With the sign language story - it is a lot easier for able bodied hearing people to learn sign language than it is for a deaf person to learn a speaking language when they already can’t hear. I think the family is being super selfish by not learning to sign. It’s easier for them than it is for that little girl.
Something that really bothered me about that story is that the sister said a cochlear implant would be “better than having to learn two languages” but she already knows one language - sign. The sister is literally contradicting herself by saying she should still get an implant so she could learn English. This contradiction makes me believe that the sister doesn’t even acknowledge sign as a language in the first place, which is so ignorant and I can’t even imagine how hurtful it must be to those who use sign language to communicate. Shame on her.
Plus it'd be better for the kid overall to know sign. So the sister kinda just wants to raise her kid dumb and bigoted.
@@Kmeou yep! That was my thought exactly! Why would you want your kids to be ignorant when they have easy and even free access to learn a second language? It would be so beneficial to them later on in life to know sign language. She’s really only cheating herself and her children.
My frustration is the fact that most immigrant children have to learn two languages one to communicate with family and one to communicate with the rest of the world. It’s not a new concept it’s not something that hurts anybody as a matter fact it’s very beneficial in the real world it makes you competitive I don’t understand how that’s any different from learning sign language. Getting a cochlear implant is extremely invasive and can affect the life of your child if something goes wrong I would not do that to my child.They need to stop looking at it like they are adapting to someone else and start looking at it like every other immigrant household does.

But i cant help but think the mother is contradicting herself as well- if learning languages is generally good, wouldn't it be beneficial for the child to learn to speak (with a cochlear implants help, if that's the right choice for them) but regardless, learning to speak will get more and more difficult with age and not developing those parts of the brain early on also inhibits a child's ability to learn other spoken languages just as it would inhibit the sisters and her children learning any of the sign languages if they continue to alienate the daughter. Im trying to say I think both parties could easily be criticized and for clarity im not placing more or less value on being hearing or being Deaf... playing devil's advocate this is a complicated topic
For the girl with the facial scar story, I want her to go to R/roast me, post pictures of the entire family with a description of her situation, encourage them to be as savage as possible, then make photocopies of the posts and throw them around the house Mean Girls style. If that whole family is fine with bullying then let's see them take a hit of their own medicine. I would have gone full Regina George on them.

As someone with facial scarring & a broken nose (I was attacked by a dog as a child) I would be absolutely horrified, and heartbroken if my SO family made fun of me/made jokes surrounding my disfigurement. Typically whatever happened to recieve that facial scarring is also traumatic, and to have someone use your pain as a punchline is truly disturbing. I don't see their relationship lasting, since her boyfriend & his family cannot give her one simple thing - respect.
I myself have a dark sense of humor, but it is NEVER at the expense of another human being. This hit way too close to home.
This. In my opinion, jokes about things people can't help like physical looks are just rude and uncalled for, because you never know what insecurities people struggle with and it's just middle school shit, BUT if she didn't have a facial scar and was just this drop dead gorgeous girl and they did that I'd be like okay, not my taste in joke, but a joke whatever. But they are clearly doing that BECAUSE she has a facial scar! That is just horrible. And if they can't understand why she'd be upset, this definitely won't last. ETA: I am definitely in no way saying someone with a facial scar can't be drop dead gorgeous! I just mean if it was truly a random ironic joke and she was a RANDOM target, not my taste but slightly less disgusting... but like I said, they are clearly doing this because she has this facial scar. Which is so gross.

