He has the friend group we all need

What else hasn’t changed us the voice of the opinionated telling you “you can’t make a gay character!!” Sure it’s for different reasons now but man they’re still there.
While the hypermasculine aspects of Batman are absolutely present and often a problem, I find that a lot of the most compelling Batman stories are ones that accurately explore how Batman is harmed by his over-reliance on that masculinity. The violence, the lack of emotion, the need to do everything himself, these are inherently tragic character flaws when written well. The very best Batman stories are ones where we see Batman actively struggle with these, much to the worry of his father-figure, Alfred.
There was one episode of Batman The Animated Series where Batman and Robin stumbled on an alias that refers to the man who killed Robin's parents (that Robin didn't know about) Instead of expressing himself, Batman refused to let Robin in on what what going on, shutting down any questions and insisted on dealing with this by himself He wound up with an injured leg and might have died if it wasn't for Robin's stubbornness. Very much a proof of what you said.
@@isapu1948 i actually watched that series not too long ago, and to an extent i agree but that episode didn't really address the problems in any meaningful way. I always loved to think Joker and Harley were those gay pals that every straight person thought were dating but actually have their own lovers; Harley most likely being Ivy, and Joker's being Batman/Bruce.
I’d take that over an extremely abusive relationship depiction any day. I like how most media is now acknowledging how bad the Joker/Harley relationship is, but man, I love this spin on their relationship and want more of it.
But they can only meet when Bruce is dressed as Batman, so during the day, Bruce is constantly having to look over his shoulder in case he has to pull a Peter Parker and just yeet out the window in his bat man suit
I don't ship Joker and Batman mostly because I don't ship arch-enemies, it would be like shipping Captain America and Red Skull or Mr Fantastic and Dr Doom, plus it sounds like a toxic relationship just waiting to happen
Joker at the end of lego batman gives me “i confessed my feelings and my queerness to my straight crush and he still treats me nice and it’s weird because i’m used to be seen as a monster and predator but i’m just a normal human allowed to feel and that is new for me” vibes, idk why just me?

I remember watching this in theaters, and midway through the movie my mom leaned over to me and said "I'm starting to see why people on Facebook were saying this is gay." 10/10 best Batman movie ever.
“This queer threat isn’t just directed at Batman, but at the readers who fear that one day Batman won’t beat the Joker’s ass the way they want him to.” If you would excuse me I need to take a ten year nap to recover from how amazing that quote is ☺️
Wait! I didn't notice that was innuendo until you pointed that out -- my asexual self is so bad at spotting subtext. Thank you for revealing it in all its punderful majesty.
Always thought Batman works even better when he's gay, especially since animated Batman's long-running VA was gay, and spoke often on how he related so much to the Caped Crusader's double life while growing up. The idea of Bruce actively PRETENDING to be a playboy while being quietly miserable is something some stories toy with, and that only gets all the more compelling if he's also in the closet.
"By the time the 50s rolled around, parents had started to grow weary of comic books the same way the parents of today are weary of video games. People were concerned that comics caused junevile delinquency." History has a funny way of repeating itself, doesn't it?
There are ancient records dating to back to Babylonian times showing that people were complaining that the new concept of the written word would foster laziness among children.
Also the fact he acts like a man child is true for batman as well. Batman lost his parents as a child and hes stuck there. He ignores his feelings by dressing up as a bat and beating up homeless crazy people. Batman puts up a front to look cool but hes incapable of handling his emotions and reacts how he does. He is a manchild and this movie was just very blatant about it
I've never realized it until now, but despite the light tone of the movie, it does acknowledge Batman's trauma over losing his parents. We all know it's a core part of his backstory, but to my knowledge, it's never really been looked into quite like this Batman is afraid of having a new family because he doesn't want to lose them like he did his parents. It weighs heavily on him, and he doesn't want to go through that pain again, especially if he thinks he can prevent it
Let's not forget Joaquin Phoenix's joker also had a bit of gayness spice. In a interview he said the joker had a lil bit of Frank-n-Furter from the Rocky Horror Picture Show ...

