    Could just be a blown cap. You should hit up buildzoid and see if he could give you some ideas or what to look for with a multimeter. Attempting a nano resurrection could be a good video in it's own right at least.

      @xyz360400 5 років тому +10

      I was thinking the same thing. Given the way it failed, it really sounds like a blown fuse or cap somewhere rather than a GPU core or VRAM failure. Those types of failures tend to leave the card in semi-working condition, just with artifacts and possibly lower clocks/higher thermal sensitivity (which actually may have been what was wrong with the card to begin with; if they were pushed too high for long periods of time for the temps and/or clocks and/or voltage, that could leave them hanging on their last legs and might explain why the guy is selling them so cheap, like maybe they were being used for mining and all OC'ed all to hell because the miner was willing to kill the cards and drop in replacements when they died). I've killed several Radeon cards with overclocking and they always powered on/worked afterwards; they just didn't run right from then on (artifacts/heat/voltage sensitivity as I mentioned) and my experiences go all the way back to the 9800 Pro in the mid 2000's and I've killed something like 4 or 5 Radeon GPUs this way from various series with the most recent being a mobile M290X/8970M (same card rebranded and same GPU core as the 7870 desktop card with different clocks). I'm not saying it's impossible to heat/voltage damage a GPU to the point where it won't power on, but I have never seen it so I suspect it's something else causing it and it can likely be repaired by someone who knows how to track down a short and solder.

      Lol, I just wrote the same thing in the comments, then saw your comment. This is more than likely a fixable problem. I seriously doubt anything is wrong with the GPU itself, and the memory is almost certainly fine, we are almost certainly looking at a blown Cap. You really don't even need Buldzoid, although I definitely would agree that he is an expert, but this is something Timmy Joe could easily do himself and make a video out of his experience. Just pop back open the card, scan it for a fat cap, desolder it, run the part number and order another online for pennies on the dollar, solder it back on, power it up. You are good. Make sure to buy some extras, and replace any cap that looks even remotely bulged. Job Complete. Would be an awesome video!

      @Scooby Dooby that's bullshit. Gaming is pretty harsh on gpus at times. Especially if using games like on and off, heating and cooling down is something which actually breaks a GPU faster. Then again the only downside about mining for a gpu is the wear and tear on its fan and that's it. Because of higher usage. But still, gaming is more abusive.

      I've bought ex mining cards ( RX 580s and GTX 1080s ) and would recommend it if they're clean and working, no more risky than any other used card.
      They're usually run cool and undervolted, so if they've been kept in a good environment the only thing that will possibly be worse for wear is the fans. Assuming there isn't some kind of defect or thermal issue, cards kept in reasonable conditions can't be 'mined to death'.
      Obviously I'm not talking about the ones run in a shed exposed to the elements that have corrosion, grime, and dead bugs on them.
      I don't like seeing 79*c on any GPU, but it does appear these cards run hot on stock settings without raising the voltage, power limit, and OC. They also have a reputation of being very sensitive and easily damaged, so perhaps replacing the thermal paste was a bit risky in the first place.

    • @CourtJester888
      @CourtJester888 5 років тому +1

      Hbcc segment increases are modest. Gamers Nexus has a whole suite of benchmarking done looking at it's effect on fps and frametimes. I've been trying to find a scenario where it's helpful but haven't found one myself. Truth is that most games do t need more than the 8gb already on Vega cards and the few that do generally already throw the extra memory requirements on to system ram without hbcc memory turned on. It did add a couple degrees to the temp of the card for some reason for me which may or may not have been a fluke as I have no reason to believe it would make the card pull more power. But yeah I see nothing from hbcc mem segment at 1440p and margin of error increases at 4k. Only memory related performance increases I get on Vega come from good old fashioned vram overclocking (which is unfortunate because my used msi air boost has hynix memory which artifacts heavily past 920 MHz even with a Morpheus cooler keeping edge temps atless than 60 degrees c and hot spot temps at 75-80 which is roughly the same as before the Morpheus despite being able to push the clock settings to 1692 at p7 and being cool even with power play table mods letting me pull +100% power and increasing current caps by 100mA while still staying at the above temps.)
      If you have seen scenarios where it's helping you out let me know so I can take a look.

