DiResta: Bandsaw Letters
Вставка

- In each episode of DiResta (every other Wednesday), artist and master builder Jimmy DiResta (Dirty Money, Hammered, Against the Grain, Trash for Cash) lets us into his workshop, to look over his shoulder while he builds whatever strikes his fancy.
If you've watched a few DiResta videos you know that Jimmy is a master with a bandsaw. He's also really fast. Don't try to copy his moves if you're fond of your finger tips. But in this episode Jimmy slows things down (a bit) to let us see how he does it. Read all about it on MAKE: makezine.com/video/diresta-ban...

the tilt!!!!! pure genius!
To people complaining about losing fingers etc in the bandsaw: NO you won't if you know what you're doing! People in some countries (yep, that's you Americans :p) have so many warning labels and fear of power tools that it's amazing how you ever get anything done in construction or carpentry! The tools doesn't have a mind of its own and they won't attack you when you turn around. The only thing that could happen is what You do!
Skill comes with practice and in many cases safety guards add too much complexity and in fact causes more accidents just because of that. Sit down, relax and know that the guy you're watching knows his shit - and he's got all his fingers where they are supposed to be! Stop worrying about everything, plan the task ahead and if you can't control you brain enough to keep your fingers away from the blade, then don't do it. Don't judge others based on your skills.
I also use the bandsaw in this fashion and I also cut veneer on the bandsaw and I have never been in any danger. Once I had a kickback on a large circular saw, but this was due to an over-engineered safety device... I removed it and now I'm never afraid, or worried, about kickbacks again.
Use common sense and if you lack this then stick to do whatever you're comfortable with ;)
my mom yelled from the other room "why the hell are you listening to those damn birds?''
Just wanted to say thanks, i was inspired to make a simple cutout on the bandsaw of my daughters name, and i used a block of cut off 4x2 pine that was actually in my firewood pile. Its probably one of the most beautiful things i have made from wood if i do say so myself. My daughter has this in her room now and will hopefully have it for life. Thanks again Jimmy.
If only MAKE had a channel dedicated to project builds... I don't want to waste my time with interviews, lectures, live streams etc
+1
Wow, a visual representation of wisdom. This is beautiful. I have some massive projects to do around the house, and couldn't have seen this at a better time. Thank you for this man.

You have definitely mastered the band-saw.

My only complaint about this is that I can only click on the thumbs up only once.
Awesome Jimmy! I need a band saw. Another shop tool on my list...

Wow, you are the master of the band-saw !
Humilde opinião, Diresta deixa este canal interessante! Muito bom!
I lost two fingers just watching you do this!
That is brilliant.
Jimmy, I agree what Mark Twain mentioned. Is that a new band saw? You did a great job with that. Keep up the great work!!!
thats some nice bandsaw work! but what makes it great work for me is your shade/shadow created by spraying the 3 other sides of the words and edge of the board. very crafty :) love it!
Incredible!
It may not seem, my friend, but it is pure verdade.Your Brazilian friend
Джими, Вы гений с огромной буквы!
Great video. Got me subscribed. And most importantly, makes me wanna buy a band saw..
Nice work!
Cool technique in between the letters.
Awesome job

