I always thought Harley’s Marilyn Monroe scene was just a reaction to when every someone would physical harm/abuse her, her brain would go to her “happy place” as a coping mechanism. She had to deal with what the joker did to her somehow.
I had a similar thought, the first time I saw the movie. Something along the lines of Black Mask potentially becoming her new Mr. J and the cycle of abuse starting up again with him
@@WhyWeWatch1 That is exactly what I thought it was, and I was super worried she'd fall back into it, but then he hit her again and it seemed to like snap her out of it. Like, she remembered suddenly how awful it really was, or that he just wasn't Joker.
Another win for me is when Harley gets tranquilized towards the end of the movie, she recovers from it really fast, a subtle homage to the source material - in the comics, Harley, just like the Joker, is either immune or highly resistant to any and all toxins)
That... explains a lot. I was watching clips from Batman and Robin earlier and wondering how Harley could possibly kiss Poison Ivy and survive when Ivy produces venom from her lips. Now I know.
Wasn’t that because of poison Ivy giving her an injection though?, it doesn’t make sense in this scenario. Unless I’m thinking of a different sort of continuity because I know that poison Ivy can control her own toxins but she also injected Harley with a drug that rendered her immune to the effects of her toxins.
@@jamestheawsome100 yes poison ivy injected her, and we don’t see her physically in the movie, but in the animation in the beginning when she is talking about heart brakes you can see poison ivy so it makes sense in the movie that she already is inmune and also that injection gave her super strength
@@mephostopheles3752 in Batman the animated series, ivy gives Harley a shot that protects her from her poison so they can be around each other and she seemed to heal faster and be stronger as well. Whatever helped her survive joker’s abuse
I'm only wondering how you never mentioned the fact harley repeatedly uses her psychology back ground throughout this movie. Adding to her complexity and depth. She's a crazed loon having fun her way, but she can also get right in your head without even trying and put you further off what you thought you knew about her.
I admit, I was HIGH AS A KITE when I first saw this movie. I legit cried when the egg sandwich hit the ground. Like, I had to leave the theater, go home, cry about it until I wasn't high anymore, then come back to the theater and get another ticket to see it all the way through again.
@@alexandermarquardt597 I like the line because it was funny, that's all. Forgive me if I'm wrong. Why do I feel the sense of sarcasm in this comment was rudely poking fun at my opinion?? If you genuinely ment what you said I apologize.

