WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Forcing religion on children should be a crime, period.
yes any religion! The worst danger to man is stupidity and the resulting belief that only THEY believe in the only true god and the rest are all wrong, have no morals and must be converted by perverted missionaries who are really only interested in "saving" their own souls
Well, consider the consequences of giving the government power to punish teaching specific beliefs. What happens when governors and congressmen who don't agree with you get elected with that power? If more Christians get elected, teaching Atheism, logic, or reason could be declared a crime. Would we then have to make a list of "approved" beliefs that we can teach kids?
As bad as religious indoctrination is, allowing the government to criminalize teaching certain beliefs would be a terrible precedent to set with many unforeseen consequences. Carefully consider what kind of power you would like to give the government, and imagine how it might be used by people who don't agree with you.
Edit: After all, the title of this video is "Atheists Are a Danger to the Youth". That goes to show you what many other people think, and what ideas they would like to ban teaching of.
BRAIN WASHING IS A SICKNESS.
@Tiberiu Farcas You make a decent point
How do you enforce that though?
*"Does your god see those children starving?"*
_"Yes."_
*"Does it have the power to feed them?"*
_"Let me change the subject before I realize how evil my god would be if it existed."_
I think she already know deep down. But she needs to attack others so that she does not think about it to much. The more you fight the more entrenched you get often times.
Omg your so right
@@MrDark-fm3vr Nice bit of preaching about a fairy-tale. Can you prove your myth true, or are you just going to keep asserting you're right?
Why doesn't your god feed those poor, starving children the real food that they need? Why does it sit back and just let them die? This is the same god that directly smote er and onan, but didn't kill hitler…
@@MrDark-fm3vr jesus fucking christ you are delusional. The fallacy you have spit upon this comment section is by far worse than anything Ruth Ann has said in the video. Keep your head in the sand and beg God to bring you to his exclusive kingdom.
@@MrDark-fm3vr so if I rape and murder, God can save me at any time? Why wouldn't we all just "sin" if we can just repent on our death beds. Makes perfect sense.
She is a perfect example of why religion is dangerous.
I agree fact she hear voices she mentally ill
In all respect, everyone is religious. Even atheists have beliefs about the origin, destiny, morality and purpose of the human race. Atheism even has its own millionaire preachers. Is atheism a danger to the youth? It depends on whether you want your children around amoral people, as atheists have no morals.
Do not get me wrong. I am not saying that atheists are not nice people, it is just that they do not have a moral law. The best an atheist can come up with is a 'social contract.' Yet, how can an atheist ever use the word 'should'? Why 'should' someone be nice to other people? Is a child molestor 'evil'? In order for someone to break a law, the law must exist. Yet, without God, society or the individual decides their own moral law. If each person or society creates their own morality, then morality loses any definition. That means that drug cartels, with their social contracts, and violent gangs, with their particular moral values, are just as acceptable as whatever rules you live by. Since amorality is the biggest danger the world faces, atheists are, indeed, a danger to youth.
You cannot say that I did not warn you. God will judge the world in righteousnesss. How will you do? If you have lied and stolen, you will be tried as a lying thief. Heaven is real, but so is hell. Since God is love, eternity without God is hell. Yet, Christ died on a Cross so that, just by asking, you may know Him. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
I'm not afraid of going to Heaven, are you?
@@MrMarco855 I don't believe there is one.
@@MrMarco855 Will you go to heaven? It is perfect in moral character. No one will lie or steal from you there. Do you see the problem? If you have ever lied or stolen, you are a lying thief and not fit for those streets of gold. Yet, Christ died on a Cross so that we may know Him. Unless you are born again, you will not enter. Hell is torment. You cannot say that I did not warn you: you must be born again! Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

Its criminal that religions do this to people. Making them preach things they don't understand, demonizing others outide of their circle, and teaching these to our children. Thanks religion for circumcising my pp.
Just remember what multiple religions covered up the systematic rape of children all over the world. In France the Catholic Church abused over 200,000 children and has asked for forgiveness but the church is still protecting the rapist.

Idiots aren't they?
I stopped at “Would you kill 25 people if god told you to” and her answer was “no, because I am not strong enough”. Even if it was just a defense mechanism to avoid saying no, I really hope she has a good therapist.
I know its been a year, but I just saw this....
I really like people I know trying to convert me, and they say something stupid like "if you dont believe in God, whats to stop you from murdering people?" What the f***?
So, I have to ask them "Is your gawd the only thing keeping you from murdering innocent people?'
The funny thing is, Ive seen several actually stand there contemplating the question while im thinking "NO dumbass! The correct, immediate response is NO, of course not'
Religion is a disease of the brain, most cannot cure it
No, but many have been murdered in the name of science. Injecting black prisoners with poison without their knowledge, operating on people without using anesthetic to see their reaction, human cloning, nuclear weapons, chemical weapons and other freaky shit, all in the name of science.
I agree, maybe you should hide in the basement so that she doesn't get you.
It's weird because she knows it's not right to kill innocent people even if god told her to but she thinks it would be morally right to do it because it's god. She's literally calling her natural sense of morality weakness because someone told her god is more moral than what she knows is right.

