Summer here in Oz. I have recently returned from being away for 17 days tent camping next to my car. I borrowed a 168Ah lithium battery charger with Anderson connection. I used my AS10 with the humidity. The battery pack has a Bluetooth adapter so I could monitor the use. Give or take a bit of leeway but generally the overnight drain was about 10%. I could top up the lithium battery by connecting my portable solar panels. This worked very well. Not sure I’d get a “travel” specific device, especially if it is noisier than the AS10.

I've got a full-sized Phillips machine as my 'home' unit, but bought a Z2 auto machine a few years back for travel. I always knew that I had a horrible time sleeping when on planes, and when I was finally prescribed a CPAP, I figured out why! The cabin pressure in the plane seems to make my apnea a lot worse and what was a 1-2 time per night event turns into an every-5-minute event cycle on a plane. The Z2 isn't nearly as comfortable as the full-sized home machine. I travel for work and have been using an HDM Z1 for about 4 years now. One of the best purchases I ever made. I see many others toting the recognizable bags for their home units through airports. I do keep a supply of HME's on hand. One thing that I didn't understand early on was how long they would last and how to treat one that I've only used a couple of nights. I called HDM one day and the woman in their support center explained to me that they have a desiccant inside and to wrap them up tightly with no airflow if only used a couple of nights. I find they typically last me 5 or 6 nights. When I have a morning that my airways feel a little dry, it is time for a new one. The sound doesn't bother me. Despite being almost 61, my hearing is still pretty good. There are just some background noises I can tune out more readily. I've been musing if a water tank for a Travel unit could be made with a collapsible bladder.
G'day, thanks for sharing your great feedback on the Z1. Glad to hear it's working well for you. The Z2 is also a nice unit ( very similar ). Have a great day. Nick
I use my airmini as my full-time machine, under the advice and care of my doctor. He felt the mini was better than nothing, even without the humidification. I keep bottled water by my bed, if I do wakeup with serious dry mouth I don't have to go far for water. A good chin strap seems to have helped alleviate some of the dry mouth. I just got my latest email from Philips, same old same old-it's been how long now-six months? I don't think it's any louder than my DS1 was, and I do travel, it's so easy to pack. And I've been told it's much quieter than all the noise I made before cpap therapy, so all is good.
Hi Nancy. Could you recommend the brand/model chin strap that you use? I've had a look on Amazon Australia and they all have pretty poor reviews. Thanks in advance.

got a airmini back when this all kicked off instead of using the Ds1 with the cancer? foam. I second the issue with th HME, even when using the humidx + for desert environments it left me dried out. only way I could see myself using this for more than a night or two in the winter would be with one of the standalone F&P heated humidifiers but that would still leave me without heated tubing
Nick, your explanation is spot on, air mini was more noisy when I trialled it ahead of a trip overseas. Didn’t like it nor the special mask limitation so got the S10 (upgrade from the old Icon). Humidification is important to me as I run it always on 2. So sadly air mini in future (when we travel more) might be on the cards for a few days but not full time.
G'day, I'm glad you agree :-). If you have a few dollars to spare each month please consider supporting the channel by becoming a member - cpap.review/membership . Much appreciated. Nick
Hi my original cpap is the resmed s9 fixed pressure with humidifier and my second cpap is the resmed AirMini. My pressure is in the good range in this video. Comparing them for noise I would say the AirMini is a little more louder from the fan/motor but thought the sound from humidx was more noticeable than the fan/motor. However I would note that the humidx level of noise and humidity would change quite a bit depending on the environment. For example on a night that had frost warning (very cold by Melbourne standards) there was a lot more noise and water droplets in my nasal mask and my noise was getting very cold while be no problem in an air conditioned room. The other issues with the humidx for full time use are, you feel like you are dangling from your nose and you can’t not tell when it needs replacement (I wish they had a coloured dye on it that changed colour with usage)
Glad you like them. If you find the channel useful please consider showing your support by becoming a member. Much love! Nick :) - cpap.review/membership
I trialled on a Phillips deathstation and thought it was great. In the midst of all the recalls I was ready to purchase & took a leap of faith on the Resmed Airmini, thinking if it doesn't work out as my daily driver, at least I can get a full size machine later on and just use the Airmini for travel. I haven't had major issues with noise or humidity (I don't even use humid-x) and haven't had a burning desire to upgrade. The two things I dislike is the proprietary mask/connection system and Resmed not giving patients access to their own data. Can mostly recommend this device as a full time machine, but others may have different experiences of course for the reasons outlined in the video.
