Gaming's Optimism in the Early 2000s

- What happened to gaming? How were things, say, 20 years ago? This is a topic that I think about a lot because gaming as of recently has felt more and more soulless. It's not just nostalgia talking, either. There are a lot of genuine reasons that the games industry has fallen and continues to go down. I hope it ends soon, man. I'm getting tired of publishers treating us like animals. Also, you may have spotted some favoritism towards the PS2, which is because it was the console I have the most experience with, as well as it being the most successful in the 6th generation.
I know this is something different than I usually do, but video essays are something I've been trying to put out since summer of 2019. Each time I'd start one and have a huge amount of ideas and then it'd just fall apart. I didn't stick to anything, but now that's changed. Hopefully, it's something I can do more of since I really enjoy making them and putting my thoughts out there. I'm still trying to get used to doing this type of video and getting used to my voice on video but I'm making progress :D
But what do YOU think? Was everything too fast? More jokes? Less jokes? Also, thank you for watching, I really mean that. I put a lot of effort into this video and I hope I can bring more of my thoughts to you. Keep being awesome guys.

Even though Nintendo was lagging behind in some departments atleast they had alot of great games on Gamecube.
The Gamecube had a fantastic library, a lot of them being first party.
Sadly, I'm pretty sure western culture as a whole absolutely peaked from the late 80s to mid 2000s. Gaming is a perfect example for this.
a lot of this was Japanese culture
Not only is the editing great, but you also made really good points about games from classic and modern times
Great video 🔥
Yooo i really love the fact you included automodelista, for me it really represents what the early 2000s were about, experimental graphics, cool soundtrack and a whole lot of character
Really enjoyed all the points that you brought up in this!!
Overall great vid!!
Man, I just stumbled across this video and I'm bummed you aren't really active anymore. Really good stuff, I would love to see more. Thank you for this video :)
Aw! I'm really glad you feel that way about my stuff. Life's gotten in the way for a while. Job stuff, moving stuff, you know how it is. I'd love to get back into it sometime, since I enjoy working creatively. Maybe expect something over the next few months? I have ideas I wanna explore and talk about.
This video feels very professional. The way you narrated and the editing was done really well. Well done man 👏👏
The way your mom narrated did me really well last night. Tell your mom well done 🎉
DLC was at its worst during the 360/PS3 era, when companies would charge you for cosmetics that, in all bluntness, should've been in the base game - series like Borderlands and LittleBigPlanet were _especially_ guilty of this. Nowadays, I think most everyone realized that the right way to do DLC is to take a page out of Old PC Gaming's book and make expansions that are essentially Discounted Additional Games that wouldn't have made sense as a full release.
I really enjoy this style of video. I hope you make more. Regarding the topic, I think that you have a point. Nostalgia is certainly a part of it but the industry is much bigger and more mature nowadays. More money involved, more risk and therefore less room for experimentation.
can’t lie i thought this video had 2 mil views until over halfway through, good shit!
Thank you!
It's pretty cute that you included the Sega Dreamcast. It was very ahead of the curve, but lost too much prior to them even developing it.
Shame it basically died as the next generation was just about to start for the rest of the industry.
This video was VERY fun to watch, great job on this. I felt engaged the entire time and the gameplay/music added to the experience. Everything you said was very much agreeable. Keep up the good work man, I hope you grow big (and fast..).
Amazing video! Loved those tv shots and great editing throughout.
Really good video, and awesome music choices. No idea how you only have 1k subs
Really enjoyed your video. Thank you for your work.
This video is basically how I feel about modern gaming myself, glad I'm not the only one.
Thanks for making this, I'll be sure to share it around whenever I want to explain to someone how things were much better way back.
the closest thing to a new experimental thing is virtual reality, but even that was turned into a semi-normal thing now
uh oh, Outrun 2 OST and gameplay, automatic like
Great content. The ending of the video is entertaining.👍🏻
In the old days publishers used physical disks to distribute their games. Imagine if you release an unfinished game and now you have to recall millions of disks, deal with refund, and create a new batch of disks. I can imagine it would be very expensive even for the most successful publishers. Yet nowdays devs can upload patches at any moment and many people have unlimited Internet. Now they simply write "sorry for inconvenience" message on Discord and ask gamers to wait couple months.

