I'd say the dark eco crate glitch is still in the spirit of the run, regardless of technicalities. Plus, it's just more interesting to include it than declare failure.
It definitely counts and its interesting. You could always just split runs in two categories then, for example no eco and true no eco or whatever better name people come up with.
Doesn't work with roleplay. Jak is scared eco will turn him orange. Daxter specifically fell into dark eco before turning orange. Jak being willing to touch the very eco he's afraid of doesn't click.
At 35:08 you picked up two green eco blobs on the slide. This is because you always get eco attracted to you from broken boxes when you are in a sliding state, and when you load the bottom of the level an enemy spawns on top of a crate and instantly breaks it. Fortunately this is avoidable by using a precise roll jump at the top to jump over the trigger for sliding state. Not sure how that affects your orb counts though... Amazing video as always, and it was fun watching your progress!
In the first minute of watching this, I was utterly convinced this was possible. Then I remembered the last thing you need to collect to complete the game is a blob of white eco. I wanted to cry.
@@AlexeyDatEdgyhog Yes, I kind of wish there was a way around that, just for the sake of this challenge. Going this far just to hit such a brick wall...

Out of all the power cells that I was sure you weren't going to get, I would have never thought in a million years someone could have gotten the one in the crate in volcanic crater, so that was cool
Do you ever find yourself coming back to these games and find yourself having to “retrain” to the rules of a casual play through after challenges like this? Great video man!
I always assumed that the answer would be no due to the final boss. Even if you could damage it without yellow eco, you still need to pick up the light eco to finish it. But man, I wasn't expecting so much of the game to be possible without eco. I think more collectibles were acquired in this no eco run than my own playthrough where I was under no such restriction.
It's actually white eco. I don't know why, or if it is even supposed to be a different type (although it does seem to have vastly different powers and light eco literally isn't white).
@slycooperrocks5826mostly because they dont actually know how to make eco do what they want specifically outside of their own eco. There is no white eco sage. And dark eco shows that it can just kill you, it can transform you, and its also hard to control by nature. So even if they did use light eco again, theres no particular guarantee that the desired affect of back to human was gonna come from that. Two things aside: Jacks usage of light eco in tpl vs 3 is very different, but thats for narrative and character reasons not the eco itself. In tpl jak is on an adventure and as far as he is aware almost every version of channeling eco can b offensive. Blue and green eco make that harder to really contxtualize esp green, but when first presented with light eco consider its component parts are easy to use offensively its likely just his natural move. And the more calm and healing aspects of light eco are very specifically taught/given to him from the precursors. And this is probably specifically cause they had been watching him and new of the dark eco warrior inside him. The other thing thats an aside is depending how you interact with the story, you can come to identify that the precursors mightve remembered what happened with the light eco in tpl. How it was used offensively and the gang had no idea to turn dax back. So when Jak comes across the chance to use light eco again … what do they do? They teach him it has more properties than just offensive capabilities. Light Jak exists both as an answer to Dark Jak AND as a response to “could light evo change dax back?”, yes if used properly it could be used to change dax back. And we know the little furry rata could still do this but dax declined and veger got the opposite version 😂
@slycooperrocks5826 maybe the cost of the four sages creating light eco was so great that it caused an eco shortage since eco really isnt shown in future games. who am i kidding, it's for plot and tension.
@slycooperrocks5826 not long after the defeat of Gol and Maia, Jak and the gang would have come right back, if not immediately had the 100 power cells to open the rift, which let's tons of Metal Heads into TPL world while the gang gets teleported to the future. The villagers probably all got murked instantly, the three sages didn't hold out for long I imagine, and Daxter was long gone with Samos too.
I already knew the run dies at the final boss. Still, great video. Love it. And for the dark eco, I would allow it. You don't collect it. It doesn't benefit you in terms of game mechanics. And a glitch isn't intended by the devs. If that is considered a grey area, then the machine Kiera uses to free the way to Klaw, should also be considered. It uses blue eco to lift the rock. But that's my opinion.
I wouldn't count the dark eco crate but I do find it funny that the first instance of something funny you can do with the game involves the eco that caused Jak's phobia of all eco for this challenge in the first place
Personally I wouldn’t count the dark eco crates as collecting eco because the spirit of the challenge is to avoid helpful collectibles and power ups, not necessarily any semantic instance of eco. Dark eco crates are an obstacle, in a normal run you’d want to avoid them anyway.
