Japan: We don't like how big Crash Bandicoot's eyebrows are.. let's make them smaller so he looks less crazy.
Japan with Ratchet and Clank: Let's give him big eyebrows and make him look more crazy.
Yep... seems legit..
@@katelyncarson422 did we ask
@@katelyncarson422 I missed that part where that’s my problem.
The fact that Deadlocked's suit-up cutscene was made to look like a Sentai transformation puts a smile on me.
*puts a smile on my face
there fixed it
I loved that scene.
I thought it was pretty cringe, but thats just my opinions so whatevs.
Now all we need is a Captain Quark Magical Girl transformation
go go power rangers!!!!
I like Japan's tendency to number games. Makes it much less confusing for anyone new to a franchise.
Yeah dude if I'm gonna get into a new gaming series I hate having to google "what is the order of..."
They can still have the subtitles like "Justice For All"....just add a "2" why is that so hard??
Berry Tears - Because it’s ugly!
Pheenixorphan X I don't see why sequels can't have cool titles AND a number...doesn't make much sense why we can't have both and save trouble of researching which order to start a new game in. I've never played a Rachet and Clank game so not sure what I was doing here, but no way would I decide to enter a series with 12 installments without researching which one is first.
That's to say: I'd be too lazy to bother.
Berry Tears The r&c games are also numbered for the Europe versions
I mean there's been 15 *FINAL* fantasy games.
They gave him a transformation sequence! LOL
Which only adds more time to the dev period.
Not much time. For what it is, it should be trivial for professional animators.
The weird thing is that it really doesn't fit the mood of the scene. Like, at all.
i think transformation sequence in japan is a normal think, even in real life when they change cloth, they go through transformation.
Thing about the transformation scene that people need to keep in mind (it may fit or not, never played any R&C myself) is that Tokusatsu (Kamen Rider, Garo, Sentai, Ultraman, etc) is a big thing over there. They love that stuff. Even in Anime, they usually go all out when it comes to transformations, maybe the japanese are treating R&C like an Anime or a Tokusatsu Series in that regard.
Lol he is rock Lee with hose bushy brows and anime eyes
U.S : he can look cute but he still needs to be more badass looking
Japan : he needs more cuteness but give him tick eyebrows so he can look like a tough guy!
@loiiy Sailor- Japan is a weird lot. Love em for it.
That suit transition scene, though. Should've seen that coming.
LittleKing 64 whatever floats their boats lol
That suit transition...I thought it was a stereotype of anime...but....it's real...
Those brows could rival Danny Vasquez's.
summed it up pretty perfectly
Wtf? WHAT are those!? Was Ratchet not marketable on his own? The thing really needed brows THAT bushy to sell in Japan?
Not to the localize-rs at least.
Marketers assumptions are so weird. i mean they think audiences want it but they shape what audiences want. its like saying "my child is so violent and disrespectful!" as you cuss at and mistreat your child. You shape what you make. Very very strange. Anyway, i think the brow fits with the trope they gave him, but im surprised at HOW much bushier it is. I thought it'd only be a little bit more. The black makes sense. -
Probably not. Keep in mind how you react to everything else on this channel, where Japanese games are given ridiculous changes in the name of appeal to western audiences. Marketers and localisers are just idiots is all.
@@UnknownSquid Hah, considering how well the games sold over there, I'd say the Japanese marketers and localisers were geniuses.
I had no idea Ratchet was so big in Japan.
It is kinda weird how "DragonBall" (not Z) they seemed to make it feel.
Fun fact: Ratchet's Japanese voice actress (yes, actress) is Makoto Tsumura.
Who's that
@@trevor3013 The Japanese voice actress of astro boy in the 2003 astro boy series, Takato Matsuda from Digimon, Dawn's mother in the Pokemon anime, Makoto in street fighter, and mac in the japanese dub of foster's home for imaginary friends.
The transformation sequence is kinda cool, and the revamped covers are too, but I think the changes to Ratchet were unnecessary. The head and eye size weren't too noticeable, but holy hell do those eyebrows look bad. I could understand if they were trying to make him seem stronger, but the fact that he sounds so childish really counteracts this.
Also, why couldn't they number the US versions as well? Makes it much easier to tell the order.
Zane Gandini You mean changes to Ratchet, right?
Yeah, that's what I meant.
