  • In each episode of DiResta (every other Wednesday), artist and master builder Jimmy DiResta (Dirty Money, Hammered, Against the Grain, Trash for Cash) lets us into his workshop, to look over his shoulder while he builds whatever strikes his fancy.
    In this episode Jimmy whips out a beautiful oak-framed mirror. He doesn't spray paint it with his name as he normally does with what he makes, but he does manage work a DiResta tag in there anyway. And watch for the simple, but clever way he scribes the oval for the template. Check it out.

    The reversed stencil in the background to appear forwards in the mirror at the end, a killer touch.

    What an incredibly brilliant video! The pacing is spot on - not too fast, not too slow - just right. As for the noises, they are delightful, so comical and act as a wonderful sound track. When it comes to the skill and artistry here though we step up to true craftsmanship and watch a master at work. I think tv channels should drop, all their tired boring game shows, quiz shows, so called 'talent' shows, etc., and just play videos like these - much better viewing and informative as well. Excellent!

    • @tcarney57
      @tcarney57 10 років тому

      Spitfire83 Well, he showed himself running a pencil around with a loop of string and the two focus points. I recognized what he was doing because I've done it before. Someone who hasn't would have no idea what Jimmy was doing. Moreover, It was on the screen for all of 2.5 seconds and of course he didn't explain how to measure and lay it out. Are we cranky today?

    • @tcarney57
      @tcarney57 10 років тому

      If you do UA-cam search, there's lots of step-by-step videos on laying out ovals. Some of them are pretty good. You can also Google "how to draw an oval" and find lots of stuff.

      Todd Carney Thanks Todd, i looked into it and i found great tutorials ... my projects involves drawing an oval over a span of 4 Metres on a vertical uneven surface . Ill keep practicing with half sizes for now until i figure a good flowing way to build the rig ! . There is always the projector method if i want to cheat !

    I did not understand the first router pass at 3:50
    Do the router give nicer finish than plain sanding or does the router "head" (or what-it's-called) roll over imperfections and thus have smoother result?

    • @jimmydiresta
      @jimmydiresta 10 років тому

      the roller bering on the cutter follows the "precise" pattern underneath cutting the frame into the same shape, thank you

    • @LH782
      @LH782 10 років тому

      jimmydiresta I think I got it: the wood of the pattern is much softer so it was easier to sand that down to precise shape and then use router to the hard wood?
      (my point above was that I did not understand why you just couldn't use sandpaper like you used with the pattern)

    What are the pros and cons in getting a band saw vs a scroll saw? What does a bandsaw have that a scroll doesn't?

    • @dirtymunke
      @dirtymunke 10 років тому

      A couple of things.
      A scroll is really meant for doing "scroll work" where you want really tight and close curves. As seen in the video, the bandsaw can do curves as well, youre just not going to get as tight with it.
