A word of caution for anyone doing this themselves. I used a jigsaw to cut the plastic hole. Under the plastic separater, right in front of the relay is a vacuum canister. I accidently cut into the vacuum canister (not knowing what it was at the time). It created a vacuum leak causing all the a/c air to come out the defrost vents, no matter what the a/c was set to. I just covered the vacuum canister puncture with eletrical tape for now, and the problem is solved for now.
The BEST VIDEO EVER - literally saved me almost $1000 in "A" mechanic labor cost for a part that was list priced at $75. The labor to remove and reinstall the front end close enough to 1K to call it 1K - watched this video - measure once....cut twice (miscalculated the first cut) - removed the part, took it to the parts store purchased the part for $57 - installed.....total time start to finish - including the trip to the parts store - under 90 minutes. Can't thank you enough.... This is what makes UA-cam great!
$10 on ebay 2min fix
i love the fact that you did have all the screws already off and loose to show use quicker and not alot of exsplaining everything, thanks for saving me and all of us big money.
Eric...i have used your videos so many times for my 02 cherokee, another great and helpful video. YOU DA MAN!!
Where were you 3 relays ago, always to the shop and we spent hundreds. Now thanks to this video I can keep a spare relay in the Jeep, because as we all know...It will go out again. Can't thank you enough!
You are awesome! This vidoe saved me big bucks! It was easy. Plus my air flow would go to defrost and then vents instantly. Very frustrating. Well when i got to the opening for fan relay i noticed a smal hose was leakig air. Fixed the hose and now no problems with airflow! Fixed two problems at once! Your the man! Thanks
Brilliant! This saved me a lot of money, and time it’s going to take replace the relay when it breaks again. I vacant thank you enough. You are the best!!
Hello, After replacing the thermostat, temp sensor and fan relay in the fuse box I still had the overheating problem. I noticed that the electric powered radiator fan was not coming on. So, I did what I should have done in the beginning, went to the internet and researched the problem, there came a post about the hidden second coolant fan relay. I went to youtube and found your video; PROBLEM FIXED! Thanks for posting this video, saved me hundreds of dollars.
Just changed the fan relay on Jeep. Saved myself a lot of time and money with this video. Thank You VERY MUCH!!
Everything you said was spot on! I had a hard time getting the relay unplugged I didn't notice that you pulled the red Tab all the way off. I kinda butchered the plug but was able to tape it back together nice and tight. Put it all back together and it runs like a champ.
You Da Man!
This is so awesome! We are not mechanics by any stretch of the imagination. We started with first replacing the thermostat, that didn't help. So the better half of the two of us did more research and found your video here. When he got the head light out guess what? It already had a nice hole waiting for him. :-) Thanks so much!!!
Great tip, I tried by removing the battery, battery holder etc, got the module, but there was got way I could get a wrench or socket onto those bolts.
So I did it your way using a multi-tool as the cutter, worked great.
I went one step beyond what you did and 'glued' the piece that I was cut out back in using some silicone, the kind you use around your sink etc. It worked good and now my fan comes on!!!!
Thanks, you really saved my bacon with this one!!
YOU ARE AWESOME!!! Your video helped me so much!! I have never done anything like this before, I made sure that the code on my Jeep was this part that was wrong with the x3 clicking of the ignition and watched your video and did it myself... Prayed over it and after that my 99 Jeep fan is working like a charm!!!!
Thank you for posting this vid! I read about this shortcut in some help forum but seeing a video is a thousand times better. I have 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and this save me time and money.
Thanks for posting this! The garage wanted over $700 to replace this relay and fan. I got the parts for around $100 and can now do it myself.
I just did mine using this method today with a Dremel tool. This is my second time doing this since owning my 1999 Grand Cherokee. The first time I did it I had a friend who was a mechanic so we had a lift and Power tools to quickly take off the front end. We have both since moved so I didn't have that luxury. Doing it this way in the video was quick, and easy. It took me 10 min, and now I have a clean, easy access point to the fan relay if I ever run into the problem again.
Hey man, thanks a lot for posting this. Just inherited a '00 Laredo recently and about two weeks later, the fan quit so, I have to replace the relay and Ive only heard horror stories of how difficult it is to do. So finding someone to simplify it for me will help heaps.
Thanks again!
Thank you so much for posting this DIY video. Saved me a chunk of change.
Dude your videos are awesome no bulshit no beating around the bush you're damn good mechanic and you know your s*** thank you very much it took me 7 minutes to take it out and I'm heading to the auto parts store to get a new one I'll be looking at all your videos for now on thanks
Awesome! Had it out in 15minutes. Took longer to go to Discount Auto Parts to get the $52 Borg Warner relay than it did to cut the hole, take it out and put the new one back in place. New one works great! No more overheating! Thank you very much!
