    There are some very delicate exposed traces on the Nano between the GPU and HMB. It's easily damaged if you are changing the paste or putting a waterblock on. It's worth watercooling though if you can get a block cheap/included.

    If AMD setup the HBCC feature for these Fury chips like it did for the Vega cards, the Fury cards would be great!
    HBCC makes Vega timeless on the VRAM side just because you can just install system memory and assign some to the GPU, would of been perfect for Fury if they had it ready at that time.

    Given the 4gb vram, I wonder if hbcc segment being turned on might offer significantly more performance? I generally don't see a difference with Vega but Vega has 8gb vram which most titles don't use or need even with maxed settings. Unsure if hbcc is an option on the fury nano but if it is it might be worth another video.

    The reason why older GCN cards dont do so well in 1080p is geometry fill rate needs to be faster at really high frame rates. this could be mitigated by driver optimization and better color compression. But the most efficient way of doing that is what they have done with Navi. if you can perform more instructions per clock cycle then you can imagine that high refresh rate scaling should be better. Navi can perform 4 instructions vs 1 per cycle on GCN. though at a smaller chuck that's why its only a 1.25x IPC not 4x.

    • @KillaBitz

    August 2016 I bought my G1 Gaming GTX 980 Ti off of eBay for just $355 shipped! She still runs AMAZINGLY to this day at 1503 MHZ core and 8 GHZ effective VRAM rock solid 100% of the time I game. Barely hits even 65° C most of the time, 73° at worst when my room is hot, like 28+ C, and my CPU is pushing heat too (8700k 5 GHZ all core, 4.7 GHZ Ringbus and no AVX offset) - but that said I mine Monero with my CPU still and even when it is hitting ~55° C across all cores, my GPU still only hits about 32 C with its fans off while watching Netflix and mining on my CPU.
    My case has BEASTLY airflow, though - 8 high performance fans, 5 blowing in, 3 out!

    I geeked out over the Nano when it came out, easily one of the most powerful small cards on release. I run the Zotac GTX 1070ti mini and I love that card. I just think that at this point if the card does not have 8 gigs of Vram you are in trouble sooner than later. I have already been thankful for the extra video memory as I routinely am at over 6.5 gigs all the time on my rig....Tomb raider almost drags me to 7.45 gigs and that is crazy for a closed semi open world game. When the new consoles come out with more than 8 gigs of ram that is when we will all be in trouble guys.

    • @CourtJester888
      @CourtJester888 5 років тому +1

      Hbm gets away with dealing with high vram requirements because it can refresh the textures it's holding very quickly. Also just because a game allocates a certain amount of vram doesn't mean it needs it. Still I agree that 4gb hbm vram would probably be limiting sooner rather than later. But at that rate you could prob just drop your textures a bit. For people that already have the card, I think they're prob find for at least another year or two. But in terms of a value buy for 1440p, Vega 56 is the king with used model to be found sub $200 USD.

    this card works best at 1440p even if you have a 1080p monitor. I have the fury nitro and super sampling on a 1080p monitor cleans up the image quite a bit. I feel like people don't talk about using super sampling enough. The vram is certainly an issue on newer games, when it runs out the game is unplayable with all the stutter. If you can keep the vram within the limits these cards are still pretty beastly and only flex their true power at 1440p and up. I have a huge backlog of older games and I run all of them at 1440p or 4k with no problem at all!

    I will definitely tell my buddies to get this if they don't want to spend a lot on newer cards. Thank you my friend. I got two friends who want to build pcs and are extremely limited. This thing kills it even at 1440p!!!! Now they would be doing 1080p gaming so i'd say they can crank up the settings. Any way to do 2-way crossfire with two of those nanos? Worth it over a newer card? lets find out!

      Tell them to look for a used blower style Vega 56 and undervolt it till the blower noise isn't loud even if it means lowering the peak clock setting. Much better future proofing in terms of specs (8gb vram vs 4gb) as well as driver support into the future given Vega is newer and is Google is about to spend millions on Vega. A solid undervolted blower will land you between a 1070 and 1070ti on performance (undervolting Vega actually gets you more performance than running stock). You can slap a Morpheus cooler on it later when you have money and play with power play table mods to shoot past 1070ti performance (not to mention make the card dead silent) especially if you win the silicon lottery on your hbm2 and can overclock it well. Vega likes hbm2 overclocks a lot more than GPU overclocks.

