What Payday: The Heist Got Right

  • Payday has a special place in my heart, and after playing the first game I had an epiphany: this game is great and more people should talk about what it did. Maybe I'm just fanboying over the characters, but the original four have this amazing chemistry that was lost over time. The Payday playable characters became this massive tree, each one with backstories, lore, etc, and it became a little much. Add great music and a clear tone and you have a damn fine game. You can pick it up on steam when it's on sale for like four bucks which I'd totally recommend.

One thing that PDTH and early PD2 had that's been completely lost is the sense of being whittled down by the opposition. Back then, your only way of healing was to use a precious medic bag charge, which was more valuable since they were a much higher investment than they are now. Nowadays the majority of perk decks give you some form of health regen, and even if they don't you can invest in hostage skills to get the same thing. Being downed is also meaningless thanks to Inspire - even if you're downed right out in the open in front of a hundred cops, all they need to do is run out, press F, then run back to cover. There's no risk to it at all. Compare that to PDTH where being downed in the open is absolutely a death sentence, and it's often just worth letting them get taken into custody and trade for them later.
Everything's gradually pivoted towards being totally self-sustaining. More and more weapons have gotten ammo pickup buffs so they outpace their ammo consumption, totally eliminating the need for ammo bags. Health regen, as mentioned, means taking damage is meaningless. The accessibility of medic bags means most teams will have at least two fully upgraded medic bags, if not the whole team - at four charges per bag, that means twelve free downs each. If everyone has medic bags, that's ninety-six downs in total before they run out of charges.
Since sustain isn't an issue, the only way to introduce difficulty is to just nuke players whenever they make a mistake, which is where the 225 damage heavy swat come in. When health is worthless because of how easy it is to regain, just kill them in two hits regardless of damage. When downs are worthless because of how easy it is to revive teammates, increase the spawn cap to ludicrous levels and swarm everyone so they're all downed at once.
Balance just felt so much better in PDTH and early PD2, where your mistakes were felt throughout the rest of the heist, rather than either having zero impact or instant failure with little in-between. Not to mention the health values going higher and higher to the point where guns feel so much less impactful. A REVOLVER taking three headshots to kill a taser just feels terrible.

    • @JawCrush
      @JawCrush  2 роки тому +29

While I do like the accessibility when it comes to healing in Payday 2, you're right. That sense of tension is lost and it seems the only way to get it back is for the developers to throw countless amounts of enemies at you to swarm you so you can't use those healing items/skills/perks. Same for ammo too, like you said. Instead of playing carefully and having to rely on what you brought you can just run out into the open, get a few kills and get a lot of your health and ammo back.

imo PAYDAY 2 lost it's direction in 2014, but 2016-2017 were the big pivot point to being basically a different game with the Hoxton Housewarming Party update, ever since that update the game just became a real mess and to this day, it's just never recovered.
I still love PAYDAY 2 though, the amount of time I've given that game is just astonishing.

    A few notes of mine:
I've always felt that the gameplay in PDTH, while harder, feels much more "fair". The amount of enemies almost never goes above 40, whereas Death Sentence almost always goes over 100 enemies. Sure, a Bronco can easily dispatch heavy SWATs, but you can die just as easily. The whole forced glass cannon playstyle makes the game feel like it can go to shit quickly if you aren't playing your A game.
Along with stuff about the tone, one way I sort of compare it is with voice lines. PDTH's bulldozer sounds focused and professional, whereas say, the Medic Dozer is half joking about his job to save people's lives. Same for heisters, PDTH Chains is, like you said, basically a drill sergeant, then there's characters like Joy who are barely taking this seriously.

Tasers are hellish in the first game, even on normal. They have a TON of health and if you're caught alone with them there's a bigger chance of you getting screwed over. It taught me to be VERY careful and to always be on the lookout for them.

