I’m really glad Peele changed the ending. Horror movies that put characters through so much and then don’t even let them Earn Their Happy Ending just bum me out. The bait and switch of the cop/Rod was amazing too. First you think it’s police and you already know where it’s heading. Then it’s, finally, Rod which gives great pay-off to both that cop-scare and the entire Rod B-plot.
@@randallreed7862 I totally agree. I get that it sorta would have been realistic, because when I saw the red and blue light my stomach immediatley dropped, because everyone in the audience knew how that looks. But Rod was the one lifeline Chris had. He knew where he was and was, although jokingly, concerned with his well-being. It would have been a loose end if Rod had just accepted that Chris never left Rose's parents house.
I agree, the way it ended was really good, especially compared with the alternate ending. If he had gone to prison that would have been so awful!!! Movie endings can ruin an otherwise wonderful film.

You missed the part where Rose puts her arm around Chris neck like a noose, her red and white stripes on her sweater and his blue jacket make the American flag
Something I really loved about the color theory: when Chris meets Logan he’s wearing a blue ribbon in his hat, but almost at the same time the old lady gives him something wrapped in red, which enters Logan’s suit... enters inside of him. So, why would Jordan want to do that? Easy, because when Logan receives the flashlight from Chris, he starts to bleed from his nose, the red is exiting his body and now he is really him. Also, the red sweater from Rose (a beautiful RED flower that can hurt you) and the blue shirt from Chris (Christ, that’s the part of Chris in all of this, he’s the liberator. Plus, his last name is Washington, just as the liberator of the USA) form a sad USA flag
"Washington" is an ironic choice here. Yes, Chris is a liberator, but the implication is that Chris himself is descended from slaves the historical George Washington owned.
The amount of symbolism in this movie makes my book worm heart so happy, I feel giddy when I find symbolism in movies (partly because I can feel smart for once and partly because books)

@@PampdArt honestly I wouldn't consider cinemasins or the nostalgia critic particularly valid critics considering their videos are maybe 10% actual criticism and the rest is comprised of hyperbole and jokes that have gotten less funny over the years, I wouldn't take much of what they say seriously. @@PampdArt You are right though. So many review channels' careers are to look at movies or video games and say "Man this is terrible! Let me tell you all about it!" but rarely do they try to make it fair and give the movie or game any points for doing things right. The title is "This is bad" so they're not going to say "Well they did this right." Either all of it is terrible, or none of it is. Despite a title like CinemaWins, I feel like he's very fair and isn't just kissing the movie's ass for being a competently made film. He understands the story and the characters and their motivations, where as CinemaSins barely watches the movie and sins it because he didn't pay attention.
The scariest thing about the family isn't the bodysnatching, it's the fact that they are very possible as people. That much cognitive dissonance in the family over the years, nobody questioning the moral implication of their actions, that is terrifying. And common, sadly.
I think it’s also important to point out how Rose wore blue in the beginning. However, she was driving a red car. It shows how she pretended to be something for Chris but was something for family and buyers.
The real Georgina starting to cry could actually be a hint that this transplantation (Georgina into Grandma) was probably one of if not the first official transplantation (her photo is the last we see in Rose's victim's photo album). This could mean that the procedure wasn't completely perfect, leaving the real Georgina with a little bit more control than the other victims.
Rose really hit me good😂I mean...I loved her in the movie. The whole time it sounded like she was the one that wasn’t racist in this totally racist family, and plus, I didn’t see Georgina’s original self in the pictures so when he’s like “GIMME THE KEYS!” and she’s fumbling I felt like she’s still not one of them. I though she was brainwashed like Georgina and Walter. And thennnn boom
Sad thing that the actress has stated annoys her, is fans trying to get her to say Rose's been hypnotized by her mother to do what she did. She considers it frustrating because they can't accept her cutesy woke behavior is an act, that shes perfected over multiple victims. During filming, to find out what kind of person she was playing, she asked Peele 'Would continue this if her parents died?' And was point blank told 'Yes', so she's aware of the character she's playing, and feels people trying to make her a victim in all this are missing the point of the character