    Its a common problem for the R9 (2xx, 3xx and Fury) series to stop working. The due to the card getting hot, it's most likely that the GPU dye has de-soldered itself, The method I have used to fix some R9 290x and 390x is to pull the card back apart, remove all thermal paste and thermal pads, Then get a heat gun and blow around the GPU dye for approx 30-40 seconds... Let the card cool down for a minute and then reapply thermal paste and pads... The card should start working.

      Not happening, that's already high defect rate, and he won't have an issue selling the 7 cards or whatever they have left. It would only make sense if he could then charge $200+ (which makes it a bad deal). But also sounds like Timmy might have broken his... The interposer on those Fiji cards are a total BEEEP to not break. Buildzoid (the guy that ran like 3 different GPUs soldered onto one R9 290X in the video "day of the living 290x", even HE broke a Fury card just putting the stock cooler back on (he didn't want it exposed on the liquid nitrogen cooler, so thought it safest to put the stock cooler back on... dead... Experienced pros break these things, they are extremely finicky and delicate (normal GPUs like my Titan Xp I just toss accross the room onto a bed or a couch, they just bounce a foot or two, no big deal, never broke one from that, but man was I shaky when putting blocks on my 4x Fury crossfire system!)
      video referenced, be prepared for the GPU carnage and gore...

    Sad to see it die, awesome little cards. Had one of these in my old system. Modded it to take a Rajintek Morpheus II core. But the VRM is the weak spot on these cards. High temps on the VRM makes it clock throttle like a pig. I even had that going on with the Morpheus II on it. Managed to solve it by taking the VRM cooling solution of the stock cooler, making it to fit under the Morpheus II and then it stopped dropping clocks constantly.

    So, similar situation. I bought a used RX 570 aorus off eBay. When I got it installed it, everything seems to be working fine but it was louder than I thought it should be. Then I noticed it was running a bit hotter than I thought I should be as well. So I used afterburner to edit the fan curve and it started making a lot of bad noise. So I determine that the fans were bad. I contacted the seller as well as gigabyte, the seller was more than reasonable offering a refund if I return the card. However, gigabyte told me that the card was still in warranty and issued me an RMA. So I return the car to gigabyte, informed the seller of what was going on, and here's what happened. The seller issued me a partial refund to cover my shipping costs to return the card for warranty. and gigabyte fixed the car and returned it to me. So all in I have a aorus RX 570 for about 50 USD. Sometimes getting a good deal just requires a little bit more work.

    Sorry for your loss. I also think it is a great card.
    Actually before it was "blown up" it was not only greased, but overclocked too.
    This card is designed to be really at the margin, it reducing the clock speed to keep temperature down,that's why it is hard to reach the "magic" 1000MHz clock speed.
    When the overvoltage happened, I suppose the complete cooling system became unstable and goes into an area of uncontrolled situation.
    I believe the card was deep fried during the overclocked benchmark tests shown before the defect.
    I know this card from first hand, I bough one for my son from China. I am sure it was used for mining, but very stable and very cool. A real little beast.
    But I never overclocked, just because I read beforehand, how it works. It is fast enough without overclocking too. (and I am not an FPS fanatic and try to train my boy too)

      Single connector won't matter (I've ran 2 entire Fury cards off one 8 pin and used a splitter just to test cable quality). Don't believe the super low rating on those 6/8 pins, those are a very safe factor which takes into account the worst 1/1000 connections and using cheapo aluminum cables and garbage power supplies, that's not what they actually deliver.