G'day Simon, great to see that membership badge next your name legend. Thanks for sharing your experience with the AirMini bro. It's true, some people seem to do fine without humidification but most people do feel it improves the comfort of therapy and then there's some who simply can't use it without humidification. I was furious with ResMed when they made that proprietary connection (it's the first time ever a mask fitting was not universal). CPAP masks are already confusing but imagine if only certain masks worked with certain machines. What a nightmare. I belive you can actually write to ResMed privacy@resmed.com and request your personal data. You should do it! Cheers mate. Nicko
I purchased an Air mini after the recall. I liked it but the lack of humidification was really messing up my sinuses I was constantly sneezing like I had bad allergies. The Humid X plus cartridges didn't help. It's now a $900 paper weight! .
I wonder if you can hook up an external humidifier (aka passthrough) when using at home and not travelling? F&P and Divillbiss sell them, but when I researched I understood they may mess up with your setting somewhat and it will be a bit of trial and error (I’m not an expert on the topic but did some google research at the time when I was trialling the Air Mini. Ended up buying the S10 though.
Hi CPAP Reviews! Thank you for your cogent and lucid presentation and comparison of the traveler's and home CPAP's. I finally want to get the little ResMed model. My large home CPAP is a ResMed but it is on recall. It is 5-14-22 today and last October my medical equipment supplier said that being on the waiting list and high priority with age and level of severity... that I should get a CPAP in January. I wonder if I'll ever get a replacement as the rep at ResMed said it involves over one million people! I want to go camping first time in many years and to sleep with confidence using the travelers model. The battery is almost $400. Will you ever do a demonstration of how it works camping? I will be in areas without electricity and need advice on what would be a good portable solar panel so I can recharge the battery. Also, would buying one place me further down the waiting list since I have an toxic substance free CPAP?
I have both the AirMini and AirSense 11 and I find all the noise coming out of the AirMini to be at the humidifier connecting closer to the nasal pillows. It is aa lot noisier and take some getting used to. I find the AirMini unit itself to be just as quiet AirSense 11.
Hey Nick. Thanks for this video. The engineer in me still has a vision of a docking station for an AirMini. At the moment my therapy is self-funded, but if DVA comes on board I might try to get an AirMini to play with and find someone with a 3D printer ;-)
Hi Neil, the reason they won't do that is ResMed really wan't people buying 2 machines. If they make the travel cpap too similar to the full size unit then people won't bother buying the full size anymore. Keep an eye out on a vid i'm doing shortly on a new cpap that has exactly that and it's very impressive. Cheers mate. Nick
@@CPAPReviews I’m hearing you, but I still think that Resmed should consider the modular option on business grounds. There’d be a significant reduction in active stock keeping units and spares, warranty and re-work could be reduced to (mostly) the blower unit in the AirMini and a circuit board in the dock. Like I’ve said, it’s the engineer in me (rather than a narrow-minded bean counter) that gives me this utopian vision…lol. Cheers mate.
@@CPAPReviews I’ve actually moved on from engineering (medically discharged from the Army) and studying Bachelor of Nursing now. By the time I’m an RN, I don’t think Resmed could afford me on the basis of dual qualifications??
@@CPAPReviews hmmm tell us more Nick. I am currently using my old transcend auto since ds1 recall and looking to replace machine. Not if to wait for airsense 11 or buy mini. By the way what would the viewers buy for a travel cpap mini or z2?
I have the Airsense 11 and the Air Mini. My issue is I prefer breathing cold air at night. I'm not sure how to setup the Airsense 11 to have humidification but also breath cold air. I feel stuck. So, I've been using the mini for quite some time now.
Hi Nicko! My Aircurve 10 Vauto is broken and the VA won’t help me fix it but I have an old Airsense 10 auto set I’m using because it’s better than nothing. Can you please show me how to make it a bipap? Just became a member as well. Thanks!