I always loved how this movie crammed as many obscure Batman villains as possible, especially since it meant they would make toys of those neglected characters.
The way I like joker being a bit more queer than Batman, is that he is in love with the idea of Batman not Bruce Wayne, i always digged that. It’s almost certain that it wouldn’t work out not because Batman is too straight, but he isn’t just Batman. This relationship goes beyond their orientation but their identity as well. I loved the idea of joker never existing because Batman didn’t. They are forever going to be made for each other but will never be together. In that sense, it is forbidden love and that’s something I like in romance sometimes.
This is like the 80th comment I've read on this page that makes absolutely no mention whatsoever that the reason Batman doesn't like the Joker is that the Joker murders innocent people.
from time to time I think this movie was a fever dream because it was so unapologetically gay I could not believe it was real. I love it so much, bless this version of the joker in particular

Fun fact, along with homphobia, the CCA also was very much mysoginistic. Along with forcing female writers out, eventually leading into the oversexualazation of many fictional women, it caused several comic writers to poke fun at the thing. For instance, Power Girls boobwindow grew wider specificallt to push the boundaries. She hulk actually put a direct joke about this, labeling her underwear as 'protected by the comics code authority'.
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 I mean yegua but it’s relevant. Never said it was. Actually what was meant to be a feminist costume was ms marvel! Her overt sexuality and revealing costume was meant as a direct jab at the sexist attitude of the CCA

I really liked Telltale's Batman because Joker is your buddy. He's like an adorable puppy who always wants to impress, but doesn't quite understand how and gets upset when he can't live up to Batman's strict and confusing morals. The entire time you feel sympathetic to him and he genuinely feels like your friend, you don't want to see him hurt or upset, and even when it all comes crumbling down and he turns into the villain, it still feels like he's your friend who's gone down the wrong path. They tried really hard to make it look straight: Bruce is with Selina and flirts with Harley, and Joker is crushing hard on Harley too, but it's very clear that Joker genuinely loves Bruce - whether romantically or platonically - and depending on how you play him Bruce feels the same but is just worse at showing it. Joker isn't some crazy obsessed psychopath, he's a guy with genuine mental health issues that make it hard for him to understand right and wrong, and he'll do anything to receive the approval and affection he's been lacking all his life. He tries to be good because it's what will make Bruce proud of him, but Batman has such high standards and is often so hypocritical that it's impossible to live up to them and it leaves John feeling like a disappointment. It's by far the deepest and most personal relationship between the two I've ever seen.
I want to play that game so much, it sounds so interesting! Also, reminds me of Jinx/Powder from Arcane. How she was constantly trying to impress and live up to what she thought other people's (Vander, Silco, Milo, and of course Vi) expectations were. She doesn't have any romantic feelings as at first she is just a child and then her emotional growth is stunted so she really just stays a child in an adult's body, but she _is_ presented as a misfit who doesn't fight like everyone else around her. For her, when everything comes tumbling down it's because she is trying to save her friends and prove that she CAN be useful, and we really want her to succeed in that...which of course makes it really sad when she is the reason it all goes wrong. After watching Arcane I heard a lot of people saying how they expected her to be a Harley Quinn but it turned out she was actually a Joker.
Wow! If i had a nickel for everytime Joker told Catwoman he loves Batman, i'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
I expected a simple explanation of how Batman and the Joker are “gay” in The Lego Batman Movie for the sake of minor social commentary, but instead I got an extremely intelligent and well-edited exploration of the queer coding that existed throughout the entirety of the Batman mythos, and how it came to define aspects of its characters. Great video, keep up the good work.
Yeah I clicked expecting to make an angry comment about how many Batman villains have long been queer coded, including a comic where Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy were married
Never saw Queercoding as something so positive. And it's cool that Lego Batman acknoledges this, even if unintentional, gay conotation exists since the very origins of Batman, so i just feel like there's something very sweet in a movie almost entirely based around that. Edit: btw, you completely got my subscription after your divine interpretation of Werthan's text. Love it.
I honestly love how Sauron was all dark and said "I'd like to make the streets run red with batman's blood" and Joker was all like "nah man too far" and Sauron IMMEDIATELY said "oh okay moving on to lava" he just. Saw how apparently there's a line to where Joker will go into hurting this dude and Sauron was just cool with it. You go, man. And also during the "I hate you Joker" scene at the end of the movie, I frigging was so happy for Joker because he looked so elated and blissful like my dude needed that I could tell. I really liked Joker and Batman’s relationship in the Telltale games. It made their relationship more personal than most depictions, as they were actually friends (and aspects of it could be interpreted as romantic) before Joker eventually turns to crime. Also, I’m kind of surprised that people didn’t notice that their relationship in this movie is pretty gay (I don’t mean this in a negative way). It follows the general role of a general romance arc but it’s their “hatred” for one another rather than love.
I feel no straight person could sincerely imagine that it's possible to convert someone to being gay. It just feels like you'd have to be in a distinctly Fitzgeraldian situation (you know where he basically said all dudes wanna sleep with other dudes and you just have to not do it) in order to convince yourself that reading a story about two men living together will cause you to fantasize about doing the same. This is hysterical.
To me it's weird when people wanna argue the Joker is straight. Like seriously? You can give him girlfriends I'm still gonna head cannon him bi and his number 1 always gonna be Batman.
I have a hard time of thinking of Joker as a sexual being, but I certainly can acknowledge that his obsession with Bats is borderline romantic. I say borderline because Joker being a psychopath I don't think he can form any real connection to anyone, but the closest he has to an emotional connection to anyone is to Batman.
@@fluidthought42 i think it really depends on the media and the author. In a way, all jokers and Batmans are different. Althought there is a canon around the character, it is loose enough so that they can mess around with the dynamics, motivations and etc.