Whats the deal with the bushy eyebrows?
They made the same to Rayman back in Smash Wii U.
julianx2rl maybe they think thick eyebrows are cuter
Démian García thick, bushy eyebrows do look kinda cute (on certsin characters)
Rock Lee
Démian García - Thicc*
Zpel et rrigt!
C Daddy I don’t remember any anime character has thick eyebrows.
Actually I might remember 1 but I don’t remember what show it was.
Ratchet sounds like a kid in the Japanese version😮
All japanesse voices tend to sound like a kid/girl, just look at Goku
And Naruto. Oh! And don't forget Kenshin.
Tbh, he kind of sounds like the Japanese voice actor for Ash Ketchum from Pokemon. At least that's how I heard it.
"all japanese voices"
...not really?
Japanese men sound like men lmao. It's just often times women are CAST to play male-characters, because they can sound more cutesy, kid-like, gentle, or elegant.
It does seem to be more popular to do that in Japan though. Here, I usually only see KIDS getting voiced by girls, as opposed to the other things
I dared not doubt it this !
3:48
We interrupt this Ratchet & Clank game to bring you Power Rangers.
Yuck, that black-bushy eyebrow looks disgusting. I wonder how it really affected the sales. I get the head and eye size but the eyebrow is just repulsive.
Dukefazon Reminds me of clowns and how in the west adults thought that kids love them.
I'm not certain how it would have effected sales but I'm sure it would have raised an eyebrow or two........it probably rustled a couple of eyebrows.
Reminds me of Kenshiro.
It's actually pretty common. For example, for us, a lot of body hair anywhere it's just.. Yuck, right?
French and Japanese people find them pretty normal and having your pubes, eyebrows or armpits shaved it's seen as weird because for these particulars it's actually part of the human body. They don't see anything wrong and in fact, see you as denying your bodies nature by shaving.
The beard, however, it's associated with laziness. Which is why you hardly see, if any, a Japanese person with a beard.
Thick eyebrows are also associated with *roughness*. Pretty sure they think the hairy something looks, the tougher it is. Why else do you think furries are popular in every media there.
for us WHO?
i hope you're talking about women.
Those Kenshiro eyebrows omg.
The henshin/transformation sequence at 3:40 was genius! Ratchet and Clank are known for using media tropes (R&C 3 Courtney Gears stands out), and to include tropes from other cultures when localising is very, very impressive.
I’m very happy that Ratchet & Clank is very successful in Japan for Insomniac, especially since Spyro didn’t do so well for them in the Japanese market.
It's such a fun franchise. I'll never understand why Sony didn't try and make him more of a mascot.
Dat thumbnail
VHSFace looks like the car wash guy from breaking bad
Ratchet's voice is the same as Matsuda Takato from Digimon Tamers. Funny.
shit i thought i recognised it!!!
Yep, it's Makoto Tsumura.
Dang
I find it weird that in the US number 2 was called "Going Commando" and the 4th game called "Deadlocked" since in Australia they are "Locked & Loaded" and "Gladiator" respectively
Finally someone knows how I feel XD
It's due to some type of censorship maybe?
@@RockinRoyaltyx3 I assume it's because "going commando" means to wear no underwear... could be the reason.
Deadlocked on the other hand I have no idea, although it doesn't sound as cool as Gladiator to me personally
@@Br0oham Probably because Deadlocked imply death?
In Switzerland, R&C Going Commando is called "Ratchet & Clank 2" and Deadlocked is called "Ratchet & Clank Gladiator"
I'm glad somebody covered this - this was a video I wanted to make at some point, but now I don't have to! Ratchet's got an interesting history in Japan, that's for sure!
Also in Japan they appeared to have the Plasma Whip replaced with a doublesided lightsaber
Ratchet looks absolutely ridiculous with the bushy eyebrows. This is one change in the U.S. I'm happy about
It's not a change in the US, it's a change in japan. Insomniac is an american studio.
Poldovico Change meaning a difference in general. I worded that poorly
Did you know Ratchet's voice actor in Japan is Mighty Atom himself Astro Boy
In Ratchet and Clank 2, the Mini-nuke is renamed to "White bomb" to remove the word 'nuke' from the game (cause yknow, hiroshima)
not sure why but these thick eye brows and giant head makes him more scary than cute. on the side note, i will never get this but i always find all the gaming ads from japan to be very weird.