someone probably already pointed this out but when they hit the deer and chris walks out to see it, his shoes have blue laces. to everyone else it might just look like a style chose (with the primary blue coloring to red which is still symbolic) but it’s lace coding of shoes, especially docs. blue means anti-racism and anti-fascism and many more things (yellow also means this ). if his laces were any other color it would still mean something. for example red means neoNazism and pro fascism and again many more things. just a cool detail cuz of how colors play into this film
@@sturm9087 I'm months late to a question asked of a 2 year old comment, but I did some quick research on this. What it all seems to point to as an origin is England in the 80's. It started with reggae and ska, which started to have anti-racism messages more prominently in their music. This created a schism of skinheads where the racist ones broke off and listened exclusively to something else. These skinheads also decided to wear white laces to symbolize white power. The remaining skinheads, who still listened to the ska and reggae, got pissed that they were getting lumped in with the racists and started wearing yellow laces to say "hey! I'm not with them and I don't support them!" This subculture war then spread to the USA and other places, with the shoelace colours being adopted with them. Red does indeed stand for Nazis and NeoNazis because it originally meant the wearer had "spilled blood for the white race". After all, wearing white laces while you mob and kick a man to death = your laces are gonna get stained red. Blue, meanwhile, is interesting because it comes with multiple interpretations. It either means that the wearer has killed a cop/is anti-cop, or it could mean the wearer is anti-racist. Another interpretation claims that the wearer is sXe, a "Straight Edge", meaning they don't drink, smoke, do drugs, ect while doing their usual punk stuff. There was also an article I found about "nautical punks" who interpret blue laces as meaning the wearer had a friend die at sea. Tbh everything I look up about blue laces has people doubting the modern definition, but I think regardless of if it's true or not, the most well-known one one is the interpretation of the wearer being anti-cop or a cop killer.
@@conspiracypanda1200 huh thats pretty interesting. So red and yellow laces were used by neonazis to separate each other from the different groups. The blue laces to me sound like an unrelated movement to the red and yellow laces of the neonazis. It sounds like something the black panthers in the US would have done although I don’t know if they actually did. Never would have suspected this all started over reggae music.
@@sturm9087 I think you are mistaking skinheads with nazis, back in England, skinheads were just bald punks who wore working clothes as a fashion and political statement, but sadly, they became more associated with facists going on.
In the beginning of the movie, he actually said something about accidentally going to a wrong place. He says the name of the lake where Rose and her family live. But said that he got turned around and now he’s in some creepy suburb. Total foreshadowing to what’s about to go down.
What heightened the scare factor for me with this movie was that I studied psychology for a while and the idea of conditioning people without their knowledge always gets to me. I actually have a conditioned fight-or-flight response to certain bell chimes that just never went away (I consented to the experiment), but as soon as I saw Missy establish a trigger, my inner voice literally started screaming get out up to the sunken place scene.
There are some many things to love about this movie aesthetically but I always love that first introductory shot of Georgina, the reflection on the black marble countertop echoing her entrapment in the sunken place. Chills.
One of the other metaphors in the movie is 'Buck' is also a word used to describe black men, and the fact that Chris uses a buck's head to kill Dean. Also I think the deer he kills is a doe, a female deer. Another reference to his mother? There are so many consistent motifs in this film. Visually, linguistically, thematically. A truly brilliant debut.
i just realized that, when Chris is trying to get away in the car near the end of the movie 18:47, he takes a metal helmet out of the seat. Jeremy was wearing that helmet when he kidnapped Andre 20:38
12:11 it’s subtle, but Mom Armitage has similar speech patterns, “No, no, no, no”, as a callback to Georgina’s first “no, no, no, no”. When you hang out with your parents, you tend to pick up their little quirks.
I still remember the first time I watched this movie and realizing in that scene with Georgina saying "no no no" that it was her trapped and fighting for control in her own body, and my entire being sank. I audibly gasped as I realized what was happening.
rose's character completely changing after she puts her hair up and that signalling us seeing a different side of her is... wow. i really like this film.
And the look on his face after he decides to show mercy...he really loved her and despite what she did, some part of him still loves for her or at least still possibly clings to feelings he had. He's broken by what she's done and not just mad at her, but also disappointed by what she's done.
16:48 I realised that other problem with the blind guys theory a week ago but I couldn't put it into the right words - thank you! And thank you for reassuring me I wasn't the only one to notice that
That scene with Roro on the phone with Rod while she’s still pulling the Rachel personality out. Is legit the best example of why trust issues are a thing. So glad you mentioned that scene.
I like this movie a lot. My favorite character is definitely Rod. I think the thing I liked about this is how it explored another side of racism. The side where people overstate how non racist they are, instead of being outright offensive. Also how Chris isn't taken back by this stuff and (sadly) is just used to her. I'd say it's more unsettling than scary, but I prefer shows/movies that are like that anyways. :03
My theories. Yall have probably heard some of these. 1. The fruit loops is hinting of not mixing whites with colors. 2. White ppl in black cars, reminiscent of white people in black bodies 3. The reason Dean hated dears so much saying “one down, another 100k to go” he hates the deer so much because people used to call black people “buck” and buck is another word for a deer. 4. When everyone is arriving to the party, walter greets some of the guests. He greets them because they are the grandpas old friends. What i’m saying is that this movie is a hugh brainfuck
You can also notice that the first scene in Chris’s apartment pictures a photo of a white kid with a bag or something covering his face in black and white. So many good details!
Nah that was CinemaSins who did this movie shortly after it came out. You know, the guy a lot of people take seriously despite him having claimed to make satirical videos that are ultimately more harmful for film criticism than they are good for comedy.
King Dalz yo this scene scared me but then again it was hilarious at the same time like he running in the dark so creepily but like why the hell is you runnin😂😂😂
I was only able to watch this film once because it's so traumatic. Even watching this video made me tear up a little bit. Jordan Peele is an unforgettable genius.
Something you missed or maybe didn't know; the music coming from the car at the beginning of the movie is the song "Run Rabbit, Run". Literally screaming at Dre to run as he is in danger.
Saw this opening night with a rowdy crowd (I live in Oakland) who loudly reacted to everything, there was absolute silence when the cop car rolled up at the end, because we all knew what was about to happen, and EVERYONE absolutely lost their shit when they saw it was Rod. Peele's original ending would have been awful, and their definitely would have been some anger and bitterness in the air as everyone left the theater.

