She's 32 now which is how old John Mayer was at the time so she's reflecting on how truly young she was in comparison
and the song is track 19, the age she was when they dated !
I'm literally 27 and could never imagine dating anyone younger than like... 23 maybe. He's SUCH a weirdo for that
The Great War is her describing the conflict, anxiety, and overall difficulty of navigating a new romantic relationship that feels very different to her than her previous relationships. When you've been in multiple toxic relationships in a row, finally getting into a much more mature, healthy relationship is a big adjustment (in a good way), learning how to let go of your past trauma and to let your walls come down and trust that your new partner isn't going to manipulate you the way past people did. Anxiety is a b*tch.
I love your energy!!!!!! Thank you for this reaction video!
Thank you for another wonderful reaction, Dan. I always enjoy your musical & lyrical interpretations.
Bigger than the whole sky really sounds like a miscarriage song to me. It is so incredibly sad and so incredibly well written
100%, this reading makes the song so heartbreaking :( And then re-listening to Hoax and especially the second verse, it could be referencing a miscarriage as well as the Reputation/stolen Masters challenges, and it just has that much more poignancy
I know my friend told me about this theory and I can't unhear it! It's so so beautiful if that's the case wow
I derived the same meaning from the song as Luscent; I had to walk away from someone I loved (it just wasn’t meant to be) and this song wrecks me. Like any great song, people can interpret it in different ways. The fact that people who have miscarried associate this song with their loss is a testament to how great the songwriting is here.
Really love your content.. the way to delve into the deepest meanings of things really trying to understand or relate to every part of the song... thank you!
I appreciate that! Thank you
Loved this! The Great War is so beautiful and gives me chills! And the lyrics seem like they belong on evermore. It has that foresty, period piece vibe.
Glitch is about Joe. 2190 days is 6 years (and stitch being the invisible string from folklore, not being from her part of town actually being a different country and simpler lifestyle). She didn't realise it was going to be a long term relationship to start with and assumed she'd go back to her old habits of dating guys who treated her badly as that's what she had thought was romance. The glitch was breaking that pattern.
Would’ve could’ve should’ve made me think of 29 by Demi, and I think it’s time for celebrities to talk about those really toxic relationships with men so much older than them, that manipulate them and then throw them away, especially for John Mayer who literally trash talked about Taylor to the press back then
Me toooooo!
100% agree! Reminds me of Your Age by Rina Sawayama as well
He was so insecure and immature to go around shit on a 19 yo that he chose to date 😭
The great war is Midnight's Afterglow
She acknowledges that she's the problem, she has all these trauma from previous relationships that she is projecting onto Joe. I assume they had a big fight because of this, she said she almost lost him but their love overcame the great war.
I loved would've could've should've a lot! It should've been in the main album! But the fact that she put it at number 19 track is clearly a sign of a mastermind! Coz "I never would've danced with the devil at nineteen" 😫😭 I love her songwriting so much! John Mayer is such a douchebags for using up so many girls and sucking them dry! Loved her part "give me back my girlhood, it was mine firstttt" like the grudge, pain & regret is so obvious in that one the most!! I just cant get enough of it! ❤
tbh, would've could've should've would've not matched the vibe of Midnights like the other songs on it. Paris or Glitch would've worked well the sound imo (even though they sound really different) Paris and Glitch could've and should've been in the original version, they would've been such a hit!
Glitch is so different from the things she have done, and it hits! it hits different.
Thank you for these reaction videos! For me, Dear Reader is her giving us advice about things she's learned, and then telling us not to listen to anything she says, because she's carrying her fourth drink, she's going home to an empty house, no real friends, losing to herself at solitaire. But she knows that even though she's telling us that we should find another guiding light, and though she may not want the pressure of being a role model, her light shines so bright that we will all continue to look up to her.
She is describing herself laying on her side crying. The tears are running from her eyes into her ears!❤
on her back* :)
@@DoubleBlack2.0 either one would work
@@ryliegarcia. Not to be nit-picky, but it really wouldn’t. lol
Think about it. When you’re lying on your side, that bottom ear is blocked by the pillow or whatever surface you’re lying on. 🤷🏻♀️
The Great War is one of my top favs, i love all the metaphors so much
also a lot of people online have been relating Bigger Than The Whole Sky to miscarriages, and even though I definitely don't want to speculate that its about that or ever feed into pregnancy rumors, it's also a really nice interpretation for people who have actually been through that.
Kinda late to the party. But loved your reaction, the Glitch one specially... I've been catching up with your journey with TS, amazing!
Super great reaction.
OMG YESS i agree that Dear Reader gives The 1975 vibes with the production!! I havent seen anyone else say it lol thank youuu
1914 the beginning of the Great War. The Great War is track 14. Coincidence? I think not
God your reactions are ao good!
Glitch is about her and Joe meeting and getting together. 2190 days is 6 years, how long she's been with him. when she says she goes back to dudes, that's only half the line. dudes who give nothing, not dudes in general. I'm bi and I'm all for representation, but this one is very much about Joe. She was coming out of a bad relationship and a rebound and found herself falling in love with Joe. Just like Labyrinth!
Omg your interpretation of Glitch is so perfect. As a bi guy myself i totally went through that exact feeling erasing my sexuality bc i could essentially get away with it. But that lie eventually breaks.