I don't think the way she said it was "award winning, phenomenal acting" I just thought it was funny.
If I didn't love this film enough already, Harley is randomly giving her ladies advice that calls back to her psychology past which I love that they didn't forget who she originally was and still pokes through her "insanity" occasionally
You have no idea how great it feels for someone else to agree with you on liking a movie that everyone hates, I'm tired of reading "This movie was shit" in the comments
Amen. I think that's why Black Mask was so terrifying in this movie, he's the kind of character you've met in real life. (atleast i have) Which makes him a very real feeling villian.
I agree, that scene made me squirm and cringe, terrified for the poor woman who was just having a good time, but it was a great scene to showcase how insane he is. Arguably, to be fair, we already had that with the face cutting scene, but the scene was well done and did not glorify or romance it, it was degrading and scary as hell with having a crazy maniac giving the orders and leering at her.
P J I think the big think is that this was a movie that was directed by a woman. Your statement would be right though if it was directed by a man though. And that’s not being political it is the truth.
Favorite thing about this whole movie: FEMALE GAZE. The actresses are able to be sexy without being over sexualized. The costuming differences between Suicide Squad versus BoP is huge. The focus moved from T and A to the fighting and conversation. As a woman, its NICE to just see a movie with female characters telling a story. And a few funny nods to female issues and relationships. No secondary agenda involved. No women fighting over a dude. They dont hate each other because of a guy or just because. Ect.
Yess! 👏👏👏👏 Like the difference between the Amazon’s costumes in Wonder Woman as opposed to their horrendous costumes in Justice League! (I’ve only seen pictures of the JL ones but it’s so obvious the difference between a female director and a male director!)
Suicide squads director was a male, Birds of Preys director was a female, the actor for Harley even said she was SO uncomfortable in the Suicide Squad outfits
As someone who used to put my hair in a bun while actively doing ballet, I loved that little moment in the fight scene. If you've had your hair long for a few years, you eventually just become able to do stuff like that.
It is violence, too. Also, that is how violence usually works. How it usually feels, the helplessness, the horror. This is what abuse usually feels like.
@@marduke45 He is. But he absolutely had it coming. Very gratifying death scene. He was despicable trash, and he got thrown away like trash. He was inflated and full of himself, and he flamboyantly exploded into the hot air that used to be his flamboyant but vapid personality.
When Harley is patting Bruce and she says that she loves them both equally she is talking to the stuffed beaver as a reference to the Harley Quinn comic book series (the new one) she has a dead beaver that only she can hear.
two of the most depressing scenes in the movie: 1. the death of cheeseburger 2. the "death" of good ol' bruce Two of the best scenes: 1: return of cheeseburger 2: bruce lives
It is an egg sandwich. Probably the best looking one I've ever seen. You literally watch it being prepared right in front of you and still call it a cheeseburger?
@Karsyn zzstu Beauchamp I've seen the show. I meant she is more of the regular person Harleen Quinzel, the psychiatrist, not the crazy clown joker sidekick. At least from what I remember.
My favourite thing about the funhouse fight (apart from the hairtie moment xD) was that they kept tossing around the kid and coming to her rescue when she needed it like a group of pissed off moms lol
2:00 Those are Montoya's knuckledusters! Also, two things I feel like you missed, personally: first, I liked that Black Mask was both fun to watch and just completely awful. I like complex villains, but between the typical superhero-movie World Domination Tyrants and Former Friends, it was refreshing to have a villain who was just plain terrible, and in a way that felt realistic- a spoiled, entitled, psychopathic manchild. Second, one small detail I loved is that Harley intermittently switches into psychiatrist-mode, like during her interrogation under Sionis when she interrupts him by psychoanalysing his theatrics, and when she randomly tells Helena that revenge "rarely brings the catharsis that we hope for". It's just a nice touch- a reminder that she was someone before the Joker, and is smart and capable independently of him, but without making it feel inorganic. On a more controversial (?) note, I really didn't get the reviews that kept saying it was a man-hating feminist-propaganda movie. Even one of my favourite reviewers said that they felt Black Mask was verging on cartoonishly misogyonistic by the end- but honestly, it never felt heavy-handed to me, and every sexist moment from a male character was a variation of something I've seen or experienced IRL. And it's not like the main characters are flawless- all of them have some "bad" qualities. Harley Quinn is pretty terrible overall (and only becomes "a slightly less terrible person" over the course of the movie), Black Canary willingly works for the villain and refuses to use her abilities for good until her conscience kicks in, Montoya is a capable detective but also a heavy-drinking cowboy cop with Issues, and Huntress is murdering bad people out of revenge, not because they're bad people. This got way too long, but I wasreally happy to hear you saying that there's no "we are women, hear us roar" moment, because that's exactly my response. It's not a feminist-propaganda movie, it's a good movie that features badass female protagonists, who go up against a male villain who is terrible in multiple ways (I mean, his hair-trigger temper and face-slicing gets far more attention than his sexist comments).
For me when they complain about how the men were shown in this movie, I say one thing..."its gotham" Come.on. its the city of crime where everything is possible and being a good samaritan is unknown. In a city surrounded by crime and the fact that u can get away with anything, if course anyone would be wild and do what they wanted. Including both men predatoring on girls and women being imperfect as u mentioned in ur comment
Humans are way less likely to like a movie they can't identify with. And of course, men have a harder time identifying with a bunch of girls. Just like how women have a harder time identifying with a movie full of men. The difference is, that most DC and Marvel movies have male characters so all the male fans (which there probably are a lot of when it comes to comics) are suddenly mad because they are not used to watching a movie they can't relate to.
They feel that way cause Ian and the cast kept saying it was super feminist and he was battling misogyny. If they had kept their mouths shut nobody would have zoomed in and.focused on it.
What makes these men as villains interesting is the way almost any woman recognises how sleazy and horrible they are because they've seen the behavior in real life. It's realistic because it was made through the lense of a woman's experiences.
I have to say this movie is one of the most satisfying I've ever seen. Every few minutes I was internally cheering because it felt so GOOD. Can't even begin to explain how it made me feel seen and humanised rather than objectified an all-girl squad. It wasn't some sleepover chick-flick (although it would definitely be a great sleepover movie). It's a movie that does so many things so well and didn't make me cringe at over-sexualisation or lines about how women can control men like animals through seduction (soo overdone). It felt like I was seeing people.
@@alexandermarquardt597 Yeah unfortunately fanboys think a movie where women aren't portrayed as sexual objects is 'PC bullshit' that isn't worth watching.

@@TheOldOwl8 I can only see the first four lines of your comment. I think that's a poor marketing decision but a lot of action flicks are, consciously or unconsciously, geared towards men, yet women still see them.
This movie was just a fun time and as a big lesbian sometimes you just wanna see some ladies kick ass and dress cool. For real I wanna have as much fun with my clothes as Harley does.
I adored this movie and so did my wife. The big thing I realized was that every nit I wanted to pick honestly doesn't hold up if you apply comic book logic. Does this make sense in a real scenario? No. Would it make sense in a comic book? Oh yes, 100%. Suddenly even the most out of place or weird moments just end up that much more epic because BOOM we're looking at a LIVE ACTION COMIC BOOK AND I LOVE IT. @@alexandermarquardt597 how is Harley woke in this movie? Just by being a single woman?? By not wearing booty shorts? By kicking ass in roller-skates?? By giving somebody a hair tie??
@@alexandermarquardt597 first of all I'd like a source for them wanting to show that women are greater than men. Shouldn't be that hard to find if it's like you said. Second of all I don't think it's incriminating to say that you want to hire women in a field dominated by men. There are so many movies that had a mostly male crew behind it, I don't really have to imagine it the other way round. I find it especially not bad in a movie that has many female main characters (which is comic accurate).