the lady touching chris at 8:30 reminds me of how slave buyers would touch and prod at slaves so that to see how healthy and strong the slaves were before bidding, just like examining cattle
At 18:47 , Jordan doesn’t like assassin’s creed. It was actually the helmet used by the brother in the family ( which I forgot the name of) to kill the first guy at the beginning of the movie. You can actually see him wear it at 0:37 . Crazy right.

They where like "If we don't take them as our slaves, they'll never have work and a life" way back when slavery was a thing... And like mentioned is this still a thing today, just not to such an extreme level.

@@egziverpendlebury2431 I believe they were quite obviously referring to the western world, possibly specifically the u.s.
slavery in the u.s. is no longer legal, and if it happens it isn't based on race but rather is the result of smaller human trafficking rings.
Furthermore; this isn't an English class. People don't need to type with perfect grammar so long as you can understand their meaning, that is all language is. A method of conveying meaning and ideas.

You act like English people can't subjugate Irish people or Somalian people enslaving Eritreans. It may not be the American version of race since all those Ethnicites would be either Black and White despite being different people from different native lands, historical empires, and customs, and they just call it all "Contemporary African slavery" or "Russian Slavery" but it is definitely subjugating a different Ethnic group than the traffickers themselves.

Peele himself said that wasn't explicitly the case, although he liked the theory. He said it was more of a small character touch just to reflect how methodical her mind worked.
Either reading's good though, they don't have to be mutually exclusive.
And on 8:31 if paused a girl in white is being mixed with (Daniel's) blue and her red

It would have been a loose end if Rod had just accepted that Chris never left Rose's parents house.

@@Princessa-nu9je I highly doubt that. When interviewed or responding to comments, the CinemaSins guy repeatedly flop flops between saying CS is a parody and saying it's legitimate criticism. Colin Da Communist damn that’s a good one

Mindblown!
Holy shit, IDK if the red thing was planned on that level, but it's awesome
"Washington" is an ironic choice here. Yes, Chris is a liberator, but the implication is that Chris himself is descended from slaves the historical George Washington owned.

@@michaelmegson2778 I know, they were just the first people to come to mind on the topic atleast.
Oh yeah

I though she was brainwashed like Georgina and Walter. And thennnn boom
Geez 😂 you were so confused throughout this film
Sad thing that the actress has stated annoys her, is fans trying to get her to say Rose's been hypnotized by her mother to do what she did. She considers it frustrating because they can't accept her cutesy woke behavior is an act, that shes perfected over multiple victims.
During filming, to find out what kind of person she was playing, she asked Peele 'Would continue this if her parents died?' And was point blank told 'Yes', so she's aware of the character she's playing, and feels people trying to make her a victim in all this are missing the point of the character
My friends all said the same thing as you "oh! He decides to show mercy cus he's better!"
But y'all are wrong. Death by gunshot wound to the stomach is probably one of the most painful ways to die due to a gunshot. They may not have meant it that way, but I watched that scene and thought "ohhhhhhh he's gonna let that woman suffer"

someone probably already pointed this out but when they hit the deer and chris walks out to see it, his shoes have blue laces. to everyone else it might just look like a style chose (with the primary blue coloring to red which is still symbolic) but it’s lace coding of shoes, especially docs. blue means anti-racism and anti-fascism and many more things (yellow also means this ). if his laces were any other color it would still mean something. for example red means neoNazism and pro fascism and again many more things. just a cool detail cuz of how colors play into this film
I’m just curious in what way does blue mean anti racism and anti fascism while red means neonazism?
@@sturm9087 I'm months late to a question asked of a 2 year old comment, but I did some quick research on this. What it all seems to point to as an origin is England in the 80's. It started with reggae and ska, which started to have anti-racism messages more prominently in their music. This created a schism of skinheads where the racist ones broke off and listened exclusively to something else. These skinheads also decided to wear white laces to symbolize white power. The remaining skinheads, who still listened to the ska and reggae, got pissed that they were getting lumped in with the racists and started wearing yellow laces to say "hey! I'm not with them and I don't support them!"
This subculture war then spread to the USA and other places, with the shoelace colours being adopted with them.

3. The reason Dean hated dears so much saying “one down, another 100k to go” he hates the deer so much because people used to call black people “buck” and buck is another word for a deer.
4. When everyone is arriving to the party, walter greets some of the guests. He greets them because they are the grandpas old friends.
