I did this today, threw the elec fan aside. Then I ran the hell out of it, and sat in a drive thru for 20 mins, never even approached 210, stayed around 180 ( thermostat temp) or lower. IT WORKS!! Really well at that. Thanks for this vid , !
I have a 2004 WJ with 249000 on it . Adding the clutch fan was a godsend. I kept the electric fan in a well. It’s like a tornado in the engine bay when running. It’s my hunting Jeep . Pulled a camper through the dessert 110 degrees outside the engine temp stayed at 210 the whole time! Suggest installing a transmission cooler as well. This fix is a must do.
I did the same upgrade to my 04 wj. Disabled the clutch from the fan. Slid fan up from the bottom. Then slid the clutch up from the bottom then reassembled the clutch to fan then to the motor. Tighten to specs. Thanks for video!
When you get to 300k, consider changing your timing chain. Messy job but it's needed.
You need to get it below 210°F I'd say 205°F max. If you run a WJ 4.0 I6/4.7L V8 at 210°F+ for months on end you can destroy your lifters and it can end up costing you thousands in engine repairs.
Check your thermostat, CTS, adjust your electric fan therm switch to a slightly lower ON temp, maybe change your radiator or do a full chemical flush using distilled water on radiator/heater core/engine block and refill with Zerex GO5 HOAT coolant. There is a coolant drain plug on left side of engine on the 4.7L WJs to drop 1/3 of the coolant but he careful and plastic wrap the O2 sensor below it before removing plug.
Ordered and got mine in, installed works great thank you.
Hey give you a heads up, if your drivers side seat cushion is crushed on the left side next to the door and you get that sinking feeling to the left butt cheek, go to the pick and pull salvage yard and get the passenger side seat cushion. You'll never find a good one for the drivers side, but almost always will find a good pass side, it just takes a minor bit of cutting with an razor, but it works great. A new foam seat cushion at the Jeep dealership cost $265.00, a used pass. cushion from the salvage yard $7.50 big difference.
You should do a video on how to make it fit?
Thanks Justin for the vid and info.I had previously replaced it myself but with a totally different part number on fan and clutch wich works superb.only difference im seeing on yours that theres a bigger space to tighten that clutch nut wich is way better when your going to replace it. On the one i put will have to put i very thin long wrench tighter space and fans dont have holes to stop it from moving when replacing it.
Thank you for taking time to post this video, huge help to me! got rid of electric fan installed the new fan and clutch, life is good now.
That engine bay is super clean
I had searched and researched which fan and clutch to use, to no avail. Watched your video, ordered and installed the parts you recommended. WORKS PERFECT on 1999 Jeep Grand. Wish I would have found this video years ago. Thank you very much.
You're welcome and I'm glad I could be of help!
I just did mine! woah shes gonna do much better now. I had to do it after the third replay replacement
Good video brother. I've been going to a back yard mechanic. Not anymore. I'll do it myself. Thanks to you.
Good video brother. Thanks for taking the time to show this. This really takes a lot of potential problems off the table that's for sure. Mine has been running great with factory parts but I have had my belly full of overheating with it in the past. Had I done this I'd never had those problems. Another thing to point out, if you have soldering skills and still using the elect fan I suggest you upgrade the connector at the fan. It is a bottleneck for amps. It gets hot and melts plus it causes the electronic components to run overheat. I used RC Deans plugs (the "T" type) used on RC cars. Theres other types you can use. They are high amp and solved so much. I haven't had a problem in 5 yrs since simply changing the connectors.
Excellent Resolution for the Over Heating issue. I'll be making this my next project....
OK, to All who watch this Video.... May I offer that you follow Justin's Instructions completely... and take your time... I completed the upgraed this weekend, and what a difference it make for cooling....
Thanks all these years later. My old GC overheated in bumper to bumper last week but ran nice and cool at freeway speeds. Uh! Fan. I'm sick of the electric fan "stuff". Thanks a million for this video and the parts list. You saved me troubleshooting pain and some $$$.
I'm happy I could be of help. Thanks for watching my video and commenting!