I disagree but mostly because of the humorous intro. "Eco is icky, look what it did to Daxter, so we aren't touching any of it" is the setup, so that would very clearly make Dark Eco Crates a no-go. Still fun to see in the video, so I'm glad he included it anyway.
@@TARINunit9Actually I'd say he didn't touch the eco. Whenever Jak takes damage, he blinks on and off, and the same goes when he takes damage from dark eco crates. You are one of the few people who doesn't have a problem with loosing your keys. If this happens you can just double jump from the wall, perform spin kick, ground pound and glitch through the invisible wall. It's that easy!
Nice to see Jak covered! I actually considered suggesting a "no melee" run for TPL, but when I saw you were already doing a run on the game I ditched the idea. I must wonder, what could one remove from Jak II and Jak 3😂 Also, a completely random fact; For some reason we Finns love Sly Cooper, probably because 2 and 3 were dubbed unlike a lot of other PS2 platformers!
Jak and Daxter will forever be my top favorite game of my childhood. Then it's Super Mario world 2 Yoshi's Island. I watch the entire cutscene collection of the Jak and Daxter trilogy like it's a 3 hour movie. Brings me the childhood happiness that was quickly robbed from me..
Since the point of the challenge is to not use Eco on Jak, using Eco to die and become a zombie would be invalidating the rules. That being said everything non-Eco related was still interesting to see. Even if not doing it would end the run it is always more interesting to see the minimal amount. The challenges are suppose to be fun and as long as you're not going "I made the rules so I say screw the rules" it ultimately works out best to use it only when needed as everyone wins. Much better then videos which do a challenge, hit a road block, and stop ignoring the rest of the game.
But the dark eco just kills you so you aren't using it at all. The way i see it, dark eco is exempt from the rule since you aren't collecting it and it doesn't aid you in any way, it just kills you. That's just my opinion at least
I speedran this game about 2 years ago. Seeing you go through the glitches I can see there's a lot of better / easier strats that have been found since then! Pretty cool.
Yknow, I just came up with an interesting idea. What if, you played through Jak 2, but you can't collect metal head crystals? Certain parts might be exceptionally difficult, but plenty of levels, you could potentially just run past them all.
Would love to see a challenge on ty the tasmanian tiger (or ty 2) Lesser known platformer that's great fun No idea what you'd do though, no collectibles, no boomerangs, no jump, bite only, etc
I'd be interested in trying that series out one day. Only played the original and didn't get too far. I believe "Obscure Video Game Runs" did something similar to "No Collectables though. I'll look at the series again at some point 👍
I have to say, the thought of the run being exactly like this in one specific way, somehow allowing no rangs but promptly crashing and burning at the final boss where you need the Doomerang, is hilarious.
Called it! ^^ Also, while you can't beat the game without Eco, which seems to be mandatory to beating Gol and Maia, the fact that you've shown that you CAN get to the final battle against Gol and Maia without Eco is still pretty impressive.
Even if you did somehow manage to damage the final boss without eco, you would still have to grab the light eco afterwards to actually finish the game.
I appreciate how you explain why certain things should and shouldn’t be done, because I haven’t played this personally but want to know the smaller details. Stellar video btw ❤
Nice, absolutely love challenge videos like these. Btw, did you know you don't actually need to idle deload when respawning at the finial boss, if you fall down towards the entrance of the path leading to the Blue Sage and jump into the void you'll be far enough to respawn at the boss.
I was watching your FF9 challenge video and really enjoyed it, then the others, and I thought I wonder what he'd do for Jak and Daxter and here we are 😂 It's one of my fave games, and the first I've ever 100% completed too. (I know it's rather easy to do so, but I was very proud of myself then.)
What an amazing video. I knew about quite a few glitches from watching speedruns, but there was so much more sequence breaking possible than I thought!
All the tricks and techniques are incredible. Would love to see a 'no steps' video for MGS3. Solid Snake had to learn how to do it from somewhere right XD
To quote the rules at the very beginning, "We cannot collect or touch any eco of any Colour, at all." According to physics, colour is determined by its place on the visible spectrum, which notably excludes both black and white. Therefore, using this as an EXTREMELY semantic approach, which in no way shape or form adheres to the spirit of the challenge... I, as a hapless bystander, decalre light eco to be fine. Jk, great video, loved the nostalgia trip, keep up the awesome job!