Your videos bring me comfort and joy!
Great video, in the future I'd really enjoy it if you'd add a small bit of text to the corner telling us what game is on screen. The cell-shaded shooter in particular piqued my interest
Thanks for your feedback! I'll probably end up doing that in the future if the video focuses on multiple games. I put the games shown in the description but without any timestamps or anything. That particular game is called XIII
That was a special time. It sounds strange, but it had a certain purity.
Very interesting :) my first console was the PlayStation 1 then I got a Dreamcast and later a PlayStation 2
I miss those days.. games do not feel the same now days
Edit: I've shared this video on a retro gaming discord I'm apart of as I think some people there will enjoy it :)
For the algorithm!
I agree with virtually every point you made here great vid which deserves more likes.
this is such a good video
this was super well done man. great work
What a great video! I am glad the UA-cam algorithm recommended it to me - you‘ve earned a new sub :)
Great video! Really enjoyed it. Did you use a mix of music as I cant find the version of the last 2-3 songs you used.
Thank you! And I did not, but Ibuki's Stage theme is the "Arranged" version, and can be found here: /watch?v=Oa2kCDpvFKw
@JawCrush thanks so much for the reply! And keep it up your videos are great!
Wow I clicked onthe video without looking at views. Your video stands out. I thought you are fucking famous. You will get there man keep grinding
seriously amazing video. what crt tv is being used in the video :)?
There's two. One is a Memorex MT1091 9" used for the montage and the other is a Sony Trinitron KV-20TR23 that was used in the Agent Under Fire gameplay.
@@JawCrush you rock man! i got the bell on. i have an orion kinda small but makes god of war 2 look smooth. been looking for decent ones hopefully at a goodwill haha
@@Looneyboy Hell yeah! I got both of mine from neighbors/friends who were throwing them out. Good luck on finding more
Pretty interesting video
the ost in this ❤️❤️❤️
Y’all gotta go indie. Indie games still have this magic.
Also the Xbox Live phenomenon is not the be underestimated. I was a kid with a PlayStation while everyone was playing Halo and I chalk that up as one of my biggest social blunders that likely impacted my entire life downstream lol
Bro the Out Run theme
6:51 good analogy , this would be a great idea for a movie. but probably not in the way any of you are thinking lol
Rage Racer soundtrack SLAPPPPPPPPPPSSSSSSS!!!!!
What’s the game at 3:00? Recognise but can’t place it
TimeSplitters
I just want to let you know, this is exactly the type of videos I want to make on my serious channel, you’ve become a big inspiration for me.
😮💨
Hello, can you share the music you used in the video?
All the songs I used are in the description :)
@@JawCrush oh sorry I didn't see it the first time around, normally I expect links. Thanks!
@@yol_n Fair, I didn't use links because sometimes they get taken down
FOREBODING
Some games can't be remastered
I dont disagree with a lot of your points, but i think you're a bit jaded and cynical about modern gaming.
There's still tons of great, fresh, creative video games--even by 1st party studios.
People still go to midnight game releases. I attended the midnight launch of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom just last May.
Back when we owned our games ..........those were the times ☠
4:11 what that game ? look's grate
Bulk Slash on the Sega Saturn! It's a fun game.
thx@@JawCrush thanks
What is the cel-shaded fps game toward the end of the video?
It's called XIII, it came out on the PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Windows and Mac I think. A remaster came out for it but it wasn't reviewed too well. I haven't played it though so I wouldn't know. The original version bumps though, it's reminiscent of older action movies
@@JawCrush cool! Thanks for the info. Seems like an interesting game. Great video, by the way!
@@lucasblekeberg6648 Thank you!!! It's really stylish and it's a blast to play. I love the music too
@@JawCrush good to know!!

ISS 2000 - Menu Music 3
oh my gosh, a youtuber that knows how to use the word "was" correctly 😮
What she’ll shaded racing game was that ?
Auto Modellista! It was by Capcom if you can believe it.
@@JawCrush the game looks really fun must of came out on the ps2
@@Zayshy Ps2, Gamecube and Xbox! It's a lot of fun, would def recommend
0:16 dead or alive 2 ps2 alone is enough to disprove this point
9:38: dead or alive 2 ultimate ps2 alone is enough to disprove this point, mfs just sold updated versions of games as full price
8:52 play neo twewy
I don’t think there are more good games than ever coming out. I guess if you really like cinematic third person action adventure games.
Play more Nintendo
@@RhythmGrizz Nintendo releases a few games a year. I don’t want to play some dumbed down Mario sports game.
wtf only 2k views
what‘s the racing game called at 3:13 ?
Auto Modellista on the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox
Back then there were original IP's way more than sequels. Also there was quality over quantity. Nowadays we have nothing but remakes, remasters, sequels and DLC and season passes. Plus patches of 10gb and up. And let's not forget today's games stories are now full of woke crap. Yeah yesterday's games were better with story telling, character designs, gameplay and above all content lots and lots of content. Specially with the PS2 era.
This myth that 6th gen was the early 2000s is a big lie lmfao. I guess what was released between 2004-2007 doesn't count. The zoomers behind these videos
what do you mean
