Why PUBG's Awfulness Made it Fun

  • Remember PUBG? I sure do. It's a fascinating game because there were so many inherit problems with it but it was still one of the most successful games... ever, actually. Was it just lightning in a bottle? Probably. I'd count it up to hype because it was something new at the time, at least in that kind of scale. Dropping in with 99 other players was super fun even if it played awfully. Is PUBG the reason we have unfinished games now? Do developers just think we won't care if something's unfinished? Who knows.
A lot of this video uses old clips that I took back when the game was in its peak, so that's why the frame rate seems to change from time to time.
I know this took a long time to put out, but I've mainly just been focused on College and procrastinating. I want to put out more in the future and I'm already writing some future videos. When I say new videos will be out "soon" that's more me hoping I can put them out sooner than later. I enjoy making these very much though. And I love that you all watch it, so thank you!! :D
Also, I said "especially" a lot in this video. Sorry :(

This kinda reminds me of why i prefer old versions of other games to there modern versions (Minecraft, gta 5 etc).
There's a magic with these old versions that can't be replicated. Part of it is nostalgia but i think there a charm to them that got lost as the games went on.
In terms of PUBG i haven't really played it, i dont like battle royles really. But i can sense the passion as you talk about this stuff and i can relate to the feeling you have while talking about it. Great video.
Also hope college is going well! I'm struggling with college myself so i get how hard it is to balance and manage. Also youtube really screwed with you this time. I didn't even know you made a new video until today. Sorry that shit happened to you and hope the video picks up traction/next video does better!

For me Pubg mobile was the peak pubg experience due to the fact that it was highly accessible , easy to run and you could play literally anywhere (unless your connection was shit).
I used to play it with my friends and cousins like....every day for 2 years , we would form a squad and just fuck around the map getting kills and messing with the vehicle physics. It was the most engaging experience i had ever had because of how fun it was to just be with your friends in this unbalanced glitchy mess of a game.
PUBG was fun when people just randomly ran into each other , that made it feel like a real fight where everybody is panicking and just saving their ass. It slowly started to deteriorate when players started focusing on rank , xp and cosmetics more than the experience itself.
I never reached the highest rank in pubg , even if i tried i couldn't because i wasn't there for a imaginary medal but instead to have a great time with my buddies , on the other hand the people I played with started getting frustrated due to stuff like this and then one day..... it wasn't fun anymore , pubg became a drag.It slowly started to add maps that focused more on competitiveness than on genuine fun encounters , cosmetics got ridiculous to the point it was downright a evil practice , the game tried too hard balancing itself and destroyed the original experience. The one where you just ran around scavenging , getting into random fights that get your heartbeat up.
Escape from Tarkov , from what i have seen , feels more like the original pubg experience but hardcore. It has those same tension filled fights and scavenging feels like what the old pubg had ( they don't even have clothing in loots now).
I think sometimes the players themeselves hurt a game more than the devs.

PUBG was a lot of fun when everyone was bad and the whole concept was relatively new. The kinds of interactions you could have always kept you on your toes and I found that those encounters were really intense. If I made top ten my heart would be beating out of my chest.

@@JawCrush holy shit exactly , i Remember my heart beating out of my chest when i was in top ten. It was so intense due to the fact anyone could catch you with your pants down at anytime and it got even worse if your weapon wasn't strong enough.
I agree , pubg was fun when none of us knew how to play it lol

@@lukky6648 The unpredictable nature of the glitches helped keep things fresh for me. That wasn't the whole reason I kept playing but it certainly helped

@@JawCrush while glitches on mobile were few , whenever we'd encounter them it was a blast.
The Ghillie suit was so broken too , it looked like something that wouldn't work but once you had it and layed down , you were damn near invisible lol , it was really fun to see people pass by you completely unaware.
When cosmetics weren't so rich , players would fight over a pair of pants while looting , running around butt ass naked looking for clothing items was hilarious. It was just raw and pure battle royale experience the way it was originally meant to be like.

I can not enjoy pubg now that voip is nerfed, no matter why they did it.
I'm also very glad I got to have so much fun in PUBG when it was still so new.
It's kinda awesome to have something that good and that rare and everyone else is missing out and might not even know it

Was never a fan of battle royales, as they always felt like a sniper’s heaven with how open most maps are. The social aspect did catch my attention (for pubg), but it was a shame that other devs never implemented such a feature.
Toxicity will plague any game with competitive nature, what matters is where it spreads. If it’s just vc and trash talk, that’s fine. You can turn off VC or turn that stuff out, plus it’s funny most of the time. But if it’s “I will target you and only you; I will ensure that your experience is soured by my pettiness/ego” or “I dislike you being on my team, so I will be teamkill/ignore you, and/or berate you for any mild mistake you make,” then it gets tiresome.
It didn’t help most battle royales focused on making them more competitive, and therefore, a less fun experience (in my opinion). Hearing that PUBG isn’t the same as it once was, was expected, but also saddening. It reminds me of how people who played Fortnite (Battle Royale, let’s not forget it wasn’t even intended to be battle royale) say how the game isn’t as fun as it was in 2017, and this is certainly supported by old clips of people playing the game. I feel multiplayer games (at least ones that are unique) are always great at the start, as everyone is on equal skill for the most part, so less people take the game seriously. Like Among Us, Overwatch, League of Legends, Dead By Deadlight, Cod (MW 2007 - Black Ops 2), or genuinely any game that feels slightly casual. Unfortunately, these games either shift to a competitive focus, or if they already were competitive, even further down that path. Which is what kills or sours the original experiences such games brought.