I had it fixed within minutes after getting the part, thank you!
thanks so much for posting this video it saved me a bunch of money from the dealership.
Thank u so much. My jeeps fan had 12 volts going to it but still wouldnt run. I have a manual that tell u everything about grand cherokee's and they said there was a fan control relay switch but didnt state where it was locater or what it looked like. U made my day thanks a bunch!
Thanks a lot dude you just saved me some green!! Love the clarity of the video. And do simple and short.
Thanks tons. Working on my Jeep in Mali, West Africa and fan had stopped. Bought a replacement fan for $350 and nothing... then found your video, swapped out the relay and good to go!
Thanks dude..saved me money today. worked like a charm..Used a hole saw on my drill to make the hole. there is nothing down there to drill into if you go this route.
At first I was skeptical about cutting the hole. But then I figured my Jeep was 10 years old, so what the H. Sure enough, the relay was right there, and after a little struggle (I cut the hole a bit too small), I got it out and replaced it and that solved the problem of the fan running with the engine off. My advice.... as long as you are cutting this hole, cut it large enough to easily reach the screws holding the relay in place. Thank you srcoyote!
Thank you so much for making it so easy it helped us save lots of money.
It worked just like you said
Having exact issue you described in the video. Electric fan works 90% of the time, but randomly stops kicking on in traffic and I start to overheat. This issue usually occurs after the jeep has been running for a while, so I think it's a heat related issue, relay connectors getting too hot or something. I know the relay uses the chassis as a heat sink, so it definitely gets warm. I'm about to replace mine and this video helped a lot, so thanks.
Just did this with my 02 JGC and problem solved, thanks for posting this.
THANKS ALOT IT SAVED ME ALOTTA CASH , AND YOU WERE A GREAT TEACHER
Thanks dude; you just saved me a couple of hundred bucks.
Glad i saw this. Just had mine go out and this saves me lots of time!
I had to replace this before and had to take the bumper and more off, I did it this way this time and it worked great ! Only thing I would add is that you have to pull pretty hard to get the light out, don't be scared to give it a good tug !
Thank you for this video, it saved me tons of time
Thank you for this video. I save allot of money thanks to you.
thank you my freind for the helpful video.its going to save me lots of money and also save alot of time doing it.
Thank you so much literally took me 10 minutes with
To fix ! Super easy !!!
For those who give up on these relays failing time and time again, try replacing it with a manual clutch fan on the front of the engine/waterpump. I did. Works. It bolts right on with no special equipment needed. I got the clutch at O'Reilleys and the fan itself at a Jeep dealership. Less than $100. It fits without taking off the crappy electric fan. Easy to install. Save yourself from the grief of this major design flaw. Go manual.
great idea, however my jeep has both. comes that way with the tow package. it is a good idea to have both in the jeep. if you get stuck in traffic in the summer you will be glad you do. remember that over heating is the fastest way to crack the 0331 cylinder head!!!

Phlox LIve Streaming The problem with the relay is a short in the wiring.I have taken five complete wire harness apart on the WJ.Over time the wires get dry and brittle.Installing a clutch fan isn’t the best choice in my opinions because clutch fans rob horse power.Find a good mechanic and get it fixed correctly.....I’ve been a tec for 30 years
This worked great for us took my Wife and I 20 min to do :-) Thank you sir ;-)
After some troubleshooting I realized I was facing a fan relay problem. I was only getting 4 volts at the fan connector. Apparently these things go bad often enough that there was already a hole cut out under the passenger side headlight where someone had already replaced one before. The part was $53 at O'Reilly and took 15 minutes switch out. Excellent time and money saver!
I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and this procedure was fine. I used a 2.5 inch hole saw to cut the plastic above the relay. Saves time.
Thank you my friend.....Saved me a lot of time
My '04 grand Cherokee actually recently started to over heat only at idle. When I am driving it won't over heat at all so that told me it wasn't the water pump. Also noticed I couldn't hear the fan come on so after doing some research and finding out the fan relays are a common issue im going to look into that first. Great video, hope that is the culprit to my issue. Had I not seen this video I probably would have pulled my front bumper off and everything else.
Thanks for the video it helped out a lot keep them coming.
Awesome ! I can't take credit for feel accomplished at this task but for your video. From start to finish in less
AWESOME... YOU ARE A FRICKING HERO TO A LOT OF US....
Thanks for this vid. Saved me alot of time!!!
Best You Tube tip yet. Thanks again
A lot of love for, really appreciate this information you posted brother.. peace
You’re an absolute G. Thanks man
I did this on my '03. Easiest way to change it out, however the relay I got didn't last but a year. Crap electronics from Autozone. Anyhow, thanks for this video, made my life sooo much easier.