Hey man, welcome to the club! Thanks for joining up :-). What i would probably try first is just switching the PCB board (the circuit board) from your AirCurve to your AirSense 10 Auto. I think you find this will work and it's a very easy swap. I highly doubt there's something wrong with the PCB board on your AirCurve and when swapped over to the AirSense 10 auto it should then provide all the same functionality (Vauto). Does this make sense to you? It's a whole lot easier compared with dumping and flashing new Aircurve firmware onto your Airsense 10 Auto PCB. Let me know if you understand. Cheers brother ua-cam.com/video/M9jdc9_WmwM/v-deo.html Nicko
@@CPAPReviews Thanks Nick!!!!! That totally makes sense. It’s just a loose bearing I think on the Aircurve and makes the turbine so loud I can’t sleep. Switching the PCB should be a cinch! Happy Sunday!!
@@CPAPReviews Ok sounds great, thanks! I assume you mean the main PCB with the display and knob, not the smaller circuit board on the side of the SD card and filter.
Nick I bought the Resmed mini after trialing the Resmed 10 - the first night or two using the mini I thought no way it’s too noisy - well I placed a folded towel under the mini and it’s reduced the noise a little - day 6 and I barely notice the noise anymore I love the simplicity of the mini not having to fill the humidifier tank with distilled water every day - I trial it for another couple of weeks before making a solid decision as Resmed has the 30 day exchange but so far all good - saw my sleep specialist a couple of weeks ago he couldn’t be happier my events are down to 0.5 p/h from 24. I have severe rem obstructed apnea oxygen levels plummeted to 60% for close to 2 hours in my sleep study - how do I assess my oxygen levels going forward? Does one just assume if low events means better oxygen levels?
I bought air sense mini it is awesome apart in the dead of winter but here in Qld 🤷♀️ what’s winter… oh and the fact my “technician “ can’t muck around with the settings remotely (it freaked me out when they significantly changed the numbers but did not let me know)
@@CPAPReviews I honestly did not expect that reply, let alone from a 2 year old video. You have just changed my life, sir. I can actually go camping again. You're a great man, thank you.
In looking at the specs of the AirMini it says: “You can run the AirMini off of a Freedom Battery the is paired to an inverter “ Can you explain what this is and if it costs more. Thanks 🙏
This was a great topic. I have tinnitis, so I actually wouldn't mind if my CPAP machine were a bit louder - I could do without a noise machine or a fan, if it were! Do you have any thoughts on weighted blankets for people with sleep apnea? I toss and turn quite a bit, and a friend suggested it might help. A Google search turns up conflicting advice, naturally. LOL
Wrap the travel units in a towel and the noise is gone, problem solved. I want the ResMed travel unit but it's really expensive and my insurance won't cover it, because they already paid for my ResMed 10 Auto. Wish they'd upgrade me to the 11.
I sleep with ear plugs anyway, given the noise of the mask and exhaust, and I don't use humidification at all (just heated tube on the main machine, and no Humidex disc on the travel one). Therefore, both my AirMini and AirSense 10 machines serve very much the same purpose. The trick with the AirMini is to put it much lower than the bed/head, like on the floor. It reduces the noise of the machine but also breathing noise inside the mask. One difference however between the fixed and portable machine: data/stats available. Not much available on the AirMini, compared to the AS10 (with or without third-party software).
Great comment mate, thanks for sharing that great information! Please consider supporting the channel by becoming a member - cpap.review/membership . Much appreciated. Nicko
No, and not much stats either displayed on the app. Pretty sure it can collect as much data as the full size machine, so app could have been made very useful, but Resmed decided to limit it.
Nick - Firstly Thankyou for this video. I've been using a Resmed AirMini for 5 years successfully without any dramas. I've never used any humidification so don't know any better. Typical pressures are 8 CMH20 +/- 2. Can anyone suggest how long I can expect my Airmini to work before replacement is rquired? When I bought it they suggested approx 7 years.
Hi James, a big thanks for sharing your experience using the AirMini. Since they are using the same motor now in the AirSense 11 it would be safe to assume that it should last 7+ years however they do say in the manual that the 'design life' is 5 years. If you have a few dollars to spare each month please consider supporting the channel by becoming a member - cpap.review/membership . Cheers mate Nick
I think they may have suggested 7 years if only used occasionally, as a travel machine, as the blower has a life expectancy in hours, rather than elapsed time. The issue Resmed have is that they state "design life" of 5 years for the blower of many of their machines, while their warranty is never 5 years. In the UK (and maybe in the EU), products are supposed to last a suitable time and built to quality, regardless of warranty, so a blower stopping working after say 4 years would mean to be eligible to a free replacement from Resmed or from the retailer... They haven't thought that through.
hiya, thanks for your video as always. i got an ad on this video for “excite osa novel sleep apnea treatment”. is this a scam? would be great if you addressed it given that it’s being presented alongside your quality content. cheers x
I like to ask if I buy the resmed s11 from the USA, will I be able to use in Australia since they have different voltage? Will resmed provide the same warranty in Australia?
