also around the time I think before they started dating John repeated said in interviews that when working with Taylor, she reminded him of a child, then he proceeded to date said person he thought reminded him of a child 🤮

I think it's important to acknowledge that John's behavior with Taylor is not an isolated incident (not just the relationship but the way he talked very badly about her to the media and discredited her song written). He has a history of treating women extremely badly. Look what he did with Jessica Simpson and she was an adult when it happened and it traumatized her. I can only imagine what something like that would do to a girl that's only 19 (He was 32 when they dated).

Also, as a CSA survivor living with ptsd for 2/3rds of her life, I want to carve the 'Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first' lyrics onto my body, it meant so so so much to me.

I think a huge theme of WCS that isn’t talked about enough is the shame that victims of abuse feel if they enjoyed it, or consented mentally even if they couldn’t REALLY consent because they don’t know the implications of what’s happening.
The thought that Taylor didn’t consider WCS for the original cut is crazy because is one of her best songs of all time, I’m just glad we got to hear it and it didn’t stay locked in a basement

This might be an unpopular opinion but for me, the 3am tracks feel superior than the actual tracks of Midnight album. Of course I adore lot of the main tracks but 3am tracks truly captures the 'what keeps you up at night' theme.

Would've, Could've, Should've is definitely my favorite song on all of Midnights, and one of my favs from her in general! I cannot understand why it wasn't included in the main album.

It’s definitely in the 3AM version specifically so that it could be track number 19, the age she was when 32 year old John Mayer pursued her. To add to that, Taylor is only just now that same age he was (32).
I honestly think it might be the same as all too well, that the song was so personal to her that she didn't want to put on the main album and kind of put her emotions and her trauma on display in this way. because with all too well she also didn't make the song into a single although she's said multiple times that it's one of her favourites and one of the best songs she's ever written. idk but i feel like it might be similar with would've could've should've

Another interpretation of "Bigger than the Whole Sky" that many people have discussed is it's connection to "Would've could've should've" because those same words are used in Bigger than the whole sky. It could be interpreted as missing who you were before the trauma. Missing your old self.
Yea, I also think that's the original interpretation of the song. Taylor doesn't fuck with coincidences, so that connection of the two songs must have been intentional.

My first reaction to bigger than the whole sky was definitely the miscarriage interpretation, I'm not obviously not gonna speculate on Taylor's own life, but the lyrics immediately hit that way for me. I've never experienced a miscarriage but my mother has with who was going to be my little sister when I was 12 years old, the line "I'm never gonna meet what could've been, would've been or should've been you" along with everything "going out to sea" instantly made me think of this, so I perfectly see how no matter Taylor's intention this song definitely hit really hard for people who've experienced miscarriages/are close to someone who has, she sings about this loss whichever it is really beautifully and the song's emotion reached me for sure.

I feel like midnight is the worst album you could react to in Taylor's discography if you can want a build up at the end. Taylor always build up and have a masterpieces of a bridges in most of the album but Midnight is the one with only few songs with great bridges and build-up.

@@withcindy to me, the similarity comes from the heavy use of imagery and storytelling. Similar to champagne problems on evermore or August/Betty/cardigan on folklore.
It's a story told throughout the entirety of the song and the bridge being where the story changes and the nuances of wording changes in the chorus after the bridge.
But also I've thought about this way too much cause it's one of my favorite songs off the album.

And I don’t want to know badly enough to look up the lyrics. Overall I’m just really impressed you had a solid interpretation of each song after one listen?! Her voice was so buried under effects this album, that I still have no idea what she’s saying on some of these songs.

In would’ve could’ve should’ve i love the line “If clarity’s in death then why won’t this die.” Because you expect at the time you’ll grow past the hurt in a relationship, but sometimes you don’t and whenever you look back you feel sad and mad and want to throw hands at someone you know doesn’t give a sh*t because they hurt people to feel alive.