Every class had its worth, there was no broken meta stuff which would trivialize everything and make every fight the same. Every map had somewhat of a story to it and a distinct atmosphere too! The OG PD2 was originally envisioned to be much like PDTH, both in terms of details and gameplay, as far as some of the unused game files go: there was more banter between the heisters, cops reacted to your actions (such as killing with the OVE9000 saw), the enemies were fewer in quantity but stronger on their own, and I just feel like bringing up a lot of misc stuff like gutted reload animations, Mosconi accounting for only 1 shot, that one removed Taser counter animation, etc. A lot of that is restorable with mods (RIP Projects Canary/Phoenix/Deadlocke), and if you want difficulty, you could try Classic Heisting or download older versions, but by all accounts this should've just remained in the game.
PDTH and OG PD2 are what I really really wish PD3 will be, and hopefully remain (although with it being a live service, I wouldn't get my hopes up).
Modern day PD2 is oversaturated and overbloated with content, as you said yourself, moving from a tactical shooter to a horde shooter. It spiraled down the moment that infinite heists such as White Xmas were introduced, along with health regen, and DLC weapons having to be stronger to attract new buyers. At that point it was less "Can you beat it?" and more "For how long can you survive?". The game is fun, but sometimes feels like a shell of its former self with way less challenge and depth.

They feel like they were designed to STOP you and what you were doing on top of trying to eliminate you, not JUST kill you like in Payday 2.

      @flooku987 I feel like the way pdth does it also gives pistols a better role than most games;
Typically you see either hand cannons that deal alot of damage which isn't ideal since it steps on the toes of rifles and makes no sense (I blame halo ce for popularizing this despite how much I love it), or you have pistols that are nearly useless that are intended to be ditched once you have anything else.
Pdth gave them a quite good role, not powerful enough to replace a rifle or smg, but good enough to feel right, and honed in on the niche pistols are designed for.

    THE POST-PAYDAY 3 COMMENT:
They've kinda struck a balance between PDTH and PD2, as expected. Cops generally move as squads, special units are rare with the Dozer being restricted to 1-3 spawns an assault depending on difficulty. Assaults actually feel like they matter again. Character interaction still kinda stinks despite cutting down on initial characters. Tone is kinda weird, it's supposed to be more like PDTH than PD2 but civilians are more concerned about missing their appointments than getting used as human shields. Dallas' little brother might have died in an explosion but he seems pretty chill about it. Heists are set up more like PDTH but still have very brief flashes of busy work like PD2. In PDTH every heist with exception of Heat Street felt like it could be the one the group retires on. PD2 focused more on building up to the big jobs with a lot of little ones. PD3 feels much more like 2 than TH in that regard.

The voices add SO MUCH character! While the weapon animations are awesome, there isn't much personality in them (I mean that since they're used for every character) and there aren't really any other ways to show that character. Hell, even your face is covered by mask so you can't get any sense of emotion whatsoever. Voices let the heisters speak their minds! You can tell how they're feeling at any given moment. It allows them to be more fleshed out through gameplay and have great chemistry with one another.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the lack of bagging. Cutting down the monotony of getting loot out streamlines heists a lot.
I feel like part of the reason why The Heist's gunplay is a lot oomphier compared to 2 is that the more outlandish options in 2 weren't available. No magically dodging bullets that by all rights should have hit you, no yelling at incapacitated heisters to instantly revive them, no talking cuffed police into fighting for you with a remarkably silver tongue (I know the original plan was bomb collars but it's not like those made the cut), no bringing a friggin minigun to heists, and so on and so on. At best you get a grenade launcher. Aside from making The Heist feel a lot more grounded, it really makes it feel like you're fighting the police on a similar level, like you can kill them almost as fast as they can kill you.
I also like how The Heist has a lot fewer XP levels compared to 2. The Infamy system really seems to drive players to do the same heists over and over just to arbitarily boost their levels up. 10000 levels just to get all the Infamy related unlocks, and 40000 more just to max it out. By comparison, The Heist has like 200 levels, which while it might still take a bit to max out is peanuts in comparison, especially considering how many hours the average Payday player has in the game. (And if you really wanted to grind for it you can get three buddies to do the overdrill multiple times and probably knock it out in a few days.)
I agree with what you have to say about how the heisters talk a lot more to each other and regarding heist progression in the first game. I think my favorite lines in this regard is when you get to the vault in Diamond Heist and find out that the codes are incorrect, whereupon the heisters vocalise their frustrations until someone suggests seeing if there's anybody important at the party they can hold hostage.
...man this is a really disjointed series of paragraphs, I dunno why I typed my thoughts out like this.
(I still maintain that at the end of the day, both Payday games feel more like an inverse of John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 than they do heist films and ECM rushing in the second game is the closest it comes.)

