Just a thought. The max ranging distance will likely be affected by the stability of the platform from which you are ranging. When you consider that a beam has to travel to the target and reflect back, you aren't going to get a good reading over long distance if by the time the signal returns the receiver has moved. Perhaps you could mount it to a tripod or fixed position to try for max distance?
I have this same range finder and although the number display is black they are easy to see. Just have to be careful not to range a stick haha this finder is very precise and will measure a stick if its in between you and your target