Excuse me, but you missed a win for Ewan screaming "SHE'S A CHIIIILD!!!" at the top of his lungs. He killed the entire audience of my screening with this one line.
The more I watch this movie the more I like it. I think it’s extremely fun and charming. I am so glad it was rated R. I like when movies can go full out. We don’t have many of them in this genre so it was a pleasure. Also Ewan McGregor was awesome. He really enjoyed himself in this role. It was an extreme character done very well. I really hope we get more Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She is so good in the role.
I like how they wrote Roman Sionis as an MCU Tony Stark-type character. I mean, he quips and jokes while he's doing evil villain-y things. So... he's essentially MCU Tony Stark if Tony Stark was an evil sociopath who somehow became a rich-ass Mob Boss and lived his whole life in the Iron Man suit because he was horribly disfigured which is what I think drove him mad in the first place.
So I loved this movie. As I teenage girl, this movie spoke to me. Especially when Harley gave Canary a hair tie. REALISM. I like that Black mask's misogyny is from entitlement, he thinks he owns everyone. I like that Harley does kill the landlord, instead she gets his motivation because she has got a degree in psychology. I like the frantic pacing, it feels like Harley. I like how when Black mask slapped her, she had a full suckerpunch moment. I love how Huntress is awkward(also her eyeshadow is amazing) because that makes sense for her background. I love how downplayed Montoya's alcoholism is. I understood Cassandra's wanting to be like Harley. And I understood why Canary was hesitant to get involved. Also the visuals are amazing, like I actually enjoyed the fight scene. Lastly, this movie would have been less fun if it was pg13.
I think you just wrote the best review I've seen for this film. And you're right. Every single character was grounded and real in a nutso over the top world.
One detail I loved in the movie was some references to Harley's knowledge of psychology. Like when she analyses the girl explaining why she was lying, such a cool detail.
1. Like if you want to empower have some good movies on this like kll bill or blade 2. If you just want a good movie then black panther Supergirl's batman or captain America will do but will nto be empowered cu it is unrealistic howether like kll bill and blade are empowering. 3. not all dislikers are offencuve eevn if it is a feminist movie lkie for example 4. Not all-female lead movies are feminist or else no film with a male lead would empower anyone in the 80s cus no misady back in the 80s 5. Also Not all dislike are offensive. And just because it is feminist does not mean that it is immune to criticism. Like if you make a female lead movie with a budget of 20$. and people. hate it. it is because it had a lowe bidge, nto becaus it is feminist. For example, Harly quin is a stereotype and Captian marvel is unrealistic Also just because you made a feminist movie does snot mean you are immune to criticism because then everyone who did not vote for Obama and the entire democratis bacty in 2008 and 2012 was offencive. 6. I like this movie. 7. Also female and black empowering movie existed since the 80s and they did into get as much dislike even feminist movies existed back then so it is not the fist female hero movie. They wher two branches empoering movie like llk*** bill and just good movie like Diana or fmeinist movies like mulan. Also when a movie flops they look at people who do not like the studio and people who are offencive and people who watched the movie. 11. Also If just because a high percentage of people are men doe Santo mean the disliker are offencive Mabye most of the audience are men. Does that mean that since most people who not vote for Obama are white. Hence, all disliker are offencive and all his competitor are offencive too. Everyone else even whe whole democratic party is too. Like Manny's reason to dislike her she was exposed to the teseract or was not her in infinity war and Ultron captian marvel is too unrelaistic but some peoepl like unrelistic movie. 12. Also Harley quin is already a feminin steryotype a nurse that doe snot cure patient is a steriotype that women are bad doctor and the evil nurse and the fact that her tuning evil because she could not do stuf on her won and tuning evil and trickery is a elam steryotype or getting made fun and uncomfrtable by a mentally sick person she was warned and wa supposed to cure and yes morally and legally he is not mentally insane but in the movie plot he is so we consider him as that. But I still liked her also people calling people ofencive cus of her clothing is niysmart like many fmale heros and non superos int he 80s do not have revealing clothes like real fans do nto care about that but also guess what ,ongere on panther and Franklin are noir criminals but in the prequal and they are still alive Ando not criminals and people get mad, are they evicneffo*** no they just usually do these thing like Harley usually had this clothing but we may like other non relvealing elamef heros and what about blade volverine or Manny others, I mean just because female most likely have lingerie means it needs to be equal but that does not mean not at all. I mean does that mean all noir villains form the 80s need to be good? Now I personally love Harley non revealing clothes and less her old clothes but like meaning you want Harley in her old clothes does not mean all file superhero need to. 13.
Obviously the reason every homme is against harley quin is because everyone who is not a in a villain** in a villain** movie is bad and it's a Femme Club. Because in loki and other stuff the other people are mauvais people, and it's a femme only squad. And since most people in the movies are hommes therefore most people will be bad guys. However the response of the fans are, well, femmes were mistreated in other movies and complaining is hypocrite even if we think the femmmes being mistreated in other movies where mauvais. Imagine having a minority empowring movie where basically lauthing at france because of colinization or BC old movies where offencive too. Like ebacuse previous movies where mauvais doe snot mean that soignt hat is justified. And yes halrey had previously a relealing costume and some DC heros as well but not all femmes had it however in this movie all the men where villains not because the studio dislike them but because most people in movies ar men and as I said everyone who is not ain the bad side team is a bad person according to the pad person. And volverine and martian hunter and blade had rreveealing costume of costume. So unless you complain about harley and her but not them or the men being mauvais in this movie, You are not radical.
Exactly my thoughts!! I thought everything about it was so fun, even the sad and serious moments are done in a fun way, it’s refreshing and it’s something new apart from the other overproduced superhero movies nowadays (Avengers im looking at you)
I get upset when I see people call a movie shit because it doesn't live up to their comedic geniuses or their high levels of drama-expertise because many movies these days are actually pretty good if you just sit down and take your time to enjoy them instead of just being so god damn pessimistic all the time. People often call me pessimistic in real life, and while it's true a lot of the time, I take my time to see the good in things instead of seeing one bad thing, then acting like the whole thing is ruined.
You have no idea how great it feels for someone else to agree with you on liking a movie that everyone hates, I'm tired of reading "This movie was shit" in the comments
as someone who worked in a cinema, i love this film. that little extra at the end is one of my favourites. we were quite busy during the birds of prey run, and didnt get long to clean screens, usually, credits roll and everyone leaves so we can clean. then people sit there, and wait and wait. and watching them react to that, since they made us wait the entire length of the credits, which eats into our cleaning time, was very nice
Well in my Cinema it works opposite. Because people waiting were waiting for that stupid, non-important scene, we couldn't start cleaning until all people leave. Soo... Yeah, we had to do it in hurry and run quickly to clean after another movie.
Um too bad? The point of the credits is for people to watch them. That's the point of end credits scene is to encourage people to see the credits. If you are mad that it eats into your cleaning time, then that's the theater's fault, not the people.
@@cooldude2251 Uh, first off, they weren't complaining. Two, no, most people leave when the credits start. Three, how are they supposed to know a credit scene was coming? That's the MCU's thing, not DC.

