why not just drip the water into a deep freezer at 1 kg packets? Put them through an aqua tuner system that cools them off to almost 1 or 2 degrees, then put it through an mini pump that drips into a deep freezer. sort of like a reverse-sauna!

Easier might just be to make an ethanol basin at something like -20 and run pipes through that. Then send water through those pipes. That gives you a lot more temperature range to work with.

Love that ice factories are a thing now. My favorite way is to use gulp fish in a cool slush geyser. Since the polluted water is -10, it immediately freezes when the gulp fish purity it. Very cool use for a mediocre critter morph.

I would be a bit careful with the clean water forming solid ice tiles. I had multiple fish inside ice blocks last time I tried it. If you keep the water at -5 to +5 it is fine. The fish produce very messy layers in a water + p water pool with water columns at the walls. Was a huge headache last time I messed with that.

Thanks for keeping this a one-planetoid run! Space is cool and all, but I love to see the creative solutions you come up with to make the most of what’s available there. Once you remove the starting planetoid’s constraints, colonies start to optimize very similarly to each other instead of adapting to their unique environment and resources. Great series, Echo!

A helpful tip on the Ice Makers, they have a max internal capacity of 300 kg of ice/snow. It doesn't drop onto the ground and when full they will stop producing. Automation could be reduced to just smart bins closing the chute. A change for later though, don't want that ice idling on the rails while it's still too warm or it'll melt.

I think you need to rearrange the cooling loop - you’ll need the cold nectar to keep the ice makers below freezing, and THEN you can send it to the water bath to keep that ABOVE freezing.
Right now, you’re using all your cooling on the water bath, and sending hot nectar up to the ice makers, which are supposed to be colder than the water bath.

I think the wonky sun mechanics might be because sunlight is emitted specifically on a tile basis in unbroken vertical lines of Void tiles (aka Vacuum + "Space exposure"). Because mesh and airflow tiles "contain" a tile of Void, it ignores the tile altogether, despite light not actually passing through it.
There may be some additional categories of tiles that are hard-coded to allow the Void strips to be unbroken (drywall, window, etc.), because that's simpler to do: if the next tile below this one contains the "Space exposure" attribute, *or* the tile below is a drywall or window tile, continue moving downwards with the calculation of sunlight tiles. Presumably, adding in a check if the "Space exposure" tile is actually within a tile that can't pass light, such as an airflow or mesh tile, might be a lot more difficult from a programming standpoint.

Thermo aqua tuner + steam turbine combo and on the right or left you put 2 layers of metal tiles with aqua tuner pipes through it. Add miner on the top (just in case). Liquid valve, liquid vent to deliver water and shipping to take out ice.
Not sure if such setup would be more power efficient, but for sure less labor intensive and would took much less space.
If you need more ice thus more cold then add steam turbine and add another aqua tuner.

I tried a similar ice maker solution and its still what I'm doing for snow making. I've switched over to a solution which uses less power and labour.
A water tank is fed by polluted water sources. A pump feeds the water through a tepidizer warming tank to raise the temperature to 5 degrees checked before its allowed out. Then it goes into a pair of water sieves. A 9 wide 6 high room acts as my freezer chamber. Its cooled by a cooling loop from a dedicated aquatuna tuner / steam turbine running nectar at -20C. Nine liquid valves off the feed pipe each allow 500g/s to drop into the room from vents. Two Auto Sweepers collect the ice into a conveyor loader which feeds conveyor receptacles in the Alveo Vera chamber - it takes two sweepers to keep up with the loading just one couldn't keep up. A conveyor element sensor checks for ice being backed up to the chamber on the line with a filter gate on it to stop it just switching on and off all the time. That controls the a liquid shut off valve on the feed from the water sieves to prevent water sitting in the pipes and freezing in the room.
Been running for about 500 cycles without touching it now.

It's great to be able to watch you make that metal volcanoe tamer. I'm currently playing through Spaced Out and am set to land on another planetoid with metal volcanoes, but I've never tamed them before. Awesome work
Also, in terms of ice making, couldn't you just pour water into a room that's kept under 0 degrees by a thermo aquatuner loop? Since you're shipping the ice automatically, you wouldn't even need to make an entrance for your dupes.
You'd have to keep your current desalination setup, of course. Unless you can get away with Brine Ice.

For an ice factory, why not segment the water into 1-kilo packets (so it won't freeze in the pipes), chill it below -3 C, and then drop it into opened mechanical airlocks, similar to how regolith tiles are forced into debris state? You used the door trick to make natural tiles, so despite your resistance to infinite storage solution, it's clear you're not opposed to using some of the...eccentricities of the game engine.

Hot things will stay hot and cold things stay cold unless there's some interaction between them that does allow transfer. I don't know why but templeshift works good when will put a metal tile or diamond window between them, if there is nothing just gases or liquids it's too slow between templeshift, 3 or more.

  • @xXMGVXx
    @xXMGVXx Місяць тому

Mash tiles stop liquids from forming tiles and output their content on the floor as something conveyors can pick up.
Creating water from saltwater to make ice is especially not efficient.
Cooling saltwater into brine results in ice that does not form tiles under any circumstances. Conveniently enough it also forms two layers with the saltwater resting on the brine. If you close the saltwater input at 500kg per tile and start pumping away the lower layer at the same density the system will be stable at 10° C no matter how much cooling you put into it and output ice very quickly. I have not found an efficient way to deal with brine aside from boiling but desalinating actual saltwater is really a waste if the goal is ice. The whole brine chiller takes 20 tiles at most without the cooling system.

OOOH, ice factory! It makes sense, you need ice to feed your plants (not to mention making wallpaper and floor tiles out of it is possible, now). It’s gonna be a heat-heavy system, but it shouldn’t need to run often enough to truly tax the cooling loop. And the automation in the oxygen farm should help a lot with dupe labour. It’s always a treat to get to see something new evolve like this; can’t wait to see how it shakes out in practice, what the up times are like and if it’ll need more tuning.

There are some niobium tamers that have some potential to make ice (with obvious changes), without the sweepers using the auto bottler. Just use a liquid vent in combination with a liquid valve to limit the flow so it instantly turns to ice when it hits a super chilled plate and sweep it away. With a system like this you could keep it separate from your cooling loop and eliminate a ton of dupe labor, pipes and cables. As a side note I realize your not going to space but you may want to include it for viewers that do go to space, when playing late game to swap out all your iron ore wires to refined metals, preferably steel when later on its easy to come by, as you can get twice as much steel from that one piece of iron ore.
