WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I get the feeling Eugene hasn't had many conversations with nobelievers where he didn't control the situation. You can see him trying all the tricks that work on his flock and being baffled that they aren't working.

Yep. A lot of people lack the critical thinking tools and education necessary to deal with preachers like this one.
The saddest part is that the pastor thinks he's casting pearls when they're actually cheap fakes.
Its deeper than that. We assign value, we arbitrate beauty. A pearl is ugly to a person who only enjoys dark colors, a pearl is valueless unless it is made an idol of material possession.
To caste these pearls is to make, and abide by, a shallow assumption. This is what happened here in the vid to prove that.

I saw a man rise from the dead in my church when I was a Christian. He had a heart attack. The paramedics were called, the congregation prayed. The medics shocked him and he raised from the dead. This is still claimed to be a miracle and that God raised him from death twenty years later. God got the credit and the medics never got a look in.
The comedian Daniel sloss has a really good bit about this. The bit is titles something like "thanking God instead of doctors"
"If I remember correctly, you came to ME for help, I diagnosed you, and prescribed a treatment. In fact, if I remember even further back, He's the one that gave you cancer. Why? Hmmm, maybe because you're an ungrateful fuck." Loved his expressions in that bit.
That always happened in 'Champion the Wonder Horse.'. Rebel, the dog in the TV programme, did all the hard work, arranged the rescue services, generally saved the day and if he was lucky, had a bark or two in the last seconds. The blinking horse who just shook his main, neighed like an idiot (well a horse) and just happened to be in the general area had a whole TV production with his name on it. Oh the injustice! It used to really bug me as a kid and now I see God is doing the same. Naughty chap!
Shocks don't actually restart hearts. In fact, they work by stopping a heartbeat-a weird, problem heartbeat, that is. A powerful electric shock can actually CTRL-ALT-DELETE a heart that's pumping irregularly or too fast, in hopes of resetting the heart to its correct rhythm. Only chest compressions can do that (or direct heart compressions if the person is being operated on and the chest is already open.
The whole shocks restarting hearts thing is actually a fiction.

Reminds me of this _true_ story:
Rachel is a very religious woman. One day, a local river bursts its banks and floods her town. The mayor warns everyone to leave. Everyone panics and starts evacuating except for Rachel, who says God will save her.
Soon, the water has filled her first floor, and Rachel goes up to a second story window. A rescuer passes by in a rowboat and offers to help Rachel leave, but she says no - God will save her.

It's so amazing how unintelligent people can become when they simply don't have, nor exercise, the skill of rational thinking.

Lying is actually a significant stage in a child's cognitive development. A child's first lie should be celebrated! It indicates that (s)he has acquired a sense of self and agency within reality and is exploring the manipulation of reality. The extent to which this person will amend reality in future and the extent to which they will do so to socially useful or socially destructive ends remains to be developed, of course.
There's a big difference between telling a lie and knowing a lie. I tell our janitor at work he does a good job of cleaning, knowing very well he sucks at it. I told him a lie knowing I did.

I have no problem saying I lie today, to save myself....like when a girlfriend says her friend needs help moving Saturday ‘Sorry I’ve got to drive to the next town to pick up work supplies can only do it Saturday’....I have no problem with that I don’t think it’s ‘sinful’....it’s a far bigger sin to ask me to help move! It's even worse than that. According to the Genesis account, God created Adam and Eve without the capacity to understand the concept of sin. They had no "knowledge of good and evil" and yet he killed them and condemned their progeny to eternal torment due to choices they were not even aware they were making.
You are not being punished for Adam's disobedience per se. We have just inherited a sinful nature. The punishment any unbeliever receives will be because of their own sin.

Curiosity is removed by shame very early. Once thats gone its a lot easier to avoid questions. I remember as a kid being told my faith wasn't strong enough any time i had questions. I quit asking but kept my curiosity anyway, so as an adult I started asking again.😊

You are correct, Eugene seems to have a bad case of cognitive dissonance. I believe it is because he was abused in his childhood to believe in hell, heaven and a just god that condemns us.
I believe AGrayPhantom is referring to the genocide committed by the god of the Israelites during the exodus and reconquering of the promised land. Good and evil can be judged by the harm they do or the help they do to others. This is not absolute or objective, just as the morals given from the bible and religion are not absolute or objective. The religious get around the Bible by telling us we are not interpreting it correctly. That is a big cop-out. The Bible says what it says. It is simplistic for a simplistic people working in the bronze age. I hope you've noticed my explanation of good and evil was ontological, showing the relations between the concepts and categories in a subject area.

I’m playing Final Fantasy 7 and I just raised Tifa from the dead using a Phoenix Down...resurrection happens and I CAN prove it. But seriously, I’m surprised that they let that one slide.

My experience of a church pastor or priest "defeating" an atheist is simply preaching at the pulpit & not confronting any at all. Essentially _preaching at the choir,_ lobbing insults & cursing them as the _choir_ applaud or shout utterations like _"Amen!!",_ _"Praise the Lord!",_ or _"Jesus saves!"_

Guys, I absolutely loved this video.
You both remained patient and calm despite Eugene's clear contradictions and evasiveness. You asked clear, simple questions with an obvious conclusion yet Eugene still avoided that conclusion somehow.
However, some of his long silent pauses make me hope that Eugene may actually *think* about some of the questions you asked and it is refreshing to come across a Christian who is prepared to reason as Eugene did.

My journey to disbelief started when I was a kid. I went to a Vatican 2 catholic school and had religion classes every day as well as a high grade standard in all subjects including science. One day this little thought popped into my head ‘How do we know Jesus was really the son of god and not just some guy with delusions of grandeur?’ It was funny at the time, but as time went on it started coming up more and more frequently. Once every other year, every year, a few times a year, once a month, so on and so forth. The more I learned in all my other school subjects the more the answer seemed to be ‘nobody knows at all.’ By my sophomore or junior year of high school I suddenly realized I was deconverting...and I didn’t mind.

'But, says Man, the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and, by your own arguments, you don't. QED.' There was one little moment near the end that made me so happy - when he had a very clear hesitation, where he was seriously entertaining the idea and what follows from it...
I realize the subsequent affirmation of atrocity took the attention after that, but don't forget that little moment - there was real, substantive thinking happening in that moment.

I like this guy, he really is sincere, polite and mostly honest. I think calling in made him realize a lot of his own logical inconsistencies in his own religious views.

I've always felt like God is a narcissist. It's like, if you don't love me and believe in my book, I swear I'll burn you forever! Yet these people call him a loving God? Surely none of us would burn someone forever, right? So if we're made in the image of God, why is he more violent than we are? This has always baffled my mind.

This reminds me of my previous life in a city by that name... Eugene is a city that's changed a lot over the past 30 years. The Baptist fundamentalists from the old near-separate state of Jefferson have moved up into Lane County...for one thing. Fundamentalism in Eugene is alive and well apparently...I disagree with the "pastor"...He claims all people "sin"...no. I don't. This is a claim that went unchallenged in the discussion. Sin is often defined as an offense against a presumed "god". If the pastor cannot demonstrate the existence of a "god", there is no "sin". Men like him threatened me as a child...until I learned that it is impossible to inherit responsibility for wrongdoing.
BTW the bible states clearly that the "deity" invented evil.
So the public can know it is not all ignorance, darkness and unthinking reliance on ancient literature in Lane County, there is also an excellent University of Oregon, in Eugene (sic) and the good Lane County Historical Society, among many others. I am a native of Klamath Falls and a fortunate graduate of the U of O.