I just followed this vid and did this on my Jeep. Turned the AC on and the fan started going...Glad it was just the relay and not the fan itself.
Great video, you certainly made it look easy getting that orange locking pin out.
Thank you for this video! With the aide of UA-camrs like you, others and yourself saved me at least $700 in shop fees and days without my vehicle. My morning started with a meltdown and by midafternoon, I was back on track. Oh have to give shout out to the team at Advanced Auto for their part as well.
Glad that you share this with the whole bunch...hopefully I had also a dremel and made a fine cut with a 1/6 special drill and will make a silicon seal once this nightmare ends...lol thanks so much!!
Worked great You are the man!!
Thanks for posting this. Wife's car and the check engine light came on. Code reader says that's what it is. Headed to the auto parts store now.
Great video thank you, it worked for me.
may just need to seal up the hole so water doesn't get into the light, I don't know, I know my radiator just blew up, literally, the whole side came off, so finding and testing this relay is part of my search for why and you just gave us a great view on this so thank you very much
Same thing that happened to me exactly.
excelente video me ahorraste mucho tiempo. muchas gracias por subirlo.
It worked on my 2000 jeep grandcherokee. Thanks bro.
Thanks so much, this video helped me so much.
That's awesome, I love real time saving tips.
Thanks I did exactly what you said and it saved me $320 ....
@simone39t You can use a scan tool, or if you don't have access to one try this, its worked for me. Disconnect the neg batt cable for 15 min, while its disconnected put the key in ignition and turn the key like your turning on the vehicle. Hold key in on position and press brakes for a minute to drain all the power. Reconnect battery and see if it worked. Good luck.
Thanks alot. Saved me some time.
Thank you for showing the world
Thanks a lot, great tip....save lots of money !!
THANK YOU man wow incredible thank you again for your help I will change it !!!.
Thanks for the video saved me money... Did the same thing just cut it out and replace old with the new. People did try to.charge just to look at it, but I was like wtf I can do this LOL.
Thank you Thank you Thank you...no time to deal with this right now. Got the fan spinning in no time.
Indeed the relay is the culprit. Replace it, disconnect the battery for about 15min and it should clear the error. No need for a scanner. Turn the key on/off 3x and if there is an error it will show on the dash. If it says "done" it means there were no errors during computer check. Good luck. It worked for me...
Useful information, thanks 👍
As I was saying half an hour. Saved me 150.00 in labor. Thanks
Thanks this helped a lot
Well thank you. This is extremely helpfull. This crazy little gadget will show when is not working and screws up your jeep 2002 grand cherokee, cause if it's wired through the computer system the engine will shut off on you since everything is not working properly.
you are a good person.
I would like to thank you for the vid. I did cut the plastic and lo and behold there it was. I was researching why the fan would stay on after the engine was turned off and found your web page. Thanks Again, Also, I would like to share some info about faded headlights that works very well. You should also do a vid on this. Use Vaseline, smear it on and wipe it off, Done and clear as a bell.
thank u very much , for posting helps mi alot
Thank you sooo much.... I will replace mine tomorrow. :)
Thanks. This was very helpful.
Great job! Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the video, solved my problem as well. Funny thing is I bought my Jeep when it was a year and a half old back in January 2004, and when I popped off the headlight, someone had already cut the hole for me. Easy fix though, no telling how much my mechanic would have charged for it.
Thanks for posting this x 100 !!!!!
SHIT!!!!! You just saved me $$$$$$. 20 minutes + running for the part.
OMG!...my jaw just hit the floor!.the man who put this video in youtube.... have you any idea what you have done/.??? helped a LOT of people!. thank you!

Thank you for this.
make sure you bolt relay down....fender is the heat sink.
My Jeep is 2003. Fan relay went out. Auto shop nor parts house could tell us where fan relay was located. Searched UA-cam. Wall-la. Cut out the piece & replaced switch for $53. THANK YOU!!!!!
Mind blown... how did I never think of that?? I have ben replacing WJ fan relays for years by removing the headerpanel and everything above it
Great job and thanks a lot

Gracias amigo x comparti eso OS FELICITO.......
...wow thks...now i going for the trimmer..maybe my grinder...
@mulgamutt (reply to myself) Fixed! The relay cost about $45 at Pep Boys, they had one in stock, and it took me all of 20 minutes to replace it. Big thanks! Now... I need a cheap fix for my bald tires...
Thanks to UA-cam. I replaced the relay and temp switch in about 15 min.
Just need a cutting took, or Dremel. Easy as hell
And smart too Tks from Ny 👍🏻