Great video and thanks!!! My electric fan quit working and lucky me called Advanced and they had the parts and found the bolts in a local Lowes. Job took around 1 hour and problem gone!!!! 😎👍
Thank you! And I'm glad I could help.
Thanks for the video, fixing to do this to my 2000 Jeep GC 💯💯.
Thanks a lot, i just did mine the exact same way to my jeep, greatly appreciate your video
Glad I could help! Thanks for checking out my video!
Just did it to my 2000 wj… thanks!
I upgrade mine long time ago using a fan assembly from a 2004 land rover discovery, the niddle never over half way.
Hey Justin ATV. I wanted to comment to let you know this setup worked for me. Amazon shipped me the wrong item (clearly listed a diff part on the box, buncha dummys), but my local Advance had the Carquest one you also linked. I bought the exact bolts and washers you had in the vid @ home depot for $3. It's unbelievable how much air this new setup moves. The stock electric fan is crap!
Thanks for video and part # all worked out perfectly.
No problem! Glad I could help!
Could you tell me the part number he used 4 this job
He has returned!!!! And in OG status🤘🏻
Oh you know it! 😁😁😁
Nice. I have replaced 3 harness. From the relay. I have to do this. Thanks man.
I put a 11 blade fan from a junkyard Ford Explorer. I bought a brand new clutch, put them together, and that thing works great.
Thanks for the video
What year for explore u use
All the parts used are in the description
So glad to see you back brother!!!
Me too brother! Lol. I'm trying to figure out how to work making videos work into my schedule. I miss making them and the comments everyone post. I'm trying I swear.
JUSTIN ATV it’s all good man make them as you can! We will always be here backing you 💯
Thank You Justin ATV, saveed me a headache!!
Spent so much money for my mechanic to not fix the overheating issue. Ordered the parts you said to get. Put the fan and clutch on this morning. Finally fixed the issue. Thank you!!!!
By the way I did not have to remove the electric fan as there was room. You are awesome man!
AWESOME! Glad I could help you out. Thank you!
What parts did he used can ant one tell me please
All parts are in the description
Thank you for the vid, I was looking for a good product to switch out my Jeep.
No problem! Glad I could help.
Great video thanks brother. Glad to see you put up a video. That is really clean for the miles. I don't like the electric fan idea. I think you have this one in the bag. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again brother
Thank ya brother! The manual fan is the way to go on these. More reliable, works better and it is simplified.
If stuff is melting, that is normally an indication of high amp draw, usually a bad connection or motor. But the relay under headlight may need the heat sink compound reapplied, as the relay uses body as a heat sink and over time, water and temp changes degrade compound reducing efficiency.
yeah my mother 2003 Grand jeep Cherokee started to over heat thinking its that electric fan so i plan on adding that fan clutch for sure
You saved your self a lot of money doing it yourself, nice job
It's actually a very easy upgrade. I dont know how much a shop would charge but its always nice to be able to do it yourself. Thanks a million!
My 04 JGC goes about 3/4 on temp gauge in the summer here where I live. I will be doing this. Thank you for your time and help.
Put a fan clutch and fan on there and it will hold steady no matter how hot it gets outside, I did this two years ago
@@oveidasinclair982 Can you mod that on the 4.7l or just the 4.0?
@@tylerdubois9020 I believe there is clearance for the V8, what is nice about where I live there are 4 p&p salvage yards and everyone of them have at least half a dozen, or more Jeep Cherokees in them. Or google it, someone out there has written something on the subject
@@oveidasinclair982 Thanks for the quick response 9 months later haha. Yeah i did some research it doesn't look like its that well written into. I have an 04 with the tow package 4.7l HO, which came with the Hydrauli fan that runs of the PS fluid. I would like to convert it to mechanical but I dont think its possible. The Hydraulic fan barely runs, luckily my cooling system is solid and she never overheats.
I ran across a guys video in the past couple of days talking about converting from a hydro to another setup. If I can find it and it will let me share his video I'll post it here for ya.
Omg this crazy I’m having problems with my fa relay I got a new one still making bad connection. This is a great thing is going to help me so much. Hot weather is coming thanks for this.
Your welcome! Thanks for checking out my video.