@@CPAPReviews G’day Nick, thanks for the info, My S8 is well and truely overdue to be replaced and I really like the whole portability aspect of the Z2,. Like yourself I to like to go camping, however these days my better half finds the nightly raw much harder to endure/tolerate and so the idea of being able to lesson the impact on us both has great appeal, however my main concern any new machine would at least in the immediate short term need also to fulfil my daily treatment needs as well, as the S8 and I have a pretty restrained relationship to say the very least.
I wondered if a travel CPAP was worth it. Since I'm hearing impaired, the noise wouldn't bother me, but hubby is a light sleeper. Also, I have taken my ICON with me to Europe with no issues, so I think I will stick with the larger unit for travel. Thanks for this video. Btw: most CPAP videos are so dry and boring. Yours are not, thankfully.
i have some data that shows when offered a 30 day money back guarantee only 5% of people will return a travel cpap machine due to noise. It's only a marginal increase. Perhaps 5-10% noisier than a full cpap. Thank. you
I think the they are overpriced. And it’s probably going to be none insurance covered item since you probably have the bigger of the the two for home use. So it’s mainly a convenience product for traveling.
Yes, the AirMini is very overpriced and a high margin product for Resmed. However, it's down to competition and they know not many other devices of that size are available, so why would they sell it cheaper?
@@sebastien4116 they would be able to sell more by volume if they would lower there price. Most people don’t have the disposable income to buy them outright when your on a fixed income. This would also not be covered by insurance since your insurance will pay for one machine every five years.
@@davidallen9538 yes, I agree and I wish it was much cheaper. I am sure Resmed have done some analysis, in term of the maximum price they can charge for such device, without impacting too much demand. When there is hardly any competition, easier to charge higher prices. People on low income, not able to buy their own machines, will probably travel with their main CPAP machine. Having a travel machine is luxury, and can be charged as such. I am buying my own machines (private insurance doesn't cover those in the UK at all), and buying an AirMini one was more for convenience as opposed to necessity.
Excellent video. I’m considering getting a mini unit for camping and I thought they only took certain masks. Is that true or can you use any mask ? I’d appreciate your answer. Thanks 🙏
It's true to some extent: the AirMini is designed to only use some specific masks, because the tube is different. I believe it was a way for Resmed to make money as opposed to true requirement, and it's of course anti-competitive too (can't use other brands). However, some cheap adapters are available to use normal tubing with the AirMini. Note that there would be no humidity in that case, as the "humidifier" is built into the custom Resmed tube, but it doesn't work that well anyway.
In looking at the specs it says: you can run the AirMini off of a Freedom Battery that’s paired with an inverter. Can you explain what this is and if it costs more. Thanks 🙏

got a airmini back when this all kicked off instead of using the Ds1 with the cancer? foam. I second the issue with th HME, even when using the humidx + for desert environments it left me dried out. only way I could see myself using this for more than a night or two in the winter would be with one of the standalone F&P heated humidifiers but that would still leave me without heated tubing
G'day mate, not necessarily, there's plenty of universal heated tube systems you can get that work really well. Cheers
Thanks for the great info legend. Nicko
With the Phillips recall I use the Z2 Breas Travel CPAP nightly with an HME and wakeup refreshed.

F & P HC150 works great to add humidity. I use it nightly!

Hi there, thanks for your great comment
Spot on
@@neilwarnock1449 hahah love it mate! Too many bean counters at ResMed 😜 & not enough good engineers! Maybe you should apply for a job 😂
Thanks Nick great insight
Cheers brother! Glad you enjoyed it mate. Nick
I have the Airsense 11 and the Air Mini. My issue is I prefer breathing cold air at night. I'm not sure how to setup the Airsense 11 to have humidification but also breath cold air. I feel stuck. So, I've been using the mini for quite some time now.
The Reps at Resmed told me that the mini was meant to be used to full-time, when my machine was recalled
Cheers brother

@@CPAPReviews Thanks Nick!!!!! That totally makes sense. It’s just a loose bearing I think on the Aircurve and makes the turbine so loud I can’t sleep. Switching the PCB should be a cinch! Happy Sunday!!