Explain it to me.
@@MrMarco855The usual answer to the question why didn’t god create earth with no suffering, evil, etc. is free will. Well if there is none of those things in heaven and there’s also free will, then that argument makes no sense. He’s clearly perfectly capable of making a place devoid of those things while preserving our free will and chose not to and that’s doesn’t seem like a a “good god”. It’s pretty simple.
@@RTR_87 We're here for a reason, it's a learning experience. In the next life we'll understand the things we don't understand now. There has to be a balance in everything, choices to be made, lessons to be learned. We were given the gift of life, none of us earned or deserve it. We were given a few rules to live by, advice for any eventuality and the free will to disobey/ignore all of it. If we follow the rules we gain eternal bliss. I'm not complaining, I think it's more than I deserve.
By the way, I can guarantee you and everyone else, there is an afterlife. It was proven to me and nobody, not science or anything other, can explain away the experience I shared with my wife and her mother. It involved supernatural circumstances. I asked if it was okay to share the experience with others. I was told it was okay but I shouldn't try to force anyone to believe.
@@MrMarco855 Meh, I’m not convinced it’s necessary for people to suffer to “learn lessons”. If god is all powerful, we could easily be born with these “lessons” hard wired in to us.
I completely disagree that we don’t “deserve” to be here and I think that’s some EXTREMELY toxic nonsense the church has drilled into Christians. I didn’t ask to be here so I don’t have to “praise” some deity for giving me something I never asked for. The idea that I’m somehow evil because someone ate an apple they weren’t supposed to eat is probably the most absurd thing I’ve ever believed.
Lastly, I’m happy for you that you had a spiritual experience but there are over 5000 different religions who claim to have the exact same experience with their chosen deity. How do we know who’s right?

You must have the devil's bible.
Why do the religious always use "I understand what you are saying" while meaning "I'll just ignore what you said and continue my rant"?

Because the need to persuade is greater than the need to change. They also usually don't really get the argument. They also feel their personal experiences trump any other piece of information that might say otherwise.
Same reasons Flat Earthers use “Cuz Reasons.”

@Charles Carpenter Atheism is a position on only one issue, whether or not God or gods exist. This is relevant because it points out a huge fallacy in your reasoning.
Atheist or A-Theist means "a person who lacks a belief in God." It doesn't have doctrines or rules, it's just a lack of belief. If you don't believe in a god but you're still spiritual, you're still technically an Atheist. There are plenty of people in the world and throughout history who lack a belief in any gods and have done something bad. Your problem is that you are looking at Atheism as the CAUSE of that wrong-doing, and this is absolutely cringe-worthy because it's not like your argument hasn't been made before, and even most Christians know it's a bad-faith argument and stay well away from it in proper debate.
I assume you're speaking of Stalin, who btw was a Seminarian (a subsect of the Roman Catholic Church). Stalin was an opportunist who enacted anti-Christian policies as a political power move against the notion of the Tsar. If you would like more on that, check out some of what Hitchens has to say about Stalin.
But the argument that he did what he did was "in the name of Atheism" is preposterous and intellectually dishonest. Not only was Stalin himself religious, but even if he wasn't and was indeed an Atheist, it wouldn't matter. And the reason is because Atheism is not a doctrine or rule-set telling someone how to act. It is ONLY a position on whether or not God or gods exist.
You can do something bad in the name of Christianity and other religions because you can actually point to rules and doctrines in those belief systems that tell them to do said "bad thing." Such a thing does not exist in Atheism. Need proof? See just a short list below of different kinds of Atheists with moral or political positions that are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from one another, and will result in a difference in opinion on how to act morally just in those groups:
Nihilism
Antinatalism
Humanism
Taoism
Buddhism
I hope you'll at least take this as an opportunity to educate yourself and understand the difference between a doctrine-filled system of beliefs, and a "descriptive word" about a lack of belief.
@Charles Carpenter Again, Atheism does not tell you to serve yourself. Atheism does not tell you to do ANYthing, and it CAN'T. It isn't a guided system of beliefs or doctrine. "Atheist" is a position on only ONE specific issue, whether or not a God or gods exist.
Secular Humanism is an Atheistic worldview that is about doing what is best for man-kind and acting morally towards your fellow humans, for instance. This already upsets your theory that Atheism says serve yourself... By definition, Atheism is incapable of telling you to serve yourself since, and apparently I must re-iterate, it is a position on ONE specific issue: Whether or not God or gods exist.
Note: This is NOT the same for Christianity or other religions. A religion, also by definition, IS a set of core beliefs guided by doctrines/rules/principles.
Charles Carpenter 1. can you proof that more people died due to communism than to religion? Sounds like an outrageous claim to me
2. what the fuck does communism have to do with religion? Communism and Marxism in it self include no statement about Theism at all. Those are theories on economies and sociality.
Your statement is so stupid and stinks of american christian propaganda... "Communism is the most evil thing in the world and thus a scapegoat for everything." Also isn't it funny, that uninformed americans tend to call everything they disagree with or what is diffrent to how their country is working communist.
@Charles Carpenter Listen here, moron. Atheism isn't a belief system, the reason Churches were taken out during communistic rule was for a power move. Christianity however and other theistic claims directly told their people to fight for holy land and for their religions. It is irrelevant how many people died due to communism because their deaths weren't inspired by Atheism, because Atheism is simply a rejection of a claim due to not meeting its burden of proof. You're using a fallacious argument by saying that the cause of the deaths during communistic times was Atheism, when in reality it wasn't, it was Stalin and his circle.
Charles Carpenter wring. It was communist rule not atheistic rule. There is no such thing as “atheistic rule” because I’ve already outlined that atheism is a rejection of a claim, not a belief system with doctrines and morals/values