That was awesome
Hell yeah brother your a life saver
Thank you! Hope this has helped you out. I've been running this same set up for 2yrs now and still haven't had the first issue.
@$#$&Frickin awesome@#@ I went and bought the parts for my wife's WJ, did it in 5 minutes, temp stays just under 210°. It's 105° in August in TX right, air conditioner works. The wifes happy. Thank you bud.
Your welcome! Glad I could help.
You can replace the thermostat with a lower temperature thermostat and it will open sooner.
Was your jeep overheating while idling? Mine temp only goes up while idling on a hot day so I think adding the clutch fan will fix it. I don't have a fan on there now. Once I start driving the temp goes right back to normal, so I'm hoping the elec fan just doesn't move enough air at idle.
Great video justin bro
Thank ya brother
great job
I don’t have a Jeep or a fan issue, but I have missed your videos 😝👍🏼
Get you a jeep... you'll have all kinds of problems! 😂🤣💯
Thank you, Very Very much ;
I did the replacement , only thing I didn’t do was putting lock tite on the fan clutch nut
Only because I didn’t hear it mentioned.socked it down tight
Removing the radiator makes installing the fan much easier. Then you install the shroud and then the radiator.
Oh man thanks a lot. I was thinking the same thing. Mine definitely needs better cooling. Was thinking of getting a thicker rad. I dont understand why they added a single row rad when theres so much room to make it thicker. Question though. What do you do with the wiring so it doesnt through a code?
You are the man!!! TY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best way is to get a one size larger radiator thick , electric water pump , after market relay or relays40/60 amp extend them out to the fans or near bottom of radiator outwards out install a a extra fan 5 inch, to help cooling a larger cranking amps battery & hood hood scoop will help
I installed my clutch fan on my 04 GCL in about 5 minutes. Start to finish. ... I just cut the top out of my shroud screwed that sucker on there and duct-taped the shroud back in place.😂... Easier than messing with those lower bolts
yea justin you sell tools good stuff ill spend $$$ with you ................. il be back im ordering the fan now ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Nice video sir very helpful working on a 02 Laredo wondering about options for cooling
I just ordered the fan blade I hope this solves all the problems I went threw ..
Good to see ya back. Run the old school fan from before 2000. Nice mod man, great video 👍
I may just try it! Thanks brother!
GREAT VIDEO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.... ILL BE BACK WITH Q & A PART #S
I’m going to install electric fans on the ac condenser with a relay that way it doesn’t over heat the fan..I’ll only turn it on when I’m in traffic
brilliant
So, I've never had a viscous fan clutch before, so the fact I got a defective one went over my head. I can freely spin the clutch, its not engaging properly and THAT is why I am overheating still. It says the clutch should resist spinning but mine is almost no resistance at all.
Edit - Wow. Major difference when you arent installing defective parts! I'm gonna have to change my Jeep's nickname to Hurricane! Thanks for the video!
Hey brother thanks a lot solve my problem I had just put a three core radiator in my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo replace the thermostat the hoses the water pump problem I was having was the electric fan that came Factory on that for some weird reason it was blowing air out of the vehicle and not sucking air into the vehicle so when you held up a rag to the grill it would blow the rag away from the car my first thought was somebody wired it up wrong but the wires were never cut everything was Factory anyway I threw the electric fan away and I put a clutch fan in there just like you said and now problem solve runs cool days about 180 and it doesn't go over thank you enough brother
Great, now how about a fix for the goofball hydraulic fans on the 2003-04 V8s?
About to do this to mine. My only concern is that I think I'd want the fan to run when the AC is on. I live in the deep south and summers are no joke
Great video, would you have a video on doing a hydraulic fan to electric or clutch fan setup ? I have an 06 Commander 5.7
Thank you! No unfortunately I don't.
Justin any thoughts on wheel spacers
Thanks justin it works great any ideas on the check engine light?
No, I haven't been able to find any solution.
No problem! That's why I try to make informative videos, to help out. Thanks for checking out my video!
JUSTIN ,,,,,,, UPDATE ordered parts , INSTALLED ON MY 1999 GRAN CHEROKEEE mmmmmm nice & cool . :)
AWESOME!