@@jdizzle9011 You're welcome brother :-). Let me know if you get stuck and i'll do a video at home for you
@@CPAPReviews Ok sounds great, thanks! I assume you mean the main PCB with the display and knob, not the smaller circuit board on the side of the SD card and filter.
@@jdizzle9011 yes that’s correct. The small one on the side is the cellular modem 👍
Question about your hat! I assume Australia is hot. I cannot wear my felt hat in the summer. How do you deal with the heat?
The airmini HimidX waterless humidifier is better than a normal humidifier i think
Thanks for sharing your opinion and feedback. Nick
I bought air sense mini it is awesome apart in the dead of winter but here in Qld 🤷♀️ what’s winter… oh and the fact my “technician “ can’t muck around with the settings remotely (it freaked me out when they significantly changed the numbers but did not let me know)
Hi Jo, thanks for sharing your feedback on the airmini. Haha, that would freak me out also! Best wishes mate. Nicko
@@CPAPReviews thanks 😊
Can you hook up a battery to a full size machine for travel or do they draw too much power/not compatible?
yeah bro, can even run them off usb-c -ua-cam.com/video/mxI2YD6yKh8/v-deo.htmlsi=9NjT6GFEi7mJ7TVz
@@CPAPReviews I honestly did not expect that reply, let alone from a 2 year old video. You have just changed my life, sir. I can actually go camping again. You're a great man, thank you.
can these be used with a DC cord adapter? I have a jackery that I'd like to be able to use with my cpap
You would need a DC/DC converter for this device. Runs on 24V - ua-cam.com/video/rrcmHctvaE0/v-deo.html
Not sure you can try before you buy with cpap machines?
In looking at the specs of the AirMini it says:
“You can run the AirMini off of a Freedom Battery the is paired to an inverter “
Can you explain what this is and if it costs more.
LOL
How about SDCard support on the tavel units?
No SD Card no SleepHQ
Travel units only record summary data ( basic shit ) so SleepHQ would be useless anyway unless you wanted compliance reporting etx
Wrap the travel units in a towel and the noise is gone, problem solved. I want the ResMed travel unit but it's really expensive and my insurance won't cover it, because they already paid for my ResMed 10 Auto. Wish they'd upgrade me to the 11.
Will that damage the machine wrapping it up?
@@gloriasaliba3395 How would it damage the machine?
Do these travel units need a battery system? Or better said: Does the kit come with a battery charger unit with it? Thank you
Those are separate products. This seems to be the case for every travel machine I’ve researched.
Nicko
Does the air mini have an sd slot?
No mate, it just does bluetooth to the myair app. Cheers
No, and not much stats either displayed on the app. Pretty sure it can collect as much data as the full size machine, so app could have been made very useful, but Resmed decided to limit it.
DS2 data is encrypted? No OSCAR?
Do you trust doctors to do what's best for you?
Cheers mate
Nick
Somehow I read the title as: "Full CPCP time travel machine!"
If there isn't destile water which water I can use. Currently in the Dominican Republic but can't find Destile water
I think you mean distilled water. That is water that has been heated in to steam and then condensed again, to ensure its purity. Good luck!
Looking for long best life battery for Airsense 10 to last 4 nights. Am on 10 pressure. Kind thanks. I'm in Sydney
www.remsleep.com.au/product/remsleep-airpro-360-cpap-battery/ this is your best bet mate. Probably go close to 4 nights on a single charge
So how does the noise level of the Z2 compare to that of an S8?
G'day David, i would say pretty similar mate. The Z2 also has the Q-lite tube muffler which helps. Cheers
Cheers
Thanks Kimi :)
Think using a travel CPAP machine as a regular machine could become problematic over time.
I don’t think so if they have the same motor
How do you try the travel machine without buying it? Thanks
Ask if you can hire one :). Cheers
Because a noisy machine is ok when travelling?
i have some data that shows when offered a 30 day money back guarantee only 5% of people will return a travel cpap machine due to noise. It's only a marginal increase. Perhaps 5-10% noisier than a full cpap. Thank. you
I think the they are overpriced. And it’s probably going to be none insurance covered item since you probably have the bigger of the the two for home use. So it’s mainly a convenience product for traveling.
I think that's a very fair and reasonable comment David and i tend to agree with you. Cheers
In looking at the specs it says:
you can run the AirMini off of a Freedom Battery that’s paired with an inverter.
Can you explain what this is and if it costs more.