By all means be funny, but don't be funny at someone elses expense. That's just being shitty.
Same, even though my scars are in my feet, I suffered a lot because of them. Mostly because of people making "jokes" about them, about how I couldn't run or walk properly. At some point it stops being funny and becomes straight up bullying.
In the initial reddit post there is someone with significant facial scarring who essentially says 'scarring doesn't happen in a vacuum - usually what caused the scar was much much more unpleasant than the scar itself and you're making them relive it every time you mention it' - which is exactly true.
I'm with you - I have a 3-inch long scar on my neck from when I was a child. I got very sick (tuberculosis) and my lymph node burst through my skin in the middle of the night. So the kids in school who made fun of me for having a 'hickey' or the nosy ladies in the grocery store line up never thought it was a big deal - but little do they know every time I look at it I'm back to being that 5 year old kid, sitting in bed in the middle of the night covered in blood, thinking I'm dying. It's a very traumatic memory (so was the years of medication and reconstructive surgery that followed), and to them - it's just a scar.
That story was definitely nightmare fuel for me.

For that beee knowing he’s a married man and still open up, I wish her nothing but trash men, for the 20 years. As for the husband! I wish him to lose his little man down there.
Haven't heard that story yet, but girl yessssss that Def sounds like he wants to cheat, or already was and was afraid of getting caught so asked for a "free weekend " so he could say it happened then
If my partners family made fun of me being chunky and my bf told me it's just dark humor its over. That girl could've been bullied her whole life for that scar and that brings back the pain other people have inflected on her.
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING. She could've received that scar when she was 7 for all we know and you KNOW how absolutely brutal kids/teenagers can be, not even mentioning comments or looks she receives probably daily from strangers - just trying to go to the bank or grocery store.
His family and himself were completely outta pocket and she deserves better. Wish there was more updates on how she's doing and if she left him.
Last story's husband sounds like the type of dude that would call parenting his child as babysitting
Also cochlear implants are SUPER controversial in the deaf community. As someone from it I’ve known so many people that have gotten it where they feel they’ve lost their ability to hear normally. It’s very robotic and changes the way you hear. It doesn’t just make you hear. You have to relearn language. Overall it’s completely personal whether or not someone wants to get a cochlear.
I always wondered about the controversy. But isnt it unfair not to let your child hear? It seems like not giving a child with - 5 sight glasses and letting it learn to use a cane instead. Or whats your opinion on this?
@@oliveoconnor5589 Giving your child eyeglasses isn't an incredibly invasive surgical procedure the way that getting the implant is. And as the other commented said, there are so many things that can go wrong. Additionally, when parents make their children get one it's often a means of separating their child from he larger deaf community, which is very isolating.
@@oliveoconnor5589 it’s not the hearing you hear. Like the person said it’s like robotic so they would still be missing the hearing part that I think you’re talking about. Most adult deaf people will refuse to get an implant because they just don’t see it as a necessary thing to enjoy life.
Especially if they have even the slightest bit of hearing with super strong hearing aids. Because the implant will destroy it.
My sister has one and never uses it. She hates the weird mechanical sound.

Ok I’m straight up in tears after the first story.
First of all, that poor, poor boy having to deal with his mom being terminal - and after already losing his dad. That is traumatic and tragic. There is nothing worse than a child losing their mother young.
The aunt is being a weird opportunist, whatever her intentions are. I’m sure she has her nephew’s best interests at heart, but there’s a strange malicious undertone to what she told him, esp since mom said he was in tears during their conversation.
I would ensure the time she has left is spent reassuring her son that no one will take her place and she’ll be with him in spirit. Have a discussion with him. Will he feel comfortable suddenly calling his aunt “mom” as a teenager? Probably not. Make sure sister knows that. What a horrible situation.
If that was said to me about my mother, I would hear it as She doesn't matter anymore. She doesn't deserve to be called a mom bc she got sick'
Like yeah, the aunt most likely will/would have been his closest motherly figure in life, but saying that leaves a nasty 'under taste' that is always there. Everytime she mentions his mom, he is gonna flashback to those words and how she didn't see his mom worthy

