing (fuse, relay, connector, voltage, resistance, etc.) and pinned the problem down to the fan motor itself, which reads infinite resistance and though it spins freely (by hand), doesn't budge when 12V is applied. Never seen it run!

      ***** I like to hear this type of feedback rather than a thumbs up or down! Im glad it helped. Even some manuals cant really show you what a video can. I intend on making a video for any part i replace on my Jeep that seems less than straight forward or can at first glance appear to be overwhelming. Most repair shops are now charging at least $60 and hour to do simple work. So you get dirty or get a cut. Its worth it. Once again, I am very glad my video helped you!

      +Melissa Oregon, I'm glad you were able to fix it, now I have the same problem do you think it's safe to drive the car while the fan not working? I see smoke comes out of the radiator but the temperature of the car isn't high. I was wondering if I can drive it like that till I fix it.

    • @TheWorldAsSeenByTom
      @TheWorldAsSeenByTom  8 років тому +1

      +silver make sure that smoke isnt from something electrical. You dont want a fire. My fan failed during winter, it was cold and I had no idea it was bad as long as I was moving. I finally noticed it when I sat idle for about 15 minutes. Then it overheated, but the temp gauge never showed hi temp until it was too late. With warmer weather coming you should get it fixed asap.

    About how long did it take you to remove and over all put back?

    • @TheWorldAsSeenByTom
      @TheWorldAsSeenByTom  7 років тому

      less than a couple hours, it depends how quick you can get the hidden bolt out.

    Let me ask your opinion. My ac is intermediately stopping blowing cold air and just blows ambient air. Took it to Goodyear to get there ac check up and they told me I need to replace this fan. Could this fan effect whether my ac is cold or not?

    • @TheWorldAsSeenByTom
      @TheWorldAsSeenByTom  6 років тому

      they are probably right, check to see if the fan is even spinning. Thats how I noticed my fan was broken. When I came to a stop the ac air was no longer cold and thats cuz its in front of the radiator. the heat prevents teh ac from working, but when you are moving you have air flow so everything seems normal then.

      It was and it worked. Also looks like it wasn’t the first time it was replaced. Are the bolts on the bottom longer? Cause who ever replaced it last didn’t replace the bottom bolts. I took the ones form the top and bought more but the don’t seem to be catching and screwing in.

    • @TheWorldAsSeenByTom
      @TheWorldAsSeenByTom  6 років тому

      all the should bolts are same size, all the frame support bolts are the same size. Make sure the clip nut is good, they sometimes break.

      there could be rust on the shaft, spray it with a derusting spray and let it sit