I'm just glad that Joker isn't cutting his own face off and taping it back to his head. Ever since The Dark Knight Returns, it seems like Batman writers have been trying to one-up themselves in terms of darkness and misery. The Killing Joke is also guilty for getting this ball rolling. And the darkness peaked with Batman v. Superman, where no one cracks a smile. I'm glad Lego Batman exists, but for completely different reasons.
I get what you mean. I really like dark stories but they’re even better with humour. It comes off a bit cheesy if something is 100% serious all the time. Real life isn’t like that.
There are three different versions of the joker in Batman history: the golden age (criminal mastermind) the silver age (prankster aka this movies version) and the mordern age ( the psychopath edgy one)
Lmao, the Joker and Batman being gay is the single best plot element in the LEGO series. It really is unmissable unless you’re in denial. The fact that it managed to be both hilarious and heartfelt was really neat. Good movie, but you don’t need me to tell you that.

Dude. You know how it's sort of become a joke at this point that The Straights TM are completely blind to queercoding in media? I kid you not, I've had to explain to MULTIPLE PEOPLE that this movie was very, very, VERY gay. And the look of surprise on their face and "what? No. I don't remember it like that. You're reading too much into it." IT'S LITERALLY. WHAT THE MOVIE. IS ABOUT. Fantastic review! I didn't know about the history of the comic books so that retroactively made my love for this movie even stronger.
Its even more fascinating that they see romance so quickly when they just see a boy and a girl next to each other but not when the Joker is literally heart broken because Batman doesnt likes him like the Joker loves Batman.
Considering how much in comics the relationship between the Joker and Batman is described, the whole running joke of the lego version being a romantic allegory just makes so much sense. Really great considering how the film is a parody. Need to watch it one day...
What does this movie have to do with Zack Snyder? secondly Batman vs Superman makes it somewhat clear what Batman is doing is wrong ranging from police and civilians fearing him to Alfred scolding him on his behaviour. The Ultimate edition does this even more by having Clark talk to a civilian. Basically point is that Zack understands the character he just choose to do something new with them Thirdly Just let people enjoy their films. If you don't like Zack's stuff that is cool! just don't go round trying to ruin it for those that do enjoy it
I know it’s been over a year since this video came out, but I wanted to say that this has become a bit of a comfort video for me. I’m not sure why, but I keep coming back to it. Personally, idk if I'd call it "subversive queercoding" since it was all up in your face about the gay jokes.. but reading the comments now I guess some Straights just didn't??? Notice it??? THEY WERE SO LOUD THO LMAO
At the end of the video op states that the queercoding in TLBM is subversive for subverting the Batman macho man mythos, not because the movie on its own is subversive
@Ty The Great you clearly didnt watch the video so I'm not gonna argue with you, but a whole movie based on two character's relationship isn't "just a gay joke".
I think my favorite Joker-Harley dynamic was this one fan work I read where Joker and Harley were both bisexual disasters who started out with a romantic fling but quickly became besties instead. Then the two of them commiserate over their love lives while also being literal partners-in-crime and running their own gang together. It was really cool because it framed them as equals and there was no abuse from either of them. Also, in the story, Ivy was their weed dealer and that eventually led to her and Harley dating, and then the two of them helped Joker get Batman's attention. It was really fun!

