@@geegeezlouis86 I think it's that the way she expresses herself is so blatantly relatable but in a way we don't tend to share with the world because we are taught that we should be embarrassed about certain things or told certain things are uncool and yet behind closed doors we are still like that. She let's out what we are told to keep relatively private and to a lot of us it is comforting and helps make us more comfortable about ourselves. At least that's the vibe I get, the things people call cringe are always things I wouldn't be brave enough to show myself doing.

This is the era that turned me into a Swiftie. I had heard her radio tracks from previous albums, but never actively listened to her music. If I'm being honest the good girl next door vibe didn't really do it for me, and while I didn't dislike her I never bought any of her music. Then she entered her f*ck off era when the LWYMMD music video dropped and I started paying attention. Now I own her entire discography and don't go a day without listening to her, and I have a huge respect for everything she has accomplished and how she continues to reinvent herself.

He had not heard the song as it wasn’t released yet. Right before she performed he told this beautiful story of how him and his mother would squeeze their hands three times to say I love you. I am not a religious person at all but watching her perform “Don’t Blame Me” live was a full on religious experience! Also on the set list for the Eras Tour she takes you right from “tolerate it” straight into “…Ready For It?”. She wants you to get that whiplash. Taylor on shuffle is my favorite way to entertain myself during work. I work on the phone all day so I’ll have my headset on one ear and Taylor in the other and I’m trying to not react when it goes from “Never Grow Up” to “Dress” to “Soon You’ll Get Better” to “Vigilante Shit” while talking to a customer about their credit application.

For me, Reputation is great to listen to...but it's better taken in visually. Music videos, the Rep Tour, her smaller acoustic sets. She never did press for the album, so she wouldn't have to explain any of it.
Also, there's 2 albums in one...she really gives you the drama you went to the album for in the first half, then shows you the side of herself she finds more important in the second half.

reputation mostly serves as a bait and switch. It's the story about how she fell in love with someone, while her reputation was crumbeling around her. Long ass comment incoming :)
They may seem like ordinary love songs, but they all touch on sides of her reputation.
-...ready for it: she is preparing her lover for the media attention they will receive. She also talks briefly about the reputation of both her and her lover
-End Game: touches upon the 'serial dater' comments, how she keeps going for new men and then causes drama. She does not want to be known like that to her lover
-I Did Something Bad: she embraces the persona the media gave her (victim player, serial dater, narcissist,...)
-Don't Blame Me: also touching on the serial dater trope
-Delicate: this is what I consider the heart of the album. This is the real Taylor being afraid to start this new relationship because her reputation is ruined. She keeps asking herself if it's safe to try it. A really vulnerable song imo.
-LWYMMD: this one is very obvious and is mostly addressed to Kanye and Kim
-So It Goes: may seem like a traditional love song, but I read something really interesting about this song:
"The line “so it goes” originates from the novel Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, written in 1969. He says the line several times in the novel whenever a death occurs, as a narrative transition to another subject. This could be symbolic to Swift’s reputation album as a whole, since she has publicly said the “old Taylor” is dead. This album is her transition into the “new” Taylor - so it goes."
The song to me talks about how she is able to block out the media hate because of her lover
-Gorgeous: the song kinda mocks the idea of her love songs just being ordinary love songs and not having any depth. Taylor said that this song is about the fact that you will act stupid around a person you really like.
*There may be spoilers for this part of the comment*
-Getaway Car: is a follow-up to Gorgeous. She likens her rebound relationship with Tom Hiddleston to a “getaway car” ride used to get away from a crime scene, or her failed relationship with Calvin Harris.
-King of My Heart: a love song, however, it references multiple songs within this album. Her castles may have crumbled, but she found a new and better kingdom, one that's personal and intimate.
-Dancing With Our Hands Tied: Taylor explained this song to her fans:
Back in LA […] she went to the gym only to be caught by paparazzi on her way out. The paps shouted all kinds of things at her including comments about her weight - remember this was the first time she had been properly seen in months and nobody knew she was in a relationship. She described being really overwhelmed by the experience but that her thought process was less about herself and more about how she could possibly have a normal relationship when this was her life. Taylor actually said that after the incident she went straight to the recording studio, cried, and wrote this song.
-Dress: a steamy love song, that references how she and her lover met in the bridge
-TIWWCHNT: a lighthearted and comical where she directly speaks to the media, and everyone who did her wrong.
During the Secret Sessions held before the release of reputation, Taylor told fans that this song drew on her experiences with fame and the media. She stated that she’d throw extravagant parties and invite her friends on stage with her during the 1989 tour as a nice gesture, to share her success with those around her. However, the media eventually turned that against her, questioning and criticizing her need for a “squad” which led her to essentially move out of the public eye completely and go on a sabbatical for the next year.
-Call It What You Want: this song reflects her emotional state later on.
"This last part of the album feels like settling into where I am now. So it started with where I was when I started making the album, and ends with kind of my emotional state now. And this song, I think, really reflects that probably the best on the album, and it’s called “Call It What You Want.”
-New Years Day: a metaphor to discuss holding on to people and memories from both good and bad times. Taylor recognizes that when the ‘parties’ in her life are over and the ‘new year’ begins, such memories are all she will have left to hold on to and learn from. She relates a lasting love to someone who shares a midnight kiss with you on New Year’s, but who still stays with you the next morning for the aftermath of the party and begins the new year together with you.
So this is a long comment, but this is how every song on reputation is connected :)