I would LOVE for someone to somehow figure out how to beat the final boss without Eco. Idk how it could possibly be done but I never doubt the speed runner community or similar communities who break games. This video was a master class on game knowledge from the backend in and I loved it 🎉
Pre-watch comment: SO excited to watch this, playing this game with my friend was one of the *highlights* of my childhood, we spent so much time goofing around, making up dumb stories about the characters while my friend ran around. Didnt even care that we usually died about a dozen times before accomplishing something, we were having so much fun This brought back so many good memories, thank you❤ Now that I think of it, i don't think I even know what happens after the jungle area! 😅
The Lurker Shark (giant orange fish) is what gave me straight fear of deep water, not just in games but real life. You'll never catch me swimming in deep video game waters. The growl with the heart beat picking up aggressively before swallowing you in a blink of an eye. Traumatizes a 25 year old to this day.
Okay, haven't started yet. I'm gonna guess there is 1 or 2 moments aside from the final fight that requires eco. Maybe, I know from speedrunning documentaries there are some WILD sequence breaks. Guess I'll find out in an hour.
Yooo the fall damage breaking metal crates trick was news to me, as was storage of fall damage when you grab a ledge. I love learning new things about something I thought I knew inside and out. Thank you for this!
I've never been so disappointed, accepting dark eco zombie glitch as legit, enjoying every tricks to bypass levels, all this to finally be stopped on the finnish line at the boss to not being able to deal damage... he didn't even try the surprise attack by not looking at the boss 😂 what a shame
Important note: Citadel Skip isn't possible on any of the following versions: PS2 NTSC-U Red Label PS2 NTSC-J PS3 PS Vita PS4/5 if purchased with a US or JP account
I feel astonished how the sages were freed without eco, my inner child rages not knowing that little cutscene checkpoint skip trick. It was the longest I took in the game, longer than defeating the Big Boss like what💀
Glad to know about the better long jump option since I was royally annoyed by the final cell in the mountain pass. I didn't want to backtrack after finding the yellow eco switch, so I warped back and the walked all the way through the mountain pass just to jump over the rock because I couldn't make it backwards.
When doing the boost jump at 10:30 if you immediately spin kick after the uppercut instead of waiting until the end you get massive height and a little distance which should make that gap trivial. You do this at 14:10 to get into the sealed room Edit: doing the spin kick immediately isn’t necessary, as you just need to do it while you’re gaining height. If done at the apex of the jump or after, you won’t get much extra height at all.
This run was literally impossible from the get-go, considering the fact that finishing off the final boss requires you to pick up Light Eco, anyway, so insofar as the literally-worded challenge, there was no way it was going to work. That said, you got pretty close to making that the *only* eco you'd have had to pick up.
The fact you DON'T die by dark eco is because power cells energise Jak to reject all eco 😉. Precusor tech was shown to kick dark eco butt in the intro sequence.
I’m 40 minutes in and I keep getting more and more impressed at the insane levels of thought and ingenuity that went into this. EDIT: Also, for my money, I don’t think the zombie glitch invalidates the run. The point is beating the game without the powers and benefits Eco affords you. Dark Eco offers no advantages towards beating the game, it only exists to kill you, so using it is ok. Just my two cents!
SPOILERS for the video: To be fair, I knew going into this video that this challenge may have been impossible, mainly due to needing Light Eco to defeat the final boss, but I didn’t realise just how much of this game could be completed without Eco (as well as how broken this game can be when you try to break it). This was well presented and fun to watch as always.

Thank you, it makes the successful runs all the more satisfying
@NGPlusVideos I just found your channel I like your content can you drop more videos inalready watched your other ones
These games were my childhood, I love seeing them taken apart. Jak 2 without guns, Jak 3 without cars, Jak X without hating life?
Man this game was my childhood, the nostalgia I'm feeling right now makes my shoulders tingle
Wow, a blast from the past.
Still got my old PS2 copy, thinking I should try this challenge someday.
Plus I'm pretty sure you can get zombie state elsewhere in this area, that's just the easiest place to demonstrate
But the dark eco just kills you so you aren't using it at all. The way i see it, dark eco is exempt from the rule since you aren't collecting it and it doesn't aid you in any way, it just kills you. That's just my opinion at least
Great video, happy to see how well you were able to showcase all of the cool stuff that goes into this
Thank you, couldn't have done it without you 🙌
Before starting this video I clicked to 3 random spots. Each had something super cool and technical. This is such a cool run
I was wondering where you've been, and it seems you were delving into the childhood of us ALL!