    • @JawCrush
      @JawCrush  2 роки тому +7

There is bagging though, even though it's only in Slaughterhouse. I really liked how you didn't have to move an endless amount of bags in First World Bank however. In Payday 2 it's SOOOOOO boring. I hate it so much, especially when I'm solo.
I did like the gameplay/gunplay tying into the tone overall, it's all grounded.
There's less levels sure but there's also a lot less heists. I do like the variety the second game has for the missions you can do for a lot of XP. Big Oil is still very fun to this day, even if you can't stealth day 2 fully. Payday 1 heists are all bangers though.
I remember getting footage for this video and I had done like 6 Diamond Heists in Payday 1 up to that point and the gameplay I was capturing just so happened to be the attempt where the codes messed up and Bain was like "Uuuh, uh, uhhh..." and all the Heisters were like freaking out. It was awesome. "DAMMIT! IT DOESN'T WORK! BAIN?!?!"
If your comment is disjointed my response will also be disjointed lmao

Unfortunately, It's highly unlikely Payday 3 will have the same depth in character interactions that Payday 1 has. The only way to mimic that would be to go for the more "canonical" approach to the heists, where different groups of characters are locked to a heist, like the different campaigns in L4D2. That would allow for more characters without compromising on character interactions, but that wouldn't allow you to play your favorite character always, and the game might have to launch with roughly the same amount of characters they want to keep in the game.
There's no good solution, and while PD2 definitely improved in character interactions over time, I doubt PD3 will ever reach PDTH's levels if they want to have multiple characters, which was also an issue in Back 4 Blood.

(this comment might be long because i am a very passionate to payday too)
the voicelines in PD:TH will forever be great, but a small thing i wish you talked about, the animations, god i love the animations
seeing them running to the ends of corners, looking down at the vault when you finally get into the back, it makes them feel less like ai and actual people
theres very little of these animations in PD2, its to the point where i screamed when i saw the ai going through the vents during beneath the mountain when the door closes
    also cloaker wallruns, terrifying.
what makes the enemies feel also more scary to me atleast is the difference between them, the cloakers are in their own taskforce called SPOOC (haha funny calling the fbi spooks), but that big patch showing that is completely gone in PD2, the tazer has an electricity patch, theyre not apart of the SWAT, theyre clearly all in different branches for the police force, but theyre all the same, its boring
speaking about the seriousness in PD2, im guessing what happened is there was alot of different thoughts, wanting to change alot of things, and just so much experimentation that didnt get enough work when being implemented, the start of the goofy wackiness had to be vlad, almost all of his heists are just "ukranian man wants you to ______, go fuck them up"
the goofiness in story could be accountable to bo andersson wanting collabs, which is nice until it ruins the canon, to the point where some anonymous guy had to make lovecraftian mush which retconned alot of stuff, and left holes more than the cops youve been shooting at
(im talking about payday i have to specifically rant about him)
id blame alot of stuff on bo andersson, ulf's brother and ex-co-owner-ex-owner of Overkill
if you looked into what happened, alot of things point to bo being extreme arrogant, ignorant, and downright a douche, he took money from the stocks to fund his STARVR, yeah, that crap mask is a real thing that bo really tried to do, but no one liked a widescreen vr headset
most problems with payday was shifted onto almir listo, who was a spokesperson for them, hell, there was a whole thing going around crimefest 2016 on 4chan where a guy with wolf images would say the idea of safes was almir's idea, which in reality, was LionGameLion who thought of it, the whole microtransactions fiasco couldve been due to bo seeing how well the DLCs did in PD:TH, its all theories, but i truly think it went all downhill mainly because of him
one last thing, 2:55 you shouldve used the image of him violently eating an orange, the least flattering image of him
one other last thing, the music is curated to the heist so much to where the names can be alternated with the heist, ive been calling no mercy code silver and counterfeit home invasion for years

For Payday 2 you can get a bunch of different perk decks and skills to stay alive, when in Payday: The Heist, the strategy is just "Dont Get Shot". Payday 2 is more fast paced where you do about 10-15 minutes for a heist, but Payday: The Heist is much more slower, taking 30-45 minutes a heist (unless im just bad). They don't even call each other by their names until they talk to each other in the elevator, how crazy is that?! Payday can have those little interactions and when they work they work very well in adding a little bit of immersion or tension into a heist