Morgan, you’re right on the money when it comes to babies and ASL. Babies can use gestures faster then being able to communicate with the spoken word. Makes for less frustration because you know their wants and needs.
They generally start mimicking simple signs like “milk” around 6 months old! And babies taught sign generally have a larger vocabulary when they do start talking verbally.
I taught my kids and the little boy I watch uses it too. So much easier to know what he wants when they sign since he can't talk yet
Exactly!! My girls were speaking to us in sign at 5mos old. AND when they went into school they’re were far advanced in language development. I wish I knew more languages to have taught them as babies!
Yep, taught my kids and my grandson baby sign. It’s beneficial to caregivers because you know what the child wants/needs before they are able to use spoken language. It’s also beneficial to children because they can get their wants/needs met fast and more efficiently and it gives them a head start on language when they do start speaking. It’s a win/win.
Yes! At 6 months my son could sign milk and then shortly after more. He quickly caught on to a lot once he got those down. Makes parenting so much easier when you can communicate with your child!
As someone who has suffered from facial paralysis that never completely healed, I would die on the inside if my in-laws made fun of me like that. I don’t mind when people ask what my story is, but to be mocked and made fun of over something that was completely out of my control and life changing for me, I would ditch him and the family altogether. Emotional scarring is real, and can be triggered even if someone has worked hard to get past it.
Re: The Open Relationship.
Be in an open relationship, sure, cool, but you gotta both be in agreement about it. Not one person dictating what’s ok and what’s not. Furthermore, at the point where you start putting your flings before your partner, you’re no longer in a good relationship. Just because you’re “open” doesn’t mean that you don’t still have a partner who you’re supposed to be sharing your life with. This woman is for sure not the asshole.
Honestly people can do what they want but even under decent conditions I’ve never heard of an open relationship going well

For the open marriage story, the husband's post was featured on percolately. He definitely left stuff out but he was basically upset that his wife found a connection during their open relationship and then had a fight so he went to reddit. He was ruled TA for all the same reasons you guys listed minus what he left out of the story.

Kids learn sign language faster than they do verbal languages.... my entire family teaches some to our babies because they literally have better hand-eye coordination before they have oral coordination.

When my niece died at six weeks old me, my mom, and dad left our house at 5am and drove straight there. Five hours. Didn’t care about my school or their jobs. My sister, my parents daughter, had just lost her daughter at 6 weeks old. My niece died.
YOU DROP EVERYTHING FOR FAMILY.
yes there wasn’t anything we could do to bring her daughter back. But we could cook food. We could clean the apartment. We could grocery shop. Make sure my sister and brother-in-law don’t go to too dark of a place mentally.
If your family is important to you, you drop everything.
I know he had an affair, but why the fuck would you not leave??? He’s a terrible fucking person. (Even before it was revealed he cheated.)
Best decision I made as a mother was teaching my hearing children sign language as babies. They learned how to talk sooner and could communicate easily before 1. It helped when they were being watched by people that couldn’t understand them and with keeping tantrums down because they could communicate their needs easily.
Sign language is so helpful, especially for kids. For the first 4 years of my nephews life, he was nearly completely nonverbal. He was taught sign language to help talk to people and let us know what he's thinking. He is now talking however he still signs when he talks and I just know how helpful that skill is and will be for him.
The sister with the deaf child should start sending cochlear implant horror stories bc that is a major surgery that could go extremely wrong.

I'd just like to say about the woman who lost her child and then had to deal with her selfish husband. The only reason he is wanting to try again is too have control over her again, he's simply jealous and wants her to be "his" again. The man that has shown her love is a blessing and even if that dosen't work her, husband isn't worth it honestly.

The sign language story.. I literally cried. That just hit me so so hard. She’s literally family, why exclude your own niece. The aunt is the a hole. Period.
I actually called it with the last story. There wasn't any clear indication that that was what was going on but my mind went to a cynical place where I was like I bet the only reason the husband wouldn't go be with his wife was if he had some woman he was trying to impress and not flake out on.

