My wife had a whole for about 7 years. It had the 4.0l. I had to put a battery in it when we first met, and a crank sensor a few years ago. That’s it with 180,000+ miles, other than regular maintenance. I wish she never totaled it. It was her 3rd totaled jeep. It was a sad day loosing it with all the memories we made in it.
I currently have a zj with the 4.0l with 275,000+ miles and still going strong. Needless to say she’s not allowed to drive it.

Sad to hear three of them had to be totaled, especially one with memories. I regret getting rid of my 1976 MGB for that reason.
Glad she made it every time.
“Needless to say she’s not allowed to drive it”
      Love that 😂
Keep that ZJ going. It’s got 400k in her.

My current WJ 4.7 Overland is still going perfectly at just under 120,000 miles. I sadly have to sell it but only because I came across an identical car with 26,000 miles. One old fella bought it new in 2003 and has just had to stop driving. Mine's great but this one drives like brand new. 9:06

The 545RFE is a very good transmission and it only came paired with the 4.7 V8. My Dad owned a 2001 WJ 4.7 that had 337k miles when we sold it. The engine had been replaced but the transmission was still the original as far as we knew. It shifted just fine, too!

When I purchased my WJ 4.7L LMT 6 years ago, there were 2 thing wrong. 1) the engine tick (as advertised) was an engine knock, big end bearing failure. 2) the blend doors were not working. So the car price of $4000 went down to $500 purchase price. In went a new reco engine. Out came the dash and HVAC. All blend doors were replaces (2 broken) and also replaced the ac condenser and heater core. The cars exterior and interior are near perfect, and it goes very well. Since then I've done more work but I love the car and I want to keep it fpr a long time so I take care of it

nice video, I have a 4.7 H.0 and have worked on both the 4.0 and 4.7ho. I like the 4.7 better, gas mileage is about the same, but the 4.7 has to have the cooling system dialed in and oil changes religiously every3k miles or it dies, but power wise, it is an awesome car. got mine for 600. and had a valve seat down, fixed it myself and has been a daily for about 3 years now, no issues at all. I changed the fuel pump, because it would pass 75 and at 75 the engine light will come on, would disconnect the battery and do another 100 miles or so and as soon as the 75 mph would it the light would come on with a code that said. lack of fuel or something, (cant remember)and so replaced the fuel pump and it has been great since. cold ac and hot seats and heater, 1 battery and about to do a mild lift and new tires. it is awesome off road. wasn't expecting it to handle major obstacles but it does just like my land cruiser for a fraction of the price. about to get a 2.7 diesel 2002 .

Viscous coupler section is wrong. WJs with Quadra Drive came with a 247 transfer case, which is gears driven. Viscous coupler is the 249 transfer case, which came in the ZJ, previous generation.
Also, technicality, but there is no frame, it's a unibody.

Yeah people that don't understand the engine well hate on it. Got 214K miles on my 4.7L HO.
Change the oil every 3k miles with dyno or 5k with full synthetic with the filter, keep on top of the cooling system and make sure you use HOAT coolant when you flush it and it can last over 150k no problem.
The 545RFE transmission is much better than the 42Rfe the 4.0s have.

If you take care of the 4.7 (regular oil change’s, correct coolant, fixing sensors right away if they go bad) then it will last you well into the 300k+ range with a heck of a lot more power than the 4.0. If you’re a lazy car owner though go for the 4.0 but if you’re a responsible adult 4.7 is your dream engine.

    • @davidpowell3347
      @davidpowell3347 Рік тому

Regular 4.7 require 89 octane gas? The high comp. one with the tailpipe bugle tip requires 91 octane? All require synthetic oil and/or not over 3,000 miles before oil change?
Is the factory installed radiator better on the ones with the heavy duty trailer tow package? (Has the heavy reinforcing drawbar for the hitch receiver mounted behind the flimsy rear bumper piece)

Everyone hates on the 4.7 meanwhile a ton of people have the 4.7 and have zero issues. Make sure your plugs are gapped properly, make sure you bleed the cooling system properly. The transmissions are also heavy duty and haven’t given me any issues. Proper maintenance on any ANY vehicle is key. I love the 4.7 and if I had my choice I’d stay with the 4.7 for that extra power needed in this beauty.

"Your window regulator may fail" Wrong. Your window regulators WILL fail. It's not the quality of the part. They are just a bad design. Figure on replacing the front regulators every 5 years or so. Replace the door panel clips when you do, or the door panel will pop out when the door is closed.

