WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

Theists can't comprehend that if "the book says so" isn't a compelling argument for any other religious text, why would it be for theirs.
It’s funny because at about 13 or so I came up with it myself, ‘What’s out there to verify what’s in just this 1 book?’ and I started doubting.
Not only that but their non•comprehension is intentional, aggressive and based solely on their feelings. I could even argue that a lot of these folks are mentally ill.
Also, the funny thing about these theists who call in is they listen to these atheists podcasts on the regular

13, I was 6 years old and it matters not a jot, at this time I was thinking none of this comports to reality, (not in those words, but as a kid) questioning everything, I went to St John's school.
My schools affiliated church was literally across the road, I went to Sunday school and all that jazz, I had no choice whatsoever but to attend the religious indoctrination system of beliefs and stories, you know harvest festival, noahs ark and baby jesus in a manger, school plays etc etc, the greatest thing you have sir which eludes the multitudes is you're a critical thinker and a sceptic as far as I'm aware, age is irrelevant. You either accept things with 0 warrant or you don't. I just wish others were as deeply questioning as us.

Ever notice women generally dont call in here?
It's definitely more men, but you do get women.
There are a few explanations for that:
1) Most religions treat women as secondary or lesser than men. As such, many theist women have a feeling of modesty/don't feel as comfortable when it comes to arguing. If you were told from the moment you existed that you were the cause of all evil, as Genesis would have you believe, chances are you're less likely to grow up with confidence to defy others. Again, it DOES happen, but it's rarer.
2) Women, in general, are not as likely to argue online/over the phone with strangers. It's why comments sections are mostly dudes arguing with each other as well.
3) Host gender and personality tend to draw in similar people. When it's a woman or even a man who is more amicable (like Forrest), you tend to see more women callers.
4) let's be honest, men tend to have much dumber ideas than women, and people love to see idiots get smacked down. So, the screeners probably put through a lot more idiots than regular people (even though we do all still enjoy real honesty in callers, it's definitely more fun seeing dishonest douchebags get put in their place.
Every sentence this caller makes demonstrates he does not have a single clue what the words he is using mean.

I think that the biggest issue is that theists avoid the logic that the claim that someone was a superhero is diffrent from a claim that someone simply was. There is no problem in assuming that there was a man who claimed to be a son of god. The issue begins with the magic stuff. We require evidence for magic stuff not for 'there was a man'. And they go: There was a man because people wrote about him in books -> thus he is magic -> thus god.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. If you mention healing the sick or walking on water, virgin birth or coming back to life being impossible, they don't see any problem with it. Only the son of god could do that, despite not scientific evidence that any of that is possible, add in the fact almost all religions have the same virgin birth nonsense at the core. It's genuinely like banging your head on a brick wall.
Exactly. They fail to see the tremendous leap from "a guy was born in the Jerusalem, traveled around gathering a following while preaching doomsday stuff/heresy and then was eventually murdered for that heresy to "yea he also performed miracles and he's the son of God".
The amount of differce in those two statements is huge and require vastly different levels of evidence.

Yes 100% agreed. Lets say that we have to decide if Plato was a person in the real world. I have no problem to accept it. If someone says dude... There was no Plato but many smart people that created many diffrent stuff that was described to one person. Okey. No problem. I can read about it and it does not influence my life. If someone says Plato was just fiction for inspire something. - sure, that still is something logical that could be. But if you claim that Plato was an alien/ a bunch of cats in human suit/ undead necromancer and so on. Then the problem begins. Theists don't recognize that people don't have even evidence that Jesus was real. He could be simply a story of a hero that was a collection of diffrent stories. We have such stories. Like lets say Hercules and his amazing godlike adventures. The diffrence is that some charecters are non-magical. And making a historical claim for non-magical people is not so... Bizzare.

When it comes to people who believe you can prove the Bible by using the Bible I wonder what they would say to someone who says they can prove the the Tipitaka (buddhism’s holy book) by useing the Tipitaka or one can prove the Vedas (Hindu holy books) by using the Vedas. Or for that matter prove Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health (scientologies de facto holy book) by using Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. The hypothetical defenders of the above books are using the same reason as those that believe they can prove the Bible by using the Bible.

The big H was a post WW2 excercise in propaganda designed to demonise the National socialists and thereby justify the long term occupation of Germany by US troops.
Plus we have the remains of destruction camps, we have survivors, we have pictures, we have mass graves, we have documentation of what went on. We have *verifiable evidence* for the Holocaust.