There are three different versions of the joker in Batman history: the golden age (criminal mastermind) the silver age (prankster aka this movies version) and the mordern age ( the psychopath edgy one)
Why does “seduction of the innocent” sound like the title of a pron novel-
PRAWN movie XDDDD
It really does wow-
Honestly sounds like a corruption/mind-break hentai to me. Could even include unwilling hypnosis.
Lmao, the Joker and Batman being gay is the single best plot element in the LEGO series. It really is unmissable unless you’re in denial. The fact that it managed to be both hilarious and heartfelt was really neat. Good movie, but you don’t need me to tell you that.
I doubt Lego Batman is gay. Remember the parts where he was simping for Barbara Gordon?
@@lordrathut Well, he has two personae: Heterosexual at daytime, homosexual at nighttime. Catch him at dusk or dawn, he might be bi or pan, changing his costumes.
they’re not literally gay its humor
@@him1517 To me, it was both, humourous and gay. I had quite a gay time with this film.
@@him1517 You sound like the type of person who would say something like "I kissed my homie on the lips, but it's okay why we said No Homo"
"The readers who fear batman won't beat the jokers ass in the way they want him too" HAD ME WHEEZING-
You're reading too much into it."
IT'S LITERALLY. WHAT THE MOVIE. IS ABOUT.
Fantastic review! I didn't know about the history of the comic books so that retroactively made my love for this movie even stronger.
I don't know how people miss that (though tbh it felt so natural that joker has a crush on batman it didn't register as gay for me somehow)
Its even more fascinating that they see romance so quickly when they just see a boy and a girl next to each other but not when the Joker is literally heart broken because Batman doesnt likes him like the Joker loves Batman.
They be spittin facts.

THANK YOU TENNEEEEELLE!
The idea of batman making kids gay was extremely hilarious to me. Straight people crack me up.

I didn’t think it was exactly subtle I thought this was just a well-known thing
I legit keep reading the title as “submissive”. I need sleep
Considering how much in comics the relationship between the Joker and Batman is described, the whole running joke of the lego version being a romantic allegory just makes so much sense. Really great considering how the film is a parody. Need to watch it one day...

I’ve spent years trying to explain to Zach Snyder fanboys why this movie understands Batman better than any other
fighting the good fight
@@burtmacklinfbi5988 it’s a struggle, but it’s worth
Man, Snyder is just such a terrible filmmaker when he has to do anything other than mindless edgelord spectacle.
@@FelisImpurrator not terrible, but not great. He is a fantastic cinematographer
What does this movie have to do with Zack Snyder?
secondly
Batman vs Superman makes it somewhat clear what Batman is doing is wrong ranging from police and civilians fearing him to Alfred scolding him on his behaviour. The Ultimate edition does this even more by having Clark talk to a civilian.
Basically point is that Zack understands the character he just choose to do something new with them
Thirdly
Just let people enjoy their films. If you don't like Zack's stuff that is cool! just don't go round trying to ruin it for those that do enjoy it

I know it’s been over a year since this video came out, but I wanted to say that this has become a bit of a comfort video for me. I’m not sure why, but I keep coming back to it. I recently discovered some of my friends have never seen this movie but I am determined to fix that soon! The world needs more gay Lego
This movie has the perfect definition of a Kismesis relationship, basically it is hating each other and through rivalries, you make each other better, plus it's an engaging movie.

Personally, idk if I'd call it "subversive queercoding" since it was all up in your face about the gay jokes.. but reading the comments now I guess some Straights just didn't??? Notice it??? THEY WERE SO LOUD THO LMAO
It's not subversive because it's hard to notice, it's subversive because instead of demonizing him it makes him more sympathetic to the viewers
At the end of the video op states that the queercoding in TLBM is subversive for subverting the Batman macho man mythos, not because the movie on its own is subversive
You’re mixing up subversive and subtle I think

It was really fun!
batman if it was epic
O my gosh whats it called?