Lmo honestly, why can't a movie be just good? A movie doesn't have to be a total masterpiece and please all the critics (whose critiques are mainly pretentious nitpicking that 90% of people don't give a fuck about) to be enjoyable, or at least that's what I think.

You don’t get a lot of chances to socialize and make small talk back in the old country, learning how to take bloody revenge on a bunch of capos. And it’s a take on her character I absolutely adore. She’s tough as nails but her social awkwardness makes her instantly adorable too.
Some facts about this movie: the live-action Joker stand-in that appears in one of the flashbacks is still designed to look like Leto's. The actor who played the last guy standing ('please... no more'), Shad Gaspard, has recently passed away. Daniel Pemberton made the music, win off for you for not mentioning it.
I liked how the WOC and the white women both experienced sexism differently. Sure, Harley was treated poorly by the Joker but her close relationship to a powerful white man afforded her some protection. Meanwhile, Canary's relationship to a white man afforded her no real protection. Also, I loved the resolution to everyone's plot, especially the cop's. It would have been easy to give her a huge win, but more realistically, that was stolen from her and she finally saw that the best way to change the system was from the outside. Also also, I noticed how Harley started to dress more like Harley for herself rather than the Joker, who was who she dressed for in Suicide Squad.
Joker and Harley were dating and joker was quite possessive and abusive so it was more of an upside downside sort of thing. Upside, joker protection and downside, no protection against the actual joker himself. Black mask and canary were not romantically Linked what so ever so the only “protection” with mask she at most may have got was the she is one of my things sort of protection if any. Harley was a love interest and a stooge/sidekick and possession while canary was an above average lackey that was pretty to look at who could also kick ass for black mask. This wasn’t a difference between white vs non white sexism. It was beneficial while extremely harmful relationship vs hot female lackey of a sexist male boss
The Joker is clearly mad as a bag of cats, but he is does not meet the legal definition of insanity. The insanity defence is HARD to win - only 1% of legal cases in the US attempt to argue "not guilty by reason of insanity" and less than 50% of those 1% of cases win. The Joker knew where and when he was in reality, he knew what he was doing was wrong, he knew it would hurt people, he knew it would have real-world consequences, and he chose to do it BECAUSE he likes hurting people.

This was my favourite movie I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve always connected with Harley in a deep way. The thing that I loved about BoP is the manic energy and how aggressive it feels. The way I described it to my friends is that is if WW, Captain Marvel and BoP were your sisters, and your boyfriend did you wrong, WW and CM would give him a stern talking to or a punch in the nose, but BoP would burning their fucking house down. I can’t be the only woman who is angry and frustrated with the world and this movie told me “hey we see it too”. Montoya having her hard work ignored, the guy feeding Harley drinks until she can’t stand, Black Canary being fetishized by Black Mask... These have all happened in my life or to my friends. Also, the costume design was impeccable. No one fought in high heels, everyone looked like they were real clothes, not a costume. FYI the part when Harley is on skates getting pushed by the car is similar to a popular drill in roller derby called shopping carts, where you pull a line of skaters who are all crouched like that. Anyway, thank you for coming to my TED talk.
What's wrong with the pfp? That she has black lipstick? Your summary is completely accurate for me and every girl I've seen this movie with. I know guys won't understand - I wish they would though because the feeling you get as a woman seeing this film after experiencing or knowing of the experiences mentioned above really makes you feel seen. Also, the fact that Harley's fashion changed drastically - in Suicide Squad she wore booty shorts and heels and a shirt that read "Daddy's Little Monster". In BoP she's wearing rainbows and sequins and comfortable shoes - loud clothing that's not intended to please anyone but herself. Every girl I saw it with picked up on it because we're more aware of it than guys. Again - not an indictment to men who don't see it, just an observation that it's more obvious for women.