Hey man, great video! I’m doing this tomorrow. Question: you did tighten the fan clutch down to the engine as tight as you could before operation correct? Probably a stupid question but if I don’t ask it I’ll find a way to mess it up.
Lol, yes. Make sure you tighten it as much as you can. But aslo keep this in mind, MOST fan clutches & fan clutch mounting point are designed to tighten in the direction that the engine in rotating. That way they don't work themselves off.
Thanks bud
No problem! Let us know how it works out for you and what you think about it.
Man, ive been around for a while and never came across your channel until now! Thanks !! Can this fan be used on a XJ also? I am having such a hard time getting the mechanical fan off. I am also replacing my PS pump and the return line on the steering box was so rusted that it snapped like a twig. I have been using the map and PB but still cant get it off. Any suggestions? I don't have a crowsfoot wrench set
Wat year and make and model did u get parts for to do the conversion
How does the temperature in traffic do?
awsome
Thank ya!
The part # for the fan and clutch would be very helpful!!@
I gave them in the description.
Nice fan upgrade...great job showing the install... Now... how'd you burp the coolant.??
Thanks Pappy! I use a burp funnel from Lisle. Part #24680. I think I have a link in my descriptio.
Love your video. Great information. I’m looking to purchase a ‘04 Grand Cherokee soon. Undecided on the 4.0 or 4.7 HO. Do you know (off the top of your head) if this would be any different for the 4.7 HO as far as the parts, water pump threads, etc are concerned? Any information would greatly appreciated. Ty in advance. 👍
The 4.7 is a V8 engine. The parts are completely different from the 4.0 .
Had to take my junkyard fan clutch off after my trip to Milwaukee for the tool concert lol funny how I found this video. I have an 04 with e fan but added a clutch fan and now my water pump is being a lil bitch 😅
That's gotta suck. But hey, at least the water pump isn't a pain to change out.
Thanks man!
Your welcome!
@@JUSTINATV What size clutch wrench did you use 35 or 36mm?
To be honest I don't remember. Honestly there is enough room that you can use a large crescent wrench if you have one.
@@JUSTINATV Ok tyvm again.
This fan set up moves a lot of air! I was surprised. Temp says under 200 degrees! Again tyvm; you're the man!
I went cheap and got the metal 5 blade fan from our local LKQ salvage yard and a new fan clutch from Advance Auto and it works great in the hot summer months deep down south here, but I would like to get that factory electric fan working, I cut a hole under the pass. side front head light where the cooling fan control relay is suppose to be (1999-2003), but it's not there. Apparently in 2004 it was either moved, or done away with, you have the same rig I have, do you know where it's located, or if there is one still?
Itz in one the boxes behing the battery on passenger side ...
Can you get the fan and clutch in w/o removing the shroud? Thought you might have taken it off for video quality.
You can.
For whatever reason the 4.7 wj has an hydraulic powered fan off of the power steering pump. I want to swap it out to an electric on my wj. Or maybe go clutch like your vid.
My 04 has both a fan clutch AND an electric fan. I believe the electric fan is for when the AC is on. Will this upgrade keep my AC blowing cold while eliminating the fan relay problem?
Is the ❤a yes?
Hmm, what if my jeep has both the clutch and electric, but the electric fails sometimes. Would upgrading to this mechanical fan solve it overheating at idling in traffic or would I need the electric also working?
This upgrade will solve it.
My 04 WJ has both a man fan and an electric fan. Can I upgrade to the fan you used, instead of the 5 blade it came with?
Yes.
Got the clutch, fan, bolts and Loctite. I'm goin in boys!
Shot yeah! Let us know what you think!
Have you done a hard core flush on your coolant system?
No not blowing it out. I mean putting radiator flush/coolant flush in your coolant system to clean and possibly unclog any blockages in the system.
It takes a few heat cycles to really flush the coolant system, and the heat needs to be on as well to flush the heater core. Then you have to drain the whole coolant system and refill with new coolant.
I'd take it out, put a good coolant flush in it and drive it for a couple of days. The drain put in a new thermostat and refill with 50/50 mixed coolant.