There’s also the driver’s door wiring harness. The wires eventually break and it tells you the door is open and interior lights won’t shut off. Plus every seal eventually leaks. I would buy another 4.7 WJ mainly because I now know how to replace almost everything and I’ve got all the tools and extra fluids laying around to do it. I’ve had many adventures in it though so that’s the price I guess.

I have learned owning a 2011 jeep grand Cherokee limited with the 5.7 hemi that jeep stands for just empty every pocket, because every time I turn around it's costing me $100 here and $200 there! Last week my alternator went out and it costed $500 for a new alternator. I love my grand and it's the most comfortable and durable vehicle I've ever owned, and even though I bought it used, I've spent thousands in repairs after only putting 30,000 miles on it and I've done all the repairs myself. I thought VW parts were expensive until I got my jeep. I love it, but it's turned into a money pit. So my advice is if you want a jeep, be prepared for frequent breakdowns and spending lots of money for repairs. JEEPS AIN'T CHEAP

You are perfectly right about 4.0 vs 4.7 motors. However there are other components should be taken into consideration. 4.0 came with crappy 4-speed transmission, very good Selec-Trac transfer case, and weak Dana 30 axle. 4.7 models (2002+), on other side, came with excellent 5-speed 545RFE transmission, dull AWD transfer case, and much stronger Dana 44 axle. So the ideal combination would be to get a 4.0 model, swap the axle from 4.7 model, and also take the transmission from 4.7 2002+. The axle swap is bolt-on. The only question I did not find the answer is how difficult would be to pair 545RFE with 4.0 engine. Do you know anything about that?

You can occasionally find the 4.7L equipped Grand Cherokees with the 242 selec-trac transfer case...or you can pull the 242 transfer case out of another Jeep and swap the input/output shafts and throw it in as well.
The Grand Cherokee (ZJ) 1993-1998 had a 231, 242, or 249 transfer case option which was Command Trac (231), Selec-Trac (242), or Quadra-Trac (249). The Quadra-Trac transfer case had a viscous coupler in it that would fail and turn your full time 4WD into part time 4WD, still drivable, but you'd have binding and hopping in tight turns as a result of the failure...many people swapped them out for the 231 or 242 transfer case.
The Grand Cherokee (WJ) 1999-2004 had the 242 or 247 transfer case option....They dropped the part time only Command Trac (231) in 1998, hardly anybody ordered them that way, most people that originally bought the Grand Cherokee bought them as a family car, vacation vehicle, winter car, so they wanted the ease of not having to mess with 4wd shift levers, it was in full time 4WD all the time, so they never had to mess with it....the 247 transfer case had a gerotor coupler rather than the viscous coupler...a bit better system, until people started putting the wrong fluid in the transfer case and it would mess with the clutch pack rendering it permanently damaged. The 247 transfer case was the base for both the Quadra-Trac and Quadra-Drive 4WD systems. The Quadra-Drive system added front and rear vari-lok differentials that could progressively lock anywhere between an open differential and fully locked....many of them were damaged as well from people using the wrong fluids in the differentials and not adding the friction modifier additives for the clutch packs.
The Grand Cherokee had 2 different V8's, the 4.7L and the 4.7L HO....if you find an HO model buy it, they had heavier engine internals and far less failure problems than the standard 4.7L's did.

Purchased a very clean and maintained 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L with automatic transmission and selec-trac 4x4, Dana 35 and 44 Diff's & 242 transfer case with 183k miles about a month ago. The only thing that popped up under reviewing the carfax history has been a track bar replacement, heater core, blend door actuator. The only thing I've had to do so far has been normal maintenance ie: outer TRE's, pcv valve, radiator & power steering fluid flush, along with 02 sensors, and regular oil/filter changes. No Issues with fuel rail, or cooling issues, basically it's like any other vehicle out there you either pay attention to your vehicle's operating systems, care and maintain those systems or don't be surprised when your vehicle goes to crap and winds up being nothing but one costly repair after another.

The 4.7 is crap, period. They blow head gaskets, drop valve seats, eat oil pumps. There is very little room to service them. For all the technology in that engine , its a MAJOR failure on every front. At 287 ci, it doesnt make 1 hp per ci with overhead cam, multi port injection, hi flow heads, hot cam. even the HO version is weak, consider a 1957 chevy 283 made 283 hp with mechanical injection and a mild cam. Parts are insanely expensive. Junk. Jeep was fine until Chysler get involve and worse after Mercedes. Chysler built junk and they knew it , didnt stand behind their product and told the customer 'we got your money, fuck off"...