Honestly, I love Harley‘s costume choices in this film. In „Suicide Squad“ her costume looked like it was made to look sexy and seductive. In „Birds of Prey“ it looked like Harley just wanted to have fun. Her pigtails aren’t long enough for anyone to grab anymore. Her bags look more like fun then to „seductively surround her face“. Her shirt isn’t strategicly ripped to be sexy. And most important of all: She doesn’t wear a fucking dog collar!!! I got that post from a pinterest post! This wasn’t originally written by me!! (Sorry for my bad english.)
@P J Eeh, Wonder Woman is also made with a female gaze (female director), but I think where Birds of Prey feels different is in both the 'vibe' of the story (mythic, a serious story that's about a *GOD* and told from that god's perspective VS a recovering-from-a-breakup crime-romp from the perspective of a certified nutcase) and that Wonder Woman was made with like, the NEED to draw men, to get the buzz and prestige, whereas Birds Of Prey was like, 'if men come, cool, but we don't NEED them to like it', and that difference in vibe is where men feel un-catered to, I guess. WW was made for a gender-neutral audience, BoP was specifically for women.
I really like how the movie didnt sexualized the shit out of her. It displayed Harley as a legit person with thoughts and feelings rather than eye candy shoe horned for fan service.
The jail break scene can be looked from another perspective: It's all in Harley's head. The glitter, confetti, and smoke are how she sees it. Those guys are dead as hell and we watched them get splattered. That was blood but in Harley's head it's pretty glitter. Also I have to respect how much stunt work Robbie did in this film. She should always be a win. She has earned it in my opinion.
I like that theory, but I have a hard time actually believing it. If she had done that indeed, I doubt Montoya would have been so on board to ally herself with Harley.
Someone said the confetti in the police station is actually blood and we were seeing the scene through the mind of Harley. I though it was a nice theory.

3:55 I love how the red & blue dust fits with Harley‘s red & blue highlights. Also, when I saw the movie, I always thought that the confetti and mist are only in Harley‘s head and in reality she killed those dude’s and that was blood.
I never thought of that, but it makes complete sense. Especially since none of the cops get up and come after her as she tears through the station. I remember that was a bit nit-pick several people have. Love it!
Same, I always thought that the confetti and mist was a way to show Harley's craziness in the movie. She sees it as confetti and mist but was actually blood
I thought this movie end up being exactly what it was trying to be, and I loved it. Not every movie needs to threaten the end of the universe. Most of the time, I'd rather see an (anti-)hero save a little kid. Far more relatable, and much easier to suspend your disbelief.
i think something genuinely distinct about this movie is that it isnt a “we are women hear us roar” movie but id say its about women supporting each other and having each others backs
Sam Chiang Except Harley outfits look better. Seriously it seems Margot Robbie wanted everyone to look worse then her. Also this is definitely a girl power movie.
Jim Harrison excuse me every woman in that movie had me quaking and i want black canary to fucking obliterate me. and yes, it is a girl power movie, but its not a girl power movie in the sense that the only defining characteristic of female characters are “i am strong”. each character has their own vices. its cool that this is a movie that doesnt rely so heavily on the protag as “strong independent woman” and more on the relationships that the protag makes, in addition to the way that she develops due to those relationships