Yup, I'm always streaming these challenges on Twitch, it's just some take a bit longer than others 😅
Oh it seemed so...well, easy is certainly not the right term, but plausible, right up until the end! A shame, but regardless, another fantastic video
I got so excited when I saw this vid in my feed. My favourite challenge youtuber playing my favourite childhood game? Hell yes!!
Would love to see a challenge on ty the tasmanian tiger (or ty 2)
Lesser known platformer that's great fun
No idea what you'd do though, no collectibles, no boomerangs, no jump, bite only, etc
I'd be interested in trying that series out one day. Only played the original and didn't get too far. I believe "Obscure Video Game Runs" did something similar to "No Collectables though. I'll look at the series again at some point 👍
I have to say, the thought of the run being exactly like this in one specific way, somehow allowing no rangs but promptly crashing and burning at the final boss where you need the Doomerang, is hilarious.
best video i’ve ever seen. mountain pass skip is breathtaking, mind blowing stuff
Called it! ^^
Also, while you can't beat the game without Eco, which seems to be mandatory to beating Gol and Maia, the fact that you've shown that you CAN get to the final battle against Gol and Maia without Eco is still pretty impressive.
Even if you did somehow manage to damage the final boss without eco, you would still have to grab the light eco afterwards to actually finish the game.
I appreciate how you explain why certain things should and shouldn’t be done, because I haven’t played this personally but want to know the smaller details. Stellar video btw ❤
As regards the dark eco it all comes down to the question in the end: Without eco? Nope. Without collecting eco? Yup ✨️
Ooooh. This is the very first challenge I ever attempted in a video game. Ecoless Run J&D is actually very difficult but interesting.
Nice, absolutely love challenge videos like these.
Btw, did you know you don't actually need to idle deload when respawning at the finial boss, if you fall down towards the entrance of the path leading to the Blue Sage and jump into the void you'll be far enough to respawn at the boss.
jak & daxter was my favourite game series as a kid
I wish they did a remaster
I was watching your FF9 challenge video and really enjoyed it, then the others, and I thought I wonder what he'd do for Jak and Daxter and here we are 😂
It's one of my fave games, and the first I've ever 100% completed too. (I know it's rather easy to do so, but I was very proud of myself then.)
This is so cursed, I loved every second
What an amazing video. I knew about quite a few glitches from watching speedruns, but there was so much more sequence breaking possible than I thought!
All the tricks and techniques are incredible. Would love to see a 'no steps' video for MGS3. Solid Snake had to learn how to do it from somewhere right XD
Thank you. You guessed my intro! Yeah, I have to wait til Autumn for the game to be available again 😅
@@NGPlusVideos Can't wait! Should be a great one!
I like how you climb the outside of the wall to get into the arena on Misty Island instead of just going down from the cannon :D
To quote the rules at the very beginning, "We cannot collect or touch any eco of any Colour, at all."
According to physics, colour is determined by its place on the visible spectrum, which notably excludes both black and white. Therefore, using this as an EXTREMELY semantic approach, which in no way shape or form adheres to the spirit of the challenge... I, as a hapless bystander, decalre light eco to be fine.
Jk, great video, loved the nostalgia trip, keep up the awesome job!
Exactly. White and black are shades, not a colour.
I would LOVE for someone to somehow figure out how to beat the final boss without Eco. Idk how it could possibly be done but I never doubt the speed runner community or similar communities who break games. This video was a master class on game knowledge from the backend in and I loved it 🎉
I thought the title first said "without ego". and i was like no? im the best?
30:50 i could just hear 12 year old me yelling "its tough already!" 😂
great run, love seeing this game continue to get the love it deserves!
Pre-watch comment: SO excited to watch this, playing this game with my friend was one of the *highlights* of my childhood, we spent so much time goofing around, making up dumb stories about the characters while my friend ran around. Didnt even care that we usually died about a dozen times before accomplishing something, we were having so much fun
This brought back so many good memories, thank you❤
Now that I think of it, i don't think I even know what happens after the jungle area! 😅
Your channel is so underrated I love these challenges so much! I hope you do a challenge run on the game Toy Story 2 someday!