    I know this is late to post on this video but AMD themselves originally locked the voltage sliders for this reason. I would of personally just changed the temp and power target, keep it at its rated speed. Also the thermal pad/paste there is a small difference in the hieght of the HBM and CPU die which gamernexus mentioned when card was released. So the HBM could of overheated or the cpu clock couldnt handle the voltages.... If you still have the card you could try to check with a heat gun and pass over the board make sure a solder joint didnt overheat and reflow it..... Glad ur doing videos again though. Also I just purchased an x58 sabertooth system with a gtx 1050ti and 14gb of ram for $180 US and bought a Xeon x5675 for $25 overclocked it to 4.2ghz on a 120mm aio and I'm very impressed with the cinebench r15 score of 947, I have an i7-7700k at stock 4.2 ghz it gets a CB score of 986. Almost all 900 series cards are out of warranty, unless they were B stock or bought way later. And all 10 series cards are still covered. Also most of the time just call the company anyways, don't say you bought it used that doesn't matter people tend to not register the warranty so the company will check it in their system.

      The 1660ti is not worth it, I can buy R9 390X2 Devil editions (duel 390 8 GB cards) for $150, so a normal 2 PCIe slot board can run 4x crossfire for $300 that will overthrow 2080ti levels by significant margins.
      That's also not high clock speeds, my laptop 1070 (so actually more CUDA than the desktop version), runs just over 2 Ghz in some games (super thin MSI GP63), max temp is still pretty low, its in the 70's. I just wish I could shunt mod it... Nvidia gimping performance to dog$hit levels since Pascal! (the year they stopped allowing 4x, locked out BIOS flashing, and also imposed stupid low power levels requiring normal users to purposely short out parts of the circuit to make them run adequate, what a disgrace of a generation...)

Radeon didn't want INSTINCT sales dropping), and Vega 56/64 only supports up to 2x crossfire officially (so if you want 4x, you're best bets are duel R9 390X2 Devil cards, which is dirt cheap at $300 for 4x crossfire 390 8GB and should easily surpass Titan RTX/2080ti, duel 295x2 but probably worse since its lower Vram and not HBM like 4x Fury or duel Fiji Pro Duo since those are another good and cheap option that fits in 2 X16 slots like the rest of the solutions besides mine requiring 4x X16 slots such as X399 Threadripper platform, which I have)

      @jakegarrett8109 5 років тому

      @@ayogee323 You're not talking about the 1660ti being 4k are you? Like sure, my laptop 1070 overclocked to 2 Ghz on its 2048 CUDA and 8 GB VRAM at +600 mem can do REALLY old games at 4k, but its certainly not 4k material... Even my Titan Xp only does 67 fps in Fortnite at 4k if you run high settings... Even a Titan RTX is not very future proof for 4k (you need duel Titan RTX for 4k High settings in a lot of modern games, you can of course get away with medium, but I'd rather run 1440p if you're sacrificing visual fidelity since 1440p 165 Hz monitors are cheap and give you the option of high frame rate when the game allows).
      But if you're referring to Minecraft at 4k (without ray tracing obviously), then sure you can get away with 4k on that card.
      Nothing is future proof, its much cheaper to go the route of mid range and upgrade every year or when you need it (like a resolution jump), if you buy duel Titan RTX with the plan of running 1080p for a couple years and then doing 4k, well just get a good 1080p card and get the uber powerful XX70 monster 2 years later since its probably going to be $500 and outperform the $5000+ of today's money. I'm in the boat of there are no upgrades (if only Vega VII allowed crossfire, then I'd buy 4x in a heartbeat! Its still only the price of 1 Titan RTX for quad Vega VII, and I'd bet that would be 4k and even duel 4k ready!). However, I wouldn't be recomending any Vega for 1080p though (maybe Vega 56, those are about $300 right now, though extremely overkill...), I'd be recommending saving a ton with a $150 (or $80 used) RX 580 (8GB if its a good deal), because that will do all the 1080p you need and pair great with a 120 Hz monitor for some excellent gaming performance!
      I wouldn't spend $300 for 1080p though... Its more like $80 used or $150 new (with $120 game bundle included if you bought during anniversary sale), no need to spend $300, that's a whole nother decent card next year or the year after.