Even if we would grant that the gospels were written by the claimed writers it would be very strange Matthew and Luke copied huge parts of Mark.
That would mean at least 2 of the 4 gospels weren't individual "attestations" which would weaken the claim.
Let alone the fact there are 4 versions of Mark 16 with a total of 3 different empty tomb/resurrection stories!

Except...we have thousands of independent sources dating back to basically the exact time it happened, that all tell basically the same exact story with differences being subtle, but important. We have not just a handful of firsthand accounts, but more than we know what to do with by not just the victims, from the perpetrators as well.
The attestation itself written by the *actual* witness goes a long way.

People can have an internal bias that limits their understanding. Partly this can be due to a lack of internal honesty. People tend to believe what they want to believe. Many people develop their lives around religion and can not gain an external view. Proof against faith can be distressing for some people. Religion often fails to develop critical thinking skills.
According to the book, humanity was created some 4k years before the coming of Jesus. Why, oh why could gawd not just wait another couple thousand years, knowing that man would have created better ways of recording evidence??? 🤷🏽♂️

There have been multiple different books by multiple different authors that have taken place over decades. Each of them have some differences, but overall we can look at the similarities in the books and establish that a few things are true. There is a man named Peter Parker. He lives in New York City. He was bit by a spider. It granted him special abilities that most humans do not have. We know this to be true, because another group of people who would benefit from people not supporting him also wrote about him (DC/Marvel crossover events).
Therefore, because there are multiple attestations, some of which come from people who would benefit from him not existing, we can confirm that Marvel comics are true and that Peter Parker is Spider-Man.
This is what this argument sounds like.
I really appreciated the callers willingness to own his potential biases and the hosts willingness to help the caller at each step of his honest exploration on why he thinks he is using the same standard of evidence in his religious beliefs as in his day to day life.

Why do theists like the gentleman caller in this video maintain their beliefs despite the good reasons for leaving said religion? They talked about societal influence is a good one but I would ask a theist.

The psychological damage religion does to people makes it very difficult to leave. The reason why organizations like Recovering From Religion exist is also the reason why so many people remain in religion.

It seems curious that God would author a book, transmit it to the minds of men, who would then transcribe by hand what they received, make copies by hand of those transcriptions, make copies of the copies by hand, translate and transcribe the copies by hand into several languages, form committees to decide what to keep and throw out, and then interpret what remains 10,000 different ways.
And even more curious that after doing that, god gets mad at man for having the wrong copies and interpretations
…and even more curious is how this god sent himself to earth yet instead of dedicating his early life to transcribing or writing an accurate coherent message which would become the bible he decides being a carpenter is more important.
Circular reasoning is quite common comming from theists, the argument “I believe the Bible is true because the Bible says it is true” does not make any sense to a atheist, it's like "that piece of rock prooves creation by being there."
Basic problem must be - somewhere - that theists simply cant understand the concept of atheism and it being a individual/personal position rather then some kind of organised and controlled collection of people. Assume this coming from the theists being a part of a group (congregation) with identical faith and religious identity.
As a atheist i dont identify with all other atheists, i might agree with them regarding the god position but they might have other views on other things i dont like or agree with. Actually never discussed faith through my (very soon) 65 years old life but could be living in Sweden, a very secular country.
The contrast between talking about aliens versus Jesus is at the end of it no one is threatening your soul with eternal damnation :)
@john Aliens aren't promising eternal bliss in God's Kingdom of Heaven either. The threat you speak of is no more than the threat of the death penalty or life in prison here in this life if you break man's law. It's no more than what a helpless, innocent infant goes through when murdered by its own mother in the womb. Reward is meaningless if it's not accompanied by the possibility of consequences.

When science is proven wrong ,how does it still claim a victory?
Specifically pls elucidate, from my understanding science can and does shift its understanding via new data. Science isn't dogmatic it learns and isn't afraid to adjust its models.
After all science never tries to prove itself right ,rather it tries to prove itself wrong ,only when it can't it sticks to the current model.

"Scientists Turn Dinosaur Scale into a Feather." There are so many things wrong with this one. This was the claim made. And the study actually reveals that first, it wasn't a dinosaur scale, it was a reptile's. Lastly, they didn't turn it into any kind of feather at all, not a modern feather that birds have, or the wooly, fluffy kind that prehistoric dinosaurs with feathers had. What they actually did is discover that a feather and a scale both have keratin in them, and that this MUST mean that one evolved from the other. Included in the study was a claim that, and I quote, "Scientists think they found a sort of key that may act as some sort of switch that could have allowed a scale turn into a feather."
Well, that's a far cry from turning a scale into a feather now, isn't it?
The other one will be the one brought up in the Hovind vs. "Professor" Dave debate where Dave claims that (Venter?) created life from non life in a lab. Well, we all know that wasn't true, even Kent knew it and said what really happened. He took something that was living, and another thing that was living, and transplanted one part of a previously living thing into the other. That isn't creating life from non life.
The fossilized remains of Lucy were faked. They were assembled incorrectly and many of the bones were made up of tiny fragments and then "recreated" with plaster to make the whole bone. Lucy also contained bones that didn't belong to her.
Scientists claim that humans and gorillas share 90-95%+ of the same DNA. Well, how can that be if only about 60% of the DNA code has been decoded?