Maybe the point is to be satire? idk
Ratchet looks ugly in Japan. I may love anime, but the style just looks worse in the world of Ratchet and Clank.
LSSJ Gaming I think he looks really good, I love his bushy eyebrows
the eyebrows wouldn't be so bad if they were at least the right colour.
I don't mind the slightly bigger head and eyes but the eyebrows are just.... creepy
Weeb
I didn't know that Ratchet's Henshin sequence is Japanese original cutscene.
I'm sad I've missed out on these games all my life
Also in Going Commando, Japan's version it seems to be Rathet is also darker. The stripes being more bold than faded as well as his coat being a bit more orange.
Video idea: How Spyro FAILED in Japan
Not enough eyebrows.
I would totally play through again just for the transformation sequence.
I really wish companies would stop trying to pander to us and just give us the damn game as it was designed.
6:00 Correction: neither Merc nor Green show up on the Japanese cover. That's the second player standing behind Ratchet.
why they make my man Ratchet look like the damn car wash dude from breaking bad with them thick ass eyebrows
America: Rachet Stallone
Japan: Rachet Uzumaki
Ratchet is one of my favorite series of all time, I bought the Japanese version of deadlocked to try it but I don't have a japanese PS2 yet. Fun Fact, the weapon wielded by the character behind ratchet isn't actually in the game
Those eyebrows look like big fuzzy caterpillars.
am i the only one that loves his japanese look and voice? the brows are a bit overdone but i see what theyre trying to do, it does make his appearance a lot more memorable
I love how the Ratchet and Clank game titles are subliminal dirty jokes
Japan is sorta weird when it comes to localizing western characters. In Sponge Bob, Plankton’s voice is all high pitched, however in the movie’s dub it sounds closer to what he should sound like.
At least giving plankton a high voice kind of makes sense. Japanese Patrick's voice, on the other hand, is almost unbearable to listen to due to how unfitting it sounds...
Ratchet's proportions in the later games seem a lot closer to the Japanese design, so they might not have felt the need to change them.
"Up your Arsenal" heh heh...
I want to know about the opinions of the people who played the a Japanese versions of the games first hand and know what their reaction was when they found out the US design was different. Do they prefer the original design or the Japanese design?
What happend to his voice in the Japanise version? It's so...childisch and high. I love his voice in the oryginal.
I meant the oryginal voice in English.
1:09 Japan’s cover art looks so much nicer
I played Tools of Destruction, loved it!!! 😀
SSB&AnimeCrossover - Can someone tell me the naughty referente that goes along under this amended title? Plz
RecZolSeas Yeah boi
Tools of destruction was my first and still my favorite!!
ZAD I also love the ending song!!! 😁
SSB&AnimeCrossover omg yes, I remember finishing the game when I was like 5 and the music hyped me up so much!
They might as well make Ratchet and Clank a anime
Japanese one raises an eyebrow or maybe two
I always wondered what was up with those eyebrows. I saw the japanese live action commercials as bonus footage in one of the games and I was really confused by the weird suit. Never would have guessed that that's what he actually looks like in Japan.
That Metropolis soundtrack 😫😫
The eyebrows at 2:27 are overkill lol. I can definitely see the cuteness in the changes, he's like a little fireball now.
4:50-4:52 Sumo Ratchet looks better than the Japanese Ratchet, to be honest, If only that skin affected gameplay, though
So, they pretty much made Ratchet into the car wash owner from Breaking Bad?
For Crack in time they just opened up MS Paint for his face texture, and used the paint bucket on his eyebrows.
I really wish Japan would calm down with the cuteness, but then they suddenly go full devilman on us.
I mean is there no inbetween? It’s just either cute overload of death and destruction.
Or fucking both.
Ratchet got Kenshiro eyebrows
ratchet and clank... ah another memory filled with joy and good times... except when the game crashed and I had to replay everything... there are so many of them that I didn't know of I played like 4-5 of them at most
I just realizes something : is the name "Up your *ARSE* nal" actually what I believe it to be?
ITS BUSHY BROWS SON!!! Lee and guy sensei you did a good job!!!!
The Japanese cover arts for 2 and 3 are far better than the US ones
What difference between US and Japan version of cutscene in Tools of destruction?
ok but ratchets eyebrows were thicc enough //in a aesthetic way of course// and japan made em even thiccer.