Thank you, I was looking at Toy Story 2, but I have never played it before. I will need to research it :)
Wasteland Kraken says hi.
After 27 years, I finally learnt that HUD stands for heads up display...
Clicking the links at the end was how I got to the Rayman challenges from the Spyro challenges.
I've never been so disappointed, accepting dark eco zombie glitch as legit, enjoying every tricks to bypass levels, all this to finally be stopped on the finnish line at the boss to not being able to deal damage... he didn't even try the surprise attack by not looking at the boss 😂 what a shame
I was literally playing this a couple of days ago. So glad to see a new video on such a classic
Important note: Citadel Skip isn't possible on any of the following versions:
PS2 NTSC-U Red Label
PS2 NTSC-J
PS3
PS Vita
PS4/5 if purchased with a US or JP account
Isn't that basically every version?
@@Dr.Indalecio No, because the glitch still works on PS2 NTSC-U Black Label, PS2 PAL and PS4/5 PAL.
I guess that would explain why I could never get it to work I guess
I feel astonished how the sages were freed without eco, my inner child rages not knowing that little cutscene checkpoint skip trick. It was the longest I took in the game, longer than defeating the Big Boss like what💀
hey there, loving the video so far, sorry about not catching the streams just been caught up with revision for gcse mocks
No problem, thank you for being there when you can, appreciate it 🙌
Yes! My dream comes true today! J&D is so high on my list of favorite games, I'm stoked you're covering it!
Now i want to see outrageous Josh getting a wr even in this new category
Considering getting Light Eco is the ending trigger... I'm gonna guess no.
Glad to know about the better long jump option since I was royally annoyed by the final cell in the mountain pass. I didn't want to backtrack after finding the yellow eco switch, so I warped back and the walked all the way through the mountain pass just to jump over the rock because I couldn't make it backwards.
The fall damage glitch reminded me of how Crash breaks boxes.
What a funny coincidence.
I watche this video to see how he would get passed the final boss without eco and it was just as I expected. This was a cool run
When doing the boost jump at 10:30 if you immediately spin kick after the uppercut instead of waiting until the end you get massive height and a little distance which should make that gap trivial. You do this at 14:10 to get into the sealed room
Edit: doing the spin kick immediately isn’t necessary, as you just need to do it while you’re gaining height.
This would be an awesome speedrun category tbh.
Would love more Jak and Daxter or legacy of kain games. Killing it with the uploads man hope you have as much fun making it as I do watching it.
That lurker shark scared me as a kid. My heart would race and I'd panic every time I heard it.
I still hate the sharks in old Tomb Raider games!
Admire how much time, work and dedication this entire video must have took.
They need to make a JAK 4 for ps5 then a DAXTER 2 for ps5 then a JAK AND DAXTER RIP THROUGH TIME GAME LOL
I adore this game so much and it was a pleasure to see you explore its limits. Hope to see the other games in the future!
I had a feeling the Final Boss was going to be the run-ending gate. Still, nice hustle on all the rest of those collectibles though!
I used to love watching jak 1 low-eco % speedruns
I’m 40 minutes in and I keep getting more and more impressed at the insane levels of thought and ingenuity that went into this.
EDIT: Also, for my money, I don’t think the zombie glitch invalidates the run. The point is beating the game without the powers and benefits Eco affords you. Dark Eco offers no advantages towards beating the game, it only exists to kill you, so using it is ok. Just my two cents!
Soo glad to see this come together. Y'all did an amazing job 🤩!
45:11 I knew you could skip claw by clipping in and walking through the lava but didn't know there was a way to idle deload into Mountain pass.
I found your account very recently and i absolutely love your content!! Binged it all and replayed the spyro ones 3 times already. Keep it up ❤
SPOILERS for the video:
To be fair, I knew going into this video that this challenge may have been impossible, mainly due to needing Light Eco to defeat the final boss, but I didn’t realise just how much of this game could be completed without Eco (as well as how broken this game can be when you try to break it). This was well presented and fun to watch as always.
Jak and Daxter has such a cool universe I wish Naughty Dog would come back to it
Ah yes my favourite challenge channel and my favourite childhood game, for an hour long no less, delightful!
This run "Ah yes, the Everything is made of floor."
Great video! I think the dark eco thing is ok to progress the run, maybe one day a new way to do the boss with will be found as well
