00:35 - Aerophagia - Air in your stomach
03:00 - Dry Nose and Throat
    05:40 - Dry, Sore Eyes
Hi Everyone, hope you're all safe and well.
    1. Aerophagia (stomach bloating)
Aerophagia is excessive air swallowing. It’s a condition that occurs when you have air entering your gastrointestinal tract, including your intestines and stomach. As this air builds up, it can cause significant discomfort in your bowels and belly. The most common aerophagia symptoms are:
    Stomachache
    Belly bloating
    Flatulence
    Heartburn and acid reflux
    Burping
    An uncomfortable “full” feeling
Causes of Swallowing Air with CPAP
Some causes of aerophagia may include:
    Pressure is set too high
    Pressure is set too low
    Nasal congestion
    Mouth breathing
    Exhalation problems
Solutions for Swallowing Air with CPAP
If you’re swallowing air with CPAP, here are some aerophagia solutions you can try:
    1. Check the Pressure Settings
If you have a high pressure, consider dropping it down a bit to see if that helps resolve the problem. If it does help, just check to make sure you AHI number isn't going to high (ideally you want that number under 5 but under 10 should still be find).
If you're AHI is high, your apnea might be causing you to gasp and swallow the air in also.
Experiment with your pressure to see if it helps alleviate the stomach bloating.
    2. Check Your Mask
Figure out if you’re using the wrong mask. For instance, a nasal mask isn’t the best choice if you’re a mouth breather. Your mask might not be the best style or size for your face. If you’re experiencing pressure point soreness from the straps being too tight or a frequent mask leak, consider picking a different mask.
    3. Obtain Expiratory Pressure Relief
Most CPAP machines today have expiratory pressure relief features. They may be called BIFLEX or AFLEX, depending on the machine brand. This feature reduces air pressure automatically upon exhalation and could help decrease or eliminate aerophagia.
    4. Adjust Your Sleep Position
Your sleep position is another essential factor. If you normally sleep on your back, it might be better to sleep at an incline which can prevent a “kink” in your esophagus that could cause it to easily allow air flow into your stomach.
    5. Try a BiPAP Machine - Consult your doctor about this though.
Bilevel positive airway pressure machines, or BiPAP machines can help relieve aerophagia symptoms.
    6. Try an APAP (Auto) Machine
In one study, switching from a CPAP machine to an APAP machine led to reduced aerophagia symptom severity. The group of patients being treated with APAP saw substantially decreased median therapeutic pressure levels when compared with the patients using CPAP.
If you don't have a heated tube i suggest you get one. There's a great aftermarket universal heated tube system called hybernite.

I contribute the high scores to a vitalsleep mouth guard I have been wearing at the last 4 years.iterally NO cpap leaks. My dilemma is irritated throat from the CPAP. Pressure set at 10. Use nose pillows, medium size. Sore throat and developing smokers speech. Will this eventually lead to throat cancer? I am not a smoker or eat out the other thing.

One complaint I always have is that you see a Doctor and their staff to get set up originally with using a CPAP machined but then that's basically all the interaction you have until you have a major problem with the machine which could be many years later. Hey Nick, just found your very informative channel. When I got my CPAP 10 months ago, my GP (not my sleep doc) warned me about the dry nose and recommended using a nose moisturising ointment. It's a saver! I use it every night and don't have any problems with dryness, although I don't have a humidifier and my nose membranes were dry to begin with and prone to small bleeds. The one I use is called Rinopanteina and contains oat protein, sodium hyaluronate, panthenol, vitamin A and other substances. I never go a night without it.

Thanks for this info Nick. As always, love it when the kiddos are included. It teaches them valuable lessons they don’t learn in school. The kids always bring a smile. This video will hopefully keep others from panicking when their S9, S10, etc. reach that “magic” number. I understand why the manufacturers do it but don’t like their tactics when making an inquiry. It is appalling how ResMed (and I’m sure others) respond by trying to sell a new unit or to charge something exorbitant for repair. I recall taking my Audi to the dealership for some repairs and 48 hours later I receive a text from the dealership wanting to take my car in trade-in and to put me in a brand new Audi. Hell, if I wanted a new one I would have bought one. Same goes for our CPAP devices.

I guess I'm lucky because I have not had any problems with my Cpaps over the years. I think I'm on my 4th machine and I never even lie down for a 10 minute nap without strapping on my headgear. I think the last time I checked the meter showed I was 99.2% compliant. The Dr. was impressed. Once recently I forgot the cord when we were going for an overnight trip. I don't think I slept more than 3 or 4 hours. I hear people who don't like them and wish they would give it a better chance. For a lot of people it takes some getting used to. But it is SO well worth it. As you can tell I'm a total fan of this system.