When he mentioned living in a Studio Ghibli film, I just want to eat the food from those films. I'm shocked he hasn't done any of those movies. I remember watching Spirited Away when it first came out and then watching Toonami when they did the Month of Miyazaki. All of those movies are awesome!
Avoid the foods that turn you into a pig! (But yeah...it would be awesome to live there). If you ever get the chance to visit, the Studio Ghibli museum is a masterpiece. kinda like walking through mickey mouse's house at Disneyland but way cooler
I think it's also because the channel focuses on looking for the good in underrated, "bad" (by general consensus), and divisive films. And the Ghibli movies are all quite widely beloved. While I know that he has done all of the Marvel films (partly to reach a wider UA-cam audience I'm sure) and Lord of the Rings for example, I think the spirit of the channel is still mostly rooting for underdog movies. I think he will eventually get around to the Ghibli films though, but I think it's not a priority and tons of other people have done it, so it's going to be a while.
i loved the things they added in for people that know harley as a character and follow the comics, for example giving her a hyena because of bud and lou, the stuffed beaver she talks to in the comics, the fact she's in roller derby and just the achrobatics and her anolizing people because she was a therapist also throwing a tiny hint of her bisexuality and ivy into the mix
one of my favorite moments in the movie was the scene between Harley and and Canary of "hey, your that singer no one listens to" (not even an insult because she's a lounge singer) and canary's quick "hey, your that asshole no one likes" and Harleys immediate insulted reaction
I love Harley's reds and blues, and how they're always showing them around her, especially in the police station where the smoke from her smoke grenades perfectly balances in the background with her pigtails while she walks out of it, I love it
I almost did a spit take and exclamed "Whait, what!" when I watched the behind the scenes on my blu ray about the Hyena, this is some cool piece of CG. Hearing you compare Harley to deadpool helps me understand why I like this movie. Also, now I can't think of anything greater than a Harley Quinn and Deadpool teamup! I have not heard about the rule of cool before, but I'm all in!
I must say this was my personal favorite DCEU film because of how relentlessly fun it was with the amazing soundtrack (which is one of my favorites with Promare), the perfect casting (they even got Mary Elizabeth Winstead, my personal favorite!), fantastic action choreography (that flip in the cells, Huntress bouncing around), and a bright visual style (I love pastel colors!)
13:20 I mean, to be honest, I've seen longboards go those kinds of speeds so I don't think it'd be too far off to say this is possible if Harley had the leg strength (which she has). I would also probably think that this is something Harley would plan ahead and have some sort of custom wheels for, which ain't too far off given the bulletproof corset 5 minutes prior
It would be really interesting to hear Margot Robbie talk about the differences on set for BoP with a woman director and writers and so many women cast mates vs Suicide Squad that was written/directed by men and was a lot of men cast mates
I literally screamed NOOOOOOOOO!!! in the theatre lol I loved eggs, (bacon, ham or sausage) & cheese sandwiches. All the while, my fiancé laughed but j was devastated! 😥 I love breakfast sandwiches lol
Yes. Here's what'll break your heart even more. Margot Robbie is deathly allergic to chicken eggs. They had to use duck eggs and, if you've never had any fried duck eggs before, is super rich and delicious. I've actually stopped cooking with chicken eggs and I have duck eggs all the time.
I like the fact that harley got to do the pro wrestler moves cause most people forget harley quinn has super strength Also next we need to get a gotham vixens movie with Catwoman,Ivy and Harley
Did anyone notice the awesome little detail when Zsasz opens his shirt? He has three cuts that are still red and fresh because he recently killed the three Keo family members.
Something you overlooked, its subtle but harely grabs the picture from the nun school before her house is blown up. Showing it has sentimental value to her, and explaining its existance besides contrived backstory.
I really loved how they showed Harley dissociating, with the song for example. She's been dissociated since the vat, and goes deeper into it when awful stuff happens
8:00 Harley is talking to the beaver. His name is Bernie, he appears in the Harley Quinn comics. He talks to her... So she is replying to him. Not talking to the audience or breaking the 4th wall.
The scene where she drives the truck into the plant that was such an important place to her relationship with the Joker is legendary and SO satisfying.
Hey there! I just wanted to suggest three winnable movies: "Song of the Sea" an Irish film about Celtic folklore "Kirikou and the Sorceress" a French film about Guinean folklore "Like Crazy" an Italian film about two women who escape from a mental institution in search of happiness
@@Matcharsiu Michel Ocelot's style is very unique. The scenes in his movies look like they are all different settings on a stage, and his storytelling techniques follow the format of folktales. This is rather strange at times, but can also be a positive for its anormality. I Also think the core message of not believing in witches and charlatans is one that can still be important to this day. And the animation is beautiful.
Yesss. The reason I loved this movie was because it wasn't sexualizing and demeaning, nor was it ultra serious, nor was it "look! We have lady heroes and they are so cool and women :) Give us money and clout? :)". It was it's own thing, and I totally related to the vibes.
Having now watched Birds of Prey on Netflix, there is something that is undeniable: Its definetly the best martial arts movie DC has brought out. I hope there's going to be more Harley movies. It also helped that I've either forgotten the controversy surrounding this movie or have never really known it
i think what's great about birds of prey and why i (and other women) like it so much while so many guys don't is smth someone else pointed out to me: so many movies are primarily male led, acted, directed, etc. so men are used to seeing themselves represented. the movies are aimed for their gaze whereas a lot of women watching those movies have to adapt their view to see it from a man's perspective to enjoy it more (which is part of why i personally loved birds of prey and frozen 2, which are more female-gaze-oriented, but i don't really like a lot of other movies/going to the theater). however, men aren't used to watching movies that aren't tailor made for their eyes only, and so when they watch birds of prey, they don't like it. ofc, this definitely doesn't apply to everyone, and the person who originally said this didn't think so either, but i do think it explains some of the controversy around birds of prey. sure, it has plot holes and it's not necessarily the perfect movie, but so many other superhero movies have those plot holes and are pardoned bc they're for the male gaze. plot twist: things for people who aren't part of the dominant culture don't have to be perfect, and just like men can enjoy imperfect movies bc they're male-led, women can enjoy imperfect movies bc they're female-led and don't necessarily have to have a better reason so psa for my brother: pls stop nitpicking me when i say i like it, _gabriel_
Agree 100 percent. And also some dudes just want to feel like they are a part of an internet community and will do and say anything to stay validated in their straight white male virtual realities.
whenever women go to see a movie about a male lead there will always be female supporting characters in major roles who are presented positively and who the audience is supposed to like, women are used to seeing themselves represented too, why shouldnt men get to see themselves in major positive supporting roles in female led movies?
@@bloodysparkles5372 you said men are used to seeing themselves represented, so are women. women get positive representation in male led movies, men only get to play unlikeable jerks in female led movies.