lights473 "Atheism is a cancer that is spreading throughout the world and increasing through each generation. The cancer that is atheism is literally ALL OVER THE PLACE."
Except that it's literally NOT all over the place. It's almost NOWHERE (less than 10% of US population is atheist/agnostic, even though you are correct that it's increasing, mostly because people are smarter today). Whenever atheism is brought up theists fight it tooth and nail even when used to promote positivity and secular humanism, while their religious views are ALL OVER THE PLACE, even in unconstitutional places like public schools and courts. It's pathetic.
We all know the true cancer is religion because it encourages people to avoid logic and scrutiny, and just appeals to emotional faith based on what was taught as a kid. Atheism is just a position of logic that says your claims about god are unverifiable and hence there is no reason to buy into it. It's not evil, it's not about sin, it's about holding faith based claims to the same standards of scrutiny that we hold everything else (ie fairies, werewolves, vampires, aliens, etc etc).

Be nicer to the theists. They just can't belief their mamy and dady lied to them. They are loyal to their parents and community, that is not bad. Just not using the brain they've got (from god as they belief).
And it is very convenient to fill up every thing you don't understand with "god", specialy when you are not so smart.
Write your opinion but don't call religion a cancer, let them do that to us, it's their best way to lose the debate.
Using their logic against them is our best way to win the debate, because it's flawed, and they don't accept an other viewpoint.

Ruthann: The Bible contains morals, except when I find them inconvenient. Then the morals become grey area.
For a set of objective morals there sure is a lot of "grey area".
Why wouldn't God spell everything out very clearly in black & white? I mean, it is just our eternal souls which are at stake...
The Bible is absolute until it gets in the way of my dominionist agenda, then it's just a suggestion.
If I was God I'd make sure every human had a copy of the 10 commandment printed on the back of their left hand, written in their most tongue. This way it can't be changed over time to fit some humans agendas, can't be mistranslated, everyone would have access to it (even if they don't even know who God actually is yet) and people still should have all the free will they have now, only that they know that God actually is a thing.

The woman said that she prayed and prayed and prayed to God to save her little girl. What happened? Despite the doctor's best efforts, the little child died on the operating table. This was after the girl's mother prayed all night long to ask God to save her child. Why didn't God save that little girl? Because the best answer is that there is no God.
It bugs me when people say "Religious beliefs need to be respected." No, they don't. Respect is based on admiration. I tolerate other people's beliefs, but I'm not required to respect them. Grab a dictionary and look up the word respect.
I'm not going to respect belief in a thing which has not been proven, especially when said belief threatens me with _anything_ for not being gullible enough to swallow it. Especially if said punishment also has no evidence for its existence.
Any thing that comes with an invisible threat incentive attached should be a thing you should be wary of.
christians swallow the threat because it comes with an empty promise that their consciousness will survive the death of their brains and will float away to a realm that can not be detected where they can do nothing more than kiss the ass of an evil celestial dictator for the rest of eternity and they like being sycophants, and the only price is swallowing a load of bronze age mythology and the bad laws of backwards savages, and the myths based on those savage's poorly translated "prophesies" and bad poetry that became the new testament.

Though I didn't read your whole piece (ouf), I must disagree with you on a point... The USA and most Anglo-Saxon Nations were blessed by the God of Abraham; promised was a great nation and a company of nations...
Mainly because of those nations and their blessings (mostly unmerited), has the world prospered the way it has; not perfectly, but still, the advancements are staggering.
Settlers settled and grew into a great nation; a promised land, and not a stolen land.
No Phil, it was stolen. There were real human beings here before the white man and his god showed up. It was their land, their home and our forefathers took it from them in so many ways. Many of us still believe we were never "blessed" by any deity, and certainly not the one that supports the ownership of other human beings.