    Hey, don't worry. Tech has a lifespan. It's good you are getting your buddy a new GPU. I bought an ASUS STRIX OC GTX 1070 8gb for my brother and his editing, workplace rig for $234.99 Used at least 9 to 7 months ago. It functions extremely well including many other ITX GTX 1070. I can vouch based on friends and my brother's personally experience. The used GTX 1070 are great used finds and your buddy will really enjoy it. I mean. You're already a tech reviewer. I'm just providing that even mined GTX 1070 have more original VBIOS than the majority of other GTX cards that have been mined and are more likely to be successful in flashing than others. Similar to the AMD RX series of GPUs from all the miners who used a large amount for flashing that the original VBIOS are more easily to find for them too. However, there is one story about an RX 570 I've been recently using.
    Now, you and anybody else don't have to read this, but....
    I bought a Gigabyte RX 570 4gb a month or two ago for myself for gaming and using it for at least three years. Not that I needed it for 720p CRT gaming(which is what I do. I also own a 1080p screen. I just not a big stickler for everything with sync and stuff. CRT is fine for right now.).
    Anywho, the point was that no matter how many times I flashed it back to the original VBIOS. No matter what I did. The RX 570 would never go back to its original VBIOS even though I literally had a Disc Driver(I still used DVD writers...don't judge me for that). I also got the original VBIOS from a Gigabyte employee I connected in forums where they even helped me and still couldn't flash it back(As a side note, Gigabyte has set aside many people on forums for direct support when people buy mined AMD RX series GPUs. It's not official on there site. But, as long as you buy the original box and all packaging from any miner, the mined GPU is considered to be under tech support on forums. It's more of a short company policy for right now, but they aren't public about it cause they don't want a large influx of people who don't own 'original packaging'. I don't know about anybody else, but that's cool of them.)
    Either way, a cool dude from another town who was selling a PC with a ASUS Direct CUII R9 270x 2gb inside was kind enough to trade with me the RX 570. He somehow found out how to flash the RX 570 with a certain VBIOS and change the clocks and everything 'permanently' to make it exactly similar to the original GPU. You can even use MSI Afterburner and everything with no bad issues. He said he was good at software modification, and I definitely believe he is. He replaced the R9 270x with my RX 570, and after he fixed it. The PC sold for the same exact price cause of my card's previous issues was put in the Craigslist Ad even though he fixed it. He later on told me the guy who bought it is having no issues either.
    Okay, I know it's a long story. But, I'm just trying to show throughout this long, boring story that after experiencing my RX 570 VBIOS flashing fiasco. The buying a mining card and reflashing it to original is just way, WAY to risky for me. It was only an $80 card. But, still, too much hassle. I'm the type of guy who would buy a GTX 1660ti(On sale also! Price is still to high as Timmy Joe said in his last video. I'd pay at least $230 to $240 for one.). I would like to buy a regular GTX 1070. But, my eBay experience with GPUs and motherboards(another story even longer than this) are just plain 'bad'. Which is weird. Cause I do buy almost everything tech off EBay except for cases. I have two entire builds with a Ryzen 5 1400 and i5-8400 and 16gb ram for both from EBay sales.
    I don't know. I talk to long in comments. If anybody read all of this, then I want to apologize for making you read for so long. I hope you have a good day.

    Timmy a word of advice! The fury series was know to downclocking horribly in games as AMD's "power save feature" there was no way to disable it. I still have a Air Cooled R9 Fury Tri x OC from sapphire and that thing would go from 1040mhz down to the 800s and keep spiking up and down to "save energy" so guru3d made a program called "clockblocker" to stop it and my card now says at 1040 mhz all the time now. Next time use clockblocker and i wouldnt recommend trying to keep the clock too high on the furys (were known to die bc vrm would get so hot) so just use clockblocker and you'll be good 👍

      Dang, I paid way less for Fury on Ebay (shipping included). Though your local price obviously sucks since you could get a new RX 580 for $150 with $120 in games included from online sellers (used market in the US in general sucks, I see people trying to sell used Ryzen 1600 for $140, yet that's $60 more than what Microcenter is selling them new, like 20 miles away from that person trying to sell, and that's even more than Microcenter was charging for the 1700x! People think their crap is worth more than new...)

    i completely forgot that the nano and fury cards existed, and hot damn, they're about half the price of a 1660ti and $100-ish less than a second hand 980ti. at least here in australia. I might pick a fury x up to add to my collection.