I’m glad I never heard any of the controversy for this film. I like to try and avoid news about movies that interest me, but sometimes the internet makes it hard.
Thanks for this. A small thing I enjoyed was Winstead's social awkwardness which is of course how she would be with her childhood and formative years. It's a great touch to lean into that.
I got the point about the title here, I think naming the movie "Birds of Prey" resulted in the biggest misdirection ever took by a studio, and the fun fact is that when you come by the end of the movie you don't even care, because the movie was actually good. Yeah, campy, goofy and Deadpooly(ish), but it worked. EDIT: for the ones who wonders, my comment wasn't a critique, I liked the movie and I though it was brilliant to call the movie Birds of Prey and the fantabolus emancipation of one Harley Quinn, even if calling it the other way around would have been more respectful for the audience that maybe expected more character development for the rest of the crew, please don't get me wrong it's just an opinion
I really love these vids but I gotta say I’m a little disappointed that you didn’t mention Harley using her expertise on multiple characters like, the woman straight up a PhD in psychology , she even says it in the film, it should be def a win showing how while she def is batsh*t she is also really smart and she uses that throughout the movie. Also the soundtrack for this movie is dope. And while I know the general “women power” thing is a little more subtle (than it could be) in this movie the whole “female solidarity” thing is a little more obvious and I for one would have loved to hear about it. The hair tie thing was ONE instance of that but there were so much more, and women so RARELY get a movie that even bothers to have one 30 sec scene like that, heck we rarely get a movie with 2 female characters total. It would have been nice to see those kinds of things .... noticed I guess. Just a female perspective, but overall a good Wins vid, as usual! Much love!
she's an incredibly incompetent psychiatrist though, we saw in suicide squad how she gave a machine gun to her patient cause she thought he was hot and in the comics we saw that she got her degree by sleeping with her professors
It is such an amazing show it is just sad that most men thought it was about man hating when it was never about sexism in the show. It was just about Harley and the gang. The title was also short tho, if they put Harley X Birds of Prey it might have been better.
it was about man hating, the writer made sure that every male character in the movie was presented negatively even though every male led superhero movie ever made always includes female characters in large positive supporting roles. it was like this movie didnt want male audiences to like it.
@@andyrobin7196 Why can't men like a movie where the men aren't praised? Women are forced into a patriarchal society where women have to settle for the "supporting" roles? Just bc you don't like something doesn't mean only your perspective is valid.
I loved this movie. The egg sandwich scene is the most relatable movie scene I have ever experienced. I saw it twice in theaters just to see it again. Edit: Also, I think the E in Birds of Prey is supposed to be the Brass Knuckles Montoya uses
One thing I loved is that the characters are strong for a reason. The advertising made me believe this was just a forced “girl power” type of film, but everyone’s strengths plays into their character. Huntress is a trained assassin, Montoya is a cop, Harley is obvious and Canary most probably know some self defence. Them being strong felt natural and never forced.
i saw this movie with my dad and when he came out saying he thought it was okay i was baffled. genuinely think this movie is fantastic wnd i am happy u saw how good it was (the costumes deserved more wins if u ask me. harleys clothes are magnifique)
I loved the little references to them not being straight especially the fact there was an ex which we barely see when it comes to wlw relationships. It was just really nice to see the little things that weren't there for "wow look our first gay character!" Yet still made it clear they weren't straight.
I've watched Grave of the Fireflies several times - the first time I drove 50 miles to an independent cinema screening, because that was the only way to see it back then. I'm not sure any other film has the power to break me the way this film can. Subsequent viewings might be even tougher because I know where it is going, and the crushing inevitability of the situation is too much to deal with.
Everyone kept complaining about the fight scenes being so slow or poorly cut. They did that on purpose! Honestly, I think they did to show the rawness of the fighting. Like, these girls aren't your perfect superheroes. They slapped together their weapons and started fighting.
I like Harley in the shows and few comics I've read. Hated her in Suicide Squad (hated the whole movie really) and talked a lot of shit about this movie from the trailers alone. I was happy and surprised after actually watching Birds of Prey though. Turns out is DCs most underrated movie and the only one I'll voluntarily rewatch.

I had a similar thought, the first time I saw the movie. Something along the lines of Black Mask potentially becoming her new Mr. J and the cycle of abuse starting up again with him

Hard agree!
It almost got prevented from being in the movie because the studio thought it was too much.
Ect.

Less mom and more like angry aunties
Kinda cool that Huntress gave Cassandra the toy car to hold onto. I loved Huntress.
For me when they complain about how the men were shown in this movie, I say one thing..."its gotham"
Come.on. its the city of crime where everything is possible and being a good samaritan is unknown. In a city surrounded by crime and the fact that u can get away with anything, if course anyone would be wild and do what they wanted. Including both men predatoring on girls and women being imperfect as u mentioned in ur comment
Agreed

We don’t have many of them in this genre so it was a pleasure. Also Ewan McGregor was awesome. He really enjoyed himself in this role. It was an extreme character done very well. I really hope we get more Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She is so good in the role.
So glad Ryan Renolds walked so Margot Robbie could run. (also he ran plenty too)
I like how they wrote Roman Sionis as an MCU Tony Stark-type character.
Don’t forget Logan and Joker.
@@Wednesdaywoe1975 thanks

*doesn’t kill the landlord

One detail I loved in the movie was some references to Harley's knowledge of psychology. Like when she analyses the girl explaining why she was lying, such a cool detail.
1. Like if you want to empower have some good movies on this like kll bill or blade
2. If you just want a good movie then black panther Supergirl's batman or captain America will do but will nto be empowered cu it is unrealistic howether like kll bill and blade are empowering.
3. not all dislikers are offencuve eevn if it is a feminist movie lkie for example
4. Not all-female lead movies are feminist or else no film with a male lead would empower anyone in the 80s cus no misady back in the 80s
5. Also Not all dislike are offensive. And just because it is feminist does not mean that it is immune to criticism. Like if you make a female lead movie with a budget of 20$. and people. hate it. it is because it had a lowe bidge, nto becaus it is feminist.
For example, Harly quin is a stereotype and Captian marvel is unrealistic
Also just because you made a feminist movie does snot mean you are immune to criticism because then everyone who did not vote for Obama and the entire democratis bacty in 2008 and 2012 was offencive.
Imagine having a minority empowring movie where basically
lauthing at france because of colinization or BC old movies where offencive too.