I would be so incredibly hurt if my sister disrespected my role as mother by claiming she would basically be his new mom. It's already such a horrible time knowing you're leaving your son in the world without his mother.
I actually called that the man was with another woman! I wondered if they were the case, b/c his friends must clearly know her (as she mentioned they all spent time together going out) and at least some of them (if not many) would have told him to “go home and be with your wife” had they actually been there with him and heard what was going on. Since they didn’t, it made me wonder.
Exactly what I thought! There’s no way the entire group of friends would support him not going to his distressed wife. Alarm bells.
Second one - my baby can sign some words which I taught him and everyone in my family can hear. He could sign for milk when he was 7 months old, which stopped lots of frustration.

I wish this were true :( the full quotation is "There is more than one way to kill a cat than by choking it with cream," found as early as 1855 (used by Charles Kingsley) and appeared frequently with some variations substituting butter for cream or dog for cat. Lots of info available on the origins of the phrase, all pretty gruesome unfortunately. Couldn't find a single thing referencing catfish but maybe the phrase evolved into a more palatable concept!

I LOVE that you talked about using sign language in the autism community, I work with autistic kids and teach my nonverbal kiddos sign language and I’ve watched how much that can change their life. Frustration, aggression, self injurious behaviors all have gone down in my clients that I’ve taught sign too. Imagine knowing exactly what you want and need and not being able to communicate that to anyone. It’s extremely frustrating and isolating. Sign language has opened doors for the kiddos I love so very much!!! It really is a beautiful language 💕 and honestly there are lots of apps out there that that can help you TEACH YOURSELF SIGN!!! There’s literally no excuse.

The ASL one infuriated me and brings up how our daughter’s first pediatrician ignorantly said for us to stop signing. We are no longer with that office. But still think about it every once in a while.
I wish ASL was mandatory in American schools. ASL is pretty exclusive to North America since other countries have their own different signs so idk why we shouldn't learn ASL for the people who have no other way of communicating other than through sign. When I was a cashier I always felt bad that I had to write on paper to communicate with deaf people because I didn't know any sign.
Same, my mom was very into me learning Spanish to "get in touch with your roots" so she wouldn't let me learn ASL in high school. Come to find out it was the wrong kind of Spanish to be related to my "roots". So no languages were learned that year!
my boyfriend can have some pretty dark humor and be offensive to me sometimes. i just tell him “jokes are supposed to be funny babe” and he knows he’s went to far, apologizes and doesn’t repeat it ever.
Hi poly person here! I just wanted to bring up the fact that it's brought up in the community so so often that open relationships and polyamory is NOT a solution for a problem in the relationship. It's not a band aid and it's not an experiment. If your relationship is bad adding more people into it will just make it worse. I'm also curious on if ground rules were ever discussed between them. There's a difference between just a warm body to have an experience with and a full blown relationship with emotions and I'm getting the feeling that what each of them wanted wasn't laid out clearly on either side. As for the story after that one every person who has been bullied has heard the phrase "what you can't take a joke?" I hope he had to walk home 🖕
My sister in law taught my nephew baby sign and he’s been able to communicate his needs to all of us since before he was even a year and a half old. It’s amazing and incredibly helpful to the parents and those that babysit because he’s able to tell us when he wants a drink, more food, and when he’s all done with something. It’s an amazing thing and doesn’t hurt anyone. That woman is being incredibly closed minded
So Thursday is my last day of classes so it's technically my Friday and there's no better way to celebrate the end of the week than with Two Hot Takes!