    This card have an advantage with compact form-factor but do you really need to take second-hand Nano card when new Vega 56 is 250$ or even less? (at least in EU). 56 isn't powerhungry and can be tuned with ease to get even more performance - truly best bang for the buck. But still - Nano is cute and tiny card, i like it alot :D

There must be well over 50 Fury on eBay UK but notably fewer Nano- which would be logical as the Nano was pitched at SFF which is relatively niche in the UK (certainly compared to most other regions such as USA, Far East (excluding Japan who love cases that look like Godzilla should be eating it with 20 optical drives stuck in the front). In fact in Japan most people have bigger PCs than they have houses.

    the R9 NANO was easily AMD's best/most compelling card of the Fury line up. AMD had been getting very power hungry around that time with the 290 and stuff, the Fury and Fury X drank power like it was going out of fashion, the nano was actually quite power efficient I am pretty sure it was the only 4k cable card with less than 200w tdp at the time. A curious follow up video would be how well 2 Nano cards perform in crossfire as those cards seemed tailor made for crossfire.

    Timmy Joe PC Tech : just to educate you with my practical experience with R9 Nano....HBM1 and HBM2 has such a wide memory bandwidth that is praxis in games as far as textures goes it acts as a 6-ish GB card. The wide memory bandwidth can fill and empty the memory with textures approximately 4 x faster than with normal GDDR5 so if a game requires 6 GB of memory for textures, R9 Nano will be able to hold them and draw them properly without loosing them at all. I've tested a Sapphire R9 Nano a year ago with modern games and I found that it takes around 6,6-6,7 GB of textures before R9 Nano starts loosing textures and not loading them properly. And offcourse if the DX 12 would actually be used in modern games, this R9 Nano would be much much more utilized and faster that GTX 1660 Ti with no problem and would knock on the door of the RTX 2060 6GB.

    980ti doesn't really hold up as well. As is the case with most older nvidia cards. The fine wine stuff aside they just don't update the drivers anymore once a cards a couple generations old. Radeon seems to update every card they've ever made forever. Might be because they pretty much have all shared the same architecture so it was incidental. It'll be interesting to see what happens with older cards now that they are moving to the newer architectural standard.

      just a warning, when RDNA goes full swing, AMD will likely cut GCN driver supports within a year or two after.
      It did not seem like long after GCN was released, that AMD quit putting any effort into keeping Terascale relevant at all.
      Now with AMD finally migrating to RDNA, we could see this again.

    • @exturkconner
      @exturkconner 5 років тому

      @@pauls4522 That's still another generation maybe two away and even at that as long as some of the cards in the current release slate are being made with the older architecture they'll have to support both. Radeon VII still being the top dog in the stack currently and what not. So we'll see how it all plays out. Either way I think they'll still have longer term effective support than Nvidia does...you know. Ever.

    I paid $100 for a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 480 8GB OC. (1342Mhz) OC'ed to 1425MHz and the V-ram to 2200MHz (7.8GHz) and got a 15,600 FS score. I thought that was pretty high for a 480. It does equally well in games.
    I used that untill i got the Nitro+ VEGA 64 LE ($380) for my new LG monitor. Still stress testing but the numbers i'm getting are matching the 2070 in most games.
    Other than nVIDIA titles. But when running Vulkan and some DX12, it starts to destroy.
    I'm glad i didn't wait for NAVI. Im happy with my set up. A Nitro VEGA with a 5Ghz+ 8700K is working out great at 1440p.
    The VEGA Nitro. The LE model has a VaporX cooler and runs surprisingly quiet with the stock fan curve. If I find another deal on another high-end AMD card, i might just get it.
    I was pro nPIGIA but with these AMD GPU's I've noticed better frametimes and smoother gameplay. Smoother gameplay is the goal.

      You should under no circumstances buy an rx580 at that price point. They're going used for $100. I know because that's what I sold mine for. And since you mentioned the 1070 I have to tell you that unless you're a die-hard team green fan, you would still be better off with a used Vega 56 which is a decent chunk faster after and undervolt/overclock even on a blower and the undervolt is typically enough to let you lower your fan speed enough to get the noise to a low hum. Used Vega 56s are the best value buy out there right now. You can find great deals on Craigslist and offerup and since those are more local sales you can request to see the card working before buying it.