  • @sokolov49

I believe that originally PD2 was going to just be PDTH but expanded and built-upon after looking at the Alpha footage.
The game retained the same feeling as it's predecessor but also felt more real and dynamic. The original music tracks like The Mark had the same dark theme until they were replaced in 2014 with the remade versions we know today.
While the first game made a reference to Heat with the speech, the second game had an entire reverb system to replicate how the shootout in the movie sounded like, and personally I think it's the most forgotten and underappreciated part of the game.
The police also attempted to be tactical, instead of just rushing you endlessly, some squads would remain outside behind cars, objects etc. to prevent you from going out of the besieged building while other squads would stack up in a room, ready up and proceed to the next room in order to hunt you down.
Imo, the overall weapon balance destruction in modern PD2 happened when the new skill tree arrived and Mayhem+DS came in, because the weapons became dependent on skills than the weapon itself.
FPS animations were also downgraded so you don't actually see any 'visual recoil' like your gun shaking cuz of the amount of recoil, this is hard to explain but in modern PD2 it's pretty much only just the screen shaking now when shooting.
(fun fact: player third person anims used to behave like bots' & cops' so you could lower your weapon when not shooting, raise your weapon when aiming down sight etc. this is broken because the game fails to check whether you have the Lock N' Load skill, so it raises your weapon permanently)
I'm not here to bash on PDTH, I agree with this review and I think it's a solid first game in the series which would explain the hype behind PD2. I just don't really see many people look at what PD2 tried to be when it launched.
Unfortunately PD2 died rapidly after it's peak in early 2015 and ever since it's been a slippery slope. Despite the sharp downfall of the game people still prefer modern PD2 over PDTH so I'm glad this video exists.
I just hope PD3 will take inspiration from PDTH and 2013 PD2 instead of basing an entire game on modern PD2 and fan service by adding a pre-order spoon skin or something.

I have 590 hours in pd2 and there are still some weapons I've yet to use, and that stems from them being completely useless or just overshadowed. pdth has a quarter of what pd2 has, yet what it gives is impactful even if it finds use in certain difficulties and heists only (poco and stryk come to mind instantly).
talking about impact, god damn is killing satisfying in pdth. pd2 feels good too, but it's more punchy when you aren't mowing down mindless swarming drones. and that visor breaking effect and sound whenever you headshot a heavy SWAT, nothing signals dopamine more than headshotting multiple heavy SWATs in a row with the M308.
as you've mentioned already, pdth has more heist and situation-specific voice lines and that's what makes pdth so much more immersive. in pd2 you'll hear the same 6 voice lines over and over again and it gets a tad bit tiring at some point. whenever I play pdth I always hear an unique voice line that I haven't heard before, and I wish pd2 shared that same property, though I can completely understand that making hundreds of unique voice lines for the 30+ characters this game has takes lots of time and money, albeit this all falls on overkill themselves. they COULD'VE added alternative voice lines for assault and control/fade phases, which is one of my favorite details in pdth. on the topic of audio, I loved the gritty songs of pdth so much more. pd2 songs are great, but feel out of place for a situation where the lives of civilians and police officers are at stake just because of 4 robbers.
and to top this comment off, if pdth were to hypothetically get another update, I REALLY wish the experience system would get revamped. until level 145 you're not much of use, and it takes ages to get to there (it took me about 60 or so hours to reach level 145, and another 20-30 to reach level 193, this included full overdrills btw). coupled with pdths unforgiving difficulty on solo, leveling up can really be a hassle.

An actual down to Earth video playing PD:TH? Am I dreaming? Great vid but just an observation, PD:TH has more difficulties than you think, it has an extra hardest difficulty called Overkill 145+ unlocked by getting to reputation 145, it was originally the highest level you could go before the Wolf Pack and was added as an update, like Deathwish in PD2 was.

When you talked about the amount of characters I realized one of my biggest problem with payday 2 is the amount of characters. I got the game during the summer sale this year and so far I'm loving it but the thing is I feel it takes a lot longer to understand the characters cause how many there are. I came from another shooter Left 4 Dead 2 and by 15 hours I understood both groups but I have 40 hours in payday 2 (very little I know) and I still dont understand chains. I probably just need to play more but that's what I felt.

What make me want to play more is the loot, the more I take, the more I want and it continu endlessly. In Payday 2 One Down Death Sentence is almost impossible to secure all bags if you are not patient (like me). Doing the heist, steal everything, kill a couple of cops and go.

