  • Shown here on my 2002 Jeep grand Cherokee. I set the expectations for an electric fan relay replace and provide high level step by step. This repair does involve heavy disassembly or detailed cutting as well as wiring. Seeking to repair issues with the electric fan coming on leading to over heating.

    I have an 01 Cherokee laredo. My question, the connector to the relay, 1 of the 4 slots on it is burnt. Should it be replaced also? I connected a junk yard relay and had no luck. Fan is good and fuse up top is good also. Thanks in advance

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I would replace it, they burn out fairly easily. And for your other question, no, the electric fan should only turn on when the engine gets to a predetermined tempature. Which does make it a bit hard to see if it's all working or not but you'll just have to pop the hood after a long drive while it's still running to see.

    Great info.. I just changed my thermostat and water pump. Burped the air out ran the jeep in park for 45min. No overheating with the jeep running at 190' temp but the crapy electric fan did not kick on so I will replace coolant thermostat senor and would also do the relay... I do wanna switch to a manual "Dorman fan" 11 blade... this would avoid relay issues. Can I ask you what year your Jeep Grand Cherokee? Reason I ask I saw a video saying the relay is not located in the same spot as in your video for the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0. I don't know if this is true or not guess I'll find out if I decide to stay with electric fan

      Yeah I have a 2002, and honestly I'd hope they would've moved it on newer models it's a terrible spot for something that seems to fail pretty often.

    I have a 02 Grand Cherokee and I am getting the code for the rad fan relay. It would go away at first for a while after I’d clear but recently it’s been coming back often. The fan works just fine and I live somewhere that is pretty cold rn so I don’t really want to be outside cutting. Could it be the fuse causing the code or will I need to replace the relay when it gets warmer

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  7 місяців тому

      Your car has to go thru a drive cycle after clearing codes so depending on how much you drive after my explain the irregularity with the code coming back. Honestly these check engine codes are pretty basic back then it's really just notifying when it thinks power isn't getting to the relay and therefore it has failed. Curious that the fan would still work if it's not getting power due to wiring issues so it might actually be the tempature sender that's faulty. You should be able to replace the tempature sender, relay, and fuse for well under 100 and I recommend updating it all when you can but if the fan is working I would start with the temp sender, its easy right at the front and cheap on rockauto. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Would this be the best approach to a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee throwing up a P1490 code? My jeep isnt overheating or anything like that so maybe it is the fuse that I need to replace?

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  2 роки тому

      Yeah mine never threw up any codes it would just over heat. Though mine was messed with a bit before it got to me I think you you are getting an actual code it's related more to fuses than it all together not working like mine. To be honest though I live in a pretty hot environment and my jeep still doesn't overheat except in the drive thru so it's hard to tell outside of popping the hood after a long drive with the engine still going

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  Рік тому +1

      Unfortunetly that sounds like someone attempted the repair already. You can get to that relay position by taking off the whole bumper which is why it wouldn't need to be cut. Best thing to do is find the fan wires that should come out toward the passenger side and follow the wires. Someone might have put the relay elsewhere with the last repair

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  Рік тому +1

      Fan is tempature driven which does make it difficult to confirm if it's not working. If you know for sure the tempature sensor works it will either be a bad relay or issues with the wiring. There are tools out there to confirm but replacing the relay is the most likely cure. I ended up being sick of worrying about the relay working and bypassing it, I have a video on my channel.

    Will not having the fan plugged in effect the jeep starting?

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  Рік тому

      No. The only way messing with anything fan related could affect the jeep starting would be if the battery died because the fan was left on from it being manually bypassed or somehow there is a constant power draw which wouldn't happen from lack of something plugged in. It's just a relay to direct power when prompted but if you have a full battery this wouldn't have anything to do with it not starting.

    I have a 04 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 L, What is another location for this dang relay if it is not under the headlight. .I took the headlight out and cut the hole and nothing except where the manufacturing co. made the screw holes. Now I have notice that my under the hood fuse block does have a Low speed and a High speed Rad. fan relay type of fuse things. My main question is did Jeep make a change in design????

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  Рік тому +1

      That is strange as far as I know it should still be there. It's possible someone moved it when they repaired it last and they had just taken the whole bumper off. It will be difficult but I'd say you have to find the wires from the fan and try to follow it to location it shouldn't be too far and should still be somewhere on the passenger side, possibly under the fuse box

    • @picklesgarage

      Hey sorry I was distracted and thought you asked this question on another one of my videos. Yes this can be an issue with the battery draining. I did not have it happen on mine it just wouldn't connect at all but if there is constantly a power it will cause additional issues. Something I have also noticed is people will attempt this repair often and mess it up so if yours is already cut under the light they may have wired it poorly