Yeah I’m a bilor too i think. I mean I don’t think there’s evidence but there are certainly songs that make sooo much more sense if interpreted as queer.
If All Too Well had a sister it would be Wouldve Couldve Shoudlve.
Yeah, and Dear John and The Woment I Knew are like the big bros)
To me, Dear Reader was like those old advice columns in newspapers and magazines. Readers would write in with their life questions, often about love and relationships, and they'd select a few to answer in the next edition. Here Taylor seems to me to be saying "don't look to me for relationship advice, life advice, advice in general. find someone more qualified. I know I shine bright but i'm just another flawed human who doesn't have all the answers" and ngl i like it a lot
Nice reaction! 💙💙Personally I think The Great War is about Taylor and Joe trying to find peace in their relationship because of all the bad things Taylor has been through, she didn't trust anybody anymore and she was afraid of love but in the end (you can see this starting from the bridge of the song) she understands that Joe is different, he is the right one "in honor and truth" and so they survive "the Great War". This song also recalls some parts of Afterglow lyrics "It's all me in my head, I'm the one who burned us down. But it's not what I meant, I'm sorry that I hurt you... I don't wanna lose this with you..".
Bigger Than The Whole Sky I think it's about a version of herself that is gone forever, what Taylor could have been if someone (maybe John Meyer) didn't hurt her like he did. In Would've Could've Should've she sings "Give me back my girlhood it was mine first" and so maybe Bigger Than The Whole Sky is about this girlhood that she has lost. Moreover in this song she also sings "what could've would've what should've been you" It is not a coincidence. These two songs are definitely linked.
"Maybe it's the past screaming from a crypt" lyric in the great war with all the church/funeral religious lyrics on would've shoulve could've... Like the trauma from that relationship specifically has followed her and lead to her struggling to trust in healthy relationships
Love this reaction- if you like experimental electronic production maybe you'd be into The Japanese House- Good at Falling...
We, also do the poppies too on Memorial Day at the end of May.
You're so gorgeous!!🙂🙂 The way you talk, your smile, your reactions... so beautiful 😇😇
The way you walk, way you talk, way you say my name :D
🙈🙈
High infidelity = illicit affairs
She tells the story of her being with calvin when she meets either tom or joe. She tells how she feels unloved during their relationship (referenced as well in bejeweled).
Thank you for noticing the connotations in Bejeweled! I've not heard anyone say this, but Bejeweled gives me big Met Gala 2016 vibes, bored and stagnant in a relationship and going out dressed up for a big fancy night out
@@ZosiaDabrowski yes exactly! It's a big fu to Calvin for not giving her the love/affection she deserves.
27:04 you're always giving us what we want 😭
I got excited for a second that you were that timestamp guy
"let the only flashing lights be the tower at midnight" ❤️
Paris is Midnight's I know places + the lakes
slayage 💆♀️
For some reason, I am having a hard time understanding these songs than the original 13 songs. Don't get me wrong, I love them but after a week, I am still kinda confused about some since she said it is an autobiographical album. It helps to hear Dan's interpretation though!
💖💜💙
the glitch jumpscare 🤣
The Great War is giving a lot of hunger games vibes
Something that has been haunting me about Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve (my favorite of these 3 AM songs for sure!) is the phrasing around the 19. I can see how it would be interpreted as being entirely about what’s happening at 19, with John. But the ‘if you never-‘ then ‘I never would’ve’ format makes me think she’s actually talking about something BEFORE John that really primed her to be taken advantage of.
Taylor’s mom has said some of Taylor’s early music (I think she specifically named Love Story) is about an older guy from around when Taylor was 17 that they didn’t want her seeing. Martin Johnson of Boys Like Girls is one more quietly rumored Taylor ex that would’ve known her at the time through working together on music.
I don’t know. As someone who had bad experiences that led to me being revictimized as a later teen by older men because I didn’t have a proper sense of what an appropriate relationship or age gap was and I really wanted approval and to soothe insecurities, WCS feels to me like it’s on a similar topic. Like I said, it could be 100% John, but I do think the phrasing allows for the idea that she’s talking to someone BEFORE John that she feels led to the situation she ended up in with John (and even Jake, afterward! still a huge age gap).
Somewhat related note? In Dear Reader, she lists ‘when you aim at the devil, make sure you don’t miss’ as one of the lessons she’s learned as is trying to impart to us (or not 😅 since she maybe doesn’t think her advice is stellar). Coming right after WCS mentioning the devil, it’s interesting and left me thinking. WOW novel of a comment sorry, loved your thoughts and vibing with you while you listened as always!
23:54 omg!! I laughed so hard
yessssss glitch is so good and so gay//bi coded!!
to me the great war is a song about a fight her and a lover survived but they didn’t realize there would be another more “deadly” fight ahead that would ruin them. world war 1 was called “the great war” up until … world war 2. which was worse//bloodier/deadlier in comparison.
Glitch is about her and Joe. 2190 days is 6 years 😍
Wow! What a mastermind, isn't she?
@@unkownels okey will do 🤣
@@unkownels I think that that’s a reference to who she was dating before him.
Can you please add bookmarks for the time of each song next time
I believe The Great War describes a difficult moment in her relationship with Joe Alwyn. She even says 'Somewhere in the haze (referencing Lavender Haze, that is about being in love) got a sense i've been betrayed' and now they broke up and there was rumours he cheated, so... they didn't survive the great war 😞😞