On the sister in the hospital story - Seriously though, my now fiance dropped his annual family trip to take me to the hospital when I lost my grandfather, and his family checked on mine. Good people care, surround yourself with them
This was a great episode. I'm glad Alejandra was back on -- she's such a nice person! Morgan was amazing, as always.
On the last story... I actually did thought about him cheating but I was like "nah, you're too traumatized that you are trying to find cheating where is not". Guess I was originally right and and I'm not happy about that
About the second story: as an intersex person I'm still dealing with the fact that we're living in a world in which we want to 'fix' all sorts of things, just to not go through the discomfort that comes with certain people being different. We think our way is best and struggle to believe that anybody wouldn't want to be exactly like us. It's a very self centered way of thinking and we're playing god with a lot of the interventions that we put on small children. We should start from a more open point in which we see 'abnormalities' as something beautiful and truly figure out (with help of respective communities) how we can be TRULY accomodating. I think in this story the sister really wants to push her way with the implants, but as she has no say over that, her main focus should be on how she can nurture the relationship with that kid. Even if that doesn't mean learning ASL, it for sure means including her in games.
Exactly! No one should be forcing people to be “normal” or “fit in,” let people live so they can grow to love themselves, “fixing” something makes a person think they are broken, when they absolutely aren’t. If a person is older(an adult) and decides they want to change something that is completely fine, but if you force a change on a child/baby(like surgeries that are done on many infant intersex individuals), it is just insane. I also hope that the world gets to a place where it embraces “abnormalities” because everyone is amazing and deserves to be respected and loved.
These stories always make me feel so lucky to have a good relationship with my boyfriends parents 😳
In regards to the girl who had an 'ugly' sweater made of her face; I was born with a very obvious, colourful, birthmark on my face.
I wasn't teased much for it and my self esteem now is great... BUT if ANYONE joked without remorse that it made me ugly they would be cut off.
Even after a genuine apology I would question what kind of person would think a joke like that was ok to voice.
i am an ASL minor and it’s sooo helpful. i’ve been teaching my friends so that we can talk when we’re at the bar/concerts when we can’t hear each other !
I recently saw a video on a baby who was born deaf. He did get the cochlear implant and sometimes all the sounds give him sensory overload and he gets upset with the sounds. So at the moments where he can’t wear his implant they sign. Even with the implant think of all the times you CANT talk back and forth. In the mornings when you’re just waking up, in the water; pools; showers. It’s another tool that can help you and your loved ones communicate. I even saw the two hearing parents signing through a window when the father was working in the yard. It’s just a great thing to know.
I started teaching my son basic signs at 6 months and he has been able to tell me when he’s hungry, thirsty, dirty(diaper change) ever since and it’s only getting better the older he gets with the more signs he’s picking up. I’m not fluent AT ALL (I know as much as he does) but it was been really awesome for us

Walter might have some internalized ableism that might have him want to keep the peace rather than “make waves” and honestly demand his and his daughters humanity be respected and honored.
I'm a person from a family who's got a dark sense of humor and "bully" each other. That guy is 100% the asshole. When I met my husband I warmed him and my family eased him into everything. We understand boundaries, there are something we know are clear lines not to cross and we don't expect everyone else to have that same humor.
i love this podcast not only because everyone on here is so funny and wise but that the crazy stories make me feel less alone especially when the comments validate the OP's feelings

When I was growing up, my dad would often make "jokes" about family members. It would always feel like a criticism or an insult was hidden behind it. You were left thinking "why would you say that; even as a joke?" You couldn't escape the feeling that it wouldn't have entered his head if he weren't on some level already thinking it. It never felt like a joke and it was often upsetting. I don't know why he did it. I do think when he realised he'd hurt someone, he would feel bad but he'd also get defensive, which is where the "it was just a joke" comes in. People are so complicated, I wish I could understand why people are the way they are, and why they do the things they do.
I swear when she said, "A Razor scooter to the ankle." I flashed back to my 10 year old self and could legit FELT that pain again 😮😅
I get dark humor, my family is kinda like that too. But It’s not “just a joke” when it’s been established many MANY times that she is insecure about her scar! Even if you find it funny, your girlfriend doesn’t! She feels like they are calling her ugly! And you as the boyfriend should TELL OFF YOUR FAMILY! It’s very obviously upsetting her, so fuckinngstop!