I only got to play PDTH very recently, nearly a whole decade after starting with 2 and I have to say I agree with most of the points made, if not all. The contextual dialogue between the heisters (and Bain) was great to experience in places like Diamond Heist or the response to seeing Matt having handcuffed himself to the briefcase.
One minor detail about combat that I think you missed is the fact Heavy SWAT visors just explode if you kill them from a faceshot, whereas in 2 there's only the helmets flying. Although a small detail, it absolutely adds to the aforementioned "oomph" of the combat, especially when using the power weapons like the Reinbeck or the Bronco.
There's also the added innate difficulty. Even on Normal, PDTH greatly punishes you for trying to play recklessly and frequently staying out in the open as if it had the same leniency as 2, personally I appreciate that as it makes me actually consider with actual care what my next move will be during an assault and such.

Thanks recommended, I agree on a lot of the points made here. There were a lot of problems with payday 2s development, the insider trading business, microtransactions, random ass dlcs with hila and ethan playable characters. I think they just kind of tried everything and that's why the game has a lack of consistency.

at launch, you couldn't choose your music in payday 2 but it was always the song made for the specific heist you were on. this includes different days and escapes.
Honestly, Payday 2 was WAY more like payday: The Heist at launch. it just radically changed as time went on until it was something completely different.
The soundtrack lost a lot of it's subtlety, the main characters became scarcer, the guns got way less shiny around the time clover was added, the new difficulties made everyone have to adapt to ridiculous builds that felt more like a 90's fps rather than a gritty skin of your teeth battle against highly professional badass fbi/swat operators, the grounded concept of a team of experienced heisters was shattered in place of globetrotting super-terrorists, and the overall realism kinda just got thrown out the window.

Man, finally - someone else shows some love to the first game, and the one that got me into the series.
On your comments on the gameplay, I'd even argue that everything you mention means that the gameplay _is_ actually different to the sequel. One of the things that brings me back to PD1 is that thanks to the gameplay, you don't feel invincible. The game does a great job at restricting the player so that you have to use strategy, communication, and your wits in order to survive; you have to outsmart the cops, not just outgun them.
A while back I played through Heat Street in PD1 with a friend, and he got shot down. In the sequel, no big deal - someone would have Inspire Aced and they'd just mash E until they got up. But in PD1, it became this massive event. We had to stop, take stock of the situation, and manage when to go for the rescue, and who would provide cover. It felt _amazing,_ and I think gives the gameplay of the first game such a different feel to the one-man-army sense of PD2.

If everyone can remember, Payday 2 was a rushed job. They had to release it in beta to get some funds so they can keep going. Thankfully they kept patching it and fixed dozens of problems which is what made people keep coming back even after it’s buggy launch.
What baffles me is that they never added the small details from Payday The Heist (or even made the AI slightly better). Even during the game’s peak they never bothered to make the game they truly wanted, just making DLC after DLC (some great, some terrible, and most just average). It really was quantity over quality for Payday 2, even at its peak.
As an example, in some of the heists on launch, the “cube maps” were broken (or were broken at some point down the line), so the light sources never casted shadows. It remained broken (without a mod) until 2022 or 2021, when overkill were making bonus dlcs to stay afloat.
Another example are the civilian killed voicelines. Did you know they’re on a tier system? The more civvies you kill, the harsher Bain/Locke will scold you. This was broken *since launch,* and remained broken (without a mod) until 2022 or 2021. Want to know how it was fixed officially (and unofficially)? By adding a “return” at the end of the function’s code (which I think increments the tier), which ends the function’s process until it’s called again.
Edit 2023: Looking back, I can understand why Payday 2 ended up the way it did. Overkill needed funds to keep going, especially with 505games and Starbreeze wanting money. When they acquired the rights from 505, I think there was less dlc being pumped out, since there was less money they needed to pay up. At the same time, they couldn’t do much for Payday 2, due to engine limitations and not having a lot of time to figure it all out (before needing to do dlc #300), even after they regained the rights. There are dozens of voicelines that go unused, referencing several things (deployables, weapons, etc.), and the ZEAL voicelines were in the game from the start, intended for heavy units. Even mods like LIES, which improves the AI and makes use of cut voicelines, but even that leads to some issues.
Honestly, Payday 3 looks like what Payday 2 was meant to be. An improved, yet overhauled, Payday: The Heist.

