Guys, "Kintobor" = "Robotnik" spelled backwards. The sickness of 'original Sonic characters' was there before his first game even hit the shelves. It truly is a curse.
In general I really disliked the American story and designs for Sonic. The whole “planet Mobius, Conehead Robotnik, Mohawk sonic, etc” I’m really glad that Sega ditched a lot of that stuff as the series went on
Same, even worse with Mobius and the fact that it came from a mistranslation when Sonic 2 came out, it always felt so off to me and i grew with American Sonic, i just always preferred Japanese one since it wasn't so extremely tryhard or cringy, i mean "Christmas Island"? Sonic being from Nebraska? Mobius? Ivo Kintobor and so on? It felt so boring and souless to me, almost as if they thought i was so stupid i would be happy with anything regardless the quality or logic, meanwhile Japanese lore of Sonic was more consistente and interesting (too bad that's barely the case nowdays) but yeah, Japanese lore it's just infinitely better to me
Sonic Team ditched the Japanese backstory of Sonic, because none of them read the manuals. *Sonic Adventure does not even take place in the Genesis continuity, according to Iizuka.*
@@etherealhatred The Japanese lore is less consistent. Sonic Team never read the genesis manuals. They always hired writers that never played the games since the 1990s.
@@nanight2353 bad future, that means its supposed to be bad, while others songs like palmtree panic (present) is pretty good, while you can put the entire american ost on a sonic.exe fan game and you wont even notice
The one thing that Cybershell failed to point out in this video were the lore inconsistencies between the JP Sonic lore and the U.S. Sonic lore. The games followed the Japanese lore, which you can read in the manuals of the games. To make things short, the JP lore had a mythological feel to it, mentioning gods pulling the strings, ancient events causing the events of the games, a Shonen vibe to the series, and the games taking place on an alternate reality of Earth. Meanwhile, America had its own version of the lore, focusing on freeing a world from Dr. Robotnik, with it being inspired by American cartoons, and the setting was another planet called Mobius. By _Sonic Adventure,_ SEGA decided to make the Japanese lore canon, yet they didn't tell Americans what the lore was about! It felt jarring for American Sonic fans to see attributes that were only seen in the Japanese lore, such as Sonic having a more laidback personality, (and he wasn't eating chili dogs until _Sonic Advance 3,_ as stated in the manual,) Tails being the mechanic, replacing Rotor Walrus, and the fact that Sally was nowhere to be seen in the games. Honestly, I'll blame poor communication between two branches that were separated by sea. The thing I like about _Freedom Planet_ is that Galaxytrail was smart enough to keep their brains in one spot, allowing for the lore to be consistent across any region.
Poor communication WILDLY understates the situation inside Sega at the time. Part of Sega Japan had basically declared war on Sega America and was doing everything in their power to sabotage them because they were worried Sega America would become the main branch due to the wild success of the Genesis in America vs the faceplant of a release it had in Japan.
Fun fact: The in-game model for Classic Sonic in Sonic Generations and Forces is different from the one in the promotional renders, staying completely true to the Japanese design
Sega OF Japan: Sonic lives on Eart- Sega Of America: SONIC LIVES ON A PLANET CALLED MOBUIS FULL OF PEOPLE LIKE HIM. Sega Of Japan: Eggman is fat and it makes him look like an e- Sega Of America: HIS NAME WAS OVI KINTOBOR BUT EGGS AND CHAOS EMERALD ENERGY TURNED HIM INTO IVO ROBOTNIK.
Japan's rather odd with motivational methods like that, I remember the old Dragon Quest games had the goddess or God of that game talking to you the player, not the character in the game about what motivates you and how you view the world, and tells you to try to be positive and not blame others for your own insistence that everything is negative.. I mean jesus 30 something year old game.

Here’s one thing I never got, Japanese Classic Sonic’s different more turquoise shade (and is used for the Classic Sonic in generations and forces) while American Classic Sonic was the same shade of blue used for Modern Sonic today

NiGHTS is an unfolding stage, a breathtaking adventure through fantastic but dangerous places. Courage and skill determine the outcome of your incredible dream."