I get upset when I see people call a movie shit because it doesn't live up to their comedic geniuses or their high levels of drama-expertise because many movies these days are actually pretty good if you just sit down and take your time to enjoy them instead of just being so god damn pessimistic all the time. People often call me pessimistic in real life, and while it's true a lot of the time, I take my time to see the good in things instead of seeing one bad thing, then acting like the whole thing is ruined.

as someone who worked in a cinema, i love this film. that little extra at the end is one of my favourites. we were quite busy during the birds of prey run, and didnt get long to clean screens, usually, credits roll and everyone leaves so we can clean. then people sit there, and wait and wait. and watching them react to that, since they made us wait the entire length of the credits, which eats into our cleaning time, was very nice
Good for u buddy
Well in my Cinema it works opposite. Because people waiting were waiting for that stupid, non-important scene, we couldn't start cleaning until all people leave. Soo... Yeah, we had to do it in hurry and run quickly to clean after another movie.
Um too bad? The point of the credits is for people to watch them. That's the point of end credits scene is to encourage people to see the credits. If you are mad that it eats into your cleaning time, then that's the theater's fault, not the people.
People are allowed to sit there, even if there's no scene.
@@cooldude2251 Uh, first off, they weren't complaining. Two, no, most people leave when the credits start. Three, how are they supposed to know a credit scene was coming? That's the MCU's thing, not DC.

Good point

@@hyenaedits3460 As a bi, I think you're completely right.
Alex Gilmour Agree!

I think Margot said she was uncomfortable with what she wore in suicide squad. so the next couple appearances she isn't overly sexual

I just wanted to suggest three winnable movies:
"Song of the Sea" an Irish film about Celtic folklore
"Kirikou and the Sorceress" a French film about Guinean folklore
"Like Crazy" an Italian film about two women who escape from a mental institution in search of happiness
Hey! May I ask why Kirikou and the Sorceress is a great film? I watched it but I thought it was a little weird.
The secret of kells is also a great movie
@@shawndvorak5899 yeah, I know, that would be awesome too.

Deadpool: I break the fourth wall!
Harley: That’s a fourth wall?
I really would like to see more Harley, and Cass stuff. Their dinamic was amazing, and I'd love to see more of just them being chaotic.

I loved that movie
Yesss. The reason I loved this movie was because it wasn't sexualizing and demeaning, nor was it ultra serious, nor was it "look! We have lady heroes and they are so cool and women :) Give us money and clout? :)". It was it's own thing, and I totally related to the vibes.

Yep
It’s seriously an underrated movie
@Ballbust literally how
Having now watched Birds of Prey on Netflix, there is something that is undeniable: Its definetly the best martial arts movie DC has brought out.
@@andyrobin7196 did i... imply that men shouldn't get to have supporting roles?
@@bloodysparkles5372 you said men are used to seeing themselves represented, so are women. women get positive representation in male led movies, men only get to play unlikeable jerks in female led movies.
@@andyrobin7196 LMAOOO that's what u took away from this??? if you're so dead set on misinterpreting everything being said here i won't stop you, but just in case you want to try to get the point, think about the dc movie universe bop is set in and come up with as many examples of movies as you can where the main characters' group has more than ~two women in it.
for reference, usually those same groups have more than double the amount of men in them.
They should’ve just made it about Harley and left out the other nobodies.
@@cokebear1337 salty much
@@clunkwestweed4541 Salty about what? Harley was the only one of the main cast that was ever good. Having the others just dilutes her screentime.
Yeah but the only problem is the person gotta watch the movie first
Its pathetic that you have to qualify your opinion.
Much love!
@@noviglove8093 Oh good lord, you're spamming your gibberish on threads on this video too. Go away dude.
she's an incredibly incompetent psychiatrist though, we saw in suicide squad how she gave a machine gun to her patient cause she thought he was hot and in the comics we saw that she got her degree by sleeping with her professors
It is such an amazing show it is just sad that most men thought it was about man hating when it was never about sexism in the show. It was just about Harley and the gang. The title was also short tho, if they put Harley X Birds of Prey it might have been better.
It is about sexism. But rather... Like many experience it, just like the everyday shit women just have to deal With. Yet.
it was about man hating, the writer made sure that every male character in the movie was presented negatively even though every male led superhero movie ever made always includes female characters in large positive supporting roles. it was like this movie didnt want male audiences to like it.

I ate an egg sandwich after I saw the movie in honor of the one Harley lost. RIP perfect sandwhich.
Jesus christ I'm so sorry to hear that.
Bunch of girls beating +100 men felt too forced.