When I was I preschool they had us do the graduation all in sign language and I’m thankful for that. I remember a lot of parents complaining including mine but us as kids loved it and didn’t see any wrong. My grandmother used to make me sit on my hands when I talked because I ended up only talking and signing for a long time but now as an adult I don’t know what makes people think they’re issues with it.
My son has Down syndrome, he learned sign language when he was 5 months old, he’s almost 3 now and he was an almost 2 year old brother that he taught sign language to! It’s amazing!
I taught my children sign language for babies. It helped a lot to know what my children needed.
When I get too stressed, I go nonverbal and it’s hard for me to talk but also even more stressful to be unable to communicate, so I’m often forced to go verbal before I’m ready. Where I am I’m unable to find a sign language class and it would take me quite a while. I really wish that sign was a language taught in schools because it could help so many people to understand or be understood

I'm Autistic and I started learning sign language as an adult because I find it SO much easier to communicate!! Thank you for mentioning Autistic people when discussing the benifits of learning sign.
My mom always used to say every new language you learn makes a new person which I now totally agree with. I'm currently fluent in 3 languages and really hope I'll have more time after college to learn a few more. As someone who loves to travel, knowing the language makes those trips so much more personal.

I remember using sign language whilst working at a senior living facility and there was a gentleman with no ability to communicate because no one used/knew sign language. He had to just grunt , moan and wave his arms to communicate. He smiled so big the day I signed to him the first time. He lit up and started signing to me. It broke my heart 😢 But was glad to be able to give him “ a voice” . My mother taught me ASL because she took care of a deaf 🧏🏻♀️ women. I’m so glad I was taught . To this day I sign “ I love you “ to my mom.

About the last story, Whenever I was 15 my family and I were on a trip zip lining for a day(about an hour and a half away) and I rode with them. My exes brother got into a wreck and passed away he called me to tell me and I was absolutely devastated and I wanted to leave so bad I begged my parents for us to just go and they would not leave. As soon as we got back I drove to him and I stayed with him for the next eight months and did not leave his side but that is something I regret it every day of my life when I was with him that I was not able to be there because it did bother him he knew it was not my fault but he needed me.

I took a course on sign language and learned that the advantage for hearing babies to learn sigh language is that infants can understand the idea of communicating their needs before they speak. Our ability to form words starts later but our ability to point or cry for our needs starts very early. So a baby taught sign can communicate earlier in life
With the sign language story I started learning sign language about 2 months ago I’m not the best in it but I try and a week ago a deaf man walked into the restaurant I work and it felt so nice talking to him even if it’s basic ,seeing him smile made my day .
I’m fairly new to this channel so I’ve been on a binge trying to catch up on episodes. I absolutely love it here. And just hearing about the how you want to learn more ASL makes me heart warm.
I have a daughter who is profoundly deaf in both ears and it is a struggle for her at school where no one signs. The school actually gave her a iPad to communicate with pics for those who don’t know. It’s hard and it’s unfair. So thank you for trying and learning! I’m going to finish all these episodes now 🥰

Omg on the last story my first thought was “if he’s so persistent on not coming back then I feel like he’s definitely being unfaithful or something” because I feel like unless you’re doing something WRONG normal people would leave immediately regardless whatever frustration he would’ve had to miss out on the boys trip

On the topic of teaching babies sign language. It is actually good to teach them signs for things simply because they can sign with their hands before they can talk. This leads to babies a couple of months old signing for milk, saying they have a dirty dipper, are still hungry and so much more before they are capable of vocalizing those needs.
My boyfriend and I were listening to the last story and before you read the update he said the guy was cheating! I asked him what made it obvious and he said if you really love someone it’s not hard to leave a fishing trip especially one that’s only 30 minutes away
I got cheating vibes on the last story too. Because OP said this wasn’t like her husband and that she wouldn’t expect this from him. So the fact that he was acting carelessly so suddenly made me think he may be seeing someone else. When someone changes their character “all of a sudden” it’s alarming that something deeper is going on

i was talking to some of my mom friends and they were saying that teaching your kids sign language is an awesome tool to help understand your child's needs. like they can literally tell you if they're hungry or tired or need to use the restroom
instead of me skipping a year of school my parents put me in french immersion and it has helped so much, even though i live in a mainly english speaking community it has made it so much easier to learn other languages and picking up on it so much faster. also grew up with basic ASL and have used it