You know, for the longest time before I really got into Sonic, I always thought of Eggman as a joke villain and completely unintimidating. Like, at least Bowser is some giant turtle demon... thing. Then I played Sonic CD. Oh boy, the Bad Future levels really showed me how Eggman actually seems quite competent at turning the world into a hazardous polluted shithole if Sonic isn't around to stop him. EDIT: I actually appreciate this a lot. I like how Eggman outwardly gives off this goofy appearance and demeanor, but is still a genuine threat to the world.
@@LonelySpaceDetective Not to mention, the goofy look is easier to fall for than the demon look. It's easy to understand why Knuckles was tricked by Eggman, but stupid to believe King Acorn would trust Julian Kintobor due to the fact that he looks like an evil mustached version of Heavy Weapons Guy, who already looks intimidating. Also, Julian Robotnik's black & red glowing eyes and angry scowl? Not scary. Absolutely! I'm so happy people other than me still care about him dearly cause everyone around me just despises him for no reason. Love the spikey blue boy
it warms your heart that a series that practically kept sega afloat for like 30 years is still popular? thats like saying its incredible that Mario games still come out to this day.
me too, i think the american design has a lot more personality shown through it. plus it’s what i grew up with lol so nostalgia obv. always loved how much attitude was put into it
It just kept cycling between a few Sonic Riders and Shadow the Hedgehog tracks. There was also that part where Sonic himself answered questions people had been asking about him. Meanwhile, Fang the Sniper was listed as a major character and one of Sonic's arch enemies, alongside Shadow.
Just some thoughts 6:55 - It is interesting considering that it isn't the only game to do that as Super Mario Bros 2 (Doki Doki Panic) became Super Mario USA in Japan. In this situation, it might be helped that Eggman's design in the game is the American Robotnik design along with Sonic appearance being more based on the American version. It might have helped Japanese players to understand why the game's design wasn't the same as the standard Sonic Team design. 7:21 - The European art for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is very odd. For starters, the title is just "Sonic 3" with a different font for the title (Compare the O in Sonic 3 to the first O in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The O in Sonic's name should be slightly tilted and not stretched out to the degree it is in Sonic 3.) The other oddities relate to the Chrome text for the word Sonic, the distorted pose for Sonic (the legs seem to be facing the right, but Sonic's head is slightly facing the left), and the odd background choice of Carnival Night Zone over Angel Island Zone.

I got a second hand MegaDrive which I think was originally from somewhere in Asia - it still worked with my UK PAL games but I had the Japanese version of Sonic 1. I so preferred the original Japanese Sonic to the strange shiny one present on my friends' games. Also, my year 9 geography teacher was a rotund bald man with glasses and a ginger moustache...
I've never understood why they changed Sonic's design on the box art in America. His original design already looks American as hell, with how it reminds of old American cartoons like Felix the Cat, yet they felt the need to change it????? Plus I think his American design looks worse. Also, I did notice the bigger eyebrows and the brow furrow of Classic Sonic in Generations! Though the brow furrow seems to only appear when he does certain expressions.
Natok the Watok I know Spyro was forced to have a redesign to be cuter for Japanese box art, because Insomniac made him too edgy looking for the target demographic/Culture. I think Japan did the same thing for America, making Sonic’s design more grittier and suitable for American culture at the time.
1:51 - *"During the '90s, no one was complaining."* Lemme just say that *as a 34 year old who was a '90s kid: I was **_definitely_** complaining.* I absolutely loved Sonic growing up, but I always abhorred the way he looked on the box art. It _always_ bothered me as to how he could look so cool in the game, but look like such a dork in related-artwork. But thanks to this video, now I know: American Sonic was a total dork that ruined the image of the character for me. 💯
I loooove the original Japanese design of Sonic. The way they brought it back with a couple minor tweaks for Generations was great though. I hope they make future games with that design.
@@juniorlewis3841 Yeah I agree. I like Dr. Robotnik with the round head and dark eyes. It really fits with his menacing contraptions that you have to fight.
I think the original Japanese design captures his overall character better. Eggman's supposed to be a bit comedic/playful while also being menacing/mysterious. Eggman's glasses achieve that soulless/creepy look while simultaneously somehow working for Eggman's "branding" of either making his inventions look like himself or slapping his logo on things. The US design only works as an evil Robotnik who's hellbent on skinning Sonic alive or something.

In general I really disliked the American story and designs for Sonic. The whole “planet Mobius, Conehead Robotnik, Mohawk sonic, etc”
I’m really glad that Sega ditched a lot of that stuff as the series went on
Was there any of it you liked?
I liked the name Mobius. I liked Robotnik being intimidating. Beyond that I agree.

The idea of a “Sonic Bible” is just insanely hilarious to me
Any intellectual property calls a a booklet of rules to follow a “design bible”. Lurk more fgt

Just some thoughts
6:55 - It is interesting considering that it isn't the only game to do that as Super Mario Bros 2 (Doki Doki Panic) became Super Mario USA in Japan.
I too was horrified by Robotnik's empty eyes as a small lad.