I feel cheated that we didn't get the Henshin Sequence in Deadlocked. Honestly, I feel cheated by Deadlocked in general. That game was really spinning its wheels compared to 2 and 3.
3:50
Belt: Start you engine (jingle starts play), fire all bolts
Ratchet: Henshin
Belt: Ratchet the Kamen Rider
lol,i was living on japan in the time i got ratchet 1 to deadlocked(and the other one for ps3)but i never actually noticed the difference on the eyebrows ......
Holy shit the Japanese voice is the polar opposite of the English (and also German) one.
Damn the Japanese box art looks a lot better but the eyebrows on Ratchet’s model gotta go. The thickness isnt too bad but adding all that detail to them is borderline uncanny-valley...
"Ready to kick some asteroid!", based on my quote "Ready to kick some butt! As if you're famous.".
no one gonna mention - ratchet and clank up your arsenal
Wow I really like the Japanese box art compared the the US ones.
Ratchet looks like red from angry birds.
3:48 Holy crap! We're going Power Rangers here!
Awesome! Thank you for covering this
my sides... them eyebrows are killing me xD
3:38 that's some crazy power ranger shit lol
Don't care much for those brows. But those covers are still rather cool. and its nice they number those games.
In america it has to look "badass" but in japan it has to look and feel batshit crazy
I actualy like ratchets eyes better in the Japanese version.. not so much the brows.. they are.. like why???
The shines are so distractingly bright and big
I can hardly see his pupils
I cant believe ratchet had a kamen rider transformation
hey its bushy brow sensei!
Ratchet has the NINJAGO cole eyebrows
Is Ratchet's voice actor in Japanese the same va for japanese Naruto?
The Japanese transformation looks like a power rangers transformation or something
As a Kamen Rider fan, I really appreciate the change to Deadlocked. Now THAT'S toy commercials!
Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, now ratchet and clank
Great Video!
Deadlocked has Ratchet Digivolving to Metal Ratchet Mode
Omg, I thought you were saying "Ratchet and Clank - Up your arsehole" for over half of the video
Asian language speaking countries prefer to use numbers instead of subtitles when referring to the sequel games. Need for Speed Carbon, NFS Most Wanted etc are commonly referred to as NFS 10 & NFS 9 in China. Same thing goes to CoD. Western releases have dropped the numerical title after CoD 4, while the Chinese had continued to refer to their numericals, such as CoD BO4 being referred to as CoD 15.
This is why you don't nuke countries twice
I don't think those transformation sequences from deadlocked would look out of place in the Western versions, they look pretty awesome tbh.
Do you remember the tone of some of those scenes? Your first armour you get when you wake up strapped to a table somewhere unknown with Al working on your face. Not exactly the best spot for a whimsy transformation sequence.
Another armour you get I think either right before or right after Al gets shot.
The last one you get after beating Ace Hardlight. Remember what that scene looked like?
Poldovico actually I don't because I never beat Deadlocked, just played some minutes of it, but by the way that you say the cutscenes really doesn't fit with the atmosphere of the game.
The atmosphere of the game is that you are trapped and forced to play games for your life or die while makign fun of yourself, so that cutscene looks very weird, specially considering that Ratchet is so disoriented when he wakes up that he can't even move
I wish the deadlocked japanese version skins and stuff had an english release like the other 3 games got.. sigh.. really want those armour up cutscenes.
Im guessing Courtney Gears was a huge success in Japan
idk if anyone comment on this but
clank's japanese voice actor is in jojo bizarre adventures
And ratchets Japanese VA have voiced in the Jojo games on ps2 and 3
Please do 'How Sly Cooper Is Changed In Japan'!
Those eyebrows are bigger than Lady Satsuku's and Erwin's
jesus he sounds like hes 13 in japan, he just sounded like a 25 year old dude over here
Even though I don’t agree with the changes with the eyebrows, couldn’t they have tried to make it look more natural? It looks like someone glued caterpillars onto his face lol.
Really love the anime styled hand drawn boxart a lot, especially for Japan’s version on Going Commando.
Ratchet sounding like a more bratty version of Dilandau Albatou is kinda scary.
Then again, they both seem to share a fetish for collateral damage and destruction, so it would make sense.