Not in this video, but I think the context for Getaway Car is nice to know.
Getaway Car is about the Calvin Harris -> Tom Hiddleston -> Joe Alwyn pipeline.
First verse through second verse are about her leaving Calvin for Tom (Tom was driving the getaway car), but the ending of the song is how she ended up leaving Tom for Joe because of the same reason. The "getaway car" is a metaphor for a rebound relationship, and while Tom wanted a future with Taylor, she didn't want that with him.

  • @daniellaperez3846
    @daniellaperez3846 Рік тому +8

Also this album was made pretty soon after she met Joe Alwyn (her 6 yr long relationship) so yes at face value this album is about her reputation after all of the drama, but really it's about how her man helped her through a really dark time in her life. The 2018 AMAs performance of "I Did Something Bad" is what put me over the edge. Honestly, the album pales in comparison to the live versions. For more background, reputation is lowercase in the title cause it's more of a concept running throughout the album as opposed to it being what the whole album is about. Even the love songs reference her reputation in some way, but not all the songs are solely about it! I also kind of described it as the bigger, production heavy songs being her louder, "reputation" self. And the ones that are softer being the real Taylor behind the big reputation she holds. At the time, while her reputation was falling apart around her, she was falling in love in secret behind the scenes. I do see this album not being for everyone or a mixed bag in terms of the songs, but I really love this album and how different it was and how iconic it was for her to come back this way after not seeing her for a year! Some of my favorites are in the second half of the album so I'm excited for you to get to it! Thank you for the reaction.☺

reputation, on the surface, seems like an album about revenge. The lead single (Look What You Made Me Do) was very divisive because it was literally just Taylor going "You're an asshole and Karma's gonna get you," which was a very different image of her than the one people were familiar with. And a lot of the songs on the album also embody that persona. Taylor, since around 2012, was called a "serial dater" simply for dating a couple people. She was accused of always playing the victim because she wrote about heartbreak (and that was reinforced after the Kimye drama because people thought she was lying about Kanye and just wanted people to feel bad for her). When the Kimye drama happened, Kim called her a snake, and #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty was the number 1 trend on Twitter worldwide. Everyone was calling her a snake and a conniving manipulator. She disappeared from the public eye and came back a year later with reputation, an album that embraces that image of hers that the media had created. She's a snake (LWYMMD), she's a serial dater who manipulates men (I Did Something Bad, Don't Blame Me), she's just all around a "bad person." But the deeper you dig into the album, the more you realize it's actually a love story. It's her finding love and safety amidst the chaos that was her life and reputation (pun intended). That is also represented in the album cover, where one side is covered in words and looks like a page from a newspaper, which represents all the things the media has said about her. Her face is covered, because everything being said about her has made it really hard for the public to actually see her for who she was. The other side of the cover is blank, it shows her fully. That's the version of her you get to see if you decide to ignore what people say and actually get to know her and listen to what *she* has to say.
A couple more things to mention:
    - The "The old Taylor can't come to the phone right now. Why? Oh! Cause she's dead," line is actually really clever if you think about the whole situation. Kanye West called her, knowin he would be able to paint her as the villain very easily. Now she can't come to the phone anymore, because that version of her that is kind and trusts easily is dead. In the music video for this song, you can see her standing on top of a pile of "old Taylors," as if she killed them and is now being rebirthed as this evil person that everyone wants her to be (and also there were literal murals being painted about how Taylor Swift is now "dead" after Kanye "revealed her true colors," so it's also a play on that).
    - "If a man talks shit (/If he drops my name) then I owe him nothing" is a reference to Kanye saying in his song Famous "I think me and Taylor might still have sex. I made that bitch famous." The original version of the lyric was "I think Taylor might owe me sex," hence her saying that she owes him nothing.
    - In the bridge of I Did Something Bad, she says she's gonna get burned either way, whether she actually did something bad or not, so "go ahead and light me up." "They got their [...] receipts and reasons" is a nod to the edited phone call of Taylor and Kanye's conversation that Kim leaked.
    - Delicate is about her meeting her then-boyfriend Joe Alwyn and realizing that he didn't care if her reputation was the worst it had ever been, he loved her for her.
    - In Gorgeous, the baby saying "gorgeous" at the beginning of the song is actually James, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds' daughter. Taylor played the song for them and James just kept repeating the word "gorgeous" over and over again. Taylor thought it was cute and asked Blake and Ryan if she could include it in the song, which they agreed to.