I hope that for payday 3 they don't get too wrapped up in the same mechanics as pd2 and I hope they still are open to flexibility
For example civilians. In PD2 they do not act very human. Nobody plays hero, nobody tries to talk, nobody tries to hide, nobody tries to fight, essentially they only function as timers. If you dont intimidate them they eventually run and call the police. And i say "intimidate" very loosely because its pretty much just walking into their general vicinity and pressing F
Also police response. In PD2 Its an on off switch. If you get found, the whole police force is called and thats it. This made sense in payday 1 because the gameplay was focused on that. On the swarms of police but payday 2 started making it more flexible, and they added a stealth layer and realistic causes for police response, so why not make the response itself realistic too? Maybe if only gunfire is reported, the police just send a squad car to investigate, and if a robbery is reported, they actually send in hostage negotiation?
They did a small hostage negotiation thing in PD2 where its a few audio files "WE KNOW YOURE IN THERE" "COME OUT OR WE'RE SENDING IN TACTICAL UNITS" ... "SEND IN THE TACTICAL UNITS" but those are just literally audio files coming from no source. they're just being played.
What if these lines actually came from a real npc in the game world? what if you could genuinely negotiate?
Like i feel like so much of pd2 mechanics can be expanded and elaborated on in different ways. But there is totally a possibility that Overkill just sticks to what is familiar because expirementation with a game theyve worked on for so long would feel strange. Kinda like everything ubisoft released after Far Cry 3
But I feel the goal of making a good is just like any other art form. To create a feeling. And if that feeling is robbing a bank, then they should work further towards that now that we have better technology, the freedom of a new engine, and years of experience and new knowledge!
Its very obvious that ive had this bottled up for a while now i was gonna do a video essay on this but instead of writing anything i recorded 30 minutes of rambling on an iphone and never got around 2 editing it so thank you for making this video Jaws youve said what everyone felt

I remember when PD2 came out, it was fresh, new and exciting, there were so much new stuff in the game, things you could do and ways to do the heists, I wanted to get my hands on it at all costs. But now, looking at all the dlc, all the microtransactions and realizing the game became a cash cow, I feel a sense of aversion towards this game I was once so excited about and infatuated with. Looking at the amount of filler dlcs and the loot boxes in the game makes me want to barf. And that's why I have been sticking to PD the heist for the past five years, it's more limited in some aspects but at least it doesn't make me nauseous (inb4 overkill ruins it lol).

There wasn't really any game like Payday when it came out, that's what made it so special. It has become Overkill's cash cow, so I hope they don't ruin Payday 3 the same way, but pretty much all of Overkill's other endeavors have ended poorly. Anything that wasn't Payday, at least. Also, those loot boxes were removed a couple years back if I remember correctly, but they soured the player bases view of the game for damn sure.

I think something that would be key to mention regarding Payday 2 and its inconsistent tone is a trend we've been seeing more and more as games get longer support lives and the rise of paid cosmetics- I like to call it Clown Creep since its funny but basically you start with a game that's serious, lets use Rainbow 6 Siege. On launch very serious game, everyone was full serious tactical equipment, realistic armour with some personalisation from the op here and there. And then 5 months after launch they add weapon charms and cosmetic head gear with the Desert Storm op and thus begins the Clown Creep. A dilution of the aesthetic to serve DLC and or player progression of a """live service""" or whatever you want to call them. Now youve got ops being introduced with next to no tactical equipment/armour, less grounded abilities and they can cosplay Rick and Morty, or Lara Croft, or Leon Kennedy or Kiryu Kazima or have events where its the wild west

    • @JawCrush
      @JawCrush  2 роки тому +5

That's such a good comparison, and it's very weird to see. Rainbow Six: Siege was touted as this tactical shooter to end all tactical shooters; it had a lot going for it. It even was inspired by real life events I think, the plane being a really major one. Then there were microtransactions and seasons and all this other stuff which prolonged the games life but now I look back and I'm like how many operators are there?? Trying to keep track of each operator and their abilities would make my head spin. A game that I relate to this heavily is Modern Warfare (2019). It was advertised as going back to Cod's serious roots and I got it at launch and LOVED it. For the first month of the games life there weren't really any garish skins, there weren't any microtransactions, and everything was serious. It was crazy! Then, after that first month and all the big reviews had come out, the microtransactions started creeping in. They even had anime skins at one point. If you would have told me in 2012 that Cod would have anime skins I wouldn't have believed you. It's the trend now, I guess.