A little late to the party, but I have a 99 WJ 4.0, it has both the electric and the clutch fan......
I thought they all did......heh
I too have electric and manual fans.
Ive got the parts and bolts now. Just wondering do I need to drain the whole system and put new coolant. 04 cherokee thanks.
That's all up to you. It won't hurt a thing and you know that you have fresh coolant in your ride. and just in time for winter!
What is the beginning music? I recognize it from the eastwood tools videos
Tool - 46 and 2
Have a 2001 grand cherokee laredo, what are the part numbers to the mechanical fan and clutch I can use.
All the parts I used are in the description. Thanks for checking out my video!
How do you tighten the clutch onto the water pump? Do you have to have a clutch wrench?
I used a larger adjustable wrench. It doesn't have to be super tight.
How did you get the bottom bolts of the radiator fan shroud offf?
Mine didn't have the factory fan in it when I got it.
Where did you get the green flashlight?... Great video. You sound my brother 😁🇺🇲🇺🇲
Which one?
How did you do the work around for the air conditioning? When the electric fan is not plugged in the AC compressor doesn't turn on. Thanks
I never had that issue with mine. And if anyone else has they haven't said anything. That's a new one for me.
Hello, did you figure this one out?
I installed this exact setup and I guess my jeep has to much power it blew up in pieces 2 of the blades and punctured my radiator. Don't know from where gotta check when I take it apart smh 🤦🏻♂️ It only lasted like a week! Gonna go back to electric fan.
You didn't show the tightening process. Can you just wrench the fan onto the water pump, or do you have to insert something through the wheel so you can crank it down?
The new fan clutch will spin right on, then wrench it.
Hey Justin thread lock on the water pump threads???
No. I put the thread lock on the bolts that hold the fan & fan clutch together.
im wondering does it not have an issue with the A/C unit because in my 01 single fan if you hit a/c button the fan doesn't work the a/c won't kick compressor on or is that only on the duel fan i've seen ones with clutch fan on then as u put on an i wanted to also but they also have a electric fan (small) in it as well for a/c ? any suggestions thx mike Delo
Also thaught about that.did you figure it out?
I haven't had any issues with my A/C not working after doing this mod. Actually my A/C works even better now.
Sorry for the late reply, UA-cam is just now letting me see your comments (you aren't the only one this has happened to).
Why can’t I find a how to on a 4.7 v8 change over to fan clutch
That's a question I cant answer. I myself haven't done it nor anyone I know has done it.
What is the clutch and fan , parts and numbers that was used. In this video?
They are all in the description.
Last year I got a 2002 with 99k on it and it does run a little hot in drive thrus etc but still not overheating, should I replace it now?
Wouldn't hurt.
One thing I noticed about your Jeep, your coolant temperature sensor isn't installed in your thermostat housing like mine. I'm just curious where yours is located. It looks like yours has a plug in it on the right hand side of the thermostat housing. Or is that just a temporary plug
That's where mime is at. The one that was in it when I started the video was broken. I put a new one in while doing the video, but didn't show it.
Any problems with getting the clutch and fan to fit together?
Not at all as long as you use the part numbers I provided.
How do you tighten up the fan to the water pump?
I used a fan clutch tool. You can use a large adjustable wrench and try letting the belt hold pressure on the water pump pulley. It doesn't have to be super tight, it will tighten itself , but still tighten it the best you can.
Where did you use the loctite?. Thanks
On the bolts that hold the fan to the fan cluch.
Anyone use this setup on a 4.7L WJ?
Is there enough room to put a thin electric fan as well?
Should be, but no promises. There is a lot of room, but it all depends on how and where you mount the electric fan.
Quick question in doing this will it throw any codes?
Unfortunately it does on some and doesn't on others. It did on mine. Shows the fan not working.
What temperature did you calibrate the fan clutch to, so it kicks into high gear?
No calibration needed.
Can you run your ac at a red light and still be cool. I love your info bro thanks
Yes you can, all day every day. I haven't had the first issue with it, it actually got my ac to stay cold while sitting still.