The way you did your i was pure genius
Coś pięknego.
Great work Jimmy!
What kind of font is it? I like that the letters connect. Looks cool.
Greetings from Denmark. =)
I like it what font is that? Letters are quite close together.
Jimmy can you recommend were to locate stencils like you used for this signs letters? Thank you
really artistic
Great vid, but how does your blade stay straight ? I've adjusted mine a lot of times and it still curves. Plus yours doesn't leave burn marks & mine does, how do I not get the burn marks please ? Thank you.
You really scared me when you started painting that ...Walnut? anyways, looks good :)
Wow, and he still has all ten fingers.
Darren Smith What are yo some kind of detective!? hahah
Haha just remembered it! Lucky cos your skills are amazing!
Random Hero that's why I use a scrollsaw!
What font was used for the letters?
I wish I had a bandsaw
my you are so talented... how much would have charged for a job like that?
i saw you on tv :O
you 're fucking awesome!!
you should have done comic sans, that would've been a laugh
genial tus trabajos que tipo de letra es esa ?
Ole ole y Olé.
There is a man that has spent too long at the bandsaw! Great skills there.
You are a human CNC!
Skill.
weirdly hypnotic
Tha master!
At first I was screaming :"No don't paint those black "! Then... Whoa!
it sounded like a long dentist's appointment!
Wish I can make it
Does time slow down around you while you work at near-light speed, Jimmy? ;-)
Wouldn't it have been easier to do on the scroll saw? P.S. Great job!
Headphone warning ><
Had to pause in the middle to give my ears a break
A great quote, but not by Mark Twain apparently. Some people say it was Agatha Christie, but they cannot confirm that either.
How many hours did you expend cutting these words, DiResta?
Those e's man. Those freaking e's.
Nobody uses a bandsaw like Jimmy.
hi what size is your band saw blade
Can anyone tell me what font that is? Cant find it in word :(
What font is being used here?
what is this kind of work called? woodworking? a welder? can someone help
Working in wood is most of the time reffered to as 'woodworking'. A welder is someone who welds two types of metal together.
its like having a laser
why not use your cnc for cutting letters in the woods?
All of the work he did represented the quote itself.
electricalsocket : the use of CNC tool does not imply in my opinion the loss of the designation "handmade"
Where's the fun in that? I mean yeah if he was pounding out these signs one after another I could see some using a cnc but this was a project that went on his wall, half the fun is actually making it.
Anyone know what font he's using?
Looks like Coolvetica but not sure
Either you forget your name often or you are really in love with yourself
What font is this ?
helvetica
Darude - sandstorm
now I need to buy a band saw... :-/
i see geting your pinky sawed off dosn't decrease your aptitude with the ban saw.
Don't use a band saw much, do you?
sidgar1 Not after I lost my pinky to that grizzly! Everyone knows that pinkies are the most critical finger when using the bandsaw...
*sadface*
***** You're (half) right. According to Jimmy:
"I severed my pinky through the bone. It's still there but 1/2" shorter"
twitter.com/JimmyDiResta/status/318214766818635776
Doesn't say how he cut it off or with what tool. It'd be really difficult to imagine how it could happen on a bandsaw, since your index fingers and thumbs are closest to the blade and the pinky is almost always facing away farthest out. Whatever cut off his finger took out 1/2" after it was sewed back on, so it must've had a much thicker blade than a bandsaw.
sidgar1 Yeah, I wasn't suggesting it happened on a bandsaw. But you make a very good point.
shouldn't it read ``the secret TO getting ahead``? Non posesive nouns n that
Wow, nice call moron. You really should learn to spell and use punctuation correctly before attempting to point out other people's grammatical errors.
sorry.
Wow, dramatic and rude reply to that... Yes, the quote is grammatically incorrect and it bothered me the whole time... 😳
This is about wood working not Grammar class, speaking of Class! That is what you sorely lack.
Get a life!
can anyone tell me what the size of that saw blade is. (in mm) smallest i can find local is 6mm wide but this seems a lot smaller!
it seems like 1/8 (3mm), in my country you don`t find sawblades in most hardware stores, but you can find them in places that sell bandsaws for supermarkets.
First!
congratulations, where do you want the award?
SilverSpoonMinecraft think the silver spoon already in there will get in the way
Should've painted the face of the lettering a lighter color than the background because it's kinda hard to read. Just a nitpick though. Outstanding craftsmanship!
They are a different color. I am guessing either you did not finish the video.
I mean the faces lighter than the edges, its dark on dark and it blurs together.
No Phantasy star =(
wanna sell it?
thank you for not carving out your name again
my ears hurt...
too dangerous... use a cnc
Fake
This guy even has DIRESTA written on the bricks of his wall lol
Wouldn't it have been easier to do on the scroll saw? P.S. Great job!
Scroll saaws are much slower and don't handle thick material very well as the blade moves in an arc. Bandsaaw is the tool for this job although the scroll would allow cutting on the internal voids for "e"'s etc a little better maybe.