Look What You Made Me Do is a whole experience - the music video is what made people lose their minds. There's SO MUCH symbolism in it (as well as in the lyrics). You should watch the music video and a video where someone points all the stuff out in it!

With the drama stuff, I echo the opinions of watching the Loom What You Made Me Do music video. It broke the internet at the time and also sets the tone for some of the satire. She was both embracing the character the media was portraying her as while also undermining it with actual truths about herself scattered in there. She has said I Did Something Bad was partially inspired by Game of Thrones.
Most of this album is about how she went into hiding for almost a year and fell in love with Joe in that time, and how the residual trauma of the drama affected her ability to trust that she wouldn’t lose him too. Some of it is about how she was with Calvin for over a year but then had a short rebound with Tom Hiddleston before ending up with Joe.
The “making of a song” behind the scenes video for Gorgeous has lyrics that I prefer to the final ones and I think they give a bit more context to the relationship with Calvin too-
I’ve got a boyfriend, he’s older than us
I haven’t seen him in a couple months
I go through phases when it comes to love
She’s also been pretty intentional about not writing songs about Calvin. She said something like some people just don’t inspire you.
So yeah, most of these songs are basically about finding love while in hiding and trying to figure out the early stages of that amidst believing the world hates you and everyone believes you’re a terrible person.

26:46 Yeah...the media exaggerated the meaning of this album. This is definitely a love album but its in the perspective of what Taylor was feeling during her cancelation online. She also refreneces drama with some of her ex's like Calvin Harris, Tom Hiddleston and even with her now friend Katy Perry.
But these songs are Getaway Car, I Did Something Bad, Dont Blame Me, This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things and Look What You Made Me Do
But thats pretty much it honestly.
The rest are her complex emotions of feeling cancelled while also being in love with Joe Alwyn.

Regarding the context of this album, most of it is actually the story of the beginnings of her relationship with Joe. The aggressive opening songs, up to So It Goes... are the reflection of Taylor being in that era of the hate train. Arguably angry - that why most of the opening songs are aggressive asf. But in the midst of the chaos, starting with delicate - she found and opened up to someone who truly loved her for her. That's why starting with gorgeous, she actually spoke less about her reputation per se, and more about her lover (wink wink). Of course with the exception of TIWWCHNT. Reputation to me is her healing album. From an angry person, being fed up with all the drama, to someone who's content and at peace by the end of new year's day.

Reputation is divisive for the reasons you said but also I think because it's such a roller coaster of emotions listening to it. First it's like "this is Taylor Swift???" and then it's like "I don't know if I buy this from her" but eventually it settles into your brain and you find yourself humming songs you thought you hated. I disliked Gorgeous at first...now I love it. When it first came out I actually only liked a couple of the songs. Now it's a no skip album for me.

Most/all of the love songs in this album are about Joe, as during her "disappearance" she had met Joe. In this album she kind of is catching fans up on what they missed and if you look through what was going on during the time leading up to the release of this album; there was the Kanye thing, but she really only addresses this in a few songs. During that time she also started and ended things with Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston, and met Joe who she was starting to fall in love with.

  • @hannahmarie08
    @hannahmarie08 Рік тому

rep is a love album disguised as a revenge album :) it was born out of the Kim/kanye drama which is one of the reasons why sonically it takes on a darker tone, but 2016/2017 was also when she met and was falling in love with Joe Alwyn (who she went on to date for 6 years; rip). the album *was* sort of an artistic rebirth, and since the world hated her and was calling her a snake she decided to lean into that conceptually - she really had one chance to come back, and releasing 1989 2.0 as if nothing had happened probably would have just gotten some eye rolls from the general public. However, I think she probably also knew that having almost every song be related to the drama would be overkill and people would say she was painting herself as a victim, so sprinkling in a few songs like "I did something bad" and "look what you made me do" amidst the more numerous "positive" songs would go over better overall.
p.s. - definitely watch the music video for look what you made me do! it's one of if not the strongest of her career and viewing it in the context of what had happened in 2016 helps you understand just how crazy it was that she came in swinging like this.
