This is why Reputation is still one of my faves even though a lot of people would deem it as her worst work; they only see it as Taylor playing the victim and just being edgy and all that. You're right that this album is very much misunderstood. But the truth is this album is special, it's powerful in a way that you relate to it when you go through some very hard times and you learn to stand up for yourself and find peace with someone you love.
Thr tracklist is intentionally put in order. It starts off with such heavy instrumentals but ends on such peaceful and tranquil note, and that's beautiful. It's like finally taking a breath after all that you've been through.

I know you will cry when you hear New Year's Day. It feels like the song after anger. It was intimate, real and honest. I love it!
I love REP. It’s about falling in love with Joe. Rep is the story of them meeting and starting to date and fall in love. All songs are about her love of Joe except Lwymmd and tiwwchnt, which is about K&Kz. Part of I did something bad is about K&K, but the rest is about leaving another for Joe, and that same relationship (a rebound) is told in Getaway Car. All other songs are 100% about Joe.
A theme of this album of course is her relationship with Joe but he must like her for her, not per fame and fortune. This is repeated over and over and over on this album. It’s the worst time of her life, and she is not sure what to do, she is scared and depressed. She was friends with Joe first and she talks about it on Lover, I think Paper Rings, when she doesn’t like surprises except when they went from friends to this. It’s 100% about Joe.
Actually, I think the rebound on Getaway Car was with Tom Hiddleston, but other than that, I agree (and IDSB is also about the media/Kanye/her exes)
@@lindseysquire8417 yes definitely Getaway Car is about Tom, I just didn't want to call him out about him being a rebound.... I think the second half of IDSB is about him too, but that's just my opinion.
Funny that you mention folklore and evermore all the time. Keep in mind she was coming off of her peak “acclaim” basically with 1989, followed by the whole world turning on her and her disappearing for a year. So this hard sound and big production actually made perfect sense. There is this dark undercurrent throughout the album even in the softer and more romantic songs.
Also, Delicate, CIWYW, NYD, KOMH, DWOHT(my personal fave) are all about Joe. But this was back when they were just starting and wanted to keep everything completely a secret, bc she was si insecure about it lasting bc of how the media usually fucks it up like it did w/Harry styles.
I've watched a few vids recently of interviews and things around that time and before and like their treatment of her was just awful I can understand her wanting to keep it secret

Dancing with our hands tied is my fave in this album.This song is relevant after the paparazzies told her that she was overweight while Taylor was leaving the gym. And She writes this song crying when she goes home.

Rep is so powerful, I've always loved rep because it starts off all about her reputation and then as the album goes on it's like she lets you see inside and how actually she is really in love (and yeah it is about the beginning with Joe). We actually had the same reaction to King of my Heart. It's feels good to know that Taylor has found what she was looking for. When this album dropped, everything was still a mess, so to hear from Taylor herself that she's found love, King of my Heart was an instant fave

Getaway Car - i like to think it was an apology song to Tom Hiddleston. At the met gala 2014, she was still in a relationship with Calvin, but they were already on a bad term and Calvin wasn't at the party. Yes she saw Joe for the first time there as well but as mentioned in Gorgeous, she was only checking him out and nothing else. She got drunk, and went to dance with Tom. That's why "think about the place where you first met me" because she was drunk, and possibly had the intention to use him to leave Calvin when she went to dance with him. Tom is a textbook gentleman so i think it's easy for Taylor to fall for him, but then again she must've felt bad about the whole relationship.
Dancing With Our Hands Tied - i hate to say this but i really don't think Taylor and Karlie were ever a thing. Imo this song is about Taylor's fear of having her new relationship interfered by the media like it did with Harry Styles. Taylor and Harry's relationship was terribly ruined by the massive media attention. So with Joe, Taylor tried to limit and privatize their relationship as much as possible.

ngl it's highkey hilarious to imagine karlie with a buzzcut lmaoo but dress was definitely joe, you can search photos of him at the met gala in 2016 and he has the ugliest buzzcut in the land. its so funny, they both had such tragic hairstyles when they met.
the thing about reputation is that it's all about meeting and falling in love with joe (except getaway car) in the middle of her reputation falling down, but it's not in chronological order. she meets him in dress, she falls in love in delicate, and so on.
That makes sense actually cos there were a bunch of moments where I was convinced it was the first song about Joe hahah

“This is why we can’t have nice things” kinda sounds like a mom scolding or chastising their kid. There’s shade to several people but mostly Kim/Kanye for the leaked phone call. I agree with you on the way it comes across but I totally understand why she wrote it and why she added it to the album. She hadn’t really referenced the “mind twisting and the infamous phone call” and with the song she’s on record saying this is my truth and now we know she was telling the truth all along.

I just love how he says Kanye and slays dancing and doesnt care what anyone thinks. Also Inez or James forgot which one Ryan Reynolds (taylor's friend's daughter) is the voice at the beginning Gorgeous. Reputation just boosts attitude and confidence and good vibes I feel. It's an album of great like car radio in summer windows down kinda vibes.

I don’t think Dress is about KK, it’s about Joe. They were friends with benefits, no commitment (cruel summer) and unexpectedly it went from friends to lovers, even though she was attracted to him, they were just friends (Paper Rings). She also writes about love and how real love is with the one who is your best friend (you are in love). They also had to keep this a secret at the beginning. In fact no one knew about them for almost a year (cruel summer, delicate, Dress). So I think Dress is still about to Joe and it has an underrated bridge where she says she woke up just in time, she was about to lose him, she realized what she had. Dress is under-rated. But is not about KK, it’s about her and Joe starting out as friends and falling in love in secret. .
New Years Day. Great closer. REP is about falling in love, and the closing track she IS in love. It ends with her completely in love. My favorite part of NYDay is don’t read the last page, but then she tells him what happens anyway. That she stays, no matter what, good times and bad, looking into the future. Don’t read the last page, but I’m still here. I love that. And the evermore call back!
Now that you’ve listened to all this. Go back to evermore. Listen to along Story Short which tells the story of REP, then listen to evermore which tells more about REP. Then listen to Call it What You Want on REP. This is the trilogy. Now, this summer, listen to her new song Renegade and compare it to Call it What you Want. It’s the same song, same story about REP, but told from Joe’s point of view.

Btw! You interpreted Dancing With Our Hands Tied absolutely right. Taylor once said that one day when paparazzi found her and Joe (in the time span when she was gone off the internet and the media) she was so devastated and heartbroken because she felt like their relationship could never work with her fame and her reputation. So she actually wanted to break up with Joe cause she was so heartbroken and didn't see any hope for them. But Joe refused and did hold on to them, and that was how Dancing With Our Hands Tied was created. I'm pretty sure in some interview she said she cried so hard while writing this!💔
