So, my friend and I did a much cruder version of this in high school. We wanted a china cymbal, but the school wouldn't provide one, so we took the top cymbal from a pair of shitty brass hi hats and kicked the shit out of it until it sounded really trashy. It actually ended up sounding really good for a makeshift china cymbal haha. Sorry high school music department, but we had to do what we had to do 🤷♂️

Turkic people pursue sound extension, the cymbals made as smooth as possible. But beyond that, the alloy ratio is important. Chinese make cymbal alloy, use 13% to 16% tin since 3000 years ago, is very different from the Turkic cymbals

Ignoring the fact that most modern devices like laptops and phones have decent microphones, the fact remains that a proper sound source will still sound like itself when recorded and played back even on a phone or even something as random as an old Kodak digital camera from 2005…
I think trashy is an actual adjective that drummers use to describe the sound of a cymbal (more specifically a China cymbal). I'm not a drummer so don't quote me on this.
Oh man you put way too much effort into this. when i was 12, i just flipped my cracked millenium crash upside down and hit it until it bent properly. Worked perfectly and the sound was just as great as the brand new millenium crash had had. :)
It was a straight fold, with part of the cymbal pointing upward. He tried to get Paiste to make a cymbal with the same sound, but they refused. I'd buy it if someone made it.
A better way would have been using a ball pien hammer. Because those are exactly what those are used for and you probably would have been able to find tune the sounds a little bit better. But hey man creativity knows no bounds good job bro

I get what your trying to say here but I've been in the trades for close to 15 years now and I have never shattered a hammer of any kind and I've smashed pretty much everything you can imagine with a hammer.
I did this once and it turned out to be my favorite china ever. I also drilled extra holes and put 3 inch drywall screws in the holes for extra trash rattle

I have an old drum set with one cymbal(besides hi hat) and it’s basically a thick tin sheet, and it has small bends on the edge and is missing the felt to support it 😢
Good idea actually, but I'm sure it could be done a little better to where it's done more evenly. Instead of using a hammer use channel-locks and pull up on the edge/flange evenly all the way around. You would have to make a full line so you could line the teeth up perfectly everytime. But, cool idea.
next time grab a butane torch and anneal it before bending, then reheat dunk and swirl in water. will help prevent cracks. they might not be there now but with use it will stress crack.. ask me how i found out.
Bro this happened with the first cymbal I got I 5 inch crack down the middle and whenever I hit it it turns into a china, moral of the story, if your new to drumming don’t beat the absolute shit out of the cymbals cause it will break them
Next time you want to hammer your cymbal and actually have those differences in density… Don’t hammer on a carpet. You can beat the living crap out of any cymbal and it will become a trash crash. I’ve got like 6 of these stupid projects and they always end up in the bag, not on the kit. Build yourself some acoustic baffles, or wide- band absorbers. Waaay more fun.
Drill holes circle ov holes and put a nut and a washer in the top and a washer and a lock nut at the bottom , and leave about 3mm movement gap , sounds orsum

I have one of those and I do love it but it just breaks after using it a few times. Well that's what you get for using low-end cymbals.
For working metal, use a Ball Pean hammer. The claw hammer you used is too brittle. You're lucky you didn't put a sliver into your eyeball.

It's a piece of sheet bronze on a carpet, there is absolutely no way that's even an issue. Not any more than it's an issue with mild steel nails