Great video Nick and thanks for helping solve one of the problems I’ve been having with my CPAP therapy. I’ve been getting bloating and stomach pain which the Dr kept saying was reflux, and I’ve been on medication that hasn’t helped one bit. After watching your video I decided to try lowering my pressure from 10 down to 9…it did help but I was still waking up with stomach pains. I dropped the pressure to 8 and my AHI was still well below 5 so dropped it down to 7….that’s when my AHI began going up, but still under 5…so I tried 7.5 which is perfect. Mine is at 17 because I stopped breathing 72 times an hour! I had to adjust the machine at first but once set there's no readjusting it again. This is something that your doctor will have to do. It takes a while to get used to it. I don't have stomach trouble and I have acid reflux but I don't wake up with bloating in my stomach. I do have some grogginess when waking depending on which side I slept on. This makes it harder to not be sore but other than that I have had no problems sleeping with this setting. Just ask your doctor about it. Maybe she/he can decide which is the best course of action to take.

I actually love my CPAP and take it where ever I go! Thanks to this therapy over the past two years, I no longer nod off during the day, and driving! Driving used to consist of driving for about 20 minutes and then getting drowsy and fighting to stay awake. Or when I was teaching -- during study times or kids working on projects, I'd struggle to stay awake, and especially in boring teacher inservice sessions. Now? No problems at all for hours!! I used to get up 2-3 times a night. But now I sleep a solid 6-8 hours depending on outside noise that might wake me up. CPAP has been a life changer for me.

I had a problem with the Dry Nose and also nose bleeds last year ( as I am on warfarin for a mechanical heart valve). A trick I use along with the great ideas stated was to use white ( medical grade ) petroleum jelly and lightly put it in my nostrils to cover the skin within. Worked very well for me!

I have just come across thus site. Keep up the good work
I was originally diagnosed with Sleep Aponea many years ago. After initially trying the Nasal prongs I purchased a mouth and nose plate. I also ended up with a humidifier unit hoping that would solve the dryness issues that I was experiencing.
I could never get accustomed to the noise of the various machines either.
I have restricted air passages which would become wind burnt. Added to the above I would develop reactive Sinusitis.
The sinuses also become i flamed when rain is imminent.
End result us I have long given up trying to use the machine.
I have chronic health issues and some respite would be appreciated.
I get very little sleep. Most days it is a struggle to stay awake. If I do get some sleep it is only in short cat naps due to pressure building up in the sinuses or running out of air.
    Take care,
    John

I talked to the specialist who handles my sleep therapy. He said that the goal of surgery is to cut your numbers in half. In terms of AHI, less than 5 is normal. 5 to 15 is mild. 15 to 30 is moderate. And 30 or greater is severe. So, this is what you need to look at when considering surgery. In my case, I'm at 131 without the machine and less than 5 with it. Now if we do a little math, we can see why he didn't think surgery was the best option for me. But I would imagine that if you had an AHI of more like 30, it would be a more attractive option. So, that's the sort of thing you should weigh.

I have tried a dozen different masks over time and settled on a comfort pillow style which is minimally invasive to my face. I cannot imagine sleeping without a CPAP now. It does work and you'll get used to it if *you* choose the best gear for you. Most companies will allow you to try on different masks. Just ask and best to you!

It was leaking and uncomfortable and I was skipping using the CPAP macxhine for days at a time. Then I went to a Fisher Paykel full face mask! WOW! At least the CPAP is only supposed to be used a maximum of 5 hours per night. Both CPAP and ventilators at hospitals will only let you exhale for about 1.5 seconds, then no matter how hard YOU blow to fully exhale your carbon dioxide, both machines will blow harder and harder, hard enough to prevent you from exhaling longer than 1.5 seconds. On my last sleep clinic to try out using a CPAP machine, I kept waking up every 5 minutes having a nightmare that I couldn't breath, all night. Finally at around 5am I did my breathing exercise, with equal inhales to exhales. I did 4 counts each, and no matter how hard I tried to fully exhale all my carbon dioxide, the machine blew harder and harder, and prevented me from exhaling. I had them turn the machine down to a minimum, I could overcome (while awake). I read a report about research that showed ventilators do the same thing only allowed a 1.5 second exhale. Big inhale, tiny exhale, and they put people on ventilators for 24 hrs a day. 80% of people put on respirators in hospitals die, but they receive $20,000 to $40,000 every time they put someone on a respirator, so are compelled to do so by the hospital. I googled: what would happen on the USS if the scrubbers malfunctioned and stopped removing the carbon dioxide from the air. NASA has it worked out down to the second, how fast all the astronauts would die re-breathing their carbon dioxide, and it's not very long my pretty, not very long at all. The machines are gimmicks to make money, plus the providers of the machines can and do control the machines remotely while you sleep. Search for class action suites about these machines.

You can monitor your progress each night on the machine or online at a website which will privately display your nightly and monthly results.