He fought as a general of the Jewish rebels against Rome but was captured and enslaved by Vaspasian, then a Roman general, who later became emperor. He was subsequently freed and collaborated with the Romans. His history, The Jewish War, was written around 75CE. You are correct that he was not a witness to Jesus.

I could collect stories about Santa. They could all come from different authors from different countries from different times. It would be a compendium of Santa stories, all independently written about the same person performing the same magical feats. Does this mean that a jolly fat man flies around the world once a year eating cookies and delivering gifts to good boys and girls? Clearly not. All it means is that there was a popular story about such a character, and that many people from many cultures were aware of the story. Perhaps they were inspired by a real person, but given the fantastical elements of the story that dont seem to reflect anything in reality, the stories no longer reflect actual history.

Most of the Bible is story-telling with little facts contained within. Some of the writings are downright deranged and delusional.
@johnfox Things can be factual whether believed or not. You'd have to have verification to claim something isn't factual, just as atheists ask for proof of God's existence. The Bible states many things as facts, if you challenge those things and declare them to be false, you take on the burden of providing evidence. It's one thing to say you're not certain or you doubt the sincerity of something, but you're making an emphatic allegation and what is that based upon?
The holocausts was well documented by the Germans themselves. Cases were made in multinational courts with information and witnesses from many nations and very well documented. In multiple languages. The bibles was largely documented in Greek which was not even the Jewish language. And many of the witnesses were not well documented. Romans were actually very good at keeping written records. But extremely little supports earl Chrisianity.

The conditions for forming snowflakes are all the same but no snowflake has ever formed that was exactly identical to another snowflake. The history of replication errors that had brought a non-living self-replicating molecule to the event of abiogenesis had not been repeated in any other self-replicating molecule including the sister molecule that the abiogenesis molecule had split from. Regardless of all of the conditions that had existed for facilitating the genesis of life, abiogenesis had been one-time genetic event that had nothing to do with causation from environmental conditions. THAT IS WHAT SCIENCE SHOWS. A one-time genetic event that had required a unique genetic history in order to have been brought to that point is no more likely to occur anywhere else in the universe than it had been likely to occur again here on earth. The universe is not here for life and there's no reason that the universe should not be lifeless just as it once had been far longer than the life it has now and shall someday be again for far, far, longer than the life it has now shall survive. Sci-fi fantasies of alien life will never change the observable scientific facts pertaining to the improbability of abiogenesis. Outside of the earth, the observable universe is lifeless and there's absolutely no reason that the rest of the unobservable universe shouldn't be just as lifeless. Reality doesn't care for our desire to not be alone.

Dear atheists: the same thing is true for many things we've been taught and believe in. Did Columbus land on these shores in 1492? Atheists believe that, based solely on the story told by Columbus, or maybe there was no Columbus? It's only written in a book. All other accounts are based upon the original, but there were no eyewitnesses, other than a few of his men but they had the same reason to lie as he did. Or maybe nobody lied except the original author of the Columbus fairy tale? There are no native American witness stories documented and authenticated..................................... I'll even bet some of you naive atheists believe that we landed on the moon.

You may be thinking logically in your head, but you are not doing a good job of communicating over text. Your comments do not follow consistent grammatical structure. You do not use enough punctuation. You are using run-on sentences. We can't get a feel for what you are even trying to say at all. That is what we call word salad.
If you want to have an honest conversation, stop trying to sound profound and just speak like you would to somebody on the street. State your claim, give the necessary supporting evidence and arguments, and then we will try to address it. Alternatively ask a question and provide whatever necessary context. When you are done with that, go back and proofread your comments before hitting submit. Make sure things are grammatically correct so we can even understand what you are saying. It'll be probably best to start as simply as possible. Starting with a syllogism would be a very good place. Don't have your comment be six different questions and claims. Pick one thing.
For example, define "Word" as you are using it. I know you want to have some profound spiritual meaning but it doesn't mean anything to us. Give us the definition to work with so we can even talk about it.
I think what matt is missing here is that to the religious these are not extraordinary claims - and hence don't need extraordinary evidence. What the religious miss is the exact opposite of that
